If a thread is locked down, is it possible to quote from it? Thanks.
-
It should be but it isn't just click on the "quote" button.
- Click on the "quote" button
- Highlight all the text - including the quote tags
- Copy the highlighted text
- Go to the unlocked thread where you wish to reference the quote
- Click on "reply" just as you would do if you wished to post otherwise
- Paste the text
- Add whatever additional text you wish
- Click "post" - I would preview it first just to be sure of how it would look
If that doesn't work, let me know. If you have problems with formatting, let me know that too and I will check it out and we'll figure out what happened.

First problem I have encountered is that in a locked down thread there are no quote buttons to click.
-
I just copied the remark and pasted it into the open thread with quotes, and the name of the person at the beginning. Then made my response in a new paragraph.
-
Oh, thanks Liz, that makes sense. I'll give it a try.

"Better, but long-term news is that Princess and Trey will have spent an extra two months replenishing their personal reserves which will help them get through migration, overwintering and have them in better shape next year when they return than they usually are. Yes, that is nine months away, but still ..."

This has added significance now that we know they are about to be parents again!
(Yay! it worked-thanks Liz, thanks Tracy)

Don't forget the quotes! :)

Sorry for all the lack of knowhow here. This is the first forum I have ever wanted to belong to and post on!
I just modified my first try by adding quotation marks. Is there a different way to get it to look more like the standard quote does? For instance, that great highlighting in purple?
-
Don't apologize -- I don't have a ton of experience either! You could highlight it in a different colour -- that's a great idea!!, and it hadn't occured (sp?) to me.

Actually, they are just sort of playing in the box and messing (or "muffing") up the scrape in the box. Imagine digging a hole in your garden for a plant and the neighbour's kid, cat, dog, squirrel comes and knocks the sides a bit or plays in it and the nice neat sides/bottom/edges you made are now kind of "muffed" up.
Let's see how this turned out.
-
Oh! This is great fun... Amazing what one finds to do while waiting around.
-
I'd say that's perfect! Good thought.
-
yes it does look great.
-
How do I quote something from a locked thread, so that I can refer to it in another one?
-
Probably copy, and then paste where you want it. You can highlight it in the new location to distinguish it as a quote. That worked for me last season, as I recall.
-
Well, I tried that before I posted -- I need to learn to say that. It wouldn't let me copy.
-
Okay, this is obviously a question for our Goddess.
-
really? you couldn't cut and paste text from the screen? weeeeeeeird.
-
It wouldn't highlight it to copy. I'll try again...
-
Two ways to do it ...
1. highlight the text in the locked thread, right click your mouse, "copy", go to new thread, click on "reply", click on the quote icon above (see the two rows of buttons above - the first row starts with B for bold, second row second from the end is the quote icon) and then paste the text between the two quote statements - that will make it stand out as a quote. Then add in your text after the second quote statement.
2. find the locked thread, find the post you want to quote and check the reply number (top left corner), then copy the URL address. Go to the new thread, click on "reply", click on the insert hyperlink icon (second button row, third from the left) and paste the URL between the url statements and then after the second url statement, type in your text and tell folks which reply in the locked thread they should go look at.
Good Luck!

#2 it is. Thanks, techie/goddess!

Alternate Option #1
Something else, that is probably even easier is,
1. go to the locked thread
2. click on the subject line of the post you want to quote/refer to
3. copy the URL in the URL address box at the top of your screen
4. go to the thread you want to post in
5. post your comments then paste the URL you copied
Now, when someone reads your post and they want to read the original quote, all they need to do is click on the URL, a new window will open and they will be able to read the original quote.

Alternate Option #2
This one is even easier ...
1. Highlight and copy the text you want to quote in the locked thread.
2. Go to the thread you want to put the quote and click on "Reply"
3. Now look above the text box, above the row of emoticons (smilies). The icon that looks like a message bubble (think comics) will insert "quote" command code. The icon is second from the right end. Click on the "quote" icon. Two command codes will appear, each within square brackets.
4. Paste your quote between the two command codes - the quote is in blue below
[ quote ] your quoted text goes here [ /quote ]
the end results looks like this:
your quoted text goes here
5. If you want to identify who you are quoting, put an equal sign after "quote" in the first comman code and type in their name ...
[ quote=The Peregrine Chick ] your quoted text goes here [ /quote ]
the end result looks like this:
your quoted text goes here
