From TPC Twitter or X
Radisson - Ella & Pip returned home on Mar 14th but they have been busy defending the nest from a very dark unbanded female. Took a while to confirm IDs, but as they were so early, not a problem. Not much dancing in the box yet, but Ella has started renovating.

You are Welcome! ;D

I'm not on any social media either., so the update is most welcome. I understood that we should be able to access information on Twitter/X without having an account, but no way will that work.
-
Have been wondering also..... as by now there had to be some birdie back at the nest. (Am not on Twitter either)
I can imagine TPC was likely devastated by Dennis' passing and hope she's doing ok, such a terrible shock and so very sad.
Look forward to following Pip & Ella again this year and hope they can defend the lovely West Nest against the interloper.

I, also, am not on Twitter/X either and very much appreciate updates here.

As a note, you don't have to be on Twitter/X or Instagram to get updates, you can just visit the sites - they are all just sightings, very little "extra" fluff.
On the main page of the website, there is a link direct to Twitter/X, just click the link and you can follow along - don't have to sign up or anything.
Same for Instagram if you only want to see photos - I'll be adding a link on the main page shortly. My recommendation - check the Twitter/X feed, I don't always have photos to share so there is more information there.
And yes, as I have been doing for the last number of years, I will be posting the links here as well.

Ah! A challenge 8)
Right…so add the first word to the other word, which equals a word, then carry the 1 to add to the second word, to then multiply that to one word, and you get:
Excellent news so eggs soon! ;D :P

Noooooo! :( But, this is nature. We must remember that they are wildlife and wildlife have survived for centuries and will continue to do so without manmade nests. Thanks for this update and photo TPC! :)

Oh NO!! :o - This is terrible news. :' ( Seeing that it's quite early in the season, is there a chance of Ella laying more eggs?? ....In the NOT wrong place this time?) The stupid East Ledge has been the downfall of too many eggs/chicks over the years!! >:( :-[ (Would it have been easier to guard the West Nest without leaving the eggs out in the open.... as it's more sheltered)?

Will have more info and photos in a blog post later today :)
So far as I know - Ella and Pip are fine. Haven't had any reports of injured or dead birds and I have folks keeping an eye out. Looks like Ella blooded Hazel on the first day though! (ya Ella!)
Hazel is the grand-daughter of Annie from our first West Wpg nest - so great-granddaughter of Jules & Beau. Grandma was Miracle, formerly Dakota Ace's mate in Fargo
Pandemic is son of Annie and Fleming who was also from the West Winnipeg nest, but her parents were Ty (from the Radisson) and Faith (from Duluth MN). - he's quite beautiful.
-
Oh no. maybe they will go west site. darn. I hate these fights especially when there are eggs involved.
will be waiting for news
-
Although difficult to hear that Ella and Pip have been displaced (hope they are okay 🤞🏻), it is still encouraging to know other peregrines are here, and technically adding to the bloodlines and peregrine recovery.
Guess we will wait to hear about what Ella and Pip will do or go, and hope they remain a pair at a new nest site.
-
Did I miss The new post by Tracy or no new news. Was hoping to find pip at west nest or jollies old site
-
No news . Thought we would hear something

Update - absolutely nothing going on at the moment :) seriously.
Usually it is Hazel sitting on the box edge though from time to time Pandemic comes in.
Sometimes Hazel wanders inside to fiddle a bit with the gravel (no massive rearrangement like Princess or Ella)
Very occasionally Pandemic turns up with a snack, Hazel snatches it away - sometimes she stays and eats on the box edge, sometimes she heads off elsewhere.
What is annoying about this pair is that except for sitting on the box or sometimes on the sign before they do not sit anywhere within range of the cameras - frustrating to the nth degree.
It is a waiting game ... I haven't seen any hanky-panky but every morning my fingers are crossed when I check the cam!

Not yet, but I'm hoping to find out who a bird is I've seen hanging around at another nestsite - I'm hoping it might be Pip or Ella - its been tough getting a good idea of size but I am hopeful. Have to do it old school (with a spotting scope) I'm afraid, so the conditions need to be right - good light, little wind, lots of patience and more than the usual amount of luck. The bird has been relatively consistent in its visits so fingers crossed I will be able to "see" who they are.
-
Good luck Tracy.
I know how hard it is to use scope sometimes, and here always windy lol
Hope it’s Pip and Ella
But congratulations. On an egg here

Sad that Ella & Pip have been ousted from the area and their eggs lost. :-[ So far no news is good news for them hopefully. With the recent brutal weather, (pounding rain, hail, wind)....not sure how they would have fared, especially if the chicks had hatched, so I'm kinda thankful they hadn't. :-X.....But it's nice to know there is an active nest on the West Side this year. ;D

Note, the egg on the right is the first egg, the one on the left, the second.
How do I know this? I watched Hazel poop on the first egg as she laid it. Think the whole biology of egg-laying came to quite a surprise to her.
She's very different from Princess who I watched the longest laying eggs - Princess used to keep her but down and you only knew she'd laid her egg when her tail would pop up afterwards. So far with Hazel, she stands up tall (and she seems bigger than Princess or Ella) so her egg drops a couple of inches down onto the gravel. Yet another reason why the gravel works, even after such a dramatic entrance, they haven't so far, rolled afterwards. Makes knowing she laid an egg easier but it makes one wince a bit as the egg drops.
-
Oh my goodness! :o
I've been kept away from this online forum by real life this spring. Now getting caught up, I'm amazed at the events.
From dread at seeing eggs on the infamous ledge, to sadness about the ousting of Pip and Ella with the loss of their eggs, to anticipation of watching a new chapter unfold in the nest box with Pandemic and Hazel, it's been a dramatic start to the season.
Fingers crossed for a successful nest for the first timer newcomers.
Also hoping that Pip and Ella have successfully renested.

I look forward to the live cam. Are we close to going live TPC?

I look forward to the live cam. Are we close to going live TPC?
I think so ... with the change at Shaw ( they are now Rogers) there have been some changes in our partnership. They will continue to broadcast on their local community tv channel (or longer daily I believe is still the plan) but they aren't able to to do the tech wizardry for the streaming. So we will be handling that at our end. I have half of it set up now, just working out the way (hardware or software) to let our cameras talk to YouTube. It has been going well (knock on wood) so we should be going live in time for folks to watch incubation and (fingers crossed) the hatch. My best guesstimate for hatch is maybe as early as June 21/22 with only the 2 eggs & the cool messy weather it's hard to be sure when hat incubation began. I'd like to be up running and streaming in a week if I can ...

Every time we get pounding rain / hail / high winds....etc, I feel SO RELIEVED that the East Nest isn't being used this year (Sad for Pip & Ella :-\) but hoping if they come back next year, that urge is GONE. :-X.... Looking forward to seeing the cam coverage when it begins! ;D
-
Thanks for your reply TPC and for all you do for us Phalcon Phanatics. I agree, this continuous rain has been horrific. Looking forward to the live cam, including incubation. And as Dennis often said, it's like watching paint dry. ::)
-
Have the eggs hatched TPC? Still hoping for a successful season and the live cam.
Nope - Hazel's & Pandemic's eggs weren't laid until after the Victoria Day weekend and it is 30+ days so a couple more weeks if my arithmetic is right

As a note, Twitter is being a bit of a pain again - or at least it is on Google Chrome. It seems to be fine on Safari and it has been fine on Google Chrome, but I'm still a bit suspicious.
Haven't got an alternate in mind, having said that, we do have plans to do some major upgrades to the site over the winter, so I've added it to the wishlist in case there is something.
AND YES, I will of course post here as well when the cam goes online.

Cam was to go online yesterday then I found out the first of their eggs hatched 3 days earlier than I was expecting. Then as I was checking on the time the chick actually hatched, I realized it hadn't been fed yet. So I kept an eye on the chick and then coming up on the 6 hour mark, I was consulting with Lisa at Prairie Wildlife Rehab on possible next steps ... and suddenly off popped Hazel and in came food. First time parents that they are and given some of the problems we've had with other parents, so I made the executive decision to hold off going live until I was able to watch Hazel and Pandemic a bit more. They seem very good parents during incubation - the fact that their chick hatched out earlier than expected is a good indicator of that. But when the chicks hatch its different and they have to learn fast or they can lose their chicks. Four of Spencer's eight chicks died because she didn't understand she needed to feed from the start and that was with Hart who was a more than experienced male. It may even be that Spencer lost up to 4 nests before she paired up with Hart.
Here is the current timeline ...
June 21
- 1436h - chick hatched
- 1846h - chick begging for food
- 1915h - meal 1
- 2355h - meal 2
June 22
- 0550h - meal 3
- 0750h - meal 4
- 1437h - meal 5
Hazel is doing all the feeding, Pandemic is hunting for her. Pandemic has gotten to brood almost right from the start which is something Princess wouldn't have done - nor Ella in the first couple of days. Different birds, different pairs, different rules.

And if you can't read the twitter feed on the right ... it shows for some folks and not for others - and it works more consistently on mobile devices (apple for sure) than on desktops.
There is some question if Chrome might be the problem or firewalls or ??? Having said that, it has worked at times on my Chrome browser. Haven't tried other browsers yet, so if others have, please let me know what you can see. I've also got a couple of IT friends looking into it for me. I can tell you that it works consistently on Safari. I'll post what if/anything I find out about.
I have another option I'm working on that might work more consistently across browsers while the cam is live, but no guarantee, so far it hasn't wanted to embed on the webpage, but it is early days for that piece. :)

Chick#1 is growing SO fast!!! :o It would be nice for him/her to have a little company but I guess at this point there's no way the other egg will hatch. - Still good to have a healthy chick for Pandemic & Hazel to help them get some parenting experience. :-*

After we switched over to the new view all was working great and Tot was visible and playing around.
No idea if the switchover caused it or if it was just YouTube Live running into a problem, but we lost the feed.
But we are back now - our partners at Rogers got the encoder software working again and we are back up and running. When/if we do another switchover this year, we'll automatically reboot the system I think, maybe that will reduce the chances we'll have to do it on a weekend!

Okay, name for Tot time.
Like a number of others likes the idea of naming a peregrine in Dennis' honour but there is a jinx/superstition component. If we can find a name for this or another chick that ties to Dennis (and yes I have a couple of ideas) and the chick dies in the next couple of months, do we do it again next year? After a number of years of naming chicks after people and having them die shortly thereafter, we got very superstitious and cautious with names. I think y'all have heard me say this before.
So, my inclination is hold off on naming Tot after Dennis - wouldn't like to jinx her especially as she is a solo chick and they often take more risks than they should do. So far she is being good - at 37 days old (today) she hasn't gotten out of the nestbox yet - which is much better than I thought when she started wandering out on the balcony at a younger age than previous Radisson chicks. Could be this will be the case with Hazel's and Pandemic's future chicks or maybe it is a one-off and she will the exception.
Two options to my way of thinking ....
1) We wait and see how she does before naming her - but once she leaves the nestbox we may not ever see or hear from her again. With only her parents to hang with, she may not come back to the box or the Radisson.
2) We give her an unrelated name and save giving a name in Dennis' memory to a bird that has made it through year one (5-7 out of every 10 chicks dies in year one). Tot started hatching the Summer Solstice so we could go with that theme for her - Solstice, Summer, Persephone, Litha etc - instead. We do have other chicks in the province, at least 6, none of whom I have/will be able to band safely. Chicks that have been rescued do seem to have a high rate of survivorship so its possible we could still name a 2024 chick after Dennis or we wait until the time is right.
Anywho, that's where I am at the moment with naming Tot ... comments?

I prefer option 2, to avoid possible jinxing.
Sole chick. Solstice! ;D
-
Agreed with Jinx avoiding names for now - Dennis will have his namesake when it's the obviously right/strong/healthy/successful one!! :-*- What would be even nicer is if this namesake birdie returns to Winnipeg multiple times in the future. ;D
-
I like Solstice.

It seems that the camera has been down since sometime yesterday. I know that TPC was talking about changing the angle again. Maybe something went wrong?

Not sure, could have been though there are a couple of steps between the camera and YouTube. Even if we don't change the view, YouTube starts to nibble on it after awhile. The system is lovely because a) is easy to use, b) free and c) works. Where it has a bit of a problem is when we run things 24/7 - its designed to broadcast short events, an hour or a day, but weeks on ends plays with its brains. Fair enough. We are working with our partners to find a way for me to get access to the encoding software (ya, not as simple as here's by cam feed, broadcast it on YouTube I'm afraid). If I can get access to the encoder, then when it goes down, I can reset the stream on YouTube and reboot the encoder stream myself which theoretically could make the process a bit faster - esp on weekends - last two "nibbles" have occurred on weekends - Murphy's Law.

Seems like everything had gone well this season, even if it has been a non-eventful one for the most part. 8) A shame that Pip and Ella lost their nest but we did get one healthy chick from the West Nest at least, and Solstice seems to be thriving. ;D Saw somebirdie on the west nest a few days ago, not sure who it was but it was nice to see!! 8)

Could have been Hazel or Pandemic or Solstice - they were all still around as of later last week.
Amazing to think they will all too soon be making plans to head south ... don't want to rush them away but there is a lot of off-season work planned ... happy to have them napping on the sign and nest box for as long as they want ...

Have all the birds flown south already?
