FalconCam - the Shaw Spotlight FalconCam is being broadcast Monday to Friday from 9am to 10am on Shaw (Ch 9) & Blue Curve (Ch 105).
Only exception is when City Council broadcasts start at 9:30am, in which case, the FalconCam will broadcast from 8am to 9am.

We have our first hatch. Looked just in time to see Ella leave to discard something and at first saw 3 eggs and soon a chick and a shell. ;D
Ella returned to take her place, some shuggling and snacking on the shell for a boost of calcium. :)

Hatch was at 0437h, first meal was at 1119h. First meal was a little later than I'd have liked, but she's raised chicks successfully for years, so I try not to second-guess her.
Hard not to though given her sister Spencer didn't feed her first hatches - I removed the first two the first year (one survived, one did not) and pulled 3 chicks in year two at eight hours old and none of them survived. She nested elsewhere for four years but never had any chicks, so I have to assume, they didn't make it through the first few days.
And while I really liked Hurricane, she was a devoted, tough mama, my recollections of her nesting when we had an operating cam in Brandon (sure do miss that cam), she was a pretty stingy feeder for her chicks. Her chicks were fine, just smaller/lighter than others we had at the time. She did have a couple of chicks that died in the nestbox, but they were more weather related as I recall. Ella's chicks have all survived and it seems she is more like her mom Hurricane than Spencer fortunately! And she takes after Hurricane in other ways so taking after her mom is not a bad thing at all!!
Why so long for the first meal? Maybe its because it has been more than a little cool over the last 24-36 hours or perhaps its because another of the eggs has a significant pip in it and Ella wasn't inclined to get off quite yet. Or heck, maybe Pip was late with breakfast, though its not like she let him know they'd had a hatch, she's been very quiet and tight on the eggs/chick since 0330h (yup, some of us disturbed sleep last night, nothing to do with the peregrines ::)). Or maybe the chick wasn't active enough to convince her it wanted/needed a meal. Whatever the reason, chick one has hatched safely and Ella's has been reminded that a) she now has to share her snacks with the wee white fuzzy ones and b) that wee white fuzzy ones wobble a lot.

Oh I do like Ella but every year I worry she's not going to feed all the kids. As I've said before, usually not a problem for Ella and I recognize my concern is a hold-over from a bad decision Ella made in her first year as a mom and years of her sister Spencer's "problem" with feeding chicks immediately after hatching.
This is Ella's first year with 4 chicks AND the first year all of her eggs have hatched. That extra mouth is an exponential increase in the need for food. Pip tends to bring in smaller prey items, she needs to nibble less while she's feeding and feed more often - but that is just what would make me happier, she'll do what she is going to do ... :)

It could be - and yes I'm keeping an eye on the youngest two chicks.
Would help if Ella wouldn't stand in front of the camera during feedings ...

For those who don't follow us on Twitter - I pulled the two youngest chicks from the nestbox to get a bit more food TLC. They have made it this long which is great and I'd really like them all to survive and thrive so Ella & Pip get to take care of their older two and the younger two will get some one on one care for a couple of days and then they should be stronger and more mobile when they get back.
That's the plan at least - and we'll keep folks in the loop as we can.

a) find out what the problem is with our YouTubeLive connection (our friends at Shaw Spotlight are on that one)

Doesn't mean he didn't make a fatal error, but stranger things have happened and this year is strange ....

Kid is fine. Peeled him off the outside edge of a balcony downtown at 10:30pm last night. Chick was singularly ungrateful - tried to eat me he did.
Dropped him off at Prairie Wildlife late last night promising I'd take him back first thing in the morning if he got a clean bill of health. He did, we did and we managed to get him back in the box with scaring any of his siblings into fledging before they're ready!! Win-win!
Kid has tried to fly again and seems happy enough to hang with his family. Maybe it will rain and he'll get turned off the idea of flying for a few more days!

I haven't sorted the coding problem with this current version of the database, and I suspect I won't be able to and I'm keeping my fingers crossed the next upgrade will be a clean slate and all will work smoothly (you have no idea how big my error logs are these days!!)
Having said that, I'm going to try and post the Twitter posts here again, the error seems to be showing up less on the logs the last few days. Know that sounds gobbledygook, but its a thing. These are the highlights, you should click on the posts and visit the Twitter feed to catch up on some more pedestrian stuff that y'all have been hearing from me for years!! :) You don't need an account to follow the feed and 99% is just observations about the birds - I'm not much of a retweeter and rarely if ever "chat" off-topic. All peregrines, all the time ;D

a) you need an account to access our tweets
b) you (the reader) must read/post less than 600 tweets/retweets per day to be able to read our tweets even if you are logged in. You want to read/post more, you need to pay a monthly fee.
c) twitter feeds are not connecting - they show as "nothing to see here - yet" when of course I have been tweeting since 2013.
no comment on the first two points (yes, they are that stupid)
as for point c, there seems to be some discussion on whether this is a temporary glitch or a permanent state and Twitter isn't say. Maybe now that they are back to work after July 4th, we will have some answers or it will magically work again.

I'm also going to start working on Plan B ... & hope that I won't have to use it ...

We were on the road to band birds yesterday so not much time to post about the kids at the Radisson.
What I can tell you is that right now
Juno (our lone female) and Viking (GT) are still at the nestbox.
Mercury (RT) fledged on July 3rd but reappeared late yesterday, landing nicely on the corner of the nestbox in time for a meal.
Apollo (YT) our first to fledge & to be rescued & returned and fledge again, hasn't been back to the box in the last couple of days. But he's the one who's been flying the longest so we hope he's got the basics down and that he'll reappear on camera soon.

The live Radisson FalconCam had been showing 3 falcons sitting on the Alt Hotel sign for quite a while - which was very nice to see! 2 flew off about 2:55pm, Winnipeg time, and the cam was trying to locate them. :)
Oh, 2 came back around 3:13pm and another arrived on the edge of the roof - so they were coming and going.
At 3:34pm I saw 3 on cam - but not able to watch or post much more right now...

I've found that if I post a twitter feed here immediately, then it just shows the link
If I post it a couple of hours after, it works (photo & text just how it looks on Twitter) 50% of the time
If I wait a day, it works 90% of the time.
I think that it is forum related since I have some other weird error messages that come up.
In the future it could be Twitter related if Elon Musk doesn't get his fingers out of Twitter ... at the moment, one must have a Twitter account to view Twitter. AARRGGHHHHHH
The upshot is that I am going to have more than just a little end of season housekeeping to do over the winter ....

It looks like Twitter has either fixed the problem or tweaked its policy about Twitter feeds embedded on websites and blogs.
Upshot is that the Project tweets are showing again on the FalconCam webpage - but only the last 7 days, earlier than that requires a Twitter account.

Just a note, we are trying to fix a problem with the forum and so some things (like the Tweets below) will look strange ... hopefully we will get everything back up and operating as it was ... what we are working on will not damage any of the data, just the way things look.
