Aw... so sorry to hear of the death of Maya. :'( You have given us all so many wonderful memories of her through your beautiful photos of her, RCF. Thank you. :-*

Will there be tests done on Maya to determine if disease was related to her condition?

We had a couple of storms here with hail and strong winds the week Maya was not around.  The first one on the 11th and then on the 15th. I am inclined to think she may have been blown around and got too far from home and then disoriented and lost her way.  :-\  :(

Definite possibility - especially given the kinds of wind storms y'all have out there - and the timing is very good.  If it was a storm, the storm on the 11th would mesh with her condition on the 16th, the 15th would be too short a period of time.  And she wasn't that far, so she may well have been working her way back but just ran out of steam before getting there.  Sure gives one a better sense of all the hazards out there - we usually just focus on the immediate ones near our urban nestsites.  With more less-than-dense-urban sites (Selkirk & Brandon Tower) we are seeing different types of hazards.  And the chicks haven't even begun their southern migrations yet!

Interestingly, so far (and knock on wood it won't happen), no "urban" mortalities - not collisions with buildings or automobiles or poisonings.  The three deaths we have had were more the type of mortalities that the peregrines face when they are out of our sight, and mostly out of our reach in terms of being able to help them.

:'( :'( Sadly we must say goodbye to Maya (Red girl). Those of us who have followed from egg to fledge feel the pain, however, not as much as Rose and RCF. Thank you so much for all the updates, photos and videos. Two videos that were my favorites were (are) all chicks being spooked by the food wrapper and Maya splashing in the puddle in preparation for the peregrine Olympics. By the way, this judge awarded her the gold medal. This was a delight. She was a beautiful bird.  :'(

I was shocked to see the forum headline, what sad news. Sounds like maybe she got too far away from home too soon and couldn't sustain herself......poor girl, but so glad she was at least found and given a chance in the end.... :'(
