For anyone getting this on cable (in Wpg), there are tornado watches in MN.  I checked -- it's 144 miles due south of Elk River.

Thanks Alison.  I hope the family will be okay and I hope Bob doesn't have too hard a time getting to the nestbox and doing what he has to do.

thanks for those pics Alison. I checked in late last night (11:00 pm Toronto time) and all were sleeping and wiggling but looked normal. Mom was close to the cam on the edge ... really wishing they'd bring the damn cam up!

I wonder how far it was for the biologist to come out to the plant and go up to the box.  Also and maybe Alison would know or TPC, would they want to test Bella to make sure it's not a virus in case the other chicks are infected too?  Or would they jsut remove the one and then test and come back if necessary?

I wouldn't want to speculate at this point on what might have happened - I don't have enough information. Whatever it was seemed to be very sudden. Something like Trichomoniasis, for instance, would not usually progress so fast. TPC may well have insight on this.

Bob Anderson of Raptor Resource is aware of the situation and is going to GRE today.

When I checked the site yesterday a few times, all four chicks were moving around and looked okay.

These pics are from fairly late in the day yesterday:

The best way is to trap the chicks in the back of the box, not always difficult since they do it kind of naturally - think of our chicks the day they managed to get out of the nest-tray, they spent the whole next day or two velcroed to the Hotel wall for security.  It might take some work, but they should be able to figure out a way.

And it will stress the chicks, but that won't be detrimental to/for them ...

This is very sad to read something may have happened to one of the chicks,  :( I was watching at 5:30 am and all seemed fine. Lets just keep our fingers crossed everything is ok.

TPC...if they need to remove a chick because something has happened to it, how do they go about it without "stressing" or causing the other chicks to leave the nest box too early?

On the BCAW board everyone noticed yesterday that Bella was not eating at all and she was very lethargic.  This morning she was laying against the wall with what looked like eyes open but not breathing or moving even when the others stepped on her.  Two meals came in and she laid in the same position not moving at all.

wow, quite a shock to read all this, and not nice that the cam is down...  I hope you're all worrying for nothing and she was just asleep.  I'm going to go with that until I know otherwise.

Chicks at this stage do voluntarily miss meals,  I didn't see her this morning so I can't say what I think is/was happening, but our chicks have all decided that napping was more appealing than another meal.  Our chicks get their first meal around 3:30 am, so that by the time most of us are logging in in the morning, they have had at least one if not more breakfasts ... is it possible she just slept through it?  Birds die fast but this one is a little faster than I would have expected from a bird that seemed healthy (to someone a thousand miles away via webcam) such a short time ago.  And the banders at this site are very experienced, they would have noticed obvious problems with the chick - hard not to when you have them in your hands ....

Hopefully we will hear more soon ...

At 20:17 yesterday all four looked okay.  So sad to lose a chick.
I love watching them but hate it when something happens to any of them.
I guess that is nature and we can't do anything to change it.
