A few more Brandon Banding photos have been added.

I love all your photos except for the one.  ::)  I think you should blank out the plate number because I don't want the cops chasing me down for parking on a one way street. :P  ;D

** IDEA ** (for TPC  ;))...

If or when you put transmitters on these guys, would it be possible to put a strip of the coloured tape that matches their legs on the top or side of the backpack?  I think it  would really help in identifying them with the wide angle views we are likely to have from herein.  Just an idea...

Hey Leana I don't think TPC has much to do with putting the transmitters on any of these chicks it's a Conservation/University of Manitoba Research Project. Tracy's role is to make sure that it's done in a safe way and no harm comes to the chicks. If you cover the back of the transmitters you would cover the solar batteries. They will be flying very soon after and then you will only be able to see the antenna once they fledge.Once they have left the McK Bld there will only be photos from the ground,or if we are lucky they may occasionally come back to the lower roof area but this hasn't been the case in Hurricane's last three nests.

How can you tell that is Hunter RCF?  I can't see coloured leg bands at that distance!

I took video of them and took a capture from that, so when he moved off I could see the band with tape was dark. Process of elimination, Maya is bigger than the two boys and Sol's tape is white, so that's how I can tell. :)

Hunter looks like he is the king of the castle standing on that grate cover.  :)

Can't remember which fledgling (male, though) was fond of standing on the grate when Princess & Trey used the nestledge.......I will have to look for a picture!  Gotta be a male thing....... ;D

Just got confirmation ...

Chick Names

The Brandon chicks hatched on June 5th which is the date of the Transit of Venus (http://www.transitofvenus.org/, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Venus).  Because Venus has a retrograde orbit it is viewed twice in six years then not again for 100+ years - the next transit will be in 2117 - hopefully by that date, the peregrines won't need our assistance anymore!

Female (red) - Maya - the Maya were amazing astronomers and Venus was very important to them and they understood the planet's full cycle - the Venus cycle was especially important because the Maya believed it was associated with war and used it to divine appropriate times for coronations and war - Maya rulers planned for wars to begin when Venus rose.

Male (green) - Hunter - Maureen Hunter (http://www.canadiantheatre.com/dict.pl?term=Hunter%2C%20Maureen) - one of the transit expeditions was lead by Guillaume Le Gentil - he spent 8 years travelling in an attempt to observe either of the 1761/1769 transits but failing - his unsuccessful journey led to him losing his wife and possessions being declared dead.  Winnipeg playwright Maureen Hunter based her play "Transit of Venus" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_of_Venus_(play)) on his life.  Play premiered at MTC in 1992 (1992 was also the last year we released captive-bred chicks in Brandon - 1993 was the first successful nest)

Male (white) - Sol - the Latin name for the star, Sol, is widely known but is not common in general English language use - the Transit of Venus is an astronomical event, the voyage of a planet (Venus) across the face of the a star (Sol)
Awesome Choice, Tracey.

I really like the names also!  :)  Rose and I were told at the banding that they might use these names, I'm glad they did.  ;D 8)

The wind is blowing on the roof and the three peregrine chicks are seemingly chased by what looks like a food wrapper of some kind.

Great video - thanks, RCF!
