So, the Chick doesn't kiss and tell. Admirable quality, but still getting visuals :o :o ;D
But, how long from hatching to fledge for a hummingbird??

This link has a picture of Sassy, the tiny chick taken to rehab.
Would you believe that poor Phoebe lost her first eggs to "Godzilla" (lizard) and today a crow came and took her eggs around 10 pacific time. Probably right after you had been viewing the camera Kinderchick!! Poor hummer!!!Yes, Ellie! :'( I have been out of town visiting a friend and we just stepped away from the webcam to have lunch... We were so excited about the 2 new eggs! Then, when we returned, they were gone, apparently snatched and eaten by a crow! :'( We are so very sad about this! :'(
chickens lay eggs every day or every other day... its sad she's lost her eggs again... and to a Godzilla ( ! ) and then a crow?Loriann, does this mean that Phoebe could lay some more eggs again very soon? ???
If y'all are needing your hummingbird chick fix, here is another nest, with eggs. Also in California.

It's a surprise she laid anymore at all as this is coming up to her "off" time according to the website. This Mama needs a few months off. She must lose a lot of calcium. Thanks for this post, birdcamfan. I am new at learning about hummingbirds. Didn't know much about their reproductive cycle. Hadn't even thought about the calcium loss. It was just such a shock for me yesterday when her eggs were snatched by a crow, particularly after I had been watching her get ready to lay them. And when she returned to her nest, she appeared to be looking for them, which was sad. :'(
Is this a different nest? Pheobe's eggs were both eaten by a crow on the 29th.Yes, I can see how the two hummingbird sites can be confused, birdcamfan. Both appear to have the same last name of "Allan". So sad about Pheobe's eggs. :'( But Bitsy, at the other nest site, seems to be doing fine with her two young 'uns, Bean and Button! :D
Who is Phoebe? Where is Phoebe?Phoebe Allan is the Hummingbird on a nest in California who has had a variety of nasty things happening to her eggs (ie. attacked by lizards, snatched by crows!) She's actually on the thread below this one, TPC. Maybe you want to move these posts there? :-\
Makes sense ... also means I'm merging this thread into the webcam thread so that folks can keep up with the story! There may be a bit of confusion here, TPC. :-\ There are two different Hummingbird webcams on this thread, both with similar last names. Pheobe Allen is a Hummingbird in Orange County, California and Bitsy Allan is a different Hummingbird in San Juan Capistrano, California. Go figure? ???
Especially Kinderchick since the species of hummingbird is an "Allen's Hummingbird" :o :D ;) :-*Well, who knew?! ??? None other than you, TPC?! ;) And here I thought "Allen" and "Allan" were the last names of the people who set up the different webcams in their yards! ::) LOL!!! I did not even realize that "Allen" is a species of Hummingbird! :o Thanks for the Wikipedia info. :-* This teacher sure has alot to learn yet! ;)
If you poke around in Phoebe's site (the Allen Hummingbird at this site is named Pheobe) there is lots of information and links to rescue shelters in California. I learned a lot.Yes, bcf, I have just recently begun poking around Phoebe Allen's website and have been learning alot myself! :D Lots of information there, for sure!
Considering how many times this little bird re-nests every single year, she deserves "Mother's Week"!!!Yes, you sure are right about that, TPC! She has re-nested 5 times, laying 2 eggs each time, since January! :o
I think the black stuff you're referring to Kinderchick is known as hummingbird poop-art.
I think the black stuff you're referring to Kinderchick is known as hummingbird poop-art.Actually, allikat & moka, almost as soon as I posted the question, I was thinking that it could be that! ::) I just find it hard to believe that those 2 little guys can create so MUCH "poop art"! :o
The Hummingbird chicks sure have grown! Their eyes are open and it sure looks "squishy" in the nest these days! ;)They certainly do look squished. When they move around it is like the nest is elastic. Guess that is why it is bound with spider webbing. Amazing :o
Alison,
I love this site. Where else can you see a hummingford still enough to gaze your fill?
I have a question for you, how do you take photos from the webcam?
I have a question for you, how do you take photos from the webcam?I want to learn to do this too... I think that TPC has given some instructions on the Forum board on a thread called "Snaps from the webcam". But I haven't had the time to try it yet. Maybe one day? :-\

[I wasn't aware that TPC had already given instructions on how to do this. TPC is excellent at explaining things, so it would be redundant for me even to attempt to do so. I am sure that she explains it much better than I ever could.
I am glad they enjoyed it.Me too! :D And you contributed to their education, bcf! :-*
Kinderchick, I can't see any eggs in the nest today; the other day, I saw one. Are they well hidden?I'm not sure what happened to Phoebe's eggs, Elaine. :-\ Yesterday, there were clearly 2 eggs in her nest but today when we looked, we couldn't see any eggs either... I'm wondering if a crow came along and ate them, like last year? ??? They are, after all, the size of a tic tac! :o We didn't even see Phoebe or her partner at all this morning. :'(
Here is a short clip of Pheobe and what looks like it might be a egg?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p19MLuuBcVs
First egg laid this morning @ 9:05am. ;DThanks for letting us know, allikat! :) I looked earlier this morning and didn't see an egg. Too bad about the "intruder". >:(
Once I got past the annoying advertising, I was delighted to see little Phoebe on her nest, and feeding her chick. I also heard crows in the background, and I think Phoebe hears them as well, and is sticking very close to the nest.
Are these Japanese names??
Good grief, I think that Phoebe alone is ensuring the survival of her species...LOL! ;)
Monique, the rehabber, is on the chat right now, answering questions. Che Che (pronounced Shay Shay) is doing well. Apparently she's the size of Monique's baby finger nail!! :o Monique feels that part of the problem is that the chick is so small - possibly a preemie. Can't lift her head to open her beak on her own to feed. She is eating every 20 minutes though ;D Way to go little one!

The official site says that sadly CheChe passed away sometime after 11 pm last night. Poor little one.
I haven't been able to get a peak at Scout. Apparently, it's very hot at the nest (85 C) so Phoebe's keeping her/him shaded. It sounds like he's doing well :)
...probably referring to the tornado that ripped through the town of Joplin...
Joplin just fledged ;D 6:26 California time
...So the little hummingbird sitting on the nest is Joplin?
...So the little hummingbird sitting on the nest is Joplin?
No, that's Heather right now, one of Phoebe's 2 chicks, still sitting in the nest, Doreen. Joplin keeps fledging and then returning to the nest. ::) I've never seen a hummingbird fledgling return to the nest so many times. Most of the photos on this board are from past years, I think. Do you have the link to the webcam, Doreen? If not, here it is... http://phoebeallens.com/
Just a couple more weeks or so before Phoebe's back! ;D
Rose looks incredulous.
And the second was hatched this morning! ;D
And the second was hatched this morning! ;D
Yes! And their names are Sansa and Arya. :D
I haven't checked this nest for days. Tuned in to learn that a crow took the eggs this morning!...:'(
