Welcome to 2018!
Only 88 days until at least one of our birds comes home!
Need help counting down? ;) bookmark our Countdown Timer (http://www.species-at-risk.mb.ca/pefa/)!
-
I miss our peregrine falcons but look forward to finding out who will return to Manitoba in the spring; the countdown timer is very helpful. Thank you, TPC.
I'm hoping that 2018 brings many smiles to all of us! :) Happy New Year!
-
I anxiously await their arrival! They cheer me every spring after a long manitoba winter.

:) I anxiously await the (imminent?) return of our residents. As well, I have already bookmarked other sites.
http://chesapeakeconservancy.org/explore/wildlife-webcams/peregrine-falcon/ Current view shows Barb, who looks as though she is sitting on an egg. I'm puzzeled by this as it is currently 5:00 A.M. EST., dawn and there IS sound. ???

I was watching the morning news after 7:00 am - looked like a birdie was caught on the camera.
Just didn't pay enough attention to which channel I was watching - CTV or Global.
Global I think because the photo had the downtown in the background.

Let the season begin. The 1st arrival is on the cam as I watch. ;D He/she just became verbal and is calling out to someone. Happy dance!

Both have downtown studios and have live programs weekdays from 6 to 9:00 A.M. I still remember the year one of them showed a live cam that had a falcon come in for a visit. I'm thinking CTV. :)

For those who didn't see the photo on CTV ... it's a Merlin which means the peregrines will be home soon!! ;D

If the Falcon Forum calendar says 21 days, but there is a merlin back already, does that mean we might be running ahead of schedule for this year?
Or do merlins always get a head start on the peregrines?

The merlins are usually visible first - not necessarily because they are the first migrants home but because quite a number of merlins overwinter. Interestingly American Kestrels are often seen first at HawkWatch sites but they are just not that visible once they get up here.
Our peregrines typically start turning up in the second half of March. The Brandon birds often arrive in the first/second week of April but we suspect that they meet up on their way home because they are very quick to nest once they do get home.

Great news TPC, can't wait to see who it is. :)
-
Our first bird back looks very very comfortable on the edge of the box - even EyeSpy thought so yesterday!!!
EyeSpy has been upgrading our computers this year (its amazing to thing how long the old units had been working year round) and we have two cameras up and running, a couple more to replace and get up and running at the Radisson in the next little bit. Should make for a very nice viewing experience for folks this year from what I've seen so far.
Already running through this morning's video to see if our visitor shows me his band ... don't think we'll be that lucky but still .... ;D

Happy dance! Anticipation builds! ;D

Anxious to see if Princess returns - I've never followed a season yet without her! - I know she's getting a bit 'long in the tooth' but she's a tough ol' gal, so hoping she shows up again! ;D :-*
-
Peregrine season has started again!
-
The pictures look great so far. Thanks Eye-Spy!
Drama already at the nest box. Bring it on!
-
What wonderful news, to hear that the 1st PF is back!
-
WOOHOO!!!!
-
Saw somebirdie sitting on the west nest this morning at 9:45am - Quite a white breast - who could it be?? ??? ;D

The male we've been watching, who I think might be Hart (his band is messy) has a white breast - so too does Pip from last year but I'm not sure I've seen him back this year yet. Will check the recorder when I get home if I can and see what I can see. :)

Welcome home, Hart!
I hope everyone else will also make it home safely, especially Princess.
-
Yes, come on Princess, you can do it - not time for retirement quite yet! :-*
Hart sure looks comfy in that next box! ;D
-
Welcome home Hart and yes please to Princess coming home :-*
-
https://twitter.com/mbperegrines/status/978108402365804544
Not unusual to have the first bird back back well in advance of others - last year Hart arrived March 11, Joli on the 19th, Faith on the 22nd and Princess not until the 26th. In fact, 6 of our breeding birds arrived in April, 6 arrived in March.
Can't quite say it is a slower start to this year, just that we started a few days later than last year.
-
They're all going to find it a tad 'Chilly' here in the next week or so - The high on Saturday is -7, going down to -13 at night! :o :-X

-
we have none yet, that I have seen. some say they have seen other places in city but I have seen none.
gord drove almost to Alberta border the other day and he said no sightings and no ducks yet. lots of snow.
it is better cold so maybe some are delayed by USA weather also
guess it is wait an d see.
-
https://twitter.com/mbperegrines/status/979882706791215105
-
Either they've all turned tail (wing) and gone back down south or they're frozen solid somewhere in Winnipeg! - Brrrrrr!!! :o :-\
-
If I had a choice, I think I would also wait for warmer weather. ;)
-
none of ours are back in Edmonton. would you come back to this bitter cold. ;D
hope yours are home soon as they come back before ours
-
So far a slow start to the Peregrine 2018 season with 2 birds confirmed...Hart & Faith.
Peregrines 2018 Gallery has been activated with photos to be added when they become available.

....sigh....It's going to be a late start to the season! :( - Hope the birdies that are already here are coping with the deep freeze!! I think of them in the morning when the temps are announced as -27 or -22 - I mean REALLY!!! :-\ 8) ::)
-
Tomorrow is going to be a repeat of today's temps. This Old bird hopes they don't start their canoodling down south. :-\
-
https://twitter.com/mbperegrines/status/983197298195881985
-
No Princess or Smiley yet. :-[ - Smart of them to stay away from the cold - but still hope to see at least Princess swoop in like last year and claim her castle!! :-* ;D
-
I'm starting to think that wherever the rest of the birdies are waiting for warmer weather, is where they'll end up staying - as this STUPID weather is not leaving us!!! :-\
-
I have actually heard peregrine like screeching in Fort Garry a couple times in the past week, but wasn't able to spot the bird. I did identify a Coopers hawk though perched for some time in a tree in Wildwood.

Fort Garry is popular for the birds if they are looking for something other than pigeon. One or two of the birds are spotted semi-regularly hunting up and down the Red in the area by a very experienced birder who lives in the area.

Such wonderful news!
-
I'm beyond thrilled to know that Princess is back for another year! Long may she reign! :-* :-* :-*
-
That is the best news! Welcome home, Princess. :-* Now, of course, we all bite our nails for awhile and hope that she chooses the west penthouse nest box. ::)
-
;D This is the post I have been hoping to read. Our resident Radisson Royal is home. She is strong! She is invincible! :) :-*
-

With boisterous Jets fans watching the game tonight outside, she will need to seek a soundproof (??) West nestbox! ;D
-
:) So happy to hear she is home again. I kept checking everyday to see if she was back. YAY!! :D
-
Hip hip hooray for our beloved Princess! I can hardly believe she is back! What amazing news! 8)
-
FABULOUS news~!!!!! ;D - Princess and Pip :-* :-* - Now we just have to hope that all the noise from the Jets festivities does NOT drive her over to the 'Dark Side' of the Radisson!! ::) - Welcome back Princess! - Hope you brought your woolies, it's still dang COLD out there!! :D :P
-
Amazing and awesome news, welcome back Princess!!
-
Absolutely thrilled with the return of our gal, Princess !!
I hold my breath every year. I think this is a little early for her (?)
-
I am over th e moon to know that p[princess is back. and so are her daughter an d granddaughter , in Edmonton. :-*

Princess : An amazing bird. We are lucky to have such a strong matron in Winnipeg. Lovely to see her back, oh and Pip too. ;)

it seems we weren't waiting as long this year. Probably because winter's been hanging on so long and the return of the birds comes with spring. I'm so thrilled that Princess has returned for another year. Thrilled about the return of the others as well, but with Princess, it's such a gift each time she comes back to us.
-
So happy Princess is back again.
Tracy will Shaw be doing the camera again through you tube?

Both our Radisson birds are very late this year - 3 or more weeks for Princess!!

Is it too soon to determine which nest is the domain of choice, TPC? ???
-
;D
-
Is this grin a yes we will be able to watch the Radisson Peregrines again this year. :)
-
Is it too soon to determine which nest is the domain of choice, TPC? ???
I'm afraid it is. Princess has been eye-balling the east-side ledge as she usually does. Pip has been scrapping alot in the nestbox. She will choose and because she's back later, I don't know if she will be more comfortable risking the eastside ledge or not. We will just have to wait and see.
-

Yes you will be able to watch Princess & Pip this year so long as they settle down and nest - hopefully in the nestbox but we do make contingency plans just in case!
-
NoNoNoNoNo - She can NOT choose that horrid East Nest, she just can NOT!! (So there :P ) :'( :( :-[ :-\

I'm happy our aging Princess was able to return again and that Pip only had to wait a few days for her arrival. :) Here's hoping they will enjoy another successful year at the Radisson!

Maybe a little persuasion from 30,000 Jets fans tonight, 15,000 indoors and 15,000 outside will help her choose the West nest box. ::)
-
Pretty sure this is Pip, he was in making a scrape.

Good job Pip ;D - Now you just need to command your 'better half' to lay her eggs RIGHT THERE - as opposed to the OTHER place that I won't mention. ::)
-
Hi All,
I'm new to posting on the board, but have been lurking since last season. But I gotta say, I think Pip better just make a real nice scrape, hang some nice curtains, bring lots of food gifts to the nice box, cause I'm pretty sure no one commands Princess to do anything she's not set her mind to. :)
So glad to see them doing their spring time falcon things!
Take care everyone,
Ed

Welcome aboard KansasEd!
And have no fear, Pip has a very nice scrape in the nestbox - just that Princess, so far at least - hasn't been showing much interest in it. Hopefully it is just because she knows it is there and isn't really considering a nest on the east side of the building. But we won't know until she lays an egg. I should note that Princess doesn't spend a lot of time near any of our cameras - she never has. Annoying yes but that's just her :)

He likes the nest box. Hopefully Princess will follow him.
Is this late for eggs? I can't remember when they usually lay eggs but I thought it was earlier than this.
-
I'm almost afraid to check this forum - Don't want any bad 'East Ledge' news. :P :-X - Come on Princess, be smart! :-*
-
Oh Princess, follow Pip who is showing such good sense, PLEASE!!!
-
Early days yet for this pair ... no eggs as of Friday and Princess has visited the nestbox with Pip who just loves his scrape. And Princess has been scraping in it as well.
Will post some photos as soon as I can, we've had a busy week checking out sites to find out who's finally home and where they are and for some, if they have new friends. With the new Radisson software (which really is sweet) videos are formatted differently but I found a converter and it looks like I should be able to post to YouTube again - I have a nice video of Princess and Pip "dancing" together in the nestbox which I really would like to share so that is on the list along with photos.
-
I look forward to seeing that video. Keeping everything crossed that Princess chooses the nest box this year and raises a healthy family.
-
Managed to convert video and it seems to have loaded and runs well on YouTube now ....
Link to video here - http://tinyurl.com/yasv8y6f
(that's Pip's tail feathers at the start)
With thanks to Eye-Spy for replacing the balcony-cam - and this one has less of a fish-eye lens!
-
Great video. So nice to see them on the "right" side of the building.
-
Thank you for the excellent video, TPC! Seeing them both at the nest box is encouraging.
-
Yes, Princess, Pip knows the best location for this year's generation.
-
Thank you Eye-Spy!!! ;D
-
The video was great! The shadow at the back of the box was very good at showing the highs and lows of the scrape.
-
so happy they are back, wish it warm up a little though. Saw 2 flying this morning while waited for the bus, they flew towards the river towards the Forks

I don't think Pip and Princess will enjoy the street party and two CF-18 jets flying overhead this evening. Hopefully it won't affect them too much.

If Princess is thinking of nesting on the nestledge then I hope the party it annoys her royally and flounces up to the nestbox in a huff!!! Have trouble visualizing Princess in a huff ... ;D

Those jets flying over last night were so thunderous, I wouldn't be surprised if they left the city completely. :o - I can't even imagine how they handled it - Yikes. :o :-\

Well, I've only checked a few times today, but so far I haven't seen Pip or Princess on cam ... anyone know their whereabouts? ???
-
No sign of any visitors in the nest box, I've been checking the cam today also. ???
-
Saw a falcon flying over/around the River this afternoon (Assiniboine) - making quite a racket!
-
Somebirdie sitting on the West Nest ledge around 9:40am today - Not a very white breast - hope it's Princess claiming her nesting spot!! :)
-
Thank you for posting your peregrine sightings, Pam and Ballywing! :) All that I've been seeing is Pip's very nice (though very empty) scrape.
-
Yes it's high time that scrape gets used, it's a very nice one in a very good location! ;D
-
So far the scrape in the box is empty but when we checked there wasn't anything on the nestledge either ... so we wait ... impatiently ... ;)
-
All kidding aside, is it possible that Princess could be put off by all the Whiteout action, parties, etc. downtown, TPC?
-

Good question susha! The Jets beat Nashville last night and return to Winnipeg to play tomorrow (Monday) night, what could be the elimination of Nashville. No doubt there will be record crowds. I am also wondering how the noise level, not to mention the rowdiness of fans will effect Princess and Pip.
-
This is an excellent question
-
What is the latest day Princess has laid eggs?
-

Impatiently is right, and now that it seems they won't be using the east ledge either - we're left with a lot of room for speculation.
-
Hopefully Pip and Princess haven't been forced to leave the Radisson, however, it appears we may have to face that sad reality. :'( They might have been in search of a safer place to raise a family, and if so, I wonder where they're trying to settle in ... could they have found an empty nestbox? :-\ ???
-
So far the scrape in the box is empty but when we checked there wasn't anything on the nestledge either ... so we wait ... impatiently ... ;)
I might have misinterpreted the "nestledge" you mentioned, TPC. I'm not certain, but since my earlier reply (at 14:47) I've noticed that your post could very well have meant the ledge on the balcony of the nestbox, as you did not mention the dreaded east word. Anyhow, I'm sorry if I got it all wrong.
So I'll continue to wait (impatiently) until you have further news to share about Pip and Princess.
-
Is this going to be a year of no eggs and little ones. Have there not been eggs laid anywhere here yet.
I was sure we usually had eggs that were being incubated by now. ??? ???
-
remember the falcons are later this year. we are just now getting eggs and we have one with no eggs yet. some of yours came back on time but your key one s came in later
-
Yes it's a later start for sure - the temps were so cold I guess they stayed away longer. - No worries about that - just nesting location! :o :P
-
I think we’re going to be in a wait and see what story Princess and Pip want to tell us!
Not much we can do at this point, but, waiting, and more waiting, is what it looks like, unfortunately. :-X
-

As long as we are waiting there is hope Princess will choose the nestbox ... so I'm okay waiting for a few more days before our nest nest check! ;D
-
It sounds like you still have to make trips to check the east side ledge, TPC. I'm just wondering if there's been any further progress on the cams?
-

We've been doing what cam work we can both here at the Radisson and at Logan where it is looking more and more like Faith is not going to nest in the box. At the Radisson at least, until we know where she's going to nest we don't want to spend all our time on the nestbox cams just in case she chooses the ledge. Regardless, it looks like y'all will have much more viewing time this year than in other years - normally we would go live 10-14 days before hatch, this year it looks like everyone will be able to watch them do most of their incubating as well!! (knock on wood because tech is never predictable!)
-

And yes, it is a hardship to visit the nestsites on a weekly basis but we are willing to make the sacrifice ;D
-
Thought I saw a birdie sitting on the letter 'N' of the west Radisson sign around 9am today - also thought I saw another birdie around the same time on the 'A" of the Manitoba Hydro building - facing east. - Wasn't clear, just little 'lumps' but kinda looked like our birdies!! ;D
-
Happened to be watching the Shaw connection for the nest box and saw a shadow of someone sitting on the edge of the nest box, then the birdie jumped into the nest box for a very short time and then was out of it again. Could not tell who it was as it was so quick and the picture so small. But at least I saw someone in the right place.
-
Ohhh - Good!!!! - :D Every time I check the cam, the nest box is empty. - Good to know somebirdie is still nearby! ;D

I think it was Pip. He was in there a few times this afternoon, he did a little scraping. :)

Thank you for all of the time spent checking sites and working on the cams, which is understandably difficult to prioritize when you don't know where our falcons will nest.
I do hope that a cam (such as the skycam) will soon be able to provide some help for you, TPC.
And the possibility of a longer viewing time this year sounds great! :)

pigeons are very brave Haroun falcon nests. ( do not know why)
-
There's a birdie shadow showing, but whoever it is, is staying outside the nest for now.
-
Could it be that the reason we're not seeing Pip or Princess is because Eye-spy, TPC, and Dennis are hanging out in their territory again? ;)
-
Do all the nests in Manitoba that we can see now have eggs except Downtown? Maybe the Radisson will not have eggs this year?
-
let hope they have eggs. we are still waiting on one of our sites for eggs
-

If only - that I could take care of.
Actually, Pip is in the box everyday - sometimes a lot, sometimes not so much. On Tuesday, Princess and Pip were in the box dancing and Princess stayed to do a little renovating on both scrapes then sat on the edge of the nestbox for the next hour. That is at least some maybe hopeful news.

Nope - West Winnipeg does, looks like McKenzie Seeds does. At last check (same time we last checked at the Radisson) Logan did not, Radisson does not & four other possible locations have not begun incubating so can't say they have eggs or will have eggs. Late start for everyone except Sol & Hurricane - they are only a couple of days off their incubation start date last year & the year before.

Obviously, I haven't been checking the live cam enough, so this is helpful news regarding Pip and Princess! Thank you for the pic of Pip. :)

Uh Oh - The fighter Jets are going over the arena again tomorrow at gametime :o - Yikes, they are seriously explosive! - Not going to help Princess choose the West Nest - I wish she would hurry UP and lay those eggs in there!! :-\

I see that four CT-155 training jets will conduct a flyby this time around! They're smaller and less powerful than the two CF-18 fighter jets, but I don't know how the noise level of four CT-155's will compare to the two CF-18's.
Too bad the street party celebrations are happening around our Pip and Princess.

The jets will blow by pretty quick - remember there are fireworks every summer that go on for more than an hour so its hard to know what they will pay attention to and what they won't. And Winnipeg really isn't that big - every pair is hearing the planes and likely they all are getting flown over - remember the planes have to fly around a bit while they are up there. So far everyone else is sticking to their nestsites and getting down to business - some just slower than others it seems but we can't say it is because of a few jet fighters making noise for a few seconds on a semi-regular basis at the moment. The peregrines will do what they wish, we just need to be patient to find out what it is going to be. Easier said than done I know!
PS - I had peregrines nest beside a church bell that rang every hour and every half hour during certain periods of the day. Didn't stop them from nesting or raising their young successfully there. And she had raised young before so she knew what she was supposed to be doing. They didn't nest there again, but they hadn't nested there before, so can't really say if that was because of the site, the noise or that the female kept attracting males she wasn't interested in. And then she didn't return. And Vesper - she spent her last winter hanging out at an airport - she wasn't nesting but the sound of the jet planes didn't deter her from hanging out there - and she did have other places to hang out!
To quote I'm not sure who or from where "what will be, will be" - we have peregrines in town - eggs no eggs, chicks no chicks, we have peregrines. Its a kind of stop and smell the roses kind of thing. ;D

You mentioned a lot of good points here, TPC, and your last paragraph was especially thought-provoking. Thank you.

Somebirdie on the West Nest now viewing the city and enjoying the sun. 8) - Wish it was Princess, making a smart choice but looks like Pip - very white breast. :-*

Yup. Got excited for a second, thinking it was Princess when I first opened up the cam. ???
I wonder where she is today...not scoping out the east ledge I hope! :-X

Yesterday there was a quick visit by Pip to the front edge of the nestbox, around 9 pm cam time, if I remember right. Then, this morning, there were at least four visits, and at least three of those visits included both the inside and the front edge of the nestbox ... nice to see some movement (besides traffic and pedestrians) on the cam. :)
-
Pip seems very keen on the 'Great Penthouse' location :D - unfortunately it's not up to him :-\ and Princess doesn't seem to hang around there very often. ::)
-
TPC. do you think we are hoping against hope that Princess will produce a nest this year? She is older and it is getting late.
-
TPC. do you think we are hoping against hope that Princess will produce a nest this year? She is older and it is getting late.
No actually. Faith and Hart have been here for weeks and aren’t on eggs yet (or are maybe just now) - and last year Princess produced healthy chicks - so hoping against hope? No. But it really is up to Princess. And we’ve had birds nest later than this so there is still hope. And I checked the east side ledge this am and no eggs there either

Yes, she's been on the eastside ledge and we can see him talking to her when she's on the wall above the nestbox (out of camera range)

Thanks TPC! Pip's being persistent and patient, so hopefully any day now... ;)

Thank you for sharing this good news of two birds talking in the box yesterday, pre-dawn. My fingers are crossed!

Pip is there again, surveying the kingdom. 8) - Princess nowhere to be seen.....or maybe she's busy INSIDE the box laying some eggs! :-* :P ;D

Susha, I totally agree!

Could Princess be saying I'm not putting up with that monkey business this year, I'm too old and tired !!

Pip sitting out in the rain this morning. - WHERE is Princess???? ::)................And he's still there 2 hours later!! I guess he likes getting wet. :o
-
...or he's being very patient ::)

Im starting to think Pip might have another partner in that box! He took food in earlier then brought some back out ::) Its like he's standing guard ... maybe a bachelor pad? lol

As I watch the Jets play and know how loud it is with fans outside, I pray Princess is thinking......what is that noise and waits until tomorrow to decide which nest is best. When it rained here for 2 days, I thought her memories would come "flooding" back. Princess, West is best!

Either way, wherever Princess wants to lay her eggs, is fine by me.
-
At this point in the nesting season I have to agree with you Allikat! Fortunately it looks like it could be (knock on wood) a drier spring - so far they have been correct -last week was our first rainfall and we were starting to blow away up here a la the Dust Bowl of the Dirty Thirties (and for our younger members - http://www.cbc.ca/history/EPISCONTENTSE1EP13CH1PA2LE.html) 😉
It would be nice to have her nesting but i’d Be okay just having her around this year.
-
Allikat’s Post prompted me to check the 14 day forecast - Thursday and Friday look to have rain again so guess it might be a question of timing if Princess really is near to laying ...
-
I hope wherever she chooses, that is a very successful year for them and the others.
-
too bad the Jets lost but at least now there won't be as much noise for them
-
I would also be okay with just having Princess around this year - eggs or no eggs, chicks or no chicks - our Princess is here. :)
-
Just before I sat down for dinner, Princess was sitting on the edge of the nestbox grooming ... Pip was sitting on the edge of the nestledge just hanging out. This pair is going to keep us guessing .... no eggs yet in either location.
-
Wow - a visit by Princess! ;D That's good to hear, TPC. Pip has been trying so exceptionally hard to attract her to the nestbox, so I'll be feeling very sorry for him if it doesn't work.
-

Seeing as how our Princess is a wild bird, a bit older, she may be harking back to her instincts to be out in the open. Either way, I wish her good luck at starting a family.
They really are keeping us guessing. ???
-
The Shaw cam is Live streaming again! ;D
;D
-
Dennis, I love your "Princess Portrait" photo. She is so beautiful! And I can see how Pip is keeping a check on things. Thank you.
-
Pip (I think) stopped by very briefly over 3 hours ago, and he seemed to have a lot to say (about something), so I'm not sure what that was about.
-
He's saying, 'Get your butt in here and lay some eggs Princess' !!! ;D
-
I've been finding it too hard on the eyes to see who's who on the cam, so it may be best that I stop guessing. Anyhow, some poor birdie has clearly been feeling the effects of the heat and is still at the nestbox.

A bird sitting on the nest edge this morning around 9:30am - come on guys, let's get going here~ :D
-
Wow!
I've been away from my calendar since April 12 and so knew that Princess had returned.
Six weeks later I find we are still in suspense over will she, won't she and, if she will, WHERE!
Whatever, and wherever, it is utterly fabulous that we have Princess back!
-
we had miss edmonton lay eggs end of may , beginning of June one year.
I remember this well as Peter and I were hiding out longweekend in July , watching her.
-
I think four eggs are enough for that nestbox (hope I'm wrong though).
Maybe you could ask if the Radisson pair could take one or two?!
We’re not being greedy, just sharing duties is all.... :P
I think we should think about stealing, er, I mean borrowing, and what I mean by borrowing is not returning these eggs... I won’t say anything, if you won’t TPC... :-X
Am not being selfish, just helping out the Peregrine Falcon Population... :-\
-
I haven't noticed Pip or Princess on cam in the past four hours, though cannot see what's happening on the east ledge and kind of getting a feeling that eggs are near or already here. But yesterday it was hot and humid in Winnipeg, which is very hard on Princess.
Two pigeons were checking out the box!
-
Bah - Do not want news of eggs on East Ledge..... :-\ - Just sayin'. :P
-
For me and I'm sure many others are sadly reminded of the tragedies of nesting on the East ledge. Severe rainstorms ended the nesting season in both 2008 and 2015. Chicks drowned in 2008 and eggs destroyed by flooding in 2015. Princess, I'll say it again.....West is best! :'( :'( :'(
-
Yes and there was another time a few years ago on the East Ledge - I think only one chick had hatched so far and there was 2 solid days of pounding rain, so heavy and constant that Princess couldn't get off the chick for long enough to feed him/her. - It was heart breaking watching her. - That chick did not make it, though if I remember correctly, the 2 unhatched eggs did survive and hatch after that. - Anyway - it's just not the preferred spot, my heart can't take the stress of all the hazards that nest brings. - So fingers and toes crossed, if we have eggs coming they will be in the lovely 'high & dry' West Nest!! ;D ;D
-
The ledge isn't my preferred spot either, but it does have some good points, its a big space which is kind of nice for the chicks and because it is on the east side, never have to worry the chicks are getting warmer than I'd like them to. Downside is that the ledge isn't accessible (and all that means) and it is so low. Fortunately the proposed SkyCity building isn't built yet - when (if) it is then it will be much more enclosed for the chicks when they fledge. And we have had some success off this ledge - Trey was a ledge baby, as was Ty ...
At this point, I'd just like to get a text from Pip & Princess telling me that they've changed their minds and are going to give it a pass this year ... ::)

That might be Princess on the cam right now! If so, she's looking quite comfortable and relaxed today. :)

What wonderful news it was when Pip and Princess survived migration and arrived back home with their hope for a family! So I expect it will be sad for them if that doesn't happen.
-
Just saw one of them - not sure which - land on the west ledge, then soar off a couple minutes later into the sky - was lovely to see!! :)

I am also glad that they're back. With the cold and then the heat, their hormones may not know what to do.

Yes, I believe many birds are having difficulties this year.
-
Somebirdie, probably Pip, was sitting on the edge of the nestbox for close to 3 hrs last night, which reminded me of my friend Smiley who used to spend a lot of his time there (at night).
And I'm pretty sure that Pip was recently there, then about two minutes after he left, Princess arrived! ... okay, so she left, then Pip arrived again and also left ... and I need to get going too! ;D
-
something funny happened to me today.... in a glass reflection I saw a big hawk or falcon flying, I got so excited until I realized it was a kite on one of the lower downtown roofs. So disappointed when I realized I was fooled by a guy with a kite.
-
I'm not expecting much activity today as it's very hot and humid in Winnipeg; however, we're also under a severe thunderstorm watch, so somebirdie may wish to take shelter inside the box.
-
This is not just a change in behavior with our falcons this year, I have not seen one robin. In fact, except for crows and geese, I have not seen any birds. ???
-

In Southdale with our man made lakes, I saw a pelican 3 weeks ago, and plenty of waterfowl. This morning, I saw a pair of geese with a ton of little goslings swimming around the lake. The city usually finds the nest and takes away the eggs but there is always one or two sneaky birds who manage to hide well.
When I saw the babies, I thought of our pair who haven't even laid an egg :'(
Bless them anyway, and hope for the best.
-
never give up. a nest in Lincoln that should have young hatching right now, just laid two eggs.
one never knows.
-
Come to think of it, neither have I seen a robin this year, whereas in previous years there were usually quite a few in my yard. But it has been too dry for them to reach their food. :( Maybe they'll still come if we continue to get rain, I hope.
-
So far we've had some rain and thunder but nothing serious. Somebirdie stopped by for a short visit and left at least 45 minutes ago.
-
:-*
I am up fairly early, so this is from early this morning. Princess arrived first and then Pip then they both went into the nest box. They were in there for a bit and he left. She came out and perched for a while and then left.

I won't be able to stay around here much today, but I'm happy to see there were lots of comings and goings.
They were also inside the box - together - several times today! :)
I'd love to actually see what they're up to in there.
-
Very heavy rain again. Our street is flooded. I'm curious to know if the East ledge is flooded as it often is in these heavy rains. TPC?
-
I'd think with the rain that's teeming down now, the drain wouldn't be able to handle it - sure HOPE there are no eggs on that dang ledge!!! :(

Thank you, ballywing! I think you are right. I did see the lighter feathers on the head. I have seen so little of either bird this year that it makes it hard to be sure.

Somebirdie sitting on the ledge. Thinking, no hoping it is Princess.
-
I see there have been meetings going on between Pip and Princess again today! One meeting happened about 3:25 pm. Princess was sitting on the box edge when Pip arrived - then they met inside the box! ;D Pip left first, then Princess came out and nibbled on stones.
And at 5:18 pm Pip brought prey for Princess! :)
-
Wow!! - It's so great they're here and our Princess is back and all is well ;D .....sure would be nice to have an egg or 2 show up, not sure if it's getting too late for that. ??? -
-
Thought I would check in to see if anybirdie is sitting pretty. Yes! Thinking it may be Princess sitting there in the breeze. I'm wondering if the Jets whiteout parties threw them off their "game?" ???
-
Wow, you're up in the middle of the night GCG! :o ;D - I don't know - Did they just 'Decide' not to have kiddies this year, or does it just randomly not 'Happen'? - It'll be a nice relaxing season for them if they don't - but kind of boring for us 'watchers'. :-\
-
Wow, you're up in the middle of the night GCG! :o ;
Very light sleeper. Sometimes when I roll over, I wake and cannot get back to sleep.
TPC, can we still hope for eggs and chicks?

TPC, can we still hope for eggs and chicks?
A week ago I'd have said the chances were slim but there has been a significant upswing in activity in the nestbox by Pip and Princess over the last few days and almost no visits on the east side by Pip and nothing from Princess. Could be the start of something wonderful, will just have to wait and see. We only see a small fraction of their lives, could be that Princess had a set-to with Faith or Spencer both of whom where causing chaos at about the time when we expected to see eggs at Logan and Radisson. Unless Princess decides to text me about it, no way to know I'm afraid. ;)

That would be Pip - he's more solidly "black" on the back ...
-
One sitting on the edge of the nest box. I wonder what they are thinking. hardly any movement of cars... maybe enjoying the calmness :)
-
lol no sooner I type it in then seconds later...poof gone..lol
-
Have they laid any eggs as of yet or is it to late in the season for them to start laying eggs?
-
Early Friday evening, one of them was sitting on a letter of 'Radisson' and started screeching at some smaller birds flying by, then took flight and chased them away - they scattered pretty quick!! ;D
-
I have seen Princess numerous times today. In fact, she is there now. I think I saw Pip only once today. Puzzling! ::)
-
Princess is there now, preening. ;D :-* - Wish we could switch back & forth to the 'inside' view to check for eggs! 8)
-
I'm sure TPC will let us know if/when she sees an egg - she knows how eager we all are ;D

Princess has again been sitting on the ledge for at least 2 hours. Lots of preening and at times calling out at....? Thus far no signs of meals enjoyed al fresco. They say that patience is a virtue. ::)

On occasion, she comes and goes or goes in or out?????????????

:) Almost every time I check in, Princess is sitting on the ledge preening. Hoping TPC will have an update for us soon. ;D

I love that picture - photosbydennis! Thanks for posting

That's a rather penetrating - you're in my space - kinda look!
Although, I sometimes wonder if these birds are able to read our minds ... maybe she knew that you had no intent to harm her.
-
Princess should know Dennis by now! ;D :P
-
Just before five p.m. Princess and Pip were bonding in the box, then he left. I couldn't see her in there except for a glimpse of a tail. Nine minutes after Pip left he was back with a gift for her, she took it and left. :-*

Princess should know that Dennis and TPC have never brought them any harm, but that was quite the glare!! Perhaps she's concerned about the strange looking equipment Dennis carries around and often points at them. ;D
-
With all the nest visits, they seem to be making themselves quite at home. - You would THINK that means there may be some eggs in there - or about to be in there!!?? ??? ;D

Any updates to share TPC? ???

Any updates to share TPC? ???
No idea what will happen here. As time ticks along I think they won't nest then, like today, they bounce in an out of the nest all day and evening. Today Princess spent more than an hour in the nestbox hoovering and playing with the scrapes. Pip did the same thing when Princess was away from the box. Does that mean anything? Who knows at this point ... might be just going through the hormonal motions or maybe they will surprise us all. Tonight Princess is parked on the edge of the nestbox sound asleep, head under wing.

They're really keeping us in suspense, which is actually quite interesting ... though also a good chance for a break. :)
-
talk about keeping us guessing ::)
-
No kidding - ::) - Just as we're about to give up on chicks for these 2, they start acting like there's lots of action going on in the nest! - I wonder how late is 'too late' for this year. ???

:-\ I'm beginning to lose hope that there will be eggs/chicks this season. :'(
-
Wow, somebirdie (Pip)? has been sitting on the edge of the nest all afternoon! 8) .....oops never mind, my screen was stuck on 4 hours ago for some reason. :-[
-
Can't help but think if there were chicks on the East Ledge last night, they woulda been toast. - Yikes. :o
-
I agree, Bally! Was thinking the same thing as the water poured down and the wind blew like crazy. It's nice for Princess to have time-off, I think. Lovely of her to return to the city where she's successfully raised so many healthy offspring and just fly around, eating and preening and playing with Pip. :-* :-*
-
Yup, I miss having the chicks to watch all summer :-\ , but maybe Princess has officially retired from all that business - she sure deserves a break. I guess we'll see what happens / who shows up next year. 8)

Nice for them to have adult time with no demanding kids around! Princess definitely deserves the break :-*

we have seen pairs, where female is older, be together for a quite a few years, without chicks. and everyone loved them just the same. :-*sometimes they are both in their sunset years.

Looks like Princess is hanging out in the sunny nestbox this afternoon. ;D

I wanted to see if there was anybirdie at the nestbox ledge but it says the live stream recording is not available. Has Shaw cut us off for the season, TPC? :( :'(

Haven’t heard anything ... might just need to be rebooted.
Will contact Shaw and see what’s up and get back to you all!

It is disappointing that the cam is down; I feel that I have hardly seen the birds this year. I hope the cam will be back, at least for a little longer.

The Shaw folks did check out the streaming and got it going, but when I checked at 8pm it was down again. Have sent them and email with messages both from the Shaw website and the YouTube page so they will have them waiting for them first thing in the morning!

Peeking Pip??
Pip (if it’s him) probably spotted something he found very interesting on the other side of that window he likes to visit. He reminds me of Smiley who was also seen peeking through windows! :) Smiley seemed particularly interested in visiting a cat named Bijoux and those visits began even before he and Princess became a pair.
Hope we’ll learn more about “Peeking Pip??” ;D
-
Really glad we got to see some of our Princess and her young beau this season - but disappointed they didn't do the 'family' thing this year. :-\ - Princess may be done with all that business now, and though I sure hope to see her again, it seems like the best nest site in town is going to waste - wonder if someone else will take it over. (Not 'til she stops coming to town I'm guessing) :P

How old is Princess now, TPC? And when do Peregrines stop procreating? I'm sure you have answered this many times but I don't know how to go back and find out.

Peregrines stop producing eggs when they do - no set age limit. There are older birds that have produced viable eggs and younger birds that have stopped producing all together.
Princess was hatched in Minneapolis in 2002, so as of this year, she is 16 years old. Last year she produced 3 healthy chicks with seemingly little difficulty, but she doesn't really confide in me so we will have to see if she returns in the future or decides to take a leisurely retirement out of the reach of amorous young peregrines and their desire to procreate. ;)
-
thanks, I was wondering when they quit having babies.

Thanks so much for the info TPC! :)

I think that is Princess relaxing on the edge of the nestbox. She’s been there about 20 minutes, but possibly much longer - nice to see her again.
-
Princess was enjoying the shade on the northwest corner of the nestbox this morning. I spotted her about 11:50 am, but I think she had been sitting there awhile. She left at 12:26 am.

Hope our birds find places to cool down as Environment Canada is predicting a high of 38°C today, though I think the wind will be helpful. Yesterday, some areas in Manitoba broke heat records.

Didn’t see anyone anywhere yesterday but have seen a couple today lounging at the Radisson and at West Winnipeg. Pip I think at Radisson and I’m not sure who at West Winnipeg they were tucked down too much to be sure.

Thankfully the temperatures dropped significantly since Sunday. Thank you for checking on them.

Pretty sure I just saw a peregrine soaring outside my office window on Broadway. ;D - It's been a quiet year for watching our birdies, but still look out for sightings. - Often see somebirdie on the west nest ledge just chilling. 8) :-*

Saw her last on Friday the 28th at/in the nestbox at the Radisson. Pip is still around so it is entirely possible she is too.
