Okay, first, names for birds ... we don't always name the birds, actually, in our Project, most of our birds are not named.  Ones that return or have distinct personalities or if we are in the mood (or have a webcam on them) get named.  ...<snip>
Wow, this is so fascinating!  I LOVE family tree stuff!  (Got my mum's maternal side back to the 1700s.)  I'm so glad the names all have cool reasons, and seem to prove themselves correct.  (Still reading...)

At about 4:45 pm...there was a peregrine perched on the edge of the west side nestbox...just hangin' out!!!
Could this be the spot?  Come on you two (if it's the two we want them to be), follow your pattern and nest on the West  :D

Its 1359 hrs here and a bird is sitting and twitching (probably preening and looking around alot - the image is grainy at this distance) on the JR sign - J foot and looks large enough to be Herself.  She's been there awhile.  First time I've seen her on this side, I think, this year.  She's being very patient.  Trey and Princess were starting to copulate by this point last year, so that my be why she's there.  Himself right now is now of his obvious or visible hang-outs.

As for sound, Larry is working on it but its a case of our technological needs given the set up at the nestbox.  We need it small with self-contained power and it has to be able to "talk" with the rest of our infrastructure.  It is one of the reasons we weren't able to do a blitz of work on the roof this weekend.  Hopefully we will have it all sorted in the next seven days.  Will keep you all in the loop (of course).

Well I sure hope there is NO interest in that nest ledge, other than for short siestas!!! :o - VERY interesting to know how the chicks have been named, TPC - and a family tree will be really handy to get a better picture of the past! (B4 Phanatics Forum)  ;D....Can't wait til the webcam is up & running and I think TPC said we may  have 'SOUND' this year?? - Awesome!!  8)- In the meantime there was a falcon in the Elk River nest a few min ago!! I heard the 'chupping' sounds and came running!

Himself was just on the east side playing around on the nestledge - took snaps and will post shortly.  There is still snow in "the corner" which I don't think impressed him much.  He stayed for less than 5 minutes before taking off after something (I think mayber her).

Speaking of Her, haven't seen her at all on the east side so that may be a very good think indeed.  If I do, I will of course take pictures ....  Her apparent distinct lack of interest in the east side is perhaps a good sign, they have been here for a week and I have yet to see her on the spycam.  Last year, he returned on the 31st and they laid their first egg on April 19th.  If we use this clock, we could (stress the could folks) have eggs laid starting the end of next week.  The weather forecast says cooler weather this week and a 60% chance of flurries tomorrow (Tuesday), 40% chance on Wednesday.  High temps to go to just above freezing over the weekend so the snow might hang around some more and make the nest ledge unappealling in comparison to the more protected nestbox.  And keep in mind that to date, these birds have alternated their nest locations - 2008 ledge, 2007 box, 2006 ledge, 2005 box - hopefully they will keep to this pattern.  Just as a note, while other Radisson pairs have nested on the ledge, none as often as Trey & Princess and none have alternated like Trey and Princess.

(if of course they are Trey & Princess  ;) )

Good morning everyone
I have seen both of the falcon this morning. Him on the green thing under the N and her in The R not on the R in the Round part so if you happen to be looking look in the letters. She was there on Friday and in the a not on the a . Maybe not so windy in the letters. The Sun is finally shining so I will have to wait for a bit to look again.

Terminator (T2) from Brandon is back in Grand Forks but last I heard she hadn't acquired a beau yet.
Terminator sounds like such a masculine name.  And Ivy is a male.  What is the origin/reasoning to these names?  Not complaining; curious!   ;D

Okay, first, names for birds ... we don't always name the birds, actually, in our Project, most of our birds are not named.  Ones that return or have distinct personalities or if we are in the mood (or have a webcam on them) get named.

Sometimes the names are just names - like Lucy (Ivy's sister), she was named by one of our young fans who was with us when we banded her.  She just thought the chick looked like a Lucy.  The 2007 chicks were named for winds because it was a windy (very windy) year, hence Hurricane, Chinook, Mistral & Taku.  Terminator is named as such because a) she was the fighter when we banded the chicks and b) her band number is T2 like the second Terminator movie - and easy mnemonic  ;)

Ivy's name is dynastic - Pop was our first resident male in the province and at the Radisson - the Daddy (and grand, great, etc) of all our Manitoba birds - Pop sounded better than Dad and it sort of went better with Maud.  T-Rex was one of four male chicks in the first nest to Pop (and Maud) at the Radisson.  He came by his name honestly when at least three years later he was attacking my boss (we were banding the his chicks) at the time - the first Jurassic Park was out and my boss' sons had taken him to the movie as his Father's Day present a couple of days before.  T-Rex was the smallest of all our males and the most, lets say, "hands on" of all our birds.  What he aimed for, he hit and he hit everyone who came near his chicks both at the University of Manitoba and at the Radisson.  His band number was also 1/X so it was (again) easy to associate with the name.  Trey is T-Rex's son and the third in the Radisson dynastic line - trois would have been most appropriate (Radisson III) but went with tres/tre/tres (Italian/Latin/Spanish) instead and modified the spelling (had a crush on him even then ;D).  Ivy is, you guessed it - Radisson IV - so Ivy, also, as I recall, his band number was not somthing we could find a mnemonic easily for.

Other names:
Madame - only polite part of what I called her when I was trying to read her band or check her eggs (pre-webcam days).
Radisson - her band band is R7, R and seven more letters and yes, she came from the Radisson - actually, the nestledge in 2006.
Alley - the only place I could ever see her from was anyone of the backlanes around the Hotel - girl had a thing about obscure corners on the backs of buildings.
Heather - daughter of Brandon's Holly and her band number was H7 I believe, so Heather.  She injured herself not long after fledging and went into care and I think they changed her name (not sure why) but she remains Heather in our records.
Sherpa - chick kept climbing out of the nestbox way (WAY) before he should have.  He was an only chick, actually the only chick after the first nest was lost so he kept trying to follow Madame and Trey when they left him.  Way scary little bird.  Flew early too - had to get the police to help me access a construction site on a long weekend to retrieve him.  Put him back up on the Hotel and he was fine.  Came back the next year, then the year after and I thought here's the next male in town, but he crashed into a fence while hunting and died.  Pity, he was a great little bird, reminded me very much of Trey and T-Rex.

There are of course more, but you get the picture.  I've been involved/running the project for a long time, so I've named/been involved in name most the chicks.  In the early years, birds weren't name as a general rule, scientific detachment and all that.  I must admit that I started purely to be able to tell the stories.  And I have no idea where the names come from, but they do all seem appropriate in the end.  Many's the time I'm convinced we don't name them at all ....

I will be adding more family tree information as well, just not sure how best to display the information or how much - but something you all will enjoy seeing ...

I think that's a great idea! Look forward to seeing it.

What beautiful photos of (hopefully) Trey! He is one extremely handsome tiercel. Since I only found this site last year when the falcons were in the later stages of incubation, I hadn't seen too much of Trey, so I've been looking forward to the peregrines returning.

I looked on the blog from April 2007 titled, "who are you" and it's almost an identical pic of Trey.  I put them side by side on my screen and it's really close to the new Rockstar pics of him.  Check it out on that blog...

There is a blog entry on yesterday's (March 28th's) cam adventures at the Radisson and I have posted all the photos I have for the last week in the Photo Gallery.
From the blog:  "I managed to get a look at his breast - broad, white, with a pink wash of colour (he has that at the beginning of the breeding season)".  That's so that she knows he has a good parental instinct -- showing his "I'm secure in pink" side!  "Yes, I houseclean and I change diapers, and I'm proud of it!  I do a heck of a job."  lol

TPC, is this the norm, or is it particular to Trey?  I'd guess it's the norm, so then -- is it something that only mature males show, and not males born 2008, for instance?

And Tracy, that is a Fabulous photo of Trey!
