Derby, England

Derby Cathedral Peregrine Project

The cathedral is nearly 500 years old and there are records of peregrines nesting here over the centuries.
The nestbox (2006) and webcams (2007) are newer additions.
The Derby Cathedral Peregrine Project is a partnership between Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Derby Cathedral, Derby Cathedral Quarter & Derby City Council.

The birds at this nest are not banded, but according to the blog, they are the same pair who have been at the nest since 2004.

They have their first egg today:

Mom with the chicks; Dad usually perches on the edge of the nest and looks on.

The Derby chicks had a visitor this afternoon. The visitor did not stay long, and about one second later in came Dad to check on his chicks.

Dad stayed with the chicks until Mom came back. Later, Mom had the chicks neatly arranged.

One of this year's three chicks has been sighted some 61 kilometres southeast of the nest.

On 20th November, 180 days after it was ringed, one of the juveniles reared last summer was seen alive and well at the Egleton Nature Reserve at the west end of Rutland Water, the biggest reservoir in England. The bird had moved 61 kilometres in an East South Easterly direction from Derby.

The bird, a female, was ringed with colour ring 030 on its left leg. Steve Lister, a bird watcher visiting the reserve, saw the bird and another birder was able to read the number on the ring so a big thanks to them for taking the trouble to report the details to the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) who are responsible for bird ringing in the UK.

Meantime, I have continued to see both parents visiting the nest. The female visits frequently, and occasionally both spend time bonding in the nest. It is great news when one of the juvies shows up elsewhere safe and well.
