What does egg and hatchling mean underneath our user names? Does this have something to do with how many times we are posting?
Thanks
-
That must be it because the 'hatchlings' have 10 posts or more and the eggs don't! - very cute! ;D

Ah, I see. Thanks. That is cute.

lol, I wondered that too. At first I thought, what I am only an egg! I need to start posting some good stuff. :D Then I noticed that "Peregrine Chick" thats Tracy, the administrator and head of this project is calling herself a "hatchling". lol So then I was alright. Notice that she has 5 stars however. We have only 1. Wonder what we gotta do to get another star? lol. I am not working right now and have lots of spare time to watch the cam,, if she wants us to post everylittle thing that happens I am up for that when I am here. lol.
I also wondered if they record all the live feed, or not, maybe we can provide a valuable service if they don't. Like snap a pic of stuff, and at least post when we see something happen. What do you guys think?

Sorry Gang, I haven't quite added all the posts I want to yet, one of which was explaining what the different member groups are/mean ... I'll be posting the information in the FAQ section as well in case you need to find it again.
There are two types of members - one type is based on the number of posts you have made, one is not. I have both on this Forum, however all of you are the first type, the second type is for the "staff" that help to run this place. So why have a post-based member classification? If you have questions, its nice to be able to ask someone that you can tell have been active on the Forum for awhile. The assumption is that if someone has made lots of posts, they probably have some idea about what is going on.
So what are the post-based member types?
Egg - 0 to 9 posts (1 star)
Hatchling - 10 to 99 posts (2 stars)
Chick - 100 to 499 posts (3 stars)
Fledgling - 500 to 999 posts (4 stars)
Old Bird - 1000+ posts (5 stars)
I have 5 red stars because I'm the Administrator which basically means that this is my sandbox ;D
-
"I have 5 red stars because I'm the Administrator which basically means that this is my sandbox"
LOL. Yes it is, and thanks for allowing us to play in it!!!
-
I don't run with scissors and I play well with others ... ;D
-
I keep trying to compose imformative and nice posts, but instead am laughing at how we basically all, want to be involved. Then are asking about stars. lol. Gosh I wished I was out there, my forest ranger friend told me last year I would love it, but with my dial up i just couldn't see, but this year, wow. oH it has gotten too dark to see, however good day in alll, as I was away a few hours this afternoon and came back just in time to see them switch and everyones looks okay. Yay.
Oh and Tracy, where I live, its all about predators, owls , eagles, osprey, hawks, apparently there are 10 nesting sites for the peringrine falcon in NB also. Starting to thilnk the unidentifed (hawk?) that was here on my railing in April was maybe a peringrine. Never did identify it for sure. The woods go silent every now and then, and I know to look up and around,, and there is usally a majestic predator bird to see.
-
Thanks so much for the explanation Tracy. I play well with others also. :)
-
So what are the post-based member types?
Egg - 0 to 9 posts (1 star)
Hatchling - 10 to 99 posts (2 stars)
Chick - 100 to 499 posts (3 stars)
Fledgling - 500 to 999 posts (4 stars)
Old Bird - 1000+ posts (5 stars)
How come I have 2,558 posts but only two stars? Two green stars means 2nd year? What are gold stars? ??? ;D
-
Excellent question Liz....
I also only have 2 stars and I don't know what gold stars are ???
-
Remember when TPC was asking for those of us who wanted to stay to do so by the end of the year. She changed our colour to Green and added 2 stars for those of us who wanted to stay with the forum.
-
the gold stars are associated with "non-phanatic" (meaning, not here in year one and continuing). the number of stars associates with the level (1 for egg, 2 for hatchling, etc). two green stars means two years on the forum, I suppose. :) So bccs has 5 gold stars for being an old bird, but we old birds who were here in year 1 have 2 green stars like all other year 2 folks (but the words "old bird" sooooooo make me feel better ;) )
I like my green stars, I hope we get another one next year. ;D
-
Totally makes sense -- I did remember about the "2 green stars". And Kinderchick is blue - teacher.
-
Ahhhh...okay, I get it now!
-
regardless of how many stars you all have, you are great at coaching us 'new to the forum' phanatics along-thank you...and the three sibs are back together for a lovely family image
-
LOL! Yeah, there's usually someone around who can answer a Q.
-
first year .. one star
2nd year ... two stars
3rd year ....you get the drift
-
I believe if you get a "special class" (like phanatic or classroom) then the # of stars has to do with how many years you've been active. otherwise you get the regular small gold stars associated with # of posts.
so, phanatics is a special designation and we've been here 2 years - so 2 green stars. classroom is another, and kinderchick is in her first year, so 1 blue star.
it may not be true, but it fits the available evidence. as my grad school advisor says.... "it doesn't have to be wrong"

Hmmmmm...still don't really understand.
I obviously have to start posting. I feel like I've been a member for about a hundred years and I'm still an egg! ;D :o
-
Look again Cammie, you are now a hatchling ;D
When you reach 100 posts you become a chick
When you reach 500 posts you become a fledgling
And when you reach 1000 posts you become and old bird.
So you'd better get talking. ;D
-
No Cammie, start Singin' ;D
-
Okay, because I'm not making it up as I go along ;) :P ...
There are two types ... yellow stars are related to the number of posts a person has made, other colour stars are for "groups" and are not related to the number of posts a person has. If you are the member of a group (phanatics, classroom) your yellow stars don't show but your "group" star(s) do.
Number of yellow stars - related to the number of posts you have made
Number of other than yellow stars - related to the length of time you have been a contributing member of a particular group. Phanatics have been active for most of the last twelve months so they have two stars as this is their year two. Green was just a random colour choice for the phanatics. This is only year one of the Classroom group, so only one star there. I have five starts cuz its my Sandbox ;)
Does that help?
-
Works for me!
Thanks for the explanation TPC
-
I LIKE THE GREEN!!!
;D
I want another green star next year. I'm collecting them. 8)
-
Okay, because I'm not making it up as I go along...
Well, I hope you know that I was just kidding when I said that,Tracy! :-* It sure wouldn't look good if the teacher were to have to do some "time out"! ;) Thanks for the detailed explanation of the stars. I do finally get it, I think! And I really do like my big bluestar! ;D
-
And willmax has two gold stars!!
-
Okay, I have a question related to the number of posts, rather than the number (or colour) of stars. . . Sometimes I have noticed that a couple of my posts have the same number (rather than increasing). Is there a reason for that, or is it just a glitch?
-
Saoirse, the number is always the total number you have posted. In all threads you will have the same number shown. When you post again, all threads where you have previously posted will show the new total.
-
BCBird, I appreciate your taking the time to answer this. It's not an important question really, because I'm not especially interested in the number of posts I make. Maybe I'm missing something obvious but it surprised me to notice that I posted once (say at 5 pm, just an example) and it showed, say, 170 posts. Then I posted again further down the same page and it still showed 170. As I say, it was a surprise that I didn't understand (still don't really!). I suspect some of these things will make more sense to me as I continue to participate in the forum.
-
Hey Saorise, it can also depend on when the database is in maintenance mode - it holds off on the recounts until it has finished its maintenance so that the count is correct. When its finished it recounts everyones totals so you will never "lose" a post in your count unless I delete your post. Does that help?
-
TPC, thank you, now I get it -- sorry I was a bit stunned on this one. As mentioned earlier, it wasn't actually the count I was worried about, just couldn't figure it out.
-
No worries :)
-
after all, not being able to figure something out started the whole "red/blue who's online" thread that refuses to die... ;)
-
LOL, Pchemist! LOL! Yes, it does refuse to die! :P
-
We have modified the "star" system this year ....
Yellow stars are for first year members - they are based on the number of posts (see earlier in this thread for a breakdown of post categories)
Green stars - 2 = Falcon Fans - members who joined last calendar year (2010)
Green stars - 3 = Phanatics - members who joined before 2010 and who are still active on the Forum
Blue stars - 1 = Classroom - members who are teachers and junior or middle school students
-
Update on the star system as a result of the revisions in categories completed last year (2012).
Classroom - 1 green star - teachers or students
Falcon Fans - 2 green stars - member for at least 1 year who has posted between 10 and 49 times
Phanatics - 3 green stars - member for at least 2 years who has posted a minimum of 50 times
Yellow stars are related to the number of posts you have made so far on the observation threads. When your membership upgrades to Falcon Fan or Phanatic, yellow stars are replaced by the green stars.
-
Well now, is there a brown star? If so what does it signify?
-
Hey bccs, you are what you are. Aren't we all phanatics no matter how many years or posts we have done?
-

Heck Gingerlee, doctors have been trying to put a name to what I am for years. Don't know, don't care, labels, schmabels, I yam what I yam....... some sailor guy said that.
-

No brown. As I posted earlier, just yellow for the new members, green for the long-time members, blue for classroom members. Only a limited selection of colours and number of stars available so had to have a system.
