It's only day 12/11 but this little band of bandits seems to be catching on to everything faster than their siblings in previous years.  I'm going to be interested in seeing what gender they are when we band them in a bit.

I'm going to take a flyer here and say that I think this little band is not going wait until they are "old enough" to do things ... which is I suspect going to cause us more than a few heart-stopping moments!

They are not even in their tweens and are already spreading their wings and their attitude ;)

5:45 ish Breakfast time.

I think the chicks doubled in size since yesterday! Okay, that's an exaggeration - but they sure are growing.

They are not shy about just reaching out and grabbing food.

One of the chicks took something that was too big to swallow . . .  eventually it came back up and parent picked it apart then served up smaller portions.

Back to the wall for a cuddle

Edited to add:
5:52 -another round of incoming food.  :o

I guess it could be a loose louvre, sounds more like a hammer or somebody stomping their foot....but it's been going on most of the day and still is...don't know why you can't hear it TPC?  ???

Sorry, I should have said I could hear the banging, just that I wasn't sure what the cause was - sounds too close and clear to the microphone to be something on the outside of the building.  And as far as I know there isn't any work going on on the roof of the Hotel and no one in the nestbox seems spooked by the sound, not like when they were incubating and they could hear people on the roof working.  And I know it wasn't the hotel construction after 1900h because I checked out the site with the skycam and all the machines were sleeping and no one was on-site.  If tomorrow has less wind and the sound is still there, I'll do some investigating ...

Lots of intermittent 'banging' going on, are they working on the building or is that the construction across the street?... :-\
I have been hearing that strange banging too, ballywing and wondered what it was. TPC is probably right - a loose louvre. But I can also hear what sounds like vehicles going by down below. Must be the direction the wind is blowing. That mic sure is powerful.

Not sure about the banging you are talking about ballywing, but the high pitched whine is the wind blowing through the louvres on the roof.  As for the banging, nope not the hotel construction at Portage & Donald - they have finished for the night and they aren't doing any of that kind of work - they are digging out at the moment, pile-driving will come soon enough, just not yet.

I'm wondering if there is a louvre that is a little loose and banging when the wind is in just the right direction - if it were close enough to the where the microphone has been installed, that could account for the clear sound.  If it were near, it wouldn't need to be very loud in real life, remember that you can hear the birds on the pebbles when they come into the box at times!

Its raining enough that the sky-cam dome is blurry.  Didn't stop our boy Ivy from turning up with a meal for the kids.  Two are very interested in food, third somewhat, fourth not much, but not really surprising looking at his/her crop.  But they are all chowing down nonetheless.

Did a little backtracking and the first meal of the day was just after 3am.  From 0530 to 1100 there were an additional 8 meals - small and quick but meals.

I thought it seemed like they were have something to eat more frequently ... .

The chicks are huddled against the back wall with Ivy (I think - based on height and the chicks over flowing). A squirmy chick worked his/her way from the middle of the pile for a stretch and realized that on a cool evening, the best place to be is in the chick pile.

TPC, have you set a date yet for banding this bunch?

Nope not yet, the players are checking their calendars as we speak  :)
As soon as we have a confirmed date, I will post it here.  Hopefully in the next couple of days.

Ivy just came by to see if the chicks needed anything ... the are comatose in a pile at the back of the box and didn't even twitch when Dad hopped in and came right up to check them out.  Not needed, he hopped out and headed out again.

1720h

Meal # (can't count that high) occurring right now.  Two of the four chicks have burped and waddled away from their meal.

Nuts, big chick is trying to eat a leg/foot ... ah, now yakking it up ... now trying again  ... finally yakked it up for good ... now sibling is trying with no greater success ...  ::)

Going to have to keep a close eye on this gang ...
