One needs a glass of wine after reading that story - it's such a precarious journey for these little ones!

I think the girls traditionally have more problems due to their weight Eagle.  They tend to be anywhere from 2 to 3 times larger than the males and top heavy so it's more difficult for them to keep altitude in the beginning.  Last year both girls came down several times during fledge week and the male flew like a champ from day one.   This year it's the opposite, both girls are flying like champs while the little guy is struggling to keep up  :(  The girls here try to get the little guy to go out with them too, they bump him on the ledge too but I think it's more that they want him to join in on the fun.  Fortunately he's not buying what they're selling  ;D

From what the team here says, the location of the building in Mississauge has been a challenge for the fledglings..like Tracy said 'they chose the nest site not us'.  I was with some of the CPF people when they got the news about Brooke and everyone was upset over it..poor little mite.

So sad about Brooke is Mississauga, especially after returning days after her first flight! The way her brothers coaxed her off the ledge (not that they had any ill will, I'm sure!) reminds me of the saying 'if so-and-so jumped off a bridge, would you, too?' or is it 'just because so-and-so does something, does that mean you have to, too' ---i can't bring the saying to mind properly right now, but I'm reminded of that peer pressure, think for yourself kind of message....seeing that females aren't really ready to fledge until a week after the males, do we see more female deaths in fledging as a result of going to early?

It's gone from a nice day here to severe thunderstorm warning with the possibilty of hail, and the always-added-on possible tornado.  The wind has kicked up and thunder is rolling overhead.

Tracy, I've been perusing through the various webcams, sites pertaining to Peregrines and have read on more than one occasion that the males tend to fledge before the females, it that because the males are smaller and lighter in weight?

Pchemist, I'm quite sure you are normal.  One of my best friends is a chemist, and she is also quite normal.  Which gas phase molecular ions in particular?

Most of my work has been on small molecules of atmospheric or mass spectrometric interest - oxygen, nitric oxide, nitrous oxide, and O4 (which doesn't have its own name...) and their ions - looking at how they react, isotope effects in reactions and dissociations, and such.  Also some work on cluster ions.  In my past, because now I manage research partnerships instead of having my own lab.  Which is fun in a different way.  :D
