2010 NESTING SEASON
The falcons at Waukegan have chicks - I'm not sure how many have hatched so far. The female here is Fran, who has been at this site since 2001. I don't know who the male is.

Yes, that's exactly what it is, Kinderchick! Only two of the eggs hatched.

Doesn't a parent usually consume an egg or dispose of it, if it doesn't hatch, so as not to attract predators? :-\

Not necessarily - sometimes they just leave the unhatched egg or eggs in the nest. Sometimes such eggs are collected when chicks are banded, and analyzed to see why they did not hatch.
Sometimes the eggs end up being damaged or disintegrating after a period of time, especially if they are infertile eggs. If an egg has been broken during incubation, a parent will quite often consume it.

Even though they look a little awkward at this stage, they are still pretty darn cute!
Love the captures....especially the third one! "Hey, I know you, look how cute you are"! ;D

When an adult consumes an egg or eggshells, its to replenish the reserves they expended producing the egg. Getting rid of eggs is easy for them to do if it was just a question of attracting predators.
