Thanks Pchemist and Liz, for the info re:why both parents would not be on the nest at one time, to protect the chicks and keep them warm. Yes, that does make perfect sense to me... And I also feel the same as you. I wish that Trey would clean up the nest box. At first I thought that one of the chicks might be dead, until I realized that it was dinner "leftovers"!

yeah, I wish Trey would take out the trash, too.

So I wonder - in a case like tonight where we expect frost - and the chicks not easy to cover up anymore - how come we never ever see BOTH parents do 'Tent' duty together  ???

Both adults together means that both adults could be trapped in one place if attacked.  You will never see the two of them in such a situation.  One bird close by to be the first line of defense, second bird on/at the nest to be the last line of defense.

I don't think so, Kinderchick, because then both would be vulnerable at the same time to any potential attacker.  The chicks are nearing the time when they can thermoregulate themselves, so that's good.

Sure does look windy up there and it is supposed to rain later today. It's getting harder and harder for the chicks to be covered up. Would there ever be a time when both Princess and Trey would attempt to cover them up together, to keep them warm and dry?

Don't you hate it when you get all cozy in bed and then have to get up to go to the bathroom?
lmao, Jo!

Well right now they are getting a snack.

The weather will totally suck this week if they are right, for Winnipeg and here, we're suppose to get the same thing, rain.  So we will see.

Shift Change!!! - Trey lands in the box, paces around a bit looking a little perplexed. 'How the heck am I s'posed to cover all you guys up'  ??? Decides to be a wall rather than an umbrella. Lots of squirming around going on by the chicks trying to snuggle up to Dad!  ;D ( I think it's Trey?)

I just tuned in and caught the end of a morning feeding. The chicks are quite active. Learning how to use their legs?

Two of them seem quite interested in that pigeon wing - they were pecking at the tip of the wing (the part that apears to be just the feather tips).

A couple of times I've noticed the chicks 'kissing' (for lack of better description). Beak to beak - are they grooming each other or sharing food? It happened this morning about 5 minutes after eating.

A parent just came back to keep them warm.

One just came out from under, squirted poo and then crawled back under mom (or dad). Don't you hate it when you get all cozy in bed and then have to get up to go to the bathroom?

I heard about that flippin' rain too, it's going to be a big job for Princess to keep the kids covered!  :-\ - Well we knew when we signed up for this that frequent fretting was part of the deal.  :-X - we have to keep everything crossed that they can all get thru this 'wet' week ok - at least they're a bit older now and don't have to be constantly covered, but REALLY this weather is getting on my nerves!!  :(

Looks a bit breezy out there.  Wind is from the east. Don't want to be all negative but starting later today and right up to next Thurs. Winnipeg is supposed to have rain. If the weather network is right there will be a total accumulation of 25 - 30 ml of that time. Maybe that is not a lot of rain over that many days but the Chicks, P & T are in for a few wet days. I sure hop the weather people are wrong.

Good morning all.  Princess is huddled down trying to cover the squirming chicks and looking around, probably waiting for the breakfast delivery.  And here comes breakfast, a goldern yellow coloured bird that Princess is defeathering in the nestbox.  A little earlier one of the chicks coughed up a huge pellet. Another milestone perhaps? Sometimes it isn't a good idea to have the full screen view. :D
