2013 NESTING SEASON

Indy Froona was back this winter and left again when Hoffman and his mate returned (she really really needs a name!).  Four eggs laid in April, all four hatched in May, were banded in June and fledged in July.  There were three males (Linnaeus, Asa & Carver) and one female (Frances).

Photos are by Greg Septon

2012 NESTING SEASON

Indy Froona spent the winter visiting the nestbox and when Hoffman and his unbanded mate returned she headed off without the being forceably evicted by the resident pair.  The four female chicks were named Allesandra, Penny, Ellen & Maria.  They hatched in May, were banded in June and fledged in July.

The following photo are by Greg Septon.

2011 NESTING SEASON

The start of the year had Hoffman hanging out with Indy Froona then Hoffman's unbanded mate returned and Indy Froona had to leave.  Four eggs hatched mid-May, the four female chicks were banded in June and all four fledged from the EMS nestbox early in July.  The chicks names are Barbara, Dian, Nettie & Muriel.

The following are a selection of photos from U Wisconsin-Milwaukee's website.  Photos are by Greg Septon.

The four chicks were taking it easy today, but it looks as if a chick is just sneaking back into the nest box on the far left in the first pics:

I didn't see the chick at the back, with his beak open, being fed:

Alison, the article you posted was interesting as it described the cooperation between the University and the Peregrine Recovery Project in building the nest box.
They sure didn't hold back in acquiring a camera with great resolution.
The images are stunning!

Thanks, Kinderchick!

A very short article on the Milwaukee EMS falcons:

Baby falcons hatch; caught on webcam

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- New baby falcons have hatched in Milwaukee.

A spokesperson for UW-Milwaukee says Peregrine Falcons have been present on the UWM campus for several years frequently seen soaring above or perched on several of the high rise buildings on campus.

In particular, much activity has been observed on the Engineering & Mathematical Sciences Building. In the fall of 2007, Greg Septon of the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Program, toured the EMS site and encouraged University officials and scientists to build and install a nest box at the site.

Plans were drawn up for the box, UWM Physical Plant carpenters and other trades workers constructed and installed the nest box at a site chosen on the roof of the EMS building. Department Biological Sciences faculty and staff provide scientific observation and data reporting.

And someone is thinking of the red-tailed hawk for our national bird? When we have peregrines like this? (Yeah, I know this one isn't in Canada, but we still have gorgeous ones here).

Sampson isn't in the picture anymore he had an accident and is in rehab I believe Greg said this is the information I got from him when I emailed him

Re. the image you sent, I believe this male is actually 54/M. See attached image taken on March 5. If this is indeed 54/M, his name is "Hoffmann" & I banded him as a nestling at the Edgewater Generating Station in Sheboygan in 2003. He paired with an unbanded adult female at the MMSD site in Milwaukee in 2008 producing 2 young. On April 16 last year I identified Hoffmann again at MMSD but no nesting took place. It's only a short flight from the MMSD site to the EMS site!

No recent news re. Samson

2010 NESTING SEASON

Three are four beautiful eggs being incubated in this nest. Where I am at the moment, I can't save pics, which is really frustrating.  :-X

When I checked the cam today I noticed that the chicks had been banded (bands visible in the third pic). There are a few banding pics on the photo page. The chicks were banded yesterday.

Adult female looks unbanded, male has at least a black band, can't tell if it is maybe black and green.

The male's band is black/green, E/43. He is Samson, born in 2007 at the Firstar Center, Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. His parents are not identified, but both have black/green bands.

I found this pic on the site:

2009 NESTING SEASON

Adult female looks unbanded, male has at least a black band, can't tell if it is maybe black and green.  First egg laid April 8th. Four eggs by the 14th.  On the 16th, three eggs hatched, last chick hatched by the 18th.  All fat and happy so far.

Great chick pile photo posted for May 18th on www.uwm.edu/Dept/Biology/Docs/falcon/
