Well the box is larger, the roof is larger and the broom handle is longer...I would say all is GOOD  ;D
Just a Question Dennis. Is there a reason that you put the perch bar along the bottom edge of the nest box instead of along the top edge like the old one? :)

Dennis will probably forgive me for answering you Rose, I asked him to move the perch to underthe box so that the birds/chicks had a variety of heights to sit on - the perch being the lowest (by about 6inches), the box edge and the roof.  I thought the variety of heights would give the chicks more of a work out prior to fledging.  After last year watching Rain and Rossser work therei way around and up and down on the roof before fledging, I think the extra vertical and horizontal space was good for them and though I can't give them horizontal space at the nestbox, I can give them a few vertical opportunities.

I'm wondering if the new roof will more appealing since its more sturdy than the old one ... and bigger, but the size I don't think is that much of an issue.  One of the birds, Hurricane I think, was on the roof first thing this morning and was there for awhile.

THe chicks will love it,room for more than three at a time.In 2009 three would get up there and the fourth one was just out of luck but it was a pretty tight fit to wingersize but real good for sunning. :)

RCF & Rose - how often did you see the birds sit on the roof in past years?

If you mean the nest box, not often. We have seen them on the nest box roof, but usually only when they are in the canoodle stage and they will also land there when they have chicks.

Which roof?   ???     If you mean the McKenzie roof, because you probably can't see the clock tower roof with cam, they eat prey up there and Hurricane likes to sit at the bottom of the clock tower, especially when they have chicks. We never see them perched on the lower roof ledges or parapets, they could but I have never seen them perched there. When Zeus was here, he liked to perch on the black ledge on the east side where the cam can't see.

Lots of in and out of the nestbox between 0600 and 0730 this morning, mostly by him though she was parked on the roof first thing.  Head bowing session in the box just after 0600 bit gloomy because its overcast and a bit early but I'll down load the video anyway and post it later today.

Will post links to new videos when they are available.

Wonderful photos of Hurricane and the new nestbox as well as the great new pole perch! 8)

Oh the perch is great - very solid wood and longer than the last one - and it has, I guess its a "knob" at the end - you know the kind of thing that's on rakes so it doesn't slide through your hands.  I have visions of it stopping chicks from pushing each other off the end since I think that pole can accomodate a family of four on it.  I hadn't found anything nearly that good but Dennis did!
I can tell you about 2009 (4)and 2010(2) that the chicks before they fledged had a wonderful time on the bar, they would wingersize like mad and make the bar bounce up and down till I thought it would break and when they got more daring they would  hop, fly, jump from the bar to the top of the nest box it was amazing ;D. Last year we didn't see that because they were on the floor.
