Nothing to report yet of course, but maybe if we have a thread ready for them, they will return. Will be interesting to see if Fiona liked the Radisson (and Pip!) enough to return.
This month we are going to be checking out the nestbox and replacing the gravel if we can (might be too frozen) or if not, knowing if we have too! Even though they didn't nest in the box last year, Fiona liked to stash her snacks there. Funny thing is that Pip would almost always follow her in - few minutes or within 24 hours - to retrieve said "snack". Very cute actually, she would place it very nicely in the corner and he'd just as nicely find and remove it. Chances are he brought it to her in the first place and I suspect he got to use it as a "gift" a second time. It was mostly post-chicks when pairs do some pair bonding that includes food transfers and bowing/dancing at the nestsites.

Welcome back Pip!
-
Welcome back Pip!
Not Pip - his coloured leg band is on the "left" leg. I think this is Hart from the Logan territory - he likes to hang out at the Radisson box in the spring when he's the first (often the only) bird back. He eventually gets pushed out by the resident male at the Radisson. If Pip doesn't return and Fiona does, Hart and Fiona could end up together though.
Pip isn't an old bird and neither is Fiona so unless they/one or the other has run afoul of something on migration, we will hopefully see them again. They were a good pair together. Would be nice to see them in the nestbox this year.
Time will tell

Oh sorry TPC, I misread your initial post.
-
Yeay!!! - You know I look up at that nest every day as I get off the bus for work.
Even in January..... even when it's -40 outside....lol...it's just a habit~!! ;D
Glad to hear they're back - whoever they are.
PLEASE stay on the West Nest this time!!! ;)

TPC.....if our returnees choose the West Nest, what are the chances we will have a live cam this season? ???

Sure hope we have a cam! :) - Saw a light coloured birdie on the west nest yesterday - it was so nice to know somebirdie is there. :-*

We will have a cam unless COVID-19 gets in the way, but so far, so good. Whether it will be Radisson or West Winnipeg or Logan, I can't say, depends on the birds and "the bug". ;)

:'( :( So very sad to read your post about Porter, TPC. Just as we are looking forward to a new nesting season and the live cam, comes word that one of Princess' chicks has perished. Not the news we want to read going forward. Thank you for sharing. :-*

Just finished reading the CBC article on Facebook - so sad, poor Porter. :'( - Sure hope it wasn't Pip who did that, I guess we'll never know. - Here's hoping for a great successful season for our 4 new eggs. 8)

As for this year's webcam, we are working on it. The balcony cam at the Radisson had some weird interference we had to sort out, now we have to swap around some feeds so we can get the view from the cam inside the nestbox working - last year the feed was on Logan remember, so we have some reworking to do.

Any updates, absolutely, been a weird quiet/busy year. Sounds like it can't be both, but it has been. What with Porter's death, birds nesting, birds not nesting, birds dating everyone and no-one, birds turning up, then seemingly disappearing and then the usual technical glitches. Cameras have to be replaced from time to time and as technology improves, we have to improve our tech to keep up. This year we have camera upgrades and tech upgrades colliding which would be fine, except that we only have one confirmed nest in Winnipeg ... right where the hardware upgrades were needed. Pandemic rules haven't made it any easier of course. But we are still working on getting us all a live feed streaming from the Radisson nestbox. Ella & Pip (more Pip I think than Ella) have very graciously moved the eggs back a bit from the camera, so when we do go live, you will have a better angle on them than you would have had two weeks ago. Bit of a silver lining.
As to when we expect them to hatch, Ella's counts have been mostly consistent over the last couple years - starting at 34 days after incubation began. Cold spring could mean that they could take a bit longer as it didn't seem (to me at least) that hard incubation really began until egg 4. So, best guess, mid to late next week.

You can always turn the volume down, a lot of cams don't have sound. ;) I bet it's way to windy up there to hear anything but the whistling and howling wind. :-\ ???
-
FalconCam came online this afternoon but had some trouble with a couple of browsers so didn't want to post until we'd done some additional tests ... some folks just couldn't wait for the official launch it seems :) :-* which I totally understand, I wouldn't want to wait either ;D

Please use/bookmark this link - as it helps us track usage which will hopefully help us get new cams online next year!!
And ignore the little red square - it is an ongoing puzzle why it appears and why we can't remove it! We had it last year and the year before ... one day .... ::) ;D

There looks like pips in the two remaining eggs! :-*

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO CONTACT TPC??? - THERE'S SOMETHING GOING ON AT THE NEST - A FIGHT?? I DON'T KNOW!!!! :o :o
-
I saw a shadow, there might be someone there, not sure if the 2 birds are stuck together or fighting but worried about the chicks getting hurt! :'(
-
I have tried to tweet Tracy but I am not good at this and don't know if I got to her. Those birds are in trouble.
-
My sister saw it start - She said this: ......."FIGHT - HUGE fight!!! One of them was on the babies. She got off when another bird came in. I assumed it was the dad with food, then all of a sudden they were in a huge screaming, biting, clawing fight. One of the babies got stepped on."....... :'( :'(
-
I have pm'd TPC to check the camera.
-
Last I heard Tracy was on her way.
-
I contacted Tracy, so she knows. I am sure she will post about it. I hope those babies are okay. :-\ :'(
-
Thanks, very good to know - not sure what she can do about it though.... unbelievable - the first day the cam is up!! :-\ - Would love to know who the interloper is.
-
Did they just fall off the ledge?
-
I am glad they are out of the box!
-
They seem to be gone - Please don't have fallen off the ledge.
-
Thanks, very good to know - not sure what she can do about it though.... unbelievable - the first day the cam is up!! :-\ - Would love to know who the interloper is.
I don't know who that is, I think it's banded. Not even sure who was fighting!
-
Must of been Ella fighting because she looks somewhat rough and I think she has a injured right foot. :'(
-
It seems to be all over - what the heck - Not sure if the chicks are ok though - they weren't moving last I saw.
It looked like the 2 birds had their talons locked together - might even have been Pip & Ella???
Did they just come unlocked on their own or did TPC have something to do with it?
I guess we'll find out something soon.
-
Just got a msg from Liz - she says 'I'm at the Radisson. - TPC is here. - She says all is ok. It was females locked together, not the parents. - Dad is with chicks. ;D ;D
-
7 :03 p.m.
I think Ella is on the chicks now. :)
-
I saw both chicks moving and I saw huge cracks in one of those eggs. I hope it's from hatching and not from being thrown around the box. :-\
-
Hopefully if it was damaged, the chick is still able to hatch.
-
Hopefully if it was damaged, the chick is still able to hatch.
I hope so ballywing!

All quiet on the western front!

Hey Folks
Just got back from the Hotel so haven't checked the cams or recordings figured I'd post here first.
We were working to get on the roof when the fight ended and Pip (by the clear white breast) returned to settle back with the chicks. Had to press the pause then to reassess going and opening up the nestbox.
If the birds had still been fighting it definitely would have been worth it but with the fight over and the adult back with the chicks then we have to way disturbing the birds and stressing the adults to check the chicks. And this is where the problem arises ... very young chicks have a very low survival rate in rehab - they just are so fragile. Over the last two years we have tried to save a six chicks and only two have lived past 24 hours. So if a chick were injured their chance of survival is even lower.
It would be nice to be sure we could protect them from everything but the reality is that we can do a lot and we are willing to do whatever we can, but there are times when we have to ask if we are doing something because we should OR because it something we want to do.
In this case I decided that leaving the Ella and Pip alone with their chicks/eggs was better for them all.
If a chick was injured and can't survive then it will die surrounded by all that it knows and is comforted by. If the chicks are shaken up but injured, then more stress will not help matters. If Ella and Pip are injured from their defence of their nest/young, then my appearance on the roof would cause them more stress which could exacerbate their injuries.
So now, we wait and see and hope for the best for this little family. It is an old cliche and oft quoted here - but Nature can be unkind to its children. Maybe she hasn't been too unkind this time, we will just have to wait and see.
-
One chick is being fed by a parent. I thought I saw two chicks moving but only one seems interested in feeding.
-
Pip just brought a meal, but Ella was reluctant to get off the babies...Now only one baby eating...Okay, the other one is eating now too. I sure hope these little ones are okay. And hope that Ella's okay... :-* ???
-
Ella(?) is back on chicks and one egg. The other egg has not been gathered/shuggled under. :-\
-
Thank you, TPC. If there's one thing we've learned on this forum, it's that we have to let nature do it's thing as hard as it is. :(
I'm glad things were calmed down when you got there. We definitely don't want those babies stressed!
-
Haven’t been here for ages but still guest watch a few times. Watched the drama and was very happy to see Ella back in the box with her family. Curious to know if the attacker is gone for good or still able to return to disturb the nest.
-
The fight was a bit of a puzzle.
It is late in the season to start nesting - not impossible but basically need 90 days to get from eggs in the oven (so to speak) to chicks to fledging. At this point chicks would be fledging end of August into September which is pushing it.
I understand thinking the Radisson is the nestsite the interloper wanted, its true site everyone wants BUT Ella is dominant, established and at the height of her reproductive defensiveness - huge risk for the interloper because Ella has everything and nothing to lose if you get my meaning. She wasn't giving up the nestbox period full stop.
Will the interloper return ... good question and one I can't answer. I can't see that it would be worth the risk since Ella and Pip retain control of the nestbox and they will be very on guard now! But that doesn't mean they won't - but will they get that close again, I wouldn't think so ... time will tell ...
-

-
All four tucked in under an attentive parent. I love that sideways look up!
G'night, all.
-
Not looking forward to it, but will go through the recording tomorrow and see if I can tell who Ella was fighting with. Did spot 2 of the 3 digits of Ella's band number near the end of the melee so more confident that it was Ella and a female interloper - has seen the feet earlier and they looked female in size so was pretty sure before but nice to know for sure.
Ella was just tucking chicks and eggs under her a couple of minutes ago and things looked okay. What little I was able to review tonight of the fight, though truly a knock-down drag-out affair, I was struck by how much the fight actually avoided the chicks/eggs. Not entirely of course but Ella knew where her babies were at all times and she seemed to keep the majority of the fight away from them. Very impressive.
Still not looking forward to watching the fight tomorrow but good to know these chicks have such a protective Mom.
-
It can't be easy to watch a fight between two beautiful birds that you love, TPC! Thanks for everything you do - we and the PF's are so lucky to have such a dedicated advocate :-*
-
It sure was terrible to watch, especially since all seemed to be going so well - the right nest choice, 4 eggs, 2 successful hatches, then BANG out of nowhere - Yikes! :-\ - Have to say I felt much better after knowing TPC had arrived - whether she could do anything or not. ;D - Looks like one of the eggs might have been too badly damaged and looks to be discarded by the parents - hopefully everyone else is ok and this is all done & dusted. 8)

While I realize this is nature's way, I am heartbroken to read the events from yesterday. I join all of you who await news that all is well at this site and our chicks and eggs survived the ordeal.
-
https://youtu.be/-y6TiHLsljg
As the chicks were being fed, I saw only 1 egg, although the other was likely hidden from view.
-
I missed all of this yesterday as I was at a funeral, probably good as I wasn't in the frame mind to see something like this.
Thank you TPC for going out there - I would have done the same thing! The kids look good so far today, they are currently being fed on cam. :)

Are we thinking this might have been Princess?
I've been through the video and though I couldn't see the interloper's band number, bird definitely didn't look like Princess - breast too white, no pattern on head.
-
I'm going to work on a longer report this afternoon/evening - upshot is everyone looks fine, really. Chicks were fed 5 times between the time of the fight and 1300h today, and they both ate each time. Ella isn't showing any signs of being injured, bit muffed up, but not as much as I've seen others, like Princess. And I'm sure her feet hurt a bit, but she isn't showing any impairment - sometimes you see them stepping lightly or what seems like awkwardly, actually it is perfectly normal during incubation and brooding - I keep thinking it must be like having both your feet fall asleep every time you have a nap with the kids. She's flying and bringing in food and using her feet to feed the chicks and herself, so she's not finding the after effects of yesterday's fight at all restricting.
And no, we haven't had any reports of injured peregrines - and I've notified the rehab organizations just in case.
-
Feeding happening now at 3:32E/2:32C. Two active squirmy fiesty chicks.
-
Peaceful little chick and egg pile, partly in shade. Lovey to see!
-
Maybe the other female will find Hart ?! Or maybe that was his new girlfriend and she came over to tell Ella to butt out! Seriously glad no one was seriously injured - that we know of anyway.
-
Both chicks just had a good feed, then were tucked under along with one egg. I couldn't see the other egg.

Ella sure showed her strength and did a great job of protecting her site, and I was glad to see that at least she and her chicks appeared well when the fight ended.
Hopefully the brave intruder is also faring well as life can be so difficult for these birds.
-
Are those pips on the eggs, or is it just wishful thinking?
-
I think there's still only 2 chicks there - never ceases to AMAZE me how fast they grow!! :o

No, bit too young - technically they should be close to banding age when they are big/strong enough to execute such a complex move 🤣
And it is: Waddlestompfaceplantwalk

Black Friday comes to mind when you speak of rain and mortality :'( - Hard to believe that was 12 years ago!!!
Also remember Trey and his house cleaning - Princess (wish we knew what became of her) and Trey were the King & Queen of the Radisson for so many years. :-* - Now their descendants are carrying on. ;D
-
Black Friday comes to mind when you speak of rain and mortality :'( - Hard to believe that was 12 years ago!!!
The difference this time is they are in the nestbox - and we have had lots of these kinds of storms and chicks in the nestbox haven't had any trouble and (knock on wood) that will continue to be the case.
Also remember Trey and his house cleaning - Princess (wish we knew what became of her) and Trey were the King & Queen of the Radisson for so many years. :-* - Now their descendants are carrying on. ;D
Well we do have some information on both of them ... Trey lived out his years as an ambassador bird in Florida after he was injured on migration. He died in late 2018/early 2019 from old age - he was 22 years old. As for Princess - she was 6 years younger than Trey and she was the aggressor in last year's fight in the Radisson nestbox with Fiona just a couple of days before Fiona moved to the east side ledge.

I'm not entirely sure I want an answer to my question, but TPC, is it possible that the remains of the 2 falcons at the bottom of the Telus pipe, one was Princess? Miss our Radisson Royals. :'(

Ohhhh - I didn't know Trey had died - 22 years is a ripe old age though (?). - I did know about Princess's skirmish last year but still wonder if she's out & about somewhere these days. - And yes, I have NO worries about the west nestbox - Safe & sound in there! ;D ;D

I'm not entirely sure I want an answer to my question, but TPC, is it possible that the remains of the 2 falcons at the bottom of the Telus pipe, one was Princess? Miss our Radisson Royals. :'(
Tracy posted on the Telus Tower rescue thread about the remains of the falcons. ;) I don't think it was Princess.

Nope, not Princess so no worries there. Haven't had any news of Princess since I last saw her fighting with Fiona in the Radisson nestbox last year.

sorry for the delay in posting folks, graduation season is among us and pandemic graduation celebrations take a bit longer than usual graduation celebrations to organize and attend!! After tonight, all done and will post a longer note on the banding and photos - mine and Dennis' (he's been off dealing with real-world stuff too!) tomorrow.
And speaking of tomorrow (June 25th) - voting for names for the chicks will run for one week starting tomorrow and ending on July 2nd. The chicks will be 35 days old and ready to fly. If we are lucky, they will have their names before they fledge!!
Link to the name choices and voting is: https://t.co/y2eollrVS7

I love this view and look forward to the next adventure the chicks make as they take their stroll down the "promenade" as I call the ledge and the occasional sound of the louvres. ;D

Ah one of the chicks has managed to figure out how to get up on the box edge along the north wall of the Hotel - that edge is less than 2 inches wide and it is right up against the wall - not much room to perch ... you can see the edge in this photo ...

Great pics, Dennis. They sure don't look very happy during banding. Luckily it doesn't take too long to get them back to the nest. I hope the parents behaved when the kids were kidnapped.

No chicks to see at the nest box, Tracy said something on twitter about changing the view. The Peregrine Chick
@mbperegrines
Box is still empty ... we will keep an eye out for the chicks & decide if now is the time to switch to the new cam.
-
:-\ I have a feeling that the chicks have fledged! :o
-
:-\ I have a feeling that the chicks have fledged! :o
It is possible - they are the right age though still a bit shaggy so I wonder. Because of some work on the roof the chicks have a wee bit more room to maneuver down at the end of the ledge - behind our ledge cam and the new space has more shade and concrete to lie down flat on to keep cool. So it may be that they are enjoying the little extra room to prep for fledging - or at least I hope so - I like when the kids have room to stretch their wings and run around and these 2 didn't do a huge amount of that in the nestbox ... so wingercize in the extra room (even if we can't see it) and fledge on a good day (it's raining here now - supposed to do that all day so no fledging today!). And when you do boys, come back to the nestbox to show off your skills at least a couple of times!!
-
Oh geeze, where are they?? - Hope they didn't fledge quite yet and that they're both ok! :-*
-
https://twitter.com/mbperegrines/status/1279550488900403202
-
This is what I observed on the web cam today. I saw an adult come to the box with prey. They picked at it a bit then maneuvered it from foot to mouth not eating it. It then took the prey and left the ledge. Off to feed a chick I hope!
My guess and only a guess is that the adult was taking the prey to a chick. So probably it has fledged or they both fledged.
Hope they are safe!

No sightings of the kids yet I guess? - Seems like they fledged so fast, hope they're ok.
They were out of the box at the right age for the Radisson and we have had other chicks fledge and never come back on-camera in the past. We have also had chicks - Logan comes to mind where the chicks left the box and never went back to it but mostly stayed close by. The ledge cam this year is only about halfway down the ledge and the chicks have a hole through the louvres where they can go in and get away from the sun when they want. New situation for us and because there is no way to predict whether chicks will hang out at the box or ditch it immediately, its hard to tell. As for fledging, they would be the right age for that too now, so it might be that when next we see them its because they fly back to the nestbox or like some of their predecessors (Hurricane is an excellent example) the last we see of them is their wings going out and off they go! But we are going to see if we can spot them this week - hard to do from the ground and hot weather will make them tuck down in the shade so it will be even harder to spot them. Having said that, Ella & Pip are still at the Radisson, so the chicks are likely closer rather than further away ...
More news when/if we have it.
-
Looks like the cleanest nest box ever!! ;D - Would like to have seen them stick around a bit..... but wherever you are, best of luck Lucius & Pericles!!!! :-*

Dennis & I made an early morning run out to the Radisson to see what we could see and besides watching Ella & Pip chase pigeons (they weren't hunting seriously - they gave up too quickly) and harass the window-washers setting up on the Kensington Building kitty-corner from the east-side nestledge. Pip seems to like the top corners of the hotel for perching - like her Grandmother (Princess) Ella likes the communication tower - both gave them excellent sight-lines to watch the window-washers.
As for the chicks - they are fine. We spotted one of the boys on the roof of the new Police HQ on Graham and then spotted his brother on a comm tower also on the HQ - will have to wait until Dennis processes his photos to know who was who! Both chicks looked very comfortable and first boy flew across the roof and then up to the upper roof where his brother was with little or no problem so my guess is they have been flying for 3-4 days now.
So all good news ;D

No red tape on right leg band so that would be Lucius ... Lucius is presumably the younger of the two - at banding he was just a bit more fuzzy than his brother. Interestingly, Lucius was the one who slid/slipped his way off the corner of the nestbox onto the ledge first. He was the one who was sitting on the edge of the new Police HQ a few days ago which is how we spotted the boys - Pericles was tucked behind a communications unit for most of our visit - if it hadn't been for Lucius on the railing, we'd have had to be very lucky to catch sight of Pericles!

Earlier this morning I happened to look and an adult had been in the nest box briefly. Then not much later a chick flew in with a small bird. I wasn't sure at first but the way it was jumping and stomping around I figured it was one of the chicks. :)
