What an unusual sight a little while ago... Ivy perched on the edge cuddling with a snoozing upright chick... For a while he was balancing on one foot.
When you see a scene like this it's hard not to "amphomot..." (whatever) them. It's just precious!
This actually started with the chick nibbling on its parent's toes, something these little terrors do to one another and to their parents at this age and stage. The chicks have not been able to get comfortable in the heat and they have taken to trying to sleep sitting up, frequently with their heads propped against the back wall of the nestbox or on the edge of the box - this one has found the most comfortable pillow that is for sure!!
What is most interesting is that this is Princess - sorry Leana
- the lighter crown of feathers gave her away, the speckles on her breast too. She doesn't usually tolerate nibbling and she does not like to sit in the heat. That hopefully means the temperature is starting to drop some. She also doesn't usually hang around much after bringing in meals to the chicks, but again interestingly, she was doing some beak-to-beak feeding tonight which isn't wildly unusual for her with chicks this age, but again, she doesn't like to hang out in the nestbox when its hot if there isn't a breeze. It may just be that it has been so hot that she has not been visiting as much as she would have if it were cooler. Once she was in the box with dinner, the hardwiring to hang out with her chicks may just have been enough to keep her there longer, and tolerate more nibbling and playing pillow since she's been keeping cool elsewhere so much over the last couple of days. As I said, kinda interesting ....
Love the screen capture Leana, nicely done!
