Title: MI / Lansing - 2009-12
Post by: Alison on June 17, 2009, 22:13
2009 NESTING SEASON

Since we don't have a listing for Michigan, I thought I'd post this here.  Stelco, born in 1997 at the Hamilton nest, and her mate MP have four chicks at the Lansing nest. Last year they successfully raised five chicks. Stelco laid five eggs in both 2006 and 2007, but none of them hatched. Stelco has been at this nest since 1999.

Found this on Alison's site just now posted by Dina.  Sad news.  Hope she does not mind I post it here.  Just highlights the different types of challenges our peregrines face.

They went to band the 4 chicks yesterday and one of them jumped out of the box to it's death.  The other died on the way to being banded, they said he was very anemic. Saw the two remaining babies napping in the nest but it's dark, they look a good size though - hope they make it.  Apparently they were covered in lice and so was the nestbox.  The box and chicks have both been dusted with parasite powder.

I'm always interested in the lice/flea reports, we really haven't noticed that in our boxes and it makes me wonder if the fact that we have cold cold winters doesn't help our birds out ... kills whatever is leftover in the box so the following year the birds start out with a clean slate.  But that is purely speculative on my part, it may just be blind good luck ... and generations of a family of neat freaks  :-\

This is so very sad, for Stelco and MP to lose half of their clutch at banding. I always thought one of the principles of banding was that it should only be done when it was safe to do so, and this kind of loss does make me wonder.

I know a number of sites mention each year that the chicks do have avian lice, but not to the extent of being a problem for them. I hope the two surviving chicks will be okay.

I hope they survive too, it was so exciting to hear that Stelco had reclaimed her site again so hoping the other two make it.  Would putting in a new box or disinfecting and cleaning this one make any difference at all - at the end of the season I mean?  I did wonder about why the chick would jump to it's death however I'm not really experienced enough to comment on that myself.  I was always told that age was the issue, if too old then they would jump but they looked pretty white to me.  I wonder if their illness made have had a bearing on their reaction.  Or maybe the little chick didn't mean to jump but kind of accidently did it just to get away from them.  Poor little thing and poor parents having to witness that  :'(

The chicks were the right age for banding - big enough to band and not so big as they think they can fly.  And accidents do happen, usually its not really a jump but rather they are close to the corner or an edge and get spooked and they try to get out of the way ... not an intentional jump thinking they can fly but it is intentional movement away from the banders .... the chicks are hardwired not to jump until first flights - if they weren't hardwired this way, it would be a major evolutionary flaw ...

... did I make the shades of grey clear enough ??

Yes you did TPC, thank you.  It breaks my heart to think of that poor chick falling to it's death like that.

Trampolines for peregrines, going on the list ... right under the umbrellas for the nest box.

Thank you for the response, TPC. I didn't for a moment think that the chick jumped intentionally. I did, however, wonder about inexperienced banders, perhaps unused to handling peregrines or other birds. Since birds do not have diaphragms, they have to be handled very carefully so that they can breathe . . .

A peregrine on the perch in the early evening (the time on the photo is not correct). It's hard to tell, but I wonder if this might be a juvie - seems really dark in front.

It seems that Stelco has probably left on migration. Another female has shown up at the nest. She is W.C. from Lima, Ohio, band black/green M/34. She was there last winter, but Stelco returned in the Spring. The resident male, M.P. (stands for Moores Park) is still there, and he and W.C. have been spending time in the nest box. Haven't seen them there yet, but I have seen pics.

2010 NESTING SEASON

The falcons at this nest site have been Stelco from Hamilton and her mate, M.P. (for Moores Park). During the winter, a female from Lima, Ohio named W.C. has been spending some time at the nest, as she did the previous winter. M.P. has also been observed at the nest.

So far, Stelco has not returned this year. Time to come home, Stelco!

Looks like first egg here this morning - can see it on the cam.  I guess Stelco isn't coming home or she's very late this year  :-\

Two eggs now.  I guess our Stelco won't be coming home this year.  She would be 13 years old this year...not the first time she didn't come home from migration though so hopefully she's just decided to stay south and enjoy the weather..

First hatch at Lansing! W.C. and M.P. have at least one chick, and I think I see enough eggshell for two chicks to have hatched now.

2012 NESTING SEASON

4 eggs were laid at this nest site this year, as in 2011, as well...
