Congratulations to Dennis for winning the Monthly photo contest at Canadian Wildlife - his fantastic capture of a Great Gray received the most votes!  We in this forum are not surprised!

For those who don't know who Lady Gray'l is, she was a Great Grey Owl that was rescued as a chick by Dr Robert Nero a foremost authority on Great Grey Owls in Canada.  Bob has spent decades monitoring GGOW populations and along with Lady Gray'l educating the public (in particular school children) about owls and the environment.  Lady Gray'l died a few years ago, but her work continues.

Nature North (2013) Great Grey Owls & Lady Gray'l

Winnipeg Sun (2006) Owl man Nero is one of a kind

Bob Nero is also the founder of the Project.  In 2010 in honour of Bob and the 30th anniversary of the Project the lone male chick from Jules' and Beau's first nest together was named "Nero".

Dennis you are so very lucky to have participated in banding the owls and being able to release one of them.  8)  I am envious and wish I could have been there to watch all the action.  :)

Something few get to do...
While out owling I came across Dr. Jim Duncan from Manitoba Conservation and his wife Patsy who band Hawk Owls and Great Grays here in Manitoba.
This was now the 2nd. chance to see them in action. The first time being in 2009 and now again in 2013 http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/owl_banding_2013
This gallery is under construction and will be completed in the next couple day...so check back again.
It's a delight to watch them at work...giving me to opportunity to view and photograph these Winter Owls up-close and personal.
Their banding and research track owls from year to year and gives them an idea as to their movement and numbers.
The series of photos includes their capture, banding, documentation of weight, age and sex of each owl captured.
This years eruption of Great Grays in Manitoba has kept them busy.
