At the end of last week as I was going home, what should I spot? (yes, its rhetorical) There on one of the West Winnipeg pair's favourite perches were two large dark birds. Unfortunately I didn't get a really good look at them, but usually doesn't take much for me. But erring on the side of caution (you know me, Ms Spontaneous Project Coordinator), I mentionned it to Dennis and the two of us have been keeping our eyes on all their favourite buildings ever since.
So while I have been inside working today, Dennis happened to going past one of the buildings during the course of his work and he looked up (can't think why ::)) and lo and behold, there were two peregrines on the corner of another of their favourite buildings. Hopefully these are them back for the summer rather than migration tourists. This building is very (very) popular with migrating birds, great location, great hunting, great nap perches and far enough away from the Radisson birds that there isn't any territorial misunderstandings.
Dennis & I will be keeping an eye on these birds and the buildings to see what transpires. We will of course ;) keep you all informed!
-
Wow, how great is this! Why is it that the Winnipeg birds return earlier than the Edmonton birds? And....if I remember correctly you don't share with us where the west-Winnipeg birds are?? Do they have a nest? Have they ever used it? Should I do my own reasearch perhaps?? ;)
-
i think the west is kept secret because of it's location .yes? i remember last year no one would say, so I assumed it must be on an apartment block ..or somewhere people wouldn't want to be bothered with crazy peregrin people milling about.
-
Below is a quote from one of Tracy's posts last year. I'm not sure how to change the color for this thing so we'll see once I post if it worked. Otherwise here's what she said. Doesn't mention the success of any eggs/hatchlings.
Not going to tell you I'm afraid. The problem is that the birds are hanging out on some buildings that are perfect for them but their presence is not always so easy for building management or building occupants. Also, if it is Lucy and Ivy or one of them with someone new, they are a new pair and so far the track record in this part of town has not been great. What is great is the location and the willingness of the people involved to welcome the birds and all the necessary "baggage" that comes with them. So, in order to give the birds and the people a break, we are keeping the locations anonymous for the time being. Will happily keep everyone informed on the birds' and their maybe babies progress though!
While I would love to share everything about all of our birds with everyone, the peregrines, their safety and the recovery effort take precedence. I hope everyone understands the reasons for the Project's decision, even if you don't necessarily agree with the decision.
-
I've seen them!
I also won't say anything as it's private :-X
Sorry everyone.. I just find it absolutely wonderful that we have more than one pair of fabulous falcons in Winnipeg.
Maybe this year will bring more chicks in our mix :D
To Trey & Princess......ahem ~ NEST ON THE WEST!
-
No we aren't divulging where the birds are hanging out, not because we don't want to share but because it makes it difficult for the building managers to do their jobs. If the birds decide to nest and if the building management & occupants don't have a problem become a focus of potentially intense public attention (which includes things like increased security and safety), then I will reconsider the Project's decision.

Safety of the birds , always first. and of course the privacy of the building they occupy.
someone asked why your birds are returning and not Edmontons, yet. we are further North and it depends where they winter.
that could be one reason.

Well said, T. I, for one, will not try to figure it out.
-
I don't know why our birds are back faster, but I think the fact that they didn't successfully raise chicks last year may well have something to do with it. I'm inclined to think that they were early returners and were on this side of the bands of snowstorms that pummelled Minnesota and the Dakotas (and southern Manitoba) and that they surfed their way into town right before they hit us here. We have seen transmittered birds stall when they hit storms so there is no way that Trey and Princess flew through them.
I have been keeping an eye on the hawkwatch results and there have been almost no peregrine sightings report - well there have been some but there have probably been 50x more kestrels and many more merlins than peregrines. And we know that there are peregrines nesting (in some cases lots nesting) where these hawkwatches are located.
Trey and Princess were back early - and since they haven't nested yet, it looks like they may have taken a break before getting down to the business of courting, but time will tell if that is right. If they lay their first egg about the 18th, then they will be nesting pretty much as per the norm. I would be getting concerned that the birds weren't going to return if we didn't see anything by early May. We have had them nest later - and Radisson in Edmonton did nest later last year - so we are far from running out of time!
-
Okey, dokey. Today (Easter Sunday) was a banner day for the WW birds. Its a pair, same as last year. Male is Ivy, Trey's son from the 2005 hatch from the nestbox on the Radisson. He has been coming back to the City every year since he hatched. In 2006 he nested unsuccessfully with his sister Lucy in WW. The following year he hooked up with a different female but we could never get her band number - heck we could never get close enough to either of them to be absolutely positive in 2007! In 2008 however Ivy returned after Princess and came to visit her at the Radisson, Trey "escorted" him out when he (Trey) returned a few days later. This morning I was able to read his band clearly and its him. The female will be a mystery, maybe for good, maybe just for awhile. She doesnt' have bands per se. She has a breeder's band or ringband on her right leg and nothing on her other leg. Saw her here last year and got a very good look at her feet today. Unfortunately, the only way we might be able to identify her is if we get very close AND if there are some identifying numbers on her band. Something to look forward to.
-
And no, you guys don't get to name her. We need to figure out her personality some before we start to narrow down our options. If we find out she had a name we can hyphenate it later on.
-
You know this is the second time in the past few weeks, I've read about a falcon on a nest possibly being a breeders bird. I can't remember the other place I read about it but it was somewhere in the US and was a female as well. I know this will sound awful but all I could think was 'yay, she escaped and she's free to soar the skies now'..!
Glad to hear about Ivy too... :D
-
Okay, still not telling you where the birds are nesting in West Winnipeg, so in order to tell you stories, I am giving landmarks (man-made structures of all sorts) other names which I will use consistently from here on in. There are three in this story - The Diner, The Bed & Breakfast (The B&B) & The Bleachers ....
-
So the day started with Dennis giving me a call to let me know that there was a peregrine at The Diner. We chatted, I mentionned I was thinking of taking my spotting scope to try and read band numbers (The Dinner is high but has nice clear angles for reading bands) even though the light was very flat - makes it hard to photograph and to use scopes for detailled work. I got ready and was about to head out the door when Dennis called again to say that in fact both birds were there and good luck since he was off to photograph Great Horned Owls.
I arrived at The Diner about 10 minutes later and both birds were still there (not a foregone conclusion, they do have wings and know how to use them) so I parked and thought about the best location for viewing since it was quite cold and the south breeze was too brisk to be at all warm. Suddenly both birds took off from the The Diner and headed off to The Bleachers and started some wonderful courtship flights and I just parked my butt on the hood of my car and watched them. After a minute or two I decided to call Dennis to see what he was up to since this is exactly the kind of thing he photographs well - even though the light conditions sucked. Dennis abandonned his owls and got back to The Diner about 4 minutes after the most picture perfect ... umm, snuggle ... took place. I felt terrible but had to tell him if only because chances are we would get another chance to photograph it if we waited. So the Ivy and his lady took up positions on opposite corners of The Diner and Dennis and I settled in to wait. I was rewarded about 10 minutes later when I got a look at her feet and was able to confirm the ringband and Dennis was rewarded another 10-15 minutes later when more snuggling occurred. Now young Ivy is a cute little bird - he has features of his Dad (Trey) and features of his Mom (Princess). He has a fuller darker cap than he used to but I couldn't see if he still has some of the lighter coloured features (from Princess) on his crown. He has darker banding on his breast and belly - definitely from Princess. Nice white chest though - again Trey's, but I couldn't really see if any of Princess' speckles are still there. I hope not, but I'm biased. :D
Anyway, back to the story ... Ivy is a clever little darling too, he had food stashed away and he went to his pantry on The Diner and brought back a treat for the female. It was amazing to see them side by side because she is a large female and he looks to be on the smaller side for a male - in other words, large size difference! Lots of talking and then they both retired to their corners - she with her lunch, him with a great deal of satisfaction. Another bout of copulation then they both took off to The Bed & Breakfast and we were just able to see there with our binoculars and spotting scope. Were glad about that since The B&B is where the nestbox is and where the pair of them spent most of last summer.
Dennis and I decided to follow them over there but shortly after we arrived they headed back to The Diner again. We naturally followed, and glad we were that we did. They were both back there and we watched another bout of gift-giving, some more copulation, then they moved over to The Bleachers again. The landed on The Bleachers and just as Dennis & I were hopping into our vehicle to follow, I heard & saw another peregrine zip by in the opposite direction. Just as we were on our way a merlin bombed through and though I was sure I had heard a peregrine I wondered if maybe the wind had screwed up the sound and I'd been wrong. So we arrived at The Bleachers and both Ivy and his lady were perched out of the wind but a bit closer to the ground and I was able to confirm his band number right before he bolted back toward The Diner and that is when I spotted the third peregrine. The female then bolted from The Bleachers to join the melee and by size we realized that the new bird was a female and the battle was on! The two females dove and hit one another and began flying and fighting their way back toward The Bleachers with Ivy pitching in. Gave us an opportunity to get a great look at them as they came back past us again. We hoped that they would come around The Bleachers again, but no such luck. It got quiet, then the female returned and was none too pleased with our presence on the ground and she was making some quiet, but seriously defensive flights about 40-60 feet over our heads. Ivy arrived after a few more minutes and rocketed through not much higher before they both returned to The Diner and then both headed off in the direction of The B&B. And that's when we lost them.
-
And yes, Dennis has photos ... 2+ GB worth of photos I think :o
He's promised to make me a CD of them and then we can post them on our gallery and I'm sure he will be posting them on his gallery as well! Will be sure to leave a post here when they are up and ready for viewing!
Nuts, now I actually have to MAKE a new gallery for these birds ;D
-
Great story, TPC. I can paint the picture in my head with these locations -- great idea!
-
OMG Tracy how wonderful is this ;D Looks like you might need a fledge watch this year in which case I would like to volunteer right here and now ( I live in West Winnipeg) ;D Looking forward to Dennis's pictures. 8)
-
Excellent story!! It felt like we were right there!
-
thanks Tracy. that was exciting. the first female came back, right. I must have missed that.
Good thing I do not live in Winnipeg eh!!!!
And the season has begun. :) :)
-
Wow! What an exicting story. You do it so well Tracy. It does feel like I was actually there. Thanks. I just hope no Peregrine gets hurt in all this. I know it is nature but I just don't want any bird getting hurt or worse.
-
The birds haven't started nesting yet and there was not attempt to take over the territory, just seemed like a peregrine passing through, or perhaps even Princess being informed that the real estated had been sold so to speak. There was alot of flying, flipping and yelling and then Ivy and the female were back no fuss.
-
Well she is the goddess after all how else do you think these stories come about?
-
April 2009
Our resident male is Ivy, a 2005 wild-hatch from the Radisson Hotel. His parents are Trey & Princess. His female sibling was named "Lucy" and his male sibling was not named that year. The female is not named as yet as she has a breeder's ringband which can't be read unless one is very very (6 inches away) close. We hope as they settle to nest that we may get an opportunity to get a closer look at her bands and maybe find out who she is.
-
...just seemed like a peregrine passing through, or perhaps even Princess being informed that the real estated had been sold so to speak.
Interesting -- this year it was Ivy escorting mum out of the house, not Trey escorting Ivy!
As for The birds haven't started nesting yet
Maybe not, but it sure sounds like there's a lot of "makin' whoopie" going on! :D It won't be long before she's decorating the house.
-
WOW TPC...what a day! Great explanations on everything!
First, I'll start off by writing, I really don't want territorial battles to happen. I know, I know, it's nature, but I hate it when one gets hurt (especially hearing about Mariah today :'().
Hard to believe that last year, Ivy was escorted out by Trey from their territory, and this year, Ivy and his mate are settling in quite nicely....and Ivy's mate doing some impressive aerial acrobatics to show this intruder she means business....what a year this will be. I will make sure to keep my eyes and ears open as I live in West Winnipeg! Yay for me...I live here and pass through downtown everyday. Just can't get enough of our peregrines! ::)
Question to you TPC...
Since we know Trey & Princess' nesting site and roosting sites...if you were to outline a radius of that territory and have the center of that radius at the Radisson, where does it stop? Just curious...
-

Territories aren't circular so radius isn't a good descriptor, particularly in urban centres where some landuses are ignored so to speak when it comes to determining territory sizes. And territories aren't of equal size, its all dependent on what is in a territory and how much food is available. The Winnipeg birds are very firm about their territorial boundaries but seem to be not particularly murderous in territorial defense/conflict/take-overs. As far as we know, we have never had a death or major injury due to territorial clashes in Winnipeg. The only female to be usurped was seen months later & the following year.
About the Radisson territory - it appears to run south to about McGillivray and north to wherever. Don't know exactly about the eastern boundary as the birds don't travel that way too often and there is no pair there to enforce the line. But I do know where the western edge is ... ;)
-

That would be the Nest in the West, as opposed to NEST ON THE WEST!
I can't guess about the north and east, but any chance the southern limit has to do with Fort Whyte?
-
Awesome story Tracy. Does Dennis every take videos of the birds, or just still shots?
I would have given a lot to have witnessed the situation you described. Not only are you a good writer, you fare quite well at teasing too. The old I know something you don't know senario ;D, chuckle chuckle.

Nope, southern limit has to do with the U of M territory. T-Rex used to hold the U of M one when his Dad (Pop) held the Radisson territory. Found them one day sitting near to each other on the Royal Bank at McGillivray and Pembina Highway. Only time I saw them near one another after 1989 when T-Rex hatched. In 1995 when Pop disappeared while Madame (his second mate) was incubating T-Rex turned up a day later and started feeding Madame and incubating her eggs. It should be said that T-Rex and Madame were together (not nesting) for a year at the U of M before she moved into the Radisson territory when Maud died after collided with a high-tension wire - don't know whether that previous relationship was the reason Madame didn't abandon Pop's eggs and/or T-Rex adopted them but it is what happened.
Oh, and the U of M territory? It hasn't been occupied since Trey left thought we do keep hoping.
-
So there is a possibility that Winnipeg could handle a couple more pairs of peregrines - one pair south terrritory and one pair in north/east territory - if there were enough food for all.
-
there a heap load of pigeons here by the Hotel Fort Garry ...
-
So I went for a little walk this afternoon to confirm my suspicions about where the West Winnipeg pair are hanging out. :-X And don't worry folks I didn't go near the buildings, wouldn't want to ruin a budding romance. Now here is the funny part. I realized when I got home that I can actually see the tops of these buildings from my back door. ACK! They have been so close for years and I haven't managed to see them. ::) Until the leaves come out I will be keeping a distant eye out.
-
If you can see them from your place, all you need is a good pair of binoculars and then you can enjoy them from the privacy of your home and no one would be the wiser ;D
-

Not quite that easy, there are habitat requirements besides the amount of food. Need to have the food they like/prefer in abundant supplies on their doorsteps, as you leave the downtown, that (pigeons) decreases. As you go west, you still have the river but also the airport and water treatment plants. Down south its pigeons supplemented heavily by seagull. As you go north, there is nothing but Oak Hammock Marsh. As you go east, you haven't really got anything. And the peregrines will only nest a certain distance from a waterbody and in this City, that's either the Red River or the Assiniboine River. The rest are too small. And you have to have high buildings with suitable surrounding buildings/natural features for all the things a nesting peregrine needs. Think of the Radisson, they hang out on the Sterling, Paris & Richardson Buildings in particular, they hunt over the exchange district and they cruise along the Red River for prey. Not many other places in town that meet those needs AND appeal to peregrines.
-

Had a pair there one year, but they were too close to the Radisson and they lost their eggs. They moved to Legislature the next year and it was still too close - they managed to raise chicks but it got a little hairy at times figuring out if everyone would fledge safely. That was the year Trey was hatched from the nestledge and may explain why T-Rex and Madame used the nestledge that year - they wanted to be out of sight of the Legislature Birds. Also had one on the St Boniface Basilica the following year - the female was T-Rex's first mate and she followed him downtown then hooked up with a young male from Brandon but the building was too low and it was exceedingly stressful for her as Madame used to buzz her location and the Basilica bells rang frequently (not just hourly) each day that summer. She and Trey hung out there the next year but she was content to just roost as no courting/nesting behaviour/attempts were observed. Basically, just too darn close and the Radisson pairs are the dominant pair in Winnipeg.

Good morning,
Saw Ivy or mate this morning perched on top of a building on my way to work...couldn't tell as I only saw his/her back side. What a Beauty!
I have an invested interest in our group of peregrines. ;)
-
Oooooooooooooooh - very clever allikat!!! ;D
-
;-)
-
;) ;)
Saw the falcon again on the way home on top of a letter of the building.
I'm so lucky, I get to see Ivy, his mate, Trey & Princess to and from work...Life can't get any better than this :)
-
Soooo - I was able to figure some stuff out, :-* - and was almost hanging upside down on the bus today, looking out the window hoping to see them - but as usual NOTHING - Sheesh - I haven't even seen P&T in real life yet! ::)
-
i've given up trying to figure out where the birds are. I figure i'll just leave it to the selected few who know where they are.
-
and that is when I spotted the third peregrine. The female then bolted from The Bleachers to join the melee and by size we realized that the new bird was a female and the battle was on! Sorry for the quality...but you must remember that these photos where taken from a long distance away, hand held @ 400mm. This just gives you and idea of what unfolded in mere seconds. Photos have been posted in the Peregrines West-End.
-
What an incredible gallery of photos Dennis. ;D Ivy is certainly a very handsome young fellow, just like his rockstar dad.
The photos of the encounter between the three adults are amazing. I don't know how you managed it, given the speed at which all of this happened. 8)
-
Ivy and his female were playing at the B&B today. Dennis and I tried to sneak onto the roof to check the box without them noticing but no such luck. They are defensive of the nestbox (a great thing) and there is a nice scrape in the gravel - looks perfect for a clutch of 4 eggs. Nothing yet, but we will be keeping a close eye on the site.
Dennis did manage to snap some photos, but they were flying very fast (but close) and the light was flat which makes detailed photos difficult to capture. You may or may not have new Dennis photos to see shortly but I have a photo or two of the scrape, but I'm not sure how "viewer-friendly" they are but I'm sure I'll post them in the next couple of days.
-
To help you ID the West End Birds other than by size when seen together. Jewel (female) being larger and the thin Breeders Band that can not always be seen. She has more yellow around the eyes towards her beak. As well her beak seems more yellow than Ivy's...perhaps a breeding time thing ?? Perhaps Tracy could fill us in on that.
I'm only able to see this after looking at photos.
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/image/111408388
TPC is a "Pro" and can tell at a glance it seems.
-
Fabulous pictures, as always, Dennis!
-
I especially like the ones where they look like they are dropping off the railing. Beautiful.
-
Stunnign captures of the Western Pair. Keep up the great work Dennis, from one photographer to another :)
-
Great shots Dennis...I love the ones where the falcon is "dropping" off the railing. They truly are magnificent!
Any word or idea who the intruder was?? Hopefully just a falcon passing through and only made Winnipeg a rest spot.
-
Peregrines pass by here all the time on their way to the marshes and lakes north and west of here - very popular places with non-breeding (too young, too old or no mate yet) birds. Hang out at Oak Hammock Marsh in a couple of months and you will probably see a peregrine there on any given day - sometimes even "ours". T-Rex, Trey's Dad, was seen out there quite frequently during the breeding season - off shopping for the incubating Madame ...
As for the interloper, haven't had any reports of injured/dead peregrines recently and haven't had any other sightings. If we do, no worries, I'll post them!
-
Just went and checked my dates, Hurricane was spotted at the Smiley Tower in Grand Forks on April 8th and that was the only day they saw him. Dennis and I saw the interloper buzz through on the 12th but it was the same size as our new female so I don't think it was Hurricane. But the timing could have worked ....
I will of course let you all know what/if anything I hear about either the interloper (probably just a tourist) and Hurricane.
-
I am glad to hear about this pair of peregrines.........Watch out pigeons
-
Okay, I have decided (unilaterally) on a name for the female in West Winnipeg. The name follows the usual convoluted logic that usually applies to names of our birds.
Female has a one ring band rather than the kind of bands we put on the chicks, its the kind of band I have only ever seen used by breeders or by falconers, so it could be that she decided she wanted the wide open skies more than she wanted guaranteed food and shelter. In any case, unless we can get a very up-close (< 12 inches) look at her band
AND if the band has markings, we won't be able to tell who she is or when/where she came from.
So, here is the stream of consciousness that named our newest female ...
... ring-band -- ring -- diamond ring - diamond - gem - gem is too cute name for carnivorous peregrine -- (back one step) -- diamond -- jewel -- jewel also too cute name a name for screaming, whacking, protective mama bird -- (back one step) -- diamond -- ruby -- emerald -- (way too cute names, back stepping again) -- diamond -- jewel (again) -- Jewel & Ivy -- (good rhythm) -- Ivy & Jewel -- (female bird has boat loads of personality from what I've seen so far, needs a good name) -- Jewel -- (still can't twitch when I type name) -- Jewel -- (spelling change like Trey and Ivy's names perhaps?) -- Jewel -- Julie -- (ack, 'nuff said) -- Jewel -- Jule -- (better) -- Ivy & Jule -- (not there yet, still too cute) -- Ivy & Jules -- (like that) ... Jules & Ivy .. (works that way too) ...
Ladies, Gentlemen & Phanatics ... I am pleased to introduce our newest, hopefully soon to be nesting in West Winnipeg, peregrine pair ... Ivy and Jules.
And if we do manage to find out who she is/was in her previous life, we can give her a hyphenated name or she can be "Jules, the peregrine formerly known as <insert former incarnation's name here>". Seems to me though that if she was a breeding or falconry bird, this may be a new life or the resumption of a previous life, both of which are deserving of a "new" name.
-
:o - WOW TPC! - your creative process is fascinating! - Ivy & Jules- excellent!! ;D
-
Great explanation of our newly named West Winnipeg pair... Ivy & Jules.
Hmmmm..I wonder what streams of consciousness or convoluted logic will come if Ivy & Jules have chicks to be named? ;) & :-*
-
And the maestro should take a bow - I'm in awe of your thought process TPC
-
Wow !!!
where were you when I was naming my girls :) :)
-
Good choice, TPC. :)
-
Love the name, excellant choice TPC. Here's to Ivy&Jules!
-
Jules is a great name.
You are so right, TPC. Murder and violence aren't pretty, let alone cute!
-
"Jules is a remorseless professional killer and is capable of psychologically tormenting a victim before "popping a cap in his "
From Pulp Fiction.
;D
-
Okay, my psychic skills may have been working in overdrive on this name ... never saw pulp fiction but that is as perfect description of an adult peregrine during banding if ever there was one ... :o
-
ok I just had a vision of a peregrine with an afro. :o
-

Loriann, had a lousy day but you suceeded in making me laugh out loud - thanks toots.

;D

Just so y'all know, saw a peregrine on the way home perched on top of a building (north east of it actually) just enjoying the sun.
-
So glad to hear that, allikat!
-
This comes under the heading of - just when you are not looking for them - I saw Ivy this afternoon. I was out shopping and saw a very familiar looking building (thanks Dennis) with what looked like a stuffed animal on a balcony rail midway up. I had my binoculars in my backpack and whoa, there was the little rockstar himself looking every bit as handsome as his dad. He was probably either having a midafternoon siesta or else watching for a pigeon to come by. There is a plentiful supply in the neighbourhood. I didn't hang around even though I was in a public parking lot, because it seemed a little like invasion of privacy, for the people there I mean. It is different for the Project people to be documenting them. I am sure that Ivy and Jules don't care, afterall they were doing the wild thing in one of the most public locations in the city. :D
Great name by the way Tracy. And yes, I had the wrong set of buildings the other week although they fit the criteria, plus falcons had visited in the past and a falcon did fly by when I was in the vicinity. C'est la vie. :D

Once you know where to look...they are easy to spot. Well of course if they are around ::)
On my way home today, I thought I saw a falcon trying to hunt a sea gull. There was some pretty fancy flying happening and some stooping. All I saw was a falcon and lots of gulls scatter 8)
Don't worry...I decided to pull into a parking lot to watch all of this unfold :P
-
I saw Ivy this afternoon.

I envy you both! It's harder in downtown Wpg, when you don't have a window seat OR co-workers who get it (remember after Black Friday, those who thought we were nuts for sobbing at our desks?).
I am SO glad you have free access! :)
-
Get them hooked this year Liz and then they'll understand!

Oh, they like gull, some birds more than others and some nestsites more than others. At the Radisson we get more shorebird remains, same at the Diner in West Winnipeg. At the U of M however, we were hip deep in gull parts when the birds nested there - it was just a couple of minutes from the bend in the Red by St Norbert where the gulls congregate so they were like the pigeons downtown. When we had birds hanging out more regularly on the Legislature, we used to find, almost exclusively, the wings from blue and green winged teal (a smallish duck).
Glad to hear you pulled over Allikat!! :D

Hi Liz. If you'd like you could come over to my building I'll take you up on the roof. I have a pretty good view of 3 or 4 of the places they like to hang out. And I have binoculars so you could get a close up view.
-
Might have to arrange the next Phanatics Get-Together on B's rooftop ... I know Dennis is itching to get back up there!! :D
-
Name the time TPC, I certainly have the place. And it's not your average rooftop with guck all over the place, we have a nice bouncy type flooring, picnic tables, garden and I'm working on a bbq.
-
I sure hope I can make the Phanatics get together this year. Would love to meet the other Phanatics here. Would love to see a Peregrine in real life.
-

Geez! - I wanna work at your building!!! :P
-
Moonstar, I also would love to see a peregrine in real life.
I'm fortunate enough to see bald eagles regularly, though.
-
It's a great building Ballywing. We just moved here a little over 2 years ago and they gutted and redid the place to our specs. Till the new Hydro came along, we had the greenest one in Wpg. Even our water is collected from rain and then filtered and used throughout the building.
The neighbourhood can be a little rough, but everything is a tradeoff.
-
Our 'tower' birds here in mississauga at the St Lawrence plant live on seagulls ( being right beside Lake Ontario). the guy who i talk to there told me that they are forever wiping seagull heads off their cars ( must not taste good.. or too crunchy) and finding corpses in the lots under the silos. (yum)..
-
Bcbird
Where are you in BC.
I go to the eagle fledges.
they are my nest love .
Very majestic..
-
I'm in the Okanagan Valley, where we have a few eagles. My Sister in law lives in Courtenay waterside and the eagles are gloriously everywhere!
Still, though, I'd love to see a peregrine.
-
I'm all for a Phanatics get-to-gether on B's rooftop. I had to miss the gathering last year and was so sorry I did. How many can you host up there?! ;)
-
Saw Ivy and Jules again today...I'm so lucky that I get to see both pairs to and from work.
Not sure who was perched on the North East corner of the building this afternoon, but someone was out hunting again....falcon doing fancy flying and stooping gulls again! Oh and yes, I parked in a nearby parking lot to observe all of the excitement! 8)

it's making me mental ... is west winnipeg down portage ... or charleswood?

A few more West Winnipeg photos have been added.

Could be anywhere between the Hydro Building (two blocks west of the Radisson) and Headingley .. and north/south to the Perimeter Highway. And no, not going to be more specific. Don't fret about the exact location folks - build a territory in your mind with three locations in it - The Diner, The Bleachers and The B&B. Most folks online aren't in Winnipeg so this is exactly how they are envisioning our discussions of the Radisson territory downtown. And keep in mind that the peregrines' environment doesn't look like our environment even though they occupy the same footprint. So create the territory in your head and then add detail as the peregrines' story unfolds and as we are able to get decent photos. Since peregrines aren't that easy to see even when you know where they are/will be, this may in fact be a much more fulfilling way of following along on their adventures.
-
Should have been a bit more specific about the roof. I only have access during working hours. The powers that be are of the xy species and even though the xx are first in and last out, only the xy have the alarm codes. >:(
Bit of an OB network here.
-
Since peregrines aren't that easy to see even when you know where they are/will be....
You said it TPC!! - I've finally figured out where they are (pretty much) and have yet to see hide nor hair of any of them - even P&T have completely eluded my neck craning - so far!!! >:(
-
Rockstar Junior was on The Bleachers this morning about 7:45 am. Couldn't see Jules anywhere so hopefully she was off doing "lady" things ;) in the nestbox. Will check the box on the weekend and let you all know if we have gotten lucky yet ....
-
these guys certainly keep you busy TPC
-
Labour of love - well mostly love, some stress, a bit of annoyance, few frustrations and the occasional "I'll wring your bloody neck". ;D
-

Ah..that's where he was. I looked for them but didn't see either one. I'll keep my eyes open on the way home...I wonder if I'll get lucky 3 days in a row watching falcons hunt seagulls 8)
-
Your pictures are beautiful Dennis. Thank you for sharing them. I would like to see some pictures of you taking these amazing pictures!
-

I have a few of those I believe, I'll make sure I add them to my list for loading to the photo gallery this weekend!
Also, at 1715hrs, both Jules and Ivy were very placidly roosting on The Bleachers. And yes Dennis, the same bleacher!! Sorry gang, won't get more specific :D
-
Saw a window-cleaner on The Diner but no birds - and didn't see them on the Bleachers either so may just have been I caught them during a run to the market for lunch or they might have been "getting busy" at the B&B. Will definitely be going by tomorrow for a peak at the nestsite ...
-
... ??? - I know the B&B - and I know the Bleachers - but the Diner has me flummoxed. :P - will keep puzzling over it.
-
Actually if the Diner isn't a people diner but only a bird diner then I know it. Not that it does a dang bit of good, I never see any Peregrines - anywhere - ever! ::)
-
I'm with you Ballywing. Have all three figured out but darned if I've seen a bird there yet. Allicat seems to have a lot of luck spotting them, maybe we should han out with her :)
-
Awe..
Okay you two, I don't see them all the time :D
In the mornings, it just happens to be the right time when I'm driving by ;)
I always pull over in the late afternoon/evening IF I see them hunting.
-
Well then, next time I'm in the area, I'll have to make sure it's around 4 - 6 pm.
Gotta be something that I need to buy.
-
Between 4 & 7 pm is a pretty good time...just look at the usual spots. If you happen to see a lot of sea gulls around..or scattering around, you just might see falcon doing some fancy flying trying to catch lunch/dinner.
Not sure if you can go down in the morning hours, but I always seem to luck out! I pass by around 7:30am and there is usually one perched on the building or the sign of the building!
Don't worry bccs...at the right time, you'll see one or both and you won't want to leave :)
-
Hey Allicat, thanks for the tips :D. Morning is out as I start work verrrrry early. But tomorrow is Sunday and I just might take a little drive.
As for leaving, sometimes I never want to leave work ( oh what in god's name is wrong with me ? ::) ;D
It the kids are out, I just want to stay a lot longer.
-
Please tell me you're staying at work later because you're watching the falcon cams or posting on the forum ;)
-
Oh good lord yes, It certainly is not dedication to the job. That insanity left last year..
And 5 more and I can retire. Yahoo, more time for volunteer work ;D
-
I guess that's my problem - I go by there around 11am, then again around 6:30pm or 9:30pm - no wonder I never see anything. :-\
-

The more falcon spotters, the better...more volunteers with towels, sweatshirts or jackets when "fledge watch" is on, the better!
-

Well now that you know, hopefully you'll be able to see them at work or just hanging around.
-
ok, I asked tpc about fledge watch and what I should do if... She's pretty busy right now, but your reference to towels, jackets etc. seem like a good idea. I'm there early 5:30 to 6:oo am, so any tips you could give me would be great.
-
I'll leave the professional tips up to TPC...
I unfortunately drive through to get to work. Then I'm not back through again until 445-5pm. So maybe will any luck, the chicks won't decide to fledge until the evening or the weekends. (and the same goes for Princess and Trey's chicks) ;)
I know what y'all are thinkin', I've already decided that there will be chicks and that they will fledge ::)
Keeping positive and I still believe it's going to be a GREAT YEAR for the peregrine falcons!
-
of course there will be chicks, of course they willl fledge and of course they will come back to procreate here.
And all of us lunatics will be here to document it :D
-
did they install a nest box for the newlyweds?
-
I'm not sure what these two have got...I was going to ask TPC about that.
I also wanted to ask her how man nestbox's we have in the city...
-
Old Bird weighing in here. It's probably best if the conversation about where The Diner, etc is, was kept to PMs. I'm pretty sure TPC would prefer if not too many people know where. jmo :) :)
-
The more falcon spotters, the better...more volunteers with towels, sweatshirts or jackets when "fledge watch" is on, the better!
OOOPS!
For a second I had a vision of the volunteers wearing jackets and sweatshirts with Fledge Watch written on them. Then I reread the comment and understood. Might be a cool idea, though probably not in the neighbour hood where the nest is a secret!
-
New photos have been added from yesterday.
-
Wonderful photos as usual Dennis. They are so clear and show so much detail. Thanks. I think I have figured out were the West Pair are. I need to make time to go there find a place to park and watch. Hopefully I will finally see a Peregrine in real life.

No where near the west, I'm talking downtown. And you could sport almost any type of clothing and nobody would bat an eye.
The west is safe from publicity. Up to Tracy to spill the beans on that location :-X :-X
-
Sorry, little busy yesterday, couldn't get online at all, so I'll try to answer questions that have come up recently ....
First is, if you have or think you have figured out where the West Winnipeg birds are, keep it to yourself - that includes on posts, private messages and emails. The last I know I have no control over, but my not naming the location has nothing whatsoever with making this a contest or a game. I chose names that were descriptive of the structures' purpose for the peregrines so that it would help you all to develop a mental image of this pair's life and activities. You are all so familiar with Trey & Princess' life that with photos and reports, I hope to be able to keep you all up to date on the pair's activities even though I can't bring them to you via webcam or take you all for a guided tour. It is a question of the birds' security and the privacy of the occupants of all the buildings/structures involved. I'm not saying all this to be mean to those of you who haven't or won't get the opportunity to see the WW birds, I wish I could share everything as we have done at the Radisson but every location has its own set of circumstances and until/if the situation changes, this is the way we are handling the WW peregrines. Keep in mind that I could have been even less accommodating about where this pair, and I am very good at keeping some things off the radar until/unless necessary and only then if it is in the best interest of the birds.
Now having read the riot act, I will let you know that I will see what I can do about making the site more public but that part isn't my decision. Depending on what we can do, we may be able to bring you some video of the birds nesting etc on a regular basis but we are working on that and it is by no means a certainty. Heck we don't even know if/where they are going to nest yet so we are getting ahead of ourselves here.
did they install a nest box for the newlyweds?
There is a nestbox on the best structure in the area (The B&B) and they have made a scrape in it which is promising, but no guarantee as we have seen at the Radisson over the last 2 years! They have been hanging out alot on The Bleachers and The Diner but neither of those locations are optimal for nesting so we don't have boxes there. Depending on them this year, that may change however ... we will just have to see ...
ok, I asked tpc about fledge watch and what I should do if... She's pretty busy right now, but your reference to towels, jackets etc. seem like a good idea. I'm there early 5:30 to 6:oo am, so any tips you could give me would be great.
We don't even have eggs yet so I don't tempt fate talking about fledging which won't happen until the end of July or early August ... but when we get to banding (~ 3 weeks after hatching - so if they laid today, 7-8 weeks from now) we can really get rolling on plans ... and yes, they can include "gear" ;)
I also wanted to ask her how man nestbox's we have in the city...
We had more, only a couple now as we are in the process of replacing them at the moment. Costs money and the buildings in a territory change (new buildings, additions, etc) so when our boxes got "old" they were removed and we are updating them. Box locations aren't random, they need to have certain conditions and support the core (nest area) of the pair's territory - we don't want nests that are too far away to be considered by a pair but which might attract an additional pair in which case we are encouraging the potential for territorial disputes. I have one more territory in the City I'm working on this year. It hasn't been visited in 10 years, but as more of our young birds are returning maybe we can get a bit ahead of the next return. More on that as we go along ...
-
Just off topic for a second. have you ever considered those high rises along the river by the Henderson highway.
certainly the height and the prey.
-
Yes we have, but they seem to be in the Radisson territory boundaries ...
-

No no..the open invitation, so to speak, fledge watch was for our downtown pair. I respect the fact the WW's location is secret.
-
It's amazing actually..last year, I saw a peregrine flying toward the "Kildonan" area. I was on the bridge going downtown and he/she was going the other way, perhaps dinner :D
-
0800 hrs - no one was around at the Diner or the Bleachers. Hopefully they are at The B&B working on the next generation, its about that time (just). It was also 2nd breakfast time to perhaps they were off getting take-out.
-
that is a wide territory isn't it, that theRAdisson pair has.
Hope this pair has some eggs soon
-
For our non-Winnipeg viewers, Winnipeg isn't that big in actual fact. From every nestsite used in this City, you can see the other sites without optical assistance in fact. There is a building, not quite in the middle of the city that I might be able to get a 360 degree panoramic view of this year ... that might give folks a better sense of the size of the city and how big/not big the territories actually are ...
.. may have to talk to Dennis ....
-
Ooooh yes, do talk to Dennis TPC, the more stuff to 'SEE' the better!!!! ;D
-
I get the picture.
-
And we would like the picture please.
-
picture would be nice...or should I say great.
-
Methinks it's that new building ...
-
;) & :-X
-
thanks Tracy for your answers .
-
I hope the WW pair has eggs as well this year. That would be wonderful for us to have the knowledge of two families of falcons in Winnipeg. Come on Jules and Ivy! Nest with Success!
-
TOTALLY, allikat! Feathers and talons crossed for these two this year. :)
I meant the bldg with the 360 view, not the WW site.
-
0800 hrs (local) - both Jules & Ivy are on the bleachers again - they like to go hunting from there and it was 2nd breakfast time (first breakfast is about 6 am at this time of the year).
Since both are still around, they may not quite yet be ready to lay. Will see if I can't make the 'rounds in the next day or two to see if we have any good news to report ... one location may have to wait until the weekend though ...
-
1130 hrs (local) - Dennis was passing by the Bleachers and spotted who he thought was Jules but no Ivy. He has photos and will be processing them this evening so he askes that we don't quote him on the identity until he has had a chance to check the images.
On this same subject, Dennis and I are working to figure out the quick and easy field mark differences between Jules and Ivy so that they are easier to identify at a distance or from any angle. When we have it worked out, I will post images on the portrait gallery with the differences identified below. Ivy has changed some since we saw him last year and the year before, he looks much more like his Dad (hallelujah!)
-
Ivy has changed some since we saw him last year and the year before, he looks much more like his Dad (hallelujah!)
;D - So cute TPC, head of the 'I ADORE TREY' fanclub - his highness definitely deserves the worshipping, though he needs to be a bit (actually alot) more assertive in steering his spouse to the proper nesting site! :P
-
..............ok.......no more dwelling on that. :-[
-
Ha, dwelling, nice pun Ballywing! :D
-
;D
-
TPC assumes I had my camera when I was checking on the locations today. Well, she was "Correct" again ! She is beginning to read me better than my wife...lol
-
Dennis & I swung past all the usual haunts and Jules and Ivy are being annoying and hanging out where it doesn't appear to be conducive nesting but also don't yet appear to be nesting. We'll be do box checks in the next couple of days and hopefully by then we will have an egg somewhere!!!
-
I haven't seen them at all for last couple of days...so maybe, just maybe they are wanting to nest soon somewhere?
-
Hopefully we will find eggs for them in the next week - that would seem to be about the schedule. Even if we don't we will keep looking until its well past the time for eggs. Over the last couple of days, I have mostly just seen 1 bird at a time, which might indicate that calm before incubating but until we find eggs, its all supposition. This pair last year never did produce eggs, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that perhaps the female was just a bit too young last year. Wait and see, wait and see .... (my new mantra ::))
-
arar. Wait and see, wait and see .... (my new mantra ::))
OHMMMMM, OHMMMM ::) mouth tucked behind the fist giggling.

Spectacular photos Dennis. ;D Thanks

Running out of words to describe your shots - utterly fantastic!!!
-
Great shots!! Wish that was my balcony they were perched on :P
-
Great sots. Is there a way to make them bigger or am I missing something

Just click on the first one Bev, it enlarges -then you can see the rest by clicking on 'next' ;D

It still does not work for me. Never has. Frustrated here.!!!!
-
From the Peregrine Chick - I will shortly be scooping up all "how do I" comments from the Observation threads and putting them in the "How do I" thread on the Forum Board.
It still does not work for me. Never has. Frustrated here.!!!!
Dennis & I pay for space on pbase for our photos so mostly they are recompressed to save space and are about 600 x 400 pixels. If you open one of the photos, under it there will be the photo's date & the photographer's name, then the title and description below that, then "other sizes: small, medium, large*, original". On my gallery, whatever size is in white is the size you are looking at - if there are larger sizes (in gold on my gallery) click on them to see a larger image.
If you are still having problems Bev, do a screen print of our screen at the point where you can't get the photos any larger and email it to me and I can tell you whether you are seeing the full-sized photo or not.
* the large may be missing if the original photo is less than pbase's pre-defined dimensions for "large"

my husband helped me tonight and I think I have it. thanks :) :)

Love the goose in the planter!!!

I didn't know you had to plant 'goose' to get more 'goose'..

That's a western secret now exposed.

Wait till you see the goslings ;D ;D

Going to have to do alot of cleaning in this thread this weekend ... ::)
-
Lot's of cleaning? Who let the King of Turds in here, anyway?
-
As I passed through on my way home from work today both Jules and Ivy were on the Bleachers. I really hope they are just enjoying the view prior to moving their egg-laying operations to the B&B. I will be checking some sites on Saturday, maybe the Bleachers too. Since both birds were visible and obviously not incubating today, it is possbile they haven't started on eggs yet ...
-
I'm happy that you saw them today TPC..I haven't seen them on my way to and from work for the last couple of days. I was hoping that maybe they were incubating some eggs...but I guess not.
-
Perhaps it's the "Curly Locks"...perhaps the "Beaming Smile"...perhaps "The B-Nocks"...TPC and I checked out the West-end birds today. I seemed to do the checking and TPC seemed to do the chatting..."PR" work is what I'm thinking. Sorry...inside joke...))
I'm sure Tracy will be doing a West-end update shortly. Heads-up as photos from today will be uploaded starting Monday.
-

??? ??? ???

Looking forward to some more photos Dennis...can't get enough of them 8)

Dennis and I chased the little darlings around West Winnipeg for more than a couple of hours yesterday. They weren't in any the spots we expected and in all spots we had hoped against. The Winnipeg peregrines (all of them) owe me big time this year. On Friday both birds were together so we knew they hadn't started incubating but perhaps they had started laying. On Saturday, we watched and watched and watched, in part because the watching was so good, cool but not fridgid (nice change), breeze not windy (nice change), sunny not overcast (very nice change for Dennis) and with clear sight lines (very nice for all of us). Jules really is one of the prettier females we have had in the province. Anywho, Ivy came through briefly before bombing off to who knows where to kill who knows what - no other reason for that kind of departure. And Jules stopped, dropped and rolled out of sight and was gone until after we left. Sooooo, it looks like she's at the very least laying, perhaps starting to incubate. That puts the West Winnipeg birds 10 days/2 weeks behind the Radisson birds as a guestimate. Now we have to get access to the site, confirm a nest, scope out access & options then plan, plan, plan.
We will of course keep you all updated and if we go public with the location, you all will be the first to hear. And I'll be adding some of Dennis' photos to our gallery along with an ID guide as soon as I can.
-
Perhaps it's the "Curly Locks"...perhaps the "Beaming Smile"...perhaps "The B-Nocks"...
??? ??? ???
We were outside for a long time, I think the fresh, spring air got to Dennis ;) I think he's playing around with how beautiful our (we believe) egg-laying/starting to incubate (aka bird equivalent of pregnant) Jules was yesterday. As I said, spring air ;D
-
Come on Jules and Ivy...nest in the west! :D
-
Perhaps it's the "Curly Locks"...perhaps the "Beaming Smile"...perhaps "The B-Nocks"...
??? ??? ???
My thought exactly, ballywing. The thing about inside jokes, they only work on the people on the inside and in this case, it seems there's only two out of 200! lol
-
FINALLY!!!!!
Today on my way home, got a great look of a falcon soaring around his/her domain. It was a beautiful site!
Wow, these birds are beautiful and graceful!
-
That's good to hear, especially for those of us not in the area!
-
I just hope that TPC has some news on whether or not this pair is nesting!!!
-
;)
-
Oh Dennis...you're such a teaser!
-
New photos added for the West-end Birds.
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/west_wpg_peregrines
-
Once again Dennis...great photos!
I envy the people that live in that building. I couldn't imagine what I would do, actually I would stare and watch in awe, if the peregrines were mating a couple of feet in front my me. What an opportunity to watch wildlife happen right in front of your eyes and not on a webcam!
-
Okay, I'm a bit late with this, meant to post today but didn't have computer access until now. Here's the latest ... Jules and Ivy are nesting not anywhere we wanted them to. But they are in the drivers' seats and they have chosen a less than perfect location. Not a problem for us like Trey's & Princess' location, just not ideal for incubating eggs/brooding young chicks. But they have three eggs as of yesterday and so far, so good. They are out of the weather so no worries there.
We are planning to help the birds out a bit with their nest so hopefully that will improve their odds of hatching out their eggs. We don't have all the details worked out yet, these things take time to organize but I will let you know what we plan to do and how it goes, no worries. Photos too as we have them.
Last note - we officially will NOT be publicizing the location of this nestsite. This is primarily to ensure the safety of the peregrines and their chicks. As I mentionned, this is not an ideal nest location and we don't intend to make it any more difficult for the peregrines. We will make every effort to provide you all with updates and photos but this is as much as we can do this year.

I hope you are able to do what you can for them for their nesting safety.
that is great . 3 eggs :) :)
I think you are going to be able to eat all the sundaes you want this summer as you will be running like H--- ;D ;D
I for one totally understand why you would not want to publicize their location.
-
I should also mention that the building's owners & management have requested that we not publicize the location of the pair for the birds' security and the building's. They are very excited about the birds and want to make sure they are safe. So all is well so far, just not "advertised".
-
that is great that buildings owners and management are excited about having the falcons there. that is one step in the right direction. :)h
-
So excited and happy :D that there are 3 eggs here. Hopefully all goes well and no one disturbs them.
-
Excellent news about our WW pair and their 3 eggs. WOO HOO!!
It's also wonderful that the management is excited as well. Very happy to hear that!
Hope you can work your magic TPC to help Jules and Ivy out... :-*
-
Oooh, three eggs -- how exciting! ;D ;D Go Jules and Ivy!
-
And not a peep from any of us to disturb, annoy or reveal any location ideas. :-X :-X
-
Absolutely :-X
-
(don't even bring it up)
-
Bring what up ??? ;) - 3 Eggs - Super!!!! - Between P&T and all their descendants, we'll have Soooooo many chicks to keep track of this year!! ;D
-
A number of New Photos have been added in the West-end gallery.

Cheers !
-
I never thought of investigating this site!!!! 3 eggs that is good and if you can help that would be even better. How long has the pair been together?? What are the ages?
-
Dennis...your photos are so incredible! Love the action shots! How do you do that? They are perfect!
-
...don't tell anyone. TPC stands next to me and "SHOUTS"..."NOW" !!
Couldn't do it with out her... ;D
Cheers !

oh right!

LOL Dennis! ;D

Couldn't do it with out her... ;D
That's not why I'm shouting Dennis ;D Actually Dennis wanders off and I keep wondering what the heck he's up to then he wanders back with his camera around his neck and a little smile on his face. Then some time between 24-48 hours later I find a little CD in my mailbox ...
-
...shift change in the Westend at 9:20 this fine "Snowy" morning in Winterpegg.
Cheers !

A few more photos have been posted of the West-end birds.

-
Working on how I can view your pictures. :) :)
would love to see them
-
Love those photos. 8) I have to say though Dennis that Jules has certainly been keeping an eye on you in the recent ones, especially that series where she is all fluffed up. Come chick time she may be regarding you as a suspicious character :D
-
How long has the pair been together??
Mother Hen, the male is 'Ivy' - the son of P&T!!! ;D - other questions can be answered by TPC, or others who retain information better than I do! :P
-
Photos are great Dennis. Wow, can you ever see the difference in size between the two of them. Gorgeous birds.
-
I never thought of investigating this site!!!! 3 eggs that is good and if you can help that would be even better. How long has the pair been together?? What are the ages?
Sorry Mother Hen, missed your question ... Ivy is a 2005 hatch of Trey and Princess at the Radisson. He wasn't seen anywhere in 2006 but then returned in 2007 and nested (unsuccessfully - 3 eggs) with Lucy his sister (same year) in the West Winnipeg area. In 2008, he was back again but with a new female, Jules, but they didn't initiate nesting just hung out in the same territory all summer. This year Ivy and Jules are back again and they have 3 eggs as of last Monday. Estimated hatch date is the end of May. We are going to try to improve their site a bit in the next week as their current site doesn't make incubation easy for them. But more on that after its done ;D
-
A number of new photos have been added.

-
0800 hrs (local) - both Ivy and Jules were sitting on the railing by the nest. Hopefully this is just shift-change behaviour because they need to be seriously sitting on these eggs at this point. They can't keep hopping on and off or their eggs are going to bake. I'm hoping its just because its morning and activity and that they get back on the eggs for the day. That shouldn't hurt the eggs. Will keep you all up-to-date.
-
Ack!! - Somebody needs to give these first time parents a set of instructions maybe ???
-
Someone needs crazy glue them to their eggs ::)
Just kidding, they could rotate them to incubate them properly if I did that. Do have the urge to do it, let me tell you!!!
-
I'm wondering....did these two crazies get down to incubating today? Not sure how your observing this.
-
Not sure.
There have nested in a covered spot (I believe that's correct), but I think kinda forgot that they needed to be able to easily incubate their clutch..don't think that happened. TPC has somethin' up her wing :P
-
These little dipsticks have chosen a location where they are easily spooked - they are both very quiet birds (that may change if they manage to hatch their eggs) and Jules is much more skittish than Ivy. He's more willing/able to stick it out. They would have started to incubate with egg number three they just aren't as stick-to-it as Trey and Princess. Not unusual for young/inexperienced parents and yes, we have plans to perhaps help them out a bit this week. Not sure that it will work but its at least an idea that might make it easier for them to do get into the groove. Since Dennis will be there, you can be sure there will be photos :D
-
This is shaping up to be a very exciting week TPC!
-
How come all these little 'Dipsticks' like to choose the tricky, challenging, less than ideal locations for nesting? ??? - Just to drive us bananas I guess! :-\
-
A few more photos have been added.

I have no idea Ballywing, I think its just to make up for our abbreviated year last year. Still don't know what the Brandon birds are doing - last week they hadn't shown signs of settling down yet but our man in Brandon will get back to me when he has news. As for the WW birds, no idea, even they should know that their current location is not ideal. As for Trey & Princess, I think its because they think I need some excitement in my life - using the penthouse condo would have been way to easy ::)
-
hopefully your plan will help them out here Tracy. I know last year Radisson did not incubate right away.(being her first year) But our experienced male took over and then she came around very nicely. this year a different story. both doing well.
-
Don't know where the apartment block is but have they actually laid their eggs on the balcony there?
-
We have agreed to the building owners'/management's request not to publicize the location for privacy reasons, so I'm afraid we won't be posting the location details for this pair this year LinderLou. We will however be keeping everyone informed here on the forum and photos when we have them.
The Peregrine Chick
-
Tks for reply. Was just worried. Would never endangered the birds.
-
Are they at all protected from this horrid weather TPC? :-\
-
They face west but are tucked in pretty deep in a corner so they might well be wet from rain blown in by the wind. But to answer your question, yes they are protected, they have an overhang and aren't near an edge.
-
Hope all is okay with Jules and Ivy...I know TPC will keep us posted! 8)
-
As she said, they're in a covered place. Don't stress! :)
-
We are planning to visit Jules & Ivy on the weekend so can tell you how they are doing then. From the ground all looks normal, but can't really tell until we get back onto the balcony.
And yes, Dennis will be there and we both will have cameras. Can't guarantee spectacular photos but we will try!
-
A few more photos have been added. Sorry to say that I'm starting to run low on new photos to post...perhaps this week-end.

So, somewhere in West Winnipeg, I was doing errands and noticed a crow flying towards a high rise building (not the nestsite building) and then heard that distinctive kaking (sp?) sound. I looked up in time to see a falcon launch from the top of the building and dive at the crow. Another crow joined in and after some low flying aerial acrobatics over a road they all disappeared behind some trees. A minute later the peregrine reappeared flying up to the top of the building and sitting where it could do a little preening in the afternoon sun. So, crows seen off, territory successfully defended. A very good afternoon. Don't know what the drivers thought though as this unfolded in front of them. :o A bit of a driving distraction I would think. ;D ;D ;D
-
So, somewhere in West Winnipeg, I was doing errands and noticed a crow flying towards a high rise building ...
even more distracting had what I first read been correct. I read "noticed a cow flying towards" ... ::)
you guys did say it had been windy, though.
-
LOL ;D ;D ;D
-
we have cows .... anyone watch twister?
-
that was what I thought of!
I wonder what a peregrine would think if a cow came flying by? :o
-
Okay, think we have wandered far enough into left field ::)... shoo doggies, back to the barn ....
-
Okay, think we have wandered far enough into left field ::)... shoo doggies, back to the barn ....
shoo doggies, O.K. but a little confused here. As this has been actually a conversation relate to Peregrines. What has all of the other stuff about hockey and cheese and who knows what been about? Can't think that it has been related. Looking forward to that reply.
-
Sorry for the inconvenience of you having to wade through our occasional misplaced silliness, MaggieBlue.
As the author of the hockey and cheese threads, I did start them in the members only section. Sometimes though, we might get a bit excited and refer to those members only comments while in the general forum area.
When you login and go through all the unread threads, it might seem that there is too much non peregrine chatter, but most of it is actually in members only sections. TPC usually starts a members only thread and shovels the comments out of the bird related sections.
Hope that kind of explains what happened here.
-
I blame it on the fact that we're a little kooky :P
-
oy! I brought it back to a peregrine discussion. a weird one, to be sure, but peregrine related. :P
-
LOL
-
TPC will delegate the cows where they belong, with the cats, flying hamsters & squirrels I presume. :P :P - Back to proper subject , can't wait to hear of Jules & Ivy's status and see some pics!! ;D
-
Sorry for the inconvenience of you having to wade through our occasional misplaced silliness, MaggieBlue.
Me too, maggieblue! :)
Some Phanatics have been on-line for quite a while, waiting for something to happen. The conversation gets a bit twisted sometimes, as the fingers tap faster and faster on the desk, waiting for eggs.. a pip.. a chick.. the other chicks... etc. No doubt you remember that from last year! ;D
-
O.K. So I was just kidding. That didn't go well did it? The waiting is getting to me too. ::)
-
LOl - no worries. We just need to get back in sync with your sense of humour! ;D
-
back in sync?? You two have been going back and forth on many threads...and it's been quite enjoyable!
You two are hysterical!
Okay back to the WW birds..wonder how they are doing?
-
Okay back to the WW birds..wonder how they are doing?
So far as we know, doing okay. We don't have "eyes" on this nest but their behaviour, when we can see it, looks right. We hope to go by and get a look at the birds/nest from the building on the weekend, but have to get that confirmed at this point.
-
Oh, and thank you Allikat for steering the conversation back on topic :-*
-
Good to hear that it is...so far so good!
Oh and ;)

Any news on Ivy and Jules? I would love to hear how things are going.

We are going to take a run past the West Winnipeg site tomorrow Dennis and I - hopefully that will more photos and tales to tell ....
-
cheez, everytime I open that page I see mating photos. blush!
-
Well Liz if you'd rather seeing other birds mating go to my flickr page, it has a pair of mating tree swallows lmao
-
Who's that in the red jacket with the binocs? ;)
I am SO envious of whoever's balconey they feel so comfortable on! :( 8)
-
NO!!!! I don't much want to watch any mating whatsoever! I'm not a prude, but I'm not a voyeur either! 8)
-
rotflmao Liz
-
LOL Liz!! :P
-
Thanks, eagle. :) I hope they all! have a cigarette-moment afterwards, but I sure as heck don't want to watch it! ;D ;D
-
Oh my goodness no cigarettes in the forest nope
-
I remember after looking at some of the mating photos, I thought to myself, sheesh...they don't get any privacy do they? ::)
-
yea, but you guys kept lookin, didn't cha ;D :P
-
Yes... :-[
Sorry falcons...
-
As a matter of fact, I skip thru them asap! :-[

We are going to take a run past the West Winnipeg site tomorrow Dennis and I - hopefully that will more photos and tales to tell ....
I'm sure TPC will be posting soon...did show her a couple of photos that I captured. Perhaps it was the wind or the sounds of motors running...think she said "is that the best you got" ;) :P
Cheers !

Dennis got some wonderful photos folks don't let him fool you. And while Dennis was snapping pics, Larry and I were busy installing a nest-tray under the eggs and a camera so that we can check on the eggs/nest-tray without having to access the site every other day - access isn't convenient and we don't want to scare the birds off the nest any more often than we need/needed to.
Anywho, Jules watched us for a little while when we arrived but didn't hop off her eggs to berate us until we actually started to install the camera and the nest-tray I did the box, Larry handled the technology. Jules took to the new tray after checking it out very (very) thoroughly. We also installed a little shield to provide her with a bit more privacy which might help her to not leap off the eggs whenever she gets spooked. We hope this will help her as a first-time mother in a less than ideal peregrine nest site. She got back on her eggs eventually (or it just seemed like eventually) and settled down to incubating.
She's pretty protected from the wind - certainly from the north and east, so that's a help. They are now down to one egg, we found the third egg on the other end of the nest-site ledge with a concave break on one side. Can't tell how long its been "out" but its definitely gone.
Dennis and I have some photos on our cameras, not sure when I will get the first of the cam images, but will post them all when I can.
-
Awe...poor things.
Let's all hope that this one egg Jules and Ivy have hatch! If not...they have a nest tray for next year. Baby steps...and it's an invite for them to nest next year! Positive thinking here folks!
-
So glad you were able to them out Tracy and sorry about the lost egg, I hope they have a successful hatch this year. At least now they may have a better chance and you will be able to monitor them whenever you want without disturbing them.
You guys are great ;D
-
Great work all!
-
one egg sounds like a good way for a new pair to learn stuff, so best of luck! :D
-
Yup, it worked last year for Radisson!
-
Great news on the tray Tracy. to bad about the egg but one is better than none and let us cross our fingers that it hatches .
It is great that you can check things out also. :) :)
-
Sorry folks, obviously I was a little confusing - Jules & Ivy had three eggs, now down to two. The two eggs I transferred to the nest-tray looked fine so we will keep our fingers crossed for them.
Estimated hatch watch start date: June 1 - we think they began hard incubation on the 4th, but the weather has been cold and she's twitchy and at the beginning of incubation jumped off the eggs at the drop of a hat (no, no one is dropping hats on her ;)) just very excitable. She has calmed down now and is sticking better. Question will be if she has spent too much time off the eggs and/or if the cold will slow the hatch down. We will let you know what we see ...
-
Great, thank you. I have to admit that I was really confused and was going to go back through the posts to see how they went from 3 to 1 egg. It would be wonderful if both hatched. And glad that you put up that privacy screen. I really wonder why they have chosen a location with such an incredible number of potential distractions. You must have been ready to tear your hair out over this one. :)
-
You must have been ready to tear your hair out over this one. :)
Nah, just bugged the heck out of Larry & Dennis while we were doing the tech ... Is it ready yet? huh, huh. Can I look at it now? What does this know do? Can we make it bigger? smaller? Purple?
They ignored me nicely ... ;D
-

-
Will be adding to the "West-end Birds" soon...I'm sure TPC wants to get her "claws" on these...lol
These photos come from a different vantage point and this maybe the best location for me ??
Still excited about Trey & Princess on the East Side...don't know how that will unfold...photo wise ?? Nice to know that I have "two" contacts across the street. Thanks GUY'S... :)

Love your sense of Humor TPC.
-
And Eye-spy's!
-
And Eye-Spy our techno-god, doesn't forget anything ... its kinda spooky actually. We'll be doing something, something unexpected arises and techno-god must solve and I think, oops, don't have a widget, but I have some duct tape that might save the day! I offer it to His Excellence and lo and behold, from beneath his copious robes magically appears a widget, and not just any widget, a widget that takes dictation! :o
Truly a techno-god is our Eye-Spy!
I wish I were exaggerating, but I'm not. This happpens everywhere I work with Larry regardless of the situation, whether he's been there before and was able to plan ahead (or not as in the WW case). It's very, very cool. And I'm never expecting it so I get the Eye-Spy equivalent of a smack on the back of the head, aka, a hairy eyeball :P

Yeah, well, I needed a new monitor anyway......
And I was not in that fine a form today as I reacall >:(

hurl, yack, I think Trey has been replaced as # 1 in someone's eyes. Loriann, over to you.......
-
As the current West-end Gallery is getting some what large, with many photos to scroll through. I have decided to make a second gallery. This gallery will be from the nest box installation to banding. I'll be adding a couple of photos daily. Hope you enjoy. Just click on the West Winnipeg...Nest Box-Till Banding gallery.

Don't forget to check in on the recent photo gallery, for other things on the go.

Carefull bunny girl, I'm going to call in the hoe........
-
Listen hear widget guy, the hoe does not exist. We have all talked about her, made jokes about her, been threatened with pictures of her and been told that we should be scared of her powers. Have we seen her? Has anyone been moved by her? Noooooooooo. :P :P :P
-
LOL....uh oh...I'm turning in before the 'hoe' shows up :P
-
LLLMAO!!!!! Wish I'd seen this when it was posted. I notice that no one has posted since then -- apparently everyone is cowering in fear of Heidi or the backhoe. Nice try, bccs! ;D ;D
-
I stand alone against the foe ;D ;D.

** steps away from the HUGE temptations of the last few posts, backs slowly away from the keyboard, giggling madly ** ;D

Loriann, lol but I never thought you'd let this one go without saying something ;D ;D

If you offend the 'chick'
you'll feel her 'stick'
otherwise known as her 'hoe'
out of the sandbox you'll 'go'
if you hear a 'beep beep'
you'll know you are in 'deep'
so you'd better scrape and 'bow'
or you'll feel the 'pow'
both friend and 'foe'
and now you 'know'.
-
And so, here I stand, sword in one hand, taser in the other. I'm a woman of all ages. Alone, alone, just like Joan d'Arc as she stood on the pile of burning wood.
Confident in my righeousness, head held high, thinking only of the welfare of the ww chicks ( had to bring it back to topic somehow ).
-
A few more photos added to the "New" West-end Gallery.
-
Wonderful photos of the west Winnipeg birds as always Dennis. I hope that you weren't hanging off any rooftops at the time! And those recent photos of the owlets, wow, just spectacular. ;D
-
It's likely better that TPC doesn't know just how the photos where obtained... ::) ;)
-
Dennis, absolutely great photos. Are you going to take any of them actually on the eggs?
-
Do to other commitments for the day, I have just loaded some more photos of the West-end Birds...Jules.

-
On my way home today...not sure if it was Jules or Ivy as I don't know the differences between the color of their breast, but I saw this magnificant bird come out of nowhere and he/she flew right over the traffic...approx. 40 ft above. SOOOO 8)
Perhaps it was dinner time :D

I love the shot of Jules where it seems like she's looking right at you, and she probably was. "I see you there, I'm keeping my eye on you!"
Great photos Dennis...they are so clear and it shows how perfect Jules' feathers are in mid flight!
-

My eyes are green! ;D You are SO lucky!
-
Oh Liz...it was wonderful. I've seen them flying around the area... but it's just different when they fly right above you. ;D
-
I've never seen anybody flying anywhere yet!! >:(
-
allikat, I haven't had that experience yet this year. I'm hoping that once P&T's chicks hatch, they'll go back to the antennas on the Radisson. I hope you see it again many times over the summer -- just keep one eye on the road! LOL
-
That's the hard part..keeping focus on the road ::)
I usually pull over to watch...but this was so unexpected :D
(neither one of you have seen P &/or T, fly around downtown?)
-
Nope! And I think ballywing was saying the same thing. I've seen one sitting in a few places, but have yet to see flight at all. I guess I'm just spoiled this year because we're so far ahead. Last year, we were just getting started at this time! I'm sure (hope) that when the eggs hatch, they'll spend more time at the hotel, and then I'll see them.
Oops, didn't mean to change the topic of this thread.
-
Right Liz!! - I go by West Wpg location every day - 'Nothing' - I go by the Radisson at least a couple times/week - 'Nothing' - best I've seen so far is Trey, looking like a flea on the JR sigh, thru Moka's binocs last Friday. - So maybe tomorrow - Fingers crossed!! 8)

I've lost track, when is expected hatch date of the WW pair ?
Donna
-
2-3 weeks from now. We think we know when hard incubation began so there is a bit of a range there .... we have a camera on them so we will be able to let everyone know as soon as it starts ....
-
A few more photos added to the West-End Winnipeg Peregrine gallery.

Sad news, we lost the two remaining eggs at the West Winnipeg site. Not sure what might have happened, we hope that perhaps the digital recorder we had on the camera monitoring the nest might be able to provide us with some information but if it happened at night, I'm afraid we just won't know.
Jules and Ivy are a young pair (we'll we know he is) but they are new together so hopefully having tried, even unsuccessfully this year, they will be more inclined to try it again with each other next year. Its not unusual for unsuccessful pairs to split and try their luck elsewhere with other mates - that's what might have happened between Ivy and Lucy, despite their being siblings. So we will just have to hope that Jules and Ivy stick long enough to be successful, they seem like a good fit as a pair - except for their nest site choices of course.
More on what's next in West Winnipeg later today ...
-
Very sad for them :( I hope that they stay together too. Perhaps after their experiences this year they will choose a better location, preferably one of those deluxe nest boxes.
-
Oh so sorry to hear that Tracy. I hope they stay together and stick around the area as well. Too late for a reclutch attempt?
-
Just wondering, when you say that the eggs were lost, does this mean that they disappeared altogether?
-
No, but have no idea if this pair would even consider it because I don't know what kind of parents they are ... we'll watch for copulation though, that might indicate they are considering another attempt ....
-
Just wondering, when you say that the eggs were lost, does this mean that they disappeared altogether?
Yes, but that's not unusual - one minute there, one minute gone. Hopefully the camera will have caught all or part of what might have happened.
-
Is it possible a human could have done something? Hope not.
-
We don't believe so, the site is very inaccessible and we know who has access and haven't had any concerns so far! So the likelihood of them disappearing into a human pocket, is virtually nil.
-
I'm so sorry to hear this news...I was wondering what was going on as I saw both peregrines at each corner of their local hangout in the early morning hours yesterday and today.
Maybe they will re-nest...if not, hope they hang out until the end of the season and return next year as a pair.
-
I am SO sad to hear this. :'( :'( I hope they give it another shot -- there's still time. And if not, next year. :D
-
So very sorry to hear the bad,sad news on the eggs. Those darn crows destroy eggs all the time even sparrows eggs. There is always a fight outside my house sparros verses sparrow for the sparrow eggs.Too sad,Mother nature! Tough girl to handle
-
Larry (Eye-Spy) is checking out the video and we know who screwed up the angle on our camera - Jules. With a whole ledge to land on, she sat on the camera, even though we put it too low (we thought) for any peregrine to sit on it, before getting up on the "exit" ledge. Means we won't know exactly what happened to the eggs as the cam was perfectly aimed at the nestbox for the last little bit. But we are close enough that we should be able to rule some things in or out.
Keep you all in the loop ...
And Jules and Ivy are fine, they have still been spotted in all their pre-incubating favourite spots ...
-
:'(
-
A few more West-End Winnipeg photos have been added.
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/west_wpg2
-
Thanks for the new photos. A totally different angle than we're used to!
-
Couldn't tell for sure if it was Ivy or Jules, I think Ivy though, was sitting on the B&B tonight ....
-
It is very sad to hear about the eggs. I feel like I know these birds just through Dennis' pictures. Those last picture are amazing - you can feel the wind against the tail feathers as Jules/Ivy? banks around. I am glad they are both okay and hope they will try again at least next year.
-
Awwwwwww - Haven't been over to this thread for a few days and came over to get updated, sure never expected this news. :-\ - How odd to have both eggs disappear??? - Maybe they weren't going to hatch anyway due to the rather haphazard incubating of Jules & Ivy at the beginning? Next time will be better!! :)

Most, if not all of Dennis' recent photos are of Jules - great looking bird
-
She is a beauty! And so is Ivy...looks more and more like Trey.
-
I have not been here for a few days and that was the last news I expected.
So sorry but maybe they will attempt a second clutch. It has happened before.
Wind did that in toronto a few years back.
that just sucks :( :(
-
Traveling from point "A" to point "B" by way of "D" yesterday finds Ivy and Jules perched on the Diner in the West-End of Winnipeg.
As well a few more photos of Jules have been loaded... http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/west_wpg2
-
awesome as ever, thanks Dennis.
-
Jules and Ivy are so beautiful and wonderful to watch...Thanks again Dennis for your fantastic photos of them both! I hope they succeed next year!
-

Well said Allikat and well deserved praise! I too hope Jules and Ivy have better luck next year, be nice to see the boy who looks so like his papa have his own brood :D
-
Ivy looks sooo much like Trey it's amazing! I wish Ivy and hopefully Jules as his mate next year, a full successful clutch! We have our talons crossed for the two of you!
-
Should Ivy produce a male, TPC would have the happy task of choosing a name to do with the number 5, to honour the 5th generation of the dynasty in Winnipeg.
-
"Cinco"
-
"Cinco"
;)
-
Is that Spanish, or Latin?
-
Still hope for the West-End pair...Ivy & Jules. Will continue to track this pair. Just doing some editing of photos from today and it appears...
Stay tuned ??
-
Oh I'm tuned..sharp, flat...whatever works! ;)
-
Spanish, bcbird. 'Cinco" means 5, like Trey means 3, and Junior means 2.. (generations). What's 4? Never heard of anyone called 'Quat' LOL! TPC?
-
Arabic = Kamsa
Inuktitut = Tallimat - shortened to Tally
Swahili - Tano
maybe ... ;D

I really like Tallimat. Used to live in the north :D
-
and it appears....
does this mean maybe a reclutch????
-
Can't really tell, they are still there, hanging out at all their usual haunts and Dennis managed to catch a wonderful mid-air transfer of food, usually something adults do to chicks to teach them and males do to females during courting. We will keep an eye on them and see if they get up to any mischief ... if they do, should do sometime in the next 7 days I should think ...
-
Fingers crossed. Would be nice to have another chick or two or more.
-
My goodness, we're getting greedy! ;D GO JULES AND IVY! (Dennis, warn me if there's going to be more of those... you know, "pictures" :-[ )
-
Sorry Folks I can't post any more of those...you know, "Pictures"...Liz gets upset...but still looks :o ???
-
and looks, and refers to a lot ;D ;D ;D
-
NO! I looked at the sequence the first time, not knowing where it was leading. After that, skipped past them -- but they kept coming up at the top of your page everytime I went in. I think this says more about the rest of you -- the photos most looked at come up first, just like a web search?!! mua-ha... (clamps beak)
-
Okay, no idea what the heck Liz and Dennis are on about ... what photos of the West Winnipeg birds could possibly send Liz skittering like a spider on a griddle ... ???
-
I believe it's politely referred to as 'copulation'.
-
Aaaahhh ... we call it "romance" ;)
-
Not in anything I've seen here! Even Dennis's pics.. I believe that word is used regularly ;D
-
Some more photos of the West-End Winnipeg birds have been added...including the beginning of the Courtship food hand off.
-
Another WOW Dennis! Those are the most amazing Peregrine courtship pictures. ;D It is wonderful that Ivy and Jules are renewing their pair bond. They are so beautiful and of course we are all hoping for Ivy offspring.
-
Aaaahhh ... we call it "romance" ;)
The Dutch word used on their sites is "pairing". I always liked that.
-
Ain't translation a wonderful thing ... ::)
-
(the prude bats her eyelashes)

The remainder of the Courtship food transfer have been added.

-
GREAT photos, as usual, Dennis! I particularly like the "Dinner on the Wing" series!!!
-
Absolutely love those Dinner on the Wing photos. Thanks Dennis, you let us see part of the Falcon's lives we normally would never be able to experience.
-
Now that's precision flying!
-
Beautiful shots as usual Dennis!
Thank you for that series... that courtship most likely happens so fast that observers on the street would most likely miss all of that.
Thank you so much!
-
Thanks loads, Dennis, for allowing us to experience part of falcon's courtship. :)
-
Just at the right place at the right time...I would almost bet that nobody else viewed this exchange. Glad all have enjoyed this series of photos.
-
Happiness is sharing half a banana... ;D
-
Happiness is sharing half a banana... ;D
Dennis and I spent a few hours yesterday hanging out with Jules & Ivy - Dennis more than me, so when I got peckish and remembered I had brought a banana, I shared ... Dennis' views on happiness are so zen-like ... ;)
-
Any news on what Jules and Ivy are up to?
-
The little terrors are hanging out back on the Diner and the Bleachers and occasionally on the B&B. Oh, and they have been hanging out at the nestsite again. The whole food-transfer-in-the-air thingy that Dennis caught on film is part of their pair bonding rituals. We haven't seen any "hanky-panky" in the last little while, but we might have missed it if these two are going to try again. We hope to be able to get access a wee bit later this week to the old nestsite just to see if they have been up to some mischief since they lost their eggs ....
-
Well, well, well...must be young love!!! :P
Even though these two lost their eggs...it's wonderful to see that they are doing their pair bonding! :-*
-
A few more photos have been added.
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/west_wpg2
Ivy wasn't in the mood for a photo shoot...Jules show up solo.
Cheers !
-
Great shots Dennis...Jules is a Beauty!!
-
We haven't seen any "hanky-panky" in the last little while, but we might have missed it if these two are going to try again.
Even if more eggs don't happen this year, it looks like real romance for next year! Whoever is here first will wait for the other, like P last year. :) :)
-
A few more photos added of Jules.
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/west_wpg2
-
Awesome, as usual Dennis! :o BTW, those last two of the bird stretch are "content bird" in bird speak. When they stretch a wing down and the leg along with it. At least it is in parrot speak!
Enjoy all the photos you send Dennis and once again want to let you know that I love receiving them and am amazed at some of the shots that you are lucky enough to get.
-
More photos have been added.

LOVE those latest photos of Ivy. What a handsome male with those broad white shoulders and upper chest. Junior Rockstar!
Thanks, Dennis.

Beautiful...and it makes me want to "hang out" with you for a day...I could "hold" something :o ;D :P :-X :-*
Y e s, I'm laughing at myself!

LORIANN!!!!!! :P
-
no worries, TCONA - though I think you posted this in the wrong thread (and seriously, there is a LOT wrong with this thread now).
you'll get the hang of all of this. and you can always ask!
-
Loriann - based on a scale of 1 to 10...I like you more than 10! and you "took" the bait!

omg.. now she's dangling bait in front of me.

BOT (back on topic)
Dennis has this marvelous little powerpoint presentation of Jules and Ivy exchanging food in mid-air. If you haven't seen it yet, you should pm him with your email address. I also hope to add it to our photo gallery (I'm a wee bit behind there) this weekend and I'll post a link here for those of you who are determined to wait ...
-
Holy poop batman, I gotta get back in the game. Snooze, ya loose I guess.
Way tooooooo funny you guys. ;D
Oh yea, BOT, on my way out west I saw one of the ww falcons, nicely perched on a letter. First time spotting one of those guys ;D
And to top it off, saw an eagle on my way home. 8) 8)
-
Photos added...
Let me tell you...folks come from out of no where when they see "TPC"...there has been many interesting conversations I have over heard in the past years...lol
Folks come and ask...are you watching the Hawks...Tracy is quick to reply...they are "Peregrines". And gives each a lesson in Peregrines...101
-
Good on Tracy, edumacating people on the Peregrines!!!!
-
And gives each a lesson in Peregrines...101
And if they keep hanging around they get the graduate course if they aren't careful ... ;D

Dennis kindly sent me an email with this, but sadly it wouldn't open, and he didn't have it in another format. It will be great to get it in the gallery!
-
Me too bcbird. It wanted me to download a program that my computer said was harmful. Needless to say, Didn't do it.
-
For those that couldn't open or run the power point...you need to have Microsoft Office installed on your PC. You will have the same problem when TPC puts up the link. What you need to do is download a free power point reader from Microsoft. When installed you can only view power point presentations. Here is a link to do so...if you are interested.

Always get excited when I hear the cry of a Peregrine...much like a child that hears the chimes of the ice cream truck !
A number of new photos have been added to the West-end Winnipeg gallery.

More will be added after the week-end.

I'll see if I can't set it up as a slideshow in the photo gallery as well, which might help those of you without Office ...

Thanks, TPC.
-
PowerPoint -- great invention!
-
WOW!!!! GREAT SHOTS!! I think Jules and Ivy just might recognize the two of you (Dennis & Tracy) ;)
-
What a look. I'm glad I'm not a pigeon! Thank you for sharing these.
-
I have office and couldn't open the powerpoint. My computer insisted it was encrypted. I asked Dennis to send me another copy and he did. It opened beautifully! Thank you, Dennis, for all your great photos, comments and services.
By the way, loved the powerpt.
-
Its unfortunate you had trouble Moka. And the file wasn't encrypted technically, it just had a lock on it so that it couldn't be "opened" (vs "run") to take it apart for the photos. It was designed to run automatically but not to be "opened". Dennis is very generous with his photos, but some photos he deserves to be able to keep copyrighted. ;D

The remainder of the Courtship food transfer have been added.

Wonderful photos! Thank you for sharing.
-
Again...just wonderful photos Dennis!
This pair is beautiful together...Crossing my fingers and toes that they will be back together again next summer and have a successful nesting season.
-
A few more photos have been added.
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/west_wpg2
-
Thanks for all of the great photos Dennis.
Ivy was hanging out in his favourite spot this afternoon. He is so gorgeous. Let's hope that these two are successful next year.
-
Loved the photos Dennis. Thanks.
-
To all the phanatics that have taken the time to post comments...thank-you. Not all photos are of printing quality...but will give you an idea of what can unfold in mere seconds. This is the reason that many photos have been posted. A Bird's Eye View...so to speak for those that are unable to view Birds in action.
Do to other events and circumstances at this time I'm unsure when I will be able to get to the West-End Birds again. These Peregrines are the most easily photographed birds do to their surrounding/location. Sorry that Trey & Princess didn't nest in a location like this to give easy access !!
Now, perhaps I should rent my own crane and platform...with tent and hang out with the birds ?? A lift for a morning cup of "Tim's" that Phanatics would provide of coarse...just kidding.
Looking forward to the "Banding Day"
Cheers !
Dennis
-
Dennis....you're work is incredible! Thank you for taking the time to get out there and take stunning photos of our peregrines!
-
Dennis,
I have seen one or both soaring in West Winnipeg when driving thru the area...it's ok I'm the passenger. Having seen your awesome pictures helps me to 'see them better' Thanks for documenting the lives of these beautiful birds.
-
Thanks for all the photos Dennis. We have been so fortunate to be so close to Jules and Ivy. What beautiful birds. You made them come alive for us.
-
The pictures are just wonderful! The quality is phenomenal! What a great way for us to see these beautiful birds as though they are in action!
Thanks Dennis
-
Any updates on what the WW pair are up to? Haven't spotted them the last couple of times I have been in the area.
-
Little terrors were still around on the weekend, hanging out in all their usual places. No renesting though, and pretty sure we are beyond both their hormonal window and our hopeful window :D
Next year is another chance ....
-
Thanks TPC
I'll keep a lookout next time I'm in the area.
-
Sorry everyone....I usually post here to let ya'll know that I see this pair twice a day every day!
Sorry about that...as TPC noted, these two hang out at their usual spots. I look for them every morning and afternoon and seem to luck out and find one of them and sometimes both of them...
I'm happy that they are both hangin' out together...which probably means that they are officially a couple. Let's all hope that next year Ivy and Jules will be back and raise some beautiful falcons. Other spotters will have to keep an eye or two out for them as I won't be able to.
-
Well said, allikat.
Are you moving?
-
Thanks Liz!!
And yes..I'm moving! I'm moving to Regina...a job offer that I just had to take!
I will certainly miss Winnipeg with all of my heart..and I will miss seeing Jules, Ivy, Trey & Princess twice a day! Thankfully, I have webcams and the forum to keep my updated!
-
Woo hoo! A sighting (maybe)! Somebody (Ivy? Jules?) atop a building while I was driving east on Portage. Given that I was driving and my distance vision is not the greatest, I can't be sure but it certainly looked like it should be a peregrine. That's the trouble with bad eyes. Which leads to a question for another thread - can someone who is very short-sighted help with fledge watch?
-
YOu get to go for the coffee and donuts ... :P
-
That much I can definitely see!
-
I spotted Jules today on my way downtown. She was perched on the shady side of a building.
-
Looked like Jules hanging out on the B&B this evening ... not surprising given the windspeed and direction, her corner is nice and sheltered ...
-
It was Jules...I saw her do a fly around with the wind and come across super fast and go up to her perch. She's amazing to watch!
-
Allikat:
You will have to leave your address here when you move . We pass through there when going to Winnipeg
We were stationed in Regina fro 2 years and I did not mind it at all. I was not not peregrines then. Hope there is one there for you to watch
sorry TPC
-
You bet Bev... :)
BOT ;D
Saw Jules again this morning on her favorite perch...I'm assuming it's her fav because she's been there a lot.
-
Saw one of them soaring above the empty army base as I was traveling on Route 90.
For some reason, all of the small birdies were hiding :D
-
Saw one this morning perched...I think it was Ivy, based on size. Saw Jules tearing the skies up yesterday....They are fun to watch.
It's very hard to keep my eyes on the road...yes, I stop.
-
I give lessons in "Driving/Watching..101"
-
Sign me up!!! ;)
-
Mornin' folks,
Just wanted to let you everyone know that Jules and Ivy were together this morning perched about 10 feet apart from each other enjoying the morning sun. Ahhhh, young love. :-*
-
Thanks Allicat for the update on Jules and Ivy. I have been wondering about them and was hoping to drive out "there" this wknd to see if I might spot them. My daughter has observed them quite a bit and says I have to see the beauty that Jules is.
-
Jules is a very pretty falcon....and Ivy is handsome (got his looks from Dad - TREY)
-
I spotted Jules perched yesterday at around 3:45. She was still there when we went by at 4:15.I didn't see Ivey though.
-
Saw them both this morning.....Ivy facing one direction and Jules the other.
-
Thanks allikat, good to know they are both still hanging out together.
-
Same thing again this evening....
-
Saw them both this morning.....Ivy facing one direction and Jules the other.
If I were to go looking for these two, where would I look, allikat? :-\

sorry Kinderchick.... The West Winnipeg Birds are in a Top Secret area (due to privacy reasons). :-X is the word.

sorry Kinderchick.... The West Winnipeg Birds are in a Top Secret area (due to privacy reasons)is the word.
That's what I thought, allikat! :'(
-
Hi allikat,
any sign of the WW pair? I've been out of the city for the past couple of weeks and haven't had an opportunity to spot them.
Thanks!
-
Yes...They are still hangin' around 8)
I stop and take a look to see if I can find them...sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. Today's air quality report is that Ivy was perched on the same spot this afternoon as he was this morning. He was just perchin' and lookin' pretty! What a life! ::)
-
I saw Ivy yesterday on my way out of town. Quite the handsome man, just like his dad.
-

Oh I know B, isn't he beautiful? and...isn't it scary how alike they are (Ivy and Trey)? Good genes!
-
thanks for the update allikat and bccs.
-
You're welcome pmg! ;D
-
okay....right thread ::)
I saw Ivy this morning and Jules this afternoon. I am so lucky!!! ;D
-
Wanted to update for the folks that aren't able to see our West Winnipeg pair.
This morning, as I was stopped at a light, saw Jules fly and swoop up, actually folks more like warp speed flying here....all I can say is WOW! Falcons are amazing!
She swooped up to her regular perch, she was cacking up a storm. Ivy was on his regular perch facing another direction. Maybe she was giving him the gears for perchin' all morning. ::)
-
Air quality check....
Both birds are still hanging around at their usual spots which is great!!!
Heard Jules this morning...gotta love those female falcons and there screeching ::)
I'm pretty sure she was having a conversation with Ivy because he showed up pretty quick....breakfast perhaps for his loved one?
-
Aw, that is sweet! Thanks for this update allikat :-*
-
I'm thinking that this yelling by the females is something passed onto them from Princess. Here, Brandon, Edmonton. Sheeeesh. But it does make for easy spotting. ;D
-
Attitude, they've all got attitude! I love it . . .
-
I'm thinking that this yelling by the females is something passed onto them from Princess. Here, Brandon, Edmonton. Sheeeesh. But it does make for easy spotting. ;D
I don't know Jules' excuse.....perhaps they just know that right tone of falcon screech :D
-
Just happen to be in the West-end early this morning...6:20ish
Jules on her corner at the Diner and no sign of Ivy. After stepping out of the truck for a couple of minutes...off the perch she comes...makes a couple of circles and then behind the Bleachers. Then another loop around the Bleachers, but didn't come back.
Change my location hoping to locate...yep ! Both now perched on the East side of the Bleachers...then Ivy takes flight and does a couple of turns and heads towards a near by tower.
Checking my watch...I still have some time before work.
The clouds start to clear and the early morning sun makes him glow...out of the truck...click,click,click,then Jules fly's in. More click, click, click...with a lot of keee keee kee kee ke ke ke ke going on...what a sight to see and hear on a early Tuesday morn.
-
AWESOME, what a way to start your day, hey Dennis???? Thanks for that report. :-*
-
Great report Dennis. Does this mean more pictures??
-
Yahoo, I hope so!! We like pictures!! ;D Especially Dennis' picture :-*

Woo Hoo!!! Really happy you we're able to see them this morning. Can't wait for more of your incredible pictures :D
-
New thread for a new month ....
-
Hmm, not sure what happened to a post BccS and I made on Monday August 3rd......however,
Today, I saw a fabulous display off flying by the two West Winnipeg birds, Jules and Ivy. For a moment, I thought I saw more than two falcons flying around, so I was a bit concerned. I pulled over for a moment, but they were just so fast, I couldn't get a great look at them, plus, I wasn't able to get into the best position to spot them all. It was just the way they were all flying and their behavior. There was no aerial battles taking place, from what I witnessed, but again, I did not have open sky to watch.
I do know that there were pigeons scattering about so I would like to think that the two of them were stooping for supper. I wish I could report more than that but, that's all I saw.
-
Your original post had too many details on the location of the West Winnipeg pair so it self-destructed (with a little help).
-

That's what I figured...sorry about that TPC.
When I post, I try really hard to NOT disclose anything about the area as I respect the reasons why.
I can't even remember what it was that I wrote, so all in all, no harm, no foul, or as the master says, no fuss, no muss! ;)
-
Heya Alli, just a short note - I saw Jules around 10:30 today and Ivy around 12:30. I sent them a kiss for ya. ;D
-
Awwwweeeee :-*, thanks B!
I miss seeing Jules and Ivy....thanks for that update! And thanks for blowing a kiss at them for me! :)
-
Heya Allikat, specially for you. ;D
Saw your boy Ivy on the way in today. He was sitting on the south sign, looking very content and very much like Trey. Might go have a look round this weekend to see if I can find her. Will keep you updated. :-* B
-
I saw both Ivy and Jules sitting on the south sign today at around 1pm :)
-
Way to spot pmg, you've just made alli's day a happy one. ;D :-*
-
Oh I'm so happy and teary eyed at the same time. Thank you to the both of you for keeping me in the loop, I really miss seeing the Ivy looking more and more like Trey and his beloved Ivy every day almost.
*sigh* and :'(
-
no worries allikat, happy to have made your day...I'll post again when I see Ivy and Jules. I drive by their haunts pretty often and am always thrilled when I spot them :)
-
Thank you very much!!! I wonder if they miss me... ::)
Okay, it's a long shot!
-
Thank you very much!!! I wonder if they miss me... ::)
Okay, it's a long shot!
Of course they do, and so does Tupper. ;)
-
or they're thinking "our stalker is gone! *phew*"
-
or they're thinking "our stalker is gone! *phew*"
HA HA Pchemist!!! Good one!
Naw, they knew it was me and loved to be watched...
-
This month started out with Jules and Ivy on the Diner first thing this morning as I drove past. Actually, they buzzed the Bleachers then settled onto their usual corners on the Diner ... just like the old days!
-
Thanks TPC, Allikat wll be so glad to know you saw them both :)
-
Oh...am I ever happy that you saw the both of them TPC!!!!! Love hearing about Jules and Ivy. It's weird though, I feel a little lost as I always watched for them every morning and late afternoon. Okay, I'm having falcon withdrawals here...
Off topic here...same goes for the Radisson pair! I also would stop to see them every morning and afternoon, to and from work and some weekends with BccS....more falcon withdrawals!! :'(
-
Dennis found another hangout for the WW birds and since I saw Jules there this morning, I think it probably deserves a name, so, lets go with "the Look-out". So while she was happily looking east from the Look-out, Ivy was tucked up on the Bleachers - almost missed him in fact, he was tucked so close to the wall!
-
Now I have to figure out what "the Look-out" is. ??? I think I know the others. :)
-

Good Luck ;D

0750 hours (local)
Rockstar Junior was parked at the nestsite this morning - his white breast made him very easy to see as he had decided to look "out" (e.g., out from the building) rather than "in" when all one sees is his grey back and frequently that just gets lost against the back ground. But not today .... pretty bird, good paternal genes ... but I'm not biased ...
-
Oh no, not biased in the least. ::) The ultimate model of objectivity is our TPC :P

Biased....No, not at all! ::)
But I know what you mean TPC, Ivy is just like his Dad. He can tuck himself in so well, just like Trey can but when they want to be seen, they just know where to perch! Boys (Falcon).......
-
I spotted one of the west Winnipeg pair this afternoon. Based on Tracy's description of his white breast I will guess that it was Ivy.
-
Great to hear!!!! Oh I can't believe how much I miss them! * sigh * :'(
-
A late lunch break found me near the "West-Enders"...seemed like a good place to stop. Time was 4:45-5:30.
Both birds seen...sitting perched, and facing forward at "The B&B"...lots of preening, stretching and tail up in the air..."watch out below" kind of stuff...sorry no camera today ((
Cheers !
-
Dennis, say it ain't so - no camera!? I can't believe it!

Both birds seen...sitting perched, and facing forward at "The B&B"...lots of preening, stretching and tail up in the air..."watch out below" kind of stuff...sorry no camera today ((
Cheers !
Thanks for the update on the WW pair Dennis....and where exactly was your camera??
-
Sorry, it was the Diner and not the B&B that I had posted. :-[ and just how do you think I felt...with no camera :( :(
-
You're never going to live this down Bob. ;)
-
What! No camera??? I thought it was surgically attached. :P

Here's a neat new story about the Winnipeg peregrines ... The best and worst years for Winnipeg’s peregrine falcons (http://pegmag.com/index/?p=449#) in the online magazine PegMag.
-
That's an excellent and interesting article - and I love the photos!
-
Great article. Love the last bit about the postcard! What a perfect way to end it.
-
Great story and love the postcard tale..lol..that's something I'd have written too... ;D
-
The sad bit about the eggs seemed new to me, I didn't realize one egg was accidentally broken by the parents. Otherwise it was a great article, and with good choice of photos.
It is exciting to realize this year there were seven leaving. Wonder where they are now?
-
I love this pair! Yes, unfortunate things happened this year but I truly believe that this pair will produce strong chicks one day! It's in the genes!!! ;D
-
Great story, thanks, Tracy.

*sigh*
I will miss watching Jules and Ivy!!
-
Don't know for sure the parents broke the egg, could have been attacked by crows, had a single hole in it - could have bashed against anything when it rolled. Why would it roll you ask, because Jules & Ivy were nesting on a hard flat surface with no scrape in the gravel to keep their eggs contained. And they were scared off the eggs frequently it appeared to us - not intentionally, just not a great nestsite and they were constantly on alert. As for the other two eggs, the article is a bit wrong ... the eggs disappeared and we assume they were "disappeared" either by the parents (like Trey & Princess) because they were not viable OR because a crow or something similar got to the nest, spooked off Jules/Ivy, got the eggs and poof. As I said, not an ideal nest location!! I think the "parents took them" was a cross-over from the Radisson story where Trey or Princess removed one egg after about a week of incubation. No worries though, it's nice to have a great piece like that.
One thing that is actually two related things is that the bottom photo isn't of Ivy, its of Jules and I really wish they had identified the photographers. I gave them the middle image but the first was taken from our photo gallery and is a photo taken by Pam and the bottom was taken from Dennis' photo gallery. The photo I provided that they didn't use was one of the chicks, which is one they asked for specifically but hey. What bothers me more is that none of them have photo credits. I will email to see if they will add them and will let you know how I make out.
-
Tracy, thanks for thinking of that, I see they have now included photo credits.
-
I think I might have seen it right after it was posted because I just got the email from the author saying it was posted online. Probably just by fluke that I saw the first draft online before the credits were posted!!!
Pretty nice though don't you think?
-
They weren't there when I first looked, either.
Yes, it is nice!
-
Again I post another *sigh*...
Jules and Ivy were a treat to watch fly across the West Winnipeg sky!
Ivy looks more and more like Trey everyday!
Jules is a beauty and I hope she can calm down and not spook so easily so there will be little white fluffy cuties.
Oh how I will miss the falcons in the Western skies!
