Title: Other Birds of Prey Sightings in Manitoba
Post by: The Peregrine Chick on April 03, 2015, 12:40
Sue asked me where to post sightings about other raptors here in Winnipeg and I think this might be a good place  ;)

Thanks TPC. Just wanted to let anyone interested know that we've had three eagles (an adult and two juveniles) hanging around the Assiniboine River between the perimeter and the Moray Bridge the last two days. Lots of interaction in the air between the juvies. Got a few photos and a short video but not great.

Thanks Sue... Will look to the skies, next time I'm crossing the Moray Bridge. :)

Hi Doreen,

I just saw your post and noticed that your question had not yet been answered.

I think you are absolutely right, that this is an immature Cooper's Hawk. I am no expert on hawks, but here is a photo of an immature Cooper's Hawk:

Yesterday, while driving on Portage, close to downtown, I saw a large bird circling back and forth over Portage. It was low enough that I could clearly see the white head. Is it usual for bald eagles to be around at this time of year? Or did some bird not get the migration message? Or do the eagles not migrate? (Sorry, I'm not quite up on all who do and all who don't)

For the most part Eagles migrate but there are always some that hang around throughout the winter and seen in and around Winterpeg.

I saw an eagle right downtown last week as well.  I was stunned.  Going northbound at Portage & Colony.  That was new for me at any time of year.
