Okay while I'm not sure this works, because when I looked at her in daylight I couldn't see it, but at night she has a wonderful white stripe along both wing tips.  I keep saying this, but -- I don't remember that from last year, but she certainly behaves like mum form last year.  I know, we have to see the band to know, but I still think...  Love the white!

Not to be the "bad guy" but plumage changes a bit each year, so unless you can see her band - find the most distinctive feature last year and her least distinctive feature and use those for comparison.  The more you can get the better too.

Ivy in 2007 (heck not in 2008 either) didn't look like Trey as much as he does now ...

quite a lot of nestkeeping going on (pebble movement).  This is mom from last year, I believe, as the crown is there (much like Princess has).  I'm nearly certain it's the same pair.  And all looks nice and peaceful!  Can't beat that.  ;D

Depends on the stage of incubation and the external temperature.  I have watched one of our females off the eggs for close to 45 minutes when the sun was shining on the box and it was hot!  I wouldn't worry too too much at this point ...

How long can a parent be off of the eggs?  The eggs have been unattended for quite awhile now. Well over 15 minutes.  The parent was very restless and making chirping noises and then sat on the edge of the nest box for quite awhile until he/she flew off.

TPC, it's great that you can see traits passed on.  Physical are more obvious (e.g. P's crown); so glad you pass on the characteristics stuff.   :)

I wonder what that's all about?  Trey and Princess are like that as well.  He, Trey, wants to do his part and is eager to do his part, but Princess would always kinda sorta in a falcon way to go away.  TPC...any ideas or comments on this?

Sorry...didn't mean to bring in Princess and Trey in the Elk River Thread..sorry.  Just seemed familiar!

You are still on topic no worries.  Depends on the individuals involved.  T-Rex used to bully his females off the nest quite regularly so he could incubate.  With his first female, that was fine with her, with Madame, she let him get away with it about 1/2 the time.  Trey is not so aggressive as his Dad (who was hyper-aggressive) but rather more like his grand-dad, Pop, and he was a good Dad to all his young.  Some females are more aggressive, some are less.  Sometimes that why one rarely sees the male around the nest (unlike our rockstar). Some are more aggressive in defense of the nest, less aggressive, or let's say dominant when it comes to nest-site activities.  Part of what makes them neat to watch ....

Just like the typical male, not wanting to get up and go hunting. Must we females always be the one? lol

Lol...that happens here too sometimes dad won't get up and mom yells at him and he just won't move!  I think that's his way of saying, why should I do all the hunting - you get out there for awhile, I want to rest  ;D
