I'm guessing that Esmerelda was the smallest of the four chicks, maybe not quite caught up yet.

Once again Ivy got some snuggle time.
He gave a few squawks of protest as Princess arrived, but as she stomped over to him he quickly got up and left.

And we got a rather graphic view of the whole bird, the vigorous plucking of feathers and a hungry Princess eating.  She shared her lunch with her enthusiastic babies .   :o

...As for the band, couldn't tell you want species it was but it looked bigger than the plover Eye-Spy suggested.  And not enough bands on it - plovers tend to have combinations to indicate where, when and at what age they were banded.  Actually, I can say for sure it wasn't a plover, the feet/legs were too big, but perhaps not too big for one of the small rail species but I don't know if anyone is banding them as part of a study somewhere - or was banding this one...
I was wondering if it was a Piping Plover too, but I guess, as you say, TPC, we'll just have to wait to see if any of the local ornithologists respond to your query.

Just curious - how long do you think it would it take Ivy (or Princess) to fly to OHM, as the peregrine flies of course?
Care to give an estimate - let alone catching, killing prey, then returning?

0936 hrs

Second (or third) breakfast.  Princess is feeding, Ivy is on the box edge.  From what I can see all the tots look to be begging nicely for food but Princess is partially blocking them this mealtime.

Here's the forecast for today & tomorrow:
Today - Cloudy with sunny periods. High 15. UV index 5 or moderate.
Tonight - Cloudy. Low 8.
Monday - Rain. Risk of a thunderstorm late in the afternoon and in the evening. Amount 10 to 20 mm. Wind becoming northeast 20 km/h then east 40 gusting to 60 early in the afternoon. High 15.

They don't eat the feet, no point since they'd just have to cough them up - and not like chicken wings, no meat on them.  ;)

And yes, they do discard them, though they do tend to have favourite places (certain rooftops) that way they can be certain that the "bits" won't attract a predator to nest.  They even drop them over the rivers to make sure the debris is carried away - songbirds do the same thing with swimming pools and the poop packets their chicks produce.

As for the band, couldn't tell you want species it was but it looked bigger than the plover Eye-Spy suggested.  And not enough bands on it - plovers tend to have combinations to indicate where, when and at what age they were banded.  Actually, I can say for sure it wasn't a plover, the feet/legs were too big, but perhaps not too big for one of the small rail species but I don't know if anyone is banding them as part of a study somewhere - or was banding this one.  Only saw it for two frames on the video playback but I'm going to send it along to some of the ornithologists around town since they have asked.  So we'll see I guess.

As for where they get them, they are all over the place along the rivers and small wetlands in town, but we know that the Radisson birds visit OHM, so maybe that is where take-out comes from this week.

Wonder where that band ended up?  Where do the birds "discard" their "snacks"?
I am certainly no authority here and I'm sure that tpc will explain this better than I.
There are birdie parts all over the downtown area, I've seen many. Heads, carcasses, legs, feet and wings on sidewalks and streets. The peregrines do not seem to care where the "leftovers" go.

Sometimes they just eat the whole thing, then they cough up pellets. So that's where you might want to look.

I feel sorry for poor Ivy.  ??? He tries so hard to cover the little ones and they complain bitterly since they are so crowded under him.  ::) He keeps having to get up to look at them when they are complaining, as if to say he is trying his best ???.  Then Mom comes back, chases him away and covers up the chicks. :)

I think he takes out his frustrations on his prey ... little hunter has been bringing in shorebirds as well as pigeons lately ... one of the shorebirds even had a band on its leg!!  :o
