This year its famous folks who in one way or another lead us to this point - key people in the environmental movement, folks who were key in the banning of DDT, folks who were instrumental in initiating recovery programs. One built on the next on the next all of which have led us to this point where we have webcams on urban nesting wild peregrine falcons and we are about to vote on names for them. Forty years ago, there weren't enough birds to name - one nest south of the Arctic Circle in all of North America.
Last year we had more fanciful names, the year before unusual names, the year before we wish we had been able to name chicks, the year before that "wind" names and so on and so on and so on. If we mix them up, we can hopefully have names that aren't being used in lots of other locations ... and we should be so lucky that our birds live long enough to have folks watch them on a webcam. Hard to be serious about "Spot" or "Fluffy", cute those the names are at the time of banding!!
