Well, it was the right size, the right shape, and the right colouring for a peregrine. I am almost certain that I saw one on the top of the CanadInns at 4:00 pm today. But, as I didn't have my binos with me, I am not going to say I am positive.
Guess where I am going tomorrow afternoon?
;D ;D ;D
-
It's getting close to that time ... it could have been one........
-
Do let me know what you see ... the Brandon gang will be thrilled to hear when the birds are back!
-
I've been watching everyday for our falcon friends. I work one block south of the Mckenzie building. I am always disappointed to see the roof covered with pigeons, but probably not for long. As soon as the falcons return they will have to find somewhere else to roost. Rose asks me everyday if I have seen them yet. So far the answer is not yet. :( I may have recruited a co-worker, she's been trying to find her binoculars 8)
-
Keep us posted, Rapidcity and Birdlover! :D
-
Well, I saw a Merlin today. So, does that mean another three weeks before we see the Peregrines back?

Hey BirdLover,
Is that like groundhog day, ;D you know six more weeks of winter. :)
I just keep seeing pigeons on the Mckenzie building no falcons yet. I did see a bald eagle on thursday in Rapid City, so hopefully our falcons will be back soon. :)

Merlins sound promising, BirdLover! :D

Question for Tracy, Do you know, when roughly the Brandon Peregrines usually return in the spring or when they have returned in the past? I have been looking everyday and have been checking all their little stash spots (the S on the scotia bank building and the spot under the black/green ledge). So far I have not seen any. :(
-
Any time now RCF - they usually nest a week behind the Radisson bird but no real worries if they don't return right away. The Fargo birds usually nest a month before our birds and the pair were just reunited late last week/early this week, so we still have lots of time. By the end of April I would be concerned that no one was coming back ... does that help?

Yes, Thank you Tracy, but I sure hope they return soon, getting anxious ::) Maybe a little jealous because they are back in Winnipeg.

Hang in there, Rapidcity, Rose and BirdLover! ;)
-
Will have to leave Peregrine spotting up to Rose and RCMF as I am away for Spring Break. Hope to see the kids when I get back. Y'all have a great weekend!
:D

Falcon alert! Just back from parkade (rbc phoned and told me to get my butt down there PDQ) One very pretty bird on the mts tower preening herself, I say she because this falcon looked to be a good size,so don't think it was Hurricane and not silvery like Zeus.So who might it be? If we had better binocs might have been able to read the bands because she lifted her legs to clean them. Then she flew off to the south. Will check back later today.
-
As long as it's not Trey, sightseeing around the province rather than showing up here in Winnipeg! Great way to get the day started, Rose -- and it's good to hear that somebody's back in Brandon.
-
Thanks Rose, I'll let our folks in Brandon know and maybe they can help out with an ID!
-
Yes I have my instructions to call Rose when I spotted the falcons this spring ;). I thought I saw one yesterday soaring off to the north and I didn't have binos so I wasn't too sure. Today there was one perched on the mts tower, so off I went to the parkade. I also believe its not Zeus or Hurricane, maybe its Holly, but I have never seen Holly. She was preening and showing off her legs and had that pinkish/salmony color on her breast, very pretty bird. She flew off about five minutes after Rose got up to the parkade. We were both happy to see that somebody was home. ;D
-
Very exciting news, Rose and RCF... now just have to wait for ID. Keep us posted! :D

If you should get close enough to see a band, here's how to break it down.
1. There should be two bands, one on each leg. One will be the USFWS/CWS band (silver in Canada, purple/red-purple in the US Midwest) the other is a coloured ID band and there are four colour combinations - black, red, black over green and black over red. Manitoba has only used the black (wild-hatched) and red (captive-bred) bands. Other jurisdicutions use the bi-coloured bands. If you can see which leg has which coloured band, that can be a great place to start.
2. If you see the USFWS/CWS aluminium band, don't bother trying to read the number they are embosed so it virtually impossible to read all 9 digits.
3. If you can see the coloured band, first note the colour(s), on the bicolours, which colour is at the top, which one is on the bottom.
4. The numbers/letters on the coloured band are in white, but on older birds, the white has worn off some so it may get difficult to read. They can also be vertical or horizontal on the band and on some bands there will be a white line between the digits.
Best way to start is just to look and pay attention to the shapes of the digits/letters. The band is attached using rivets so there will be a vertical "seam" and sometimes it is hard to tell what's a digit/letter and what is the seam. So look for shapes, parts of shapes -best to draw (rather than write) them. Bands can get put on upside down so a horizontal shape may not look like an R or a K and upside down vertical numbers can drive you crazy trying to identify them. With a shape and the colours, we can potentially narrow down the field some and then you can start "looking" for specific letters or numbers. Keep in mind, that generally you only have a series of split seconds when you will "see" the band number itself, so if you just try to remember rather than read, I have found its easier and more successful.
Given the height of the buildings around the McKenzie Seeds Building, yes it is possible on some of them to get a look at the band number using just binoculars. Not easy, but possible :)
-
Things are getting exciting over here! Let us know who's back!
-
Thank you Tracy, That's good information to know for us ( Falcon ID for Dummies) ;D
-
OK, RCF and Rose... Start identifying! LOL! ;)
-
reading the posts from winnipeg sounds like you are having as much luck as Brandon. Was down on the parkade earlier, saw lots of geese,ducks,2 bald eagles,4 crows, a smorgasbord of flying rats and 1 merlin but not a glimpse of a falcon. Better luck tomorrow I hope :(
-
Guess it could have been Donna passing through her hometown yesterday on her way back out to Saskatoon ... ???
-
As of 11:00am april 1st still no falcons to be seen but very few pigeons either may be they know something we don't? ::)
-
Like TPC's toads that disappeared before the Aquila earthquake, perhaps the pigeons sense vibrations, in their case, of the powerful falcon's wings flying home.

I'll second that, bcbird! ;)

RCF here on Rose's computer, We have a falcon perched on the east light of the clock tower. We think it might be Hurricane, not as big as the falcon we saw a week ago. We watched her chase the pigeons off the Mckenzie building twice and back to perching on the east light. The east light was where Hurricane usually perched last year after the kids fledged. I will be checking later before I go home. :)
-
Well now....isn't this exciting. It sounds like Hurricane is back in town!

"Ditto"
-
Our falcon friend was still perched on the east light around 7pm and not one pigeon to be seen on the Mckenzie building ;D.
-
If it is Hurricane, hope she's been vacationing with her Dad ... ;)
-
Rose and I don't believe it is Zeus. The falcon that is there has a very dark breast and Rose thought she could see kind of a brown color on top of its head. Isn't Zues's breast very white and have dark silvery feathers on his back? Whoever it is, I hope they find a mate and have babies. :)
-
Just got home from the parkade, same bird sitting on the east light Mckenzie tower (same place as yesterday) almost as if she is glued in place. No other falcon around that I could see.
-
falcon still sitting on tower light facing south he/she keeps looking around and stretching and preening. no sign of any other birdie except the flying buffet. Just when I was leaving he/ she flew off, may be it was lunch time? Didn't look like she was going too far,I watched her until she was just a speck above the tower. it was pretty windy up on parkade and I kept having to wipe the tears from my eyes so I came home. The price of getting old I guess ::)
-
Now that you have the bird, it is time to work on your "does it have a leg band" skills ;D
-
Good advice tpc but first a few conditions have to be met. 1. very little wind 2. steady arm 3.birdie must come down a little from her high perch(mts mast would be good). As to the high perch my daughter(rcf) phoned to tell me our falcon has now moved to the roof of the Mckenzie building just below the clock tower another favorite spot of Hurricane's.So I'm off in a little while to check it out. ;D
-
birdie was sitting in nest box just watching the world go by,got a good look at her front, well barred and fairly high up, his/ her breast is a muted white not brilliant like Zeus and Treys and the mallar patches seem well defined and very black. after a little while (time rushes by when you are having fun) he /she started to be very vocal and moved to the perch bar, flew to the south east and disappeared, couldn't see because of looking into the sun. When I finally located he/she I noticed 3 raptors very high couldn't really tell what they were, then I lost them all because of the sun. RCF will likely check at noon
-
Okay, Rose and RCF, keep an eye on the peregrine out there for us. I know that you'll probably have him/her identified before too long. And if it happens to be Trey, tell him to get back to his "Princess", who is waiting on her throne in Winnipeg! ;)
-
At 5pm today I was up on the parkade checking out the falcon, was perched on the east light facing north. I was only there five minutes and she flew off towards the north east. I was looking around the sky staight up with binos and saw four raptors, one was a peregrine and one an eagle but I couldn't tell what the other two were, too far away. Maybe, hopefully there was a second peregrine. :)
-
Left early this morning so I could stop at the parcade for a few minutes before work. Falcon was perched on west light of clock tower, just hanging out. Some lady came over to ask me if I was watching the falcons. I missed the falcon flying off the light, but then I saw scattering pigeons just north of McKenzie Building and behind them came the falcon with breakfast in his/her talons. He/she perched on southwest corner of roof to have breakfast. Still only saw one falcon today, maybe tommorrow. :)
-
Really do apreciate all of your peregrine reports, RCF and Rose! :)
-
back from parkade no birdie in sight, but lots of flying rats today. :(
-
back from parkade no birdie in sight, but lots of flying rats today. :(
Birdie was on south light at 8:30 this morning and on north light at 5:00pm, still only one there that I could see.
-
I am a bit "slow" on this blog at times but would I be correct in guessing that "flying rats" are the pigeons? ::)
-
Was downtown at 7:50 PM yesterday and the birdie was sitting exactly where you wanted it to be Rose, on the MTS tower. ;D
No other birdies in sight except for the flying rats (yes, Ellie, winged KD or pigeons :P)
Oh, and our resident Robin is standing watch again this year! ;)
-
Got a report from other Brandon spotters - "male" spotted on April 3rd and "female" spotted on April 4th. Given that last year's female is the size of a male, very likely the same bird but who knows ....
-
Yay!!! :)
-
Why would anyone call pigeons flying rats? Pigeons are gentle birds that have managed to survive the onslaught of humanity in ever-larger cities, plus they don't have a mean bone in their bodies. And rats are clever rodents that have been used by humans in countless experiments to better our lives. The derogatory term flying rats does not seem right for either species.
-
Welcome back Birdlover! We can use your expertise, this lovely birdie wouldn't come down low enough to show her legs, the lowest I've seen her/him is the nest box and that's a long way from the parkade so you were lucky to see him/her on the tower. Rcf is convinced its Hurricane because of where it perches and general appearance, it is definitly not Zeus.
-
Of course, guess who didn't have their binocs with them ::)
-
If there are two falcons here, I have not seen both together yet. :(
-
Here's hoping that if there are two birdies that they'll make an appearance together today.
Thank you for all the updates.
-

Thank you for all the updates.
I really hope so too. :)
-
well today there were no Birdies any place on Mckenzies or flying( as far as I could see) but it's pretty windy so hope any body around is hunkered down.
-
I saw the birdie this morning, perched at bottom of clock tower. She flew off the ledge and perched on the S of the Scotia Bank building, but only for a few minutes and then was off to chase pigeons. Like Rose said, it is very very windy here, gusting up to 60kmh so birdie will probably be somewhere out of the wind.
-
was down to parkade at noon,a falcon was sitting on south east roof corner Mckenzie building, looked to be a different bird than we have been seeing since february 2nd she was eating dinner,no other bird around so I went home.RCF called about 1pm she said there was a falcon sitting in the nest box so back I went. THe falcon was still sitting there. We watched for a while (we were in a parking lot north side of Pacific) and then went up to the parkade, Falcon still in nest box and we then spotted another falcon sitting on mts tower. This one was very sleek and neat, very white breast and silvery grey back, also a lot smaller than bird sitting in nest box. He sat there just looking like he owned the place and finally flew to decoative ledge and proceeded to pluck a bird (feathers looked like a gull) the other falcon continued to sit in the nest box and would disappear inside at times and I'll leave the rest of the story for rcf cause she's going to check again before she goes home. Falcon was still in nest box when we left.
-
Yes, we have two falcons here. 8) On Saturday I thought I saw one in the nestbox and one chasing pigeons. By the time I got up to parkade, I only saw one having dinner on the southeast corner of roof. I had to go to Brandon today because I was just too curious to wait until monday ::). I parked just northeast of Mckenzie bldg and sure enough there was a falcon in nestbox. I believe this is not the same falcon (supposedly Hurricane) we have been seeing for the past week and a half. Rose and I were watching from parkade and finally saw second falcon perched on MTS tower (think it's Zeus). The falcon in nestbox is very much larger than the other one on MTS tower. We also may have or had a bit of drama because while these two falcons were perched, we saw a third falcon circling to the east. Maybe its Zeus and Holly and Hurricane was chased off. ??? The falcon in the nestbox pretty much stayed there for the two hours I was watching. Her back feathers were kind of gray silvery and she had a very dark cap, much larger than who we think was Hurricane.
-
Tracy, is there anyone out here in Brandon that is able to identify our falcons, because our binos are just not powerful enough to see?

oops I meant to say april 2nd
-
Thanks for the updates, Rose and RCF! :D Very interesting... now all we need is for them to be identified! :-\
-
The Brandon gang know about the peregrines, were by to seem them last week and I'm sure we will get an id pretty soon! But don't give up trying with the binocs, colours on bands and which leg are great assistance ... helps to narrow down what we should be looking at! For example, both Zeus and Hurricane will have black bands - if one of the birds there now has a different colour, we know we have new birds and we should probably keep an eye out for old birds returning and passing through. So keep up the great work, I know its a terrible hardship to keep an eye on such unattractive and clumsy birds ;) :D
-
I know its a terrible hardship to keep an eye on such unattractive and clumsy birds ;) :D
The hard part is I have to work and they are one block away, but always checking on breaks and lunch time :)
-
Just home from parkade (Icy winds today brrr),no falcons any place, I was going back toward the car when I saw a falcon circling to the north so I went to the west side and there were 2 flying together, they circled the tower a couple of times and one lit on the west light and one went around to the north light.I waited a few more mins. they seemed like they weren't going any place and it was really cold so I came home.Yes tpc I know to check colour of band and which leg it's on but these little beauties aren't very cooperative. What we need you to do is to clone Dennis and send him(clone) to Brandon. rcf and I always go home and check Dennis's photos to see if we can spot anything that is similar with the bird we have just seen. ;D ;)
-
Ah, now I know you have been assimilated ;D
Oh, and talking about leg bands, Carly sent me a link to a photo of a returning peregrine (somewhere in the States, don't remember right now - sorry) and it turned out to be a bird banded last year. That part isn't the neatest though, the bird still had the coloured tape on its aluminium band!!! Honestly didn't think it would last through a whole winter but it in fact looked like it had been put on the day before, not a couple months shy of a year ago!!
So keep an eye on those bands, you just never know what you might find!
-
we did say resistance is futile.. muhahahahaha ;D
-
At lunchtime I went out to 9th street to see if I could get a glimpse of birdies. Saw pigeons flying towards north above me and I looked behind them and saw falcon flying low right down middle of street (below street light level) with lunch in talons. 8) ;D Flew to northwest of McK bldg ledge. A minute later I saw another falcon leave nestbox chasing pigeons, while I was there it didn't have any luck and went to northwest ledge. At 5pm I drove to west side of building in back lane, birdie was perched on west ledge. While I was watching, a very large raptor was circling above. Whoever was perched on ledge was voicing their displeasure. :)
-
Today I went to the north side of MTS tower building (hotel parking lot) because falcon was perched up on post. I have a fairly close view, thought I could see green on her left leg. She stayed for quite a while and I took a couple of pictures http://www2.snapfish.com/thumbnailshare/AlbumID=2078047021/a=1352593021_1352593021/otsc=SHR/otsi=SALBlink/COBRAND_NAME=snapfish/ (http://www2.snapfish.com/thumbnailshare/AlbumID=2078047021/a=1352593021_1352593021/otsc=SHR/otsi=SALBlink/COBRAND_NAME=snapfish/) This was the best one with my little camera. She left and a minute later two falcons were circling around the tower, they both landed and I saw what Tracy and Bccs call canoodling :o ::) So I'm thinking, gonna be eggs in the future. ;D

I am so excited for you that you have 2 falcons back. :-* :-* Hopefully no drama

Downtown last evening about 6:30. One sitting on the nest box and the other on the northeast corner at the base of the clock tower. The one on the nest box had a brilliant white bib. Passed by again around 8 and only saw the one on the corner of the building.
-
Oh how I wish we had an I.D. on these two! :) Anytime soon? ???

Oh how I wish we had an I.D. on these two! :) Anytime soon? ???
soon ! soon ! Stranger from the big city has been working on it but pretty birdies haven't been any more cooperative for her than for us ;D at noon male was on s of the scotia tower and female was on top east light of mckenzie tower too far away and staying put. ::)
-
I took a photo of birdie on S at Scotia Bank building today at noon.

LOL, Rose! ;D
-
Female in Brandon doesn't look to be Hurricane, male does look alot like Zeus though. The female seemed too large, but I don't know her as well as Rose & RCF.
I really don't know who the female is - thought I saw a silver band on her left leg - Holly has a purple anondized aluminium band on her right leg and her black over green band on her left. May have been the light and the split second I had to look at it but I would say its someone other than Holly but no idea who until I see that darn band. Breast looked too barred for Holly (based on Dennis' 2008 photos) so I really don't know ... yet ....
... would be fun if it was one of Hurricane's siblings ....
-
Just got home and saw your post,at first there were no birds to be seen so I walked around the 2 or 3 blocks near the building checked all sides,no birds. Went back to the parkade and was getting into the car and noticed the two falcons flying in from the north the larger one settled onto a mast on the mts tower but I still couldn't see the bands only yellow feet. Rcf usually checks that mast from the parking lot to the east and may be she can get a picture even if it just shows colors. that's about as close as you can get to the birdie. The other day when we saw these two birds, they were fairly close together their backs looked to be the same colour ( light slate). Hurricane is much darker and by Dennis's photos always looks a little grumpy(just my impression). I guess because she has such a black head and malar stripes. THe other falcon circled around and flew off towards the discovery centre(yum yum ducks and shore birds). ::) So I guess we just keep trying.
do you suppose this might be the falcon we saw about a week before any one else showed up? we only saw it the one afternoon and never saw it again
-
No idea Rose, and there really is no way to know without leg band ids I'm afraid ...
Not too worry though, we will get the band numbers soon enough and we will go from there. In the meantime, enjoy the hunt/adventure!!!
-
About 8:15 this morning the male was perched on north light and he was preening and showing off his legs ::). I can't see close enough with my binocs. The female was perched on east light sunning herself. At lunch I went down to 9th and Rosser half a block from McK bldg. At first I thought I wasn't going to see any birds and then I heard a falcon cacking and I looked up and here were two falcons flying overhead. She was hot on his tail feathers just a yelling at him :o he had prey in his talons and they flew around the MTS tower, then they both went into the nestbox. I heard cacking and chupping for about minute or so and then he flew to the MTS tower, she left the nest a few minutes later and I had to go back to work.
-

Yes, it would! ;D

Yes, it would! ;D
and Hurricanes sibblings would be 1.Chinook male and 2. Mistral (misty) female ?
-
Yes they would be Rose ... though not sure if Chinook is a male since s/he was the same size as Hurricane and Taku at banding age, and both of them turned out to be females!!
-
The male here definitely has a black band on his right leg, couldn't see numbers. Rose got new binoculars and they work pretty good. We did see both falcons go into nest box and we heard them chupping.(sweet nuthins) :-* He flew away and she did a lot of furniture moving for about five minutes, then she left and he went and rearranged whatever she did. ::) We wondered where she went because she flew to north side of building, so went down to the street trying to see if she was on north light. Nope, not there. I did finally spot her, she was on a window ledge in between the two connecting buildings about seven stories up. ;D

-
Excellent RCF & Rose! Zeus does have a black band on his right leg so that jives - and so far, so good!!!
-
Yes! Excellent, Rose and RCF! ;D
-
Good news......keep up the good work RCF and Rose! :) ;D
-
We went to backlane on west side to see if she would stand up so we could see her legs because it's closer. She was keeping an eye on us and of course when she did stand up, she flew away. I think we disturbed her nap ::)
-
We will keep trying, the best place to see her legs is the parking lot on the north side of MTS mast where she sometimes perches. :)
-
Rcf didn't say but we must have spent 2 hours all over downtown, when the female flew off the nest the last time we thought she had gone north, that,s when we decided to do a walkabout and there she was on the window ledge, seemed like she was having a nap after all that activity in the nest. We watched her a long time, hoping she would stand up because we could see her quite well. Could even see her eye(that was toward us) and her beak. Bars on her front seem to go fairly high and her bib doesn't seem as white as the male but her back seems the same colur as the male. She was sitting so we couldn't see any of her feet and legs and when she flew off we weren't quick enough to see her bands.Question for tpc does any one top up the gravel in the nest box and check it for safety? The one on the raddison seems so pristine .
-
The Radisson gravel is pristine because it is, we changed it just a couple of weeks before the photo was taken. As for the Brandon box, last time I looked inside, it was good shape. And keep in mind that the cold of winter does help to clean things up by dessicating whatever is there and then the winds blow stuff out.
-
Tracy, Would you know if there would ever be a webcam for our Brandon peregrines?
-
Its a nice idea RCF and we are looking into it but keep in mind that these things are very expensive - for every page viewed there is a charge, and a million page views a month last year on the CBC/Shaw FalconCam, so the answer is its a very (very) expensive project.
But we would like one too and we are working on it. Will let y'all know if we get anywhere on it.
-

Wow! Do you actually mean that every time I and other Phanatics view a page on the Forum, there is a charge?! ??? Is this charge to the Recovery Project?! ??? Maybe I should not be viewing pages so much?! ???
-

For the forum, blog and online store, that's on our website, but don't worry, we have that covered just fine. The photos are on the pbase.com website because they handle photos better and cheaper than adding them to the Project's website directly. As for the webcam, there is no charge to the Project.
This is a very simplified description of how this works ... when you have a website, you pay for the space to store your webpages and whatever else you have (blog, photos, etc). You also pay for a certain amount of traffic to your website, not individual people or page views or time but rather the electronic version of all of the above - its usually (perhaps always) a set amount of traffic per month and if you go over it you pay more per - like going over on your cellphone account. In the case of the webcam, CBC Manitoba and Shaw are absorbing all the costs for your visits to the webcam.
So please be sure to thank CBC Manitoba and Shaw if you have the opportunity or wish to make the opportunity. Given the popularity of the FalconCam we most certainly could not share the peregrines with anyone!

Whew! Thanks for this info, TPC! ;)

I was talking to a fellow today while I was trying to see bands on the female, he told me he saw one of the falcons catch a pigeon in the parking lot beside the MTS mast. He said the band on its leg was red, so this is just heresay. Are there any falcons with red leg bands? ??? And our Miss Priss here wasn't cooperating again. ::)
-
I think it's common for all peregrines around the globe!
I guess they just don't want to show any leg!

Yes, there are some captive-bred birds with red leg bands, but there really aren't that many around any more. But before you panic, most of the Midwest birds now have a purple (though it looks red) aluminium band on their "other" leg. So y'all need to look at both legs to see what colour is where. To see what I mean, check out Dennis' photos from the Brandon banding in 2008, Holly's purple/red aluminium band is very visible along with her coloured (black over green) band on the other leg.
-
Thanks Tracy, I'll keep looking. She is usually in the right place for me to see, but facing wrong direction. ::)
-
How are your "Birdies"? Miss the daily news. ;D
-
Today I was a block east of the nest box, you can see it from the front view. Our girlie was perched on the edge of it and I was trying to see her bands, not having any luck. As I was watching her, the male flew into the box and perched on the edge. He bowed to her and then she bowed to him, they were also echupping to each other. She flew over to the MTS mast and he stayed at the nestbox. Of course she wasn't facing the direction that I could see. ::) My view is either blocked by buildings or its too far away to see bands. I do notice she has been spending alot of time at the nestbox in the last couple of days.
Tracy, Do the falcons do their mating rituals (bowing etc) for each egg that is laid?
-
Bowing and echupping to each other! Sounds like a very good thing, RCF! ;D Maybe eggs before too long? :-\ Hopefully some ID's before too long, as well :D!
-

I hope so too. Only thing with ID's I will only be able to see band colors. We need somebody with more powerfull binoculars . ;)
-
Just home from downtown, only saw one falcon (female) sitting on MTS tower. If other one was in nest box and lying down it can't be seen at least from anywhere that we can go. :(
-
Thanks Rose. Just keep watching. You will see them both.
-
I think my chances of seeing our lady peregrine's band have got slimmer, because she's been laying in the nestbox. I can just see her head and back from the parkade. Maybe she is incubating, I really hope so. 8) ;D

Incubating? Wouldn't that be nice! :D Would be nice to have ID's, though. However, I know that you are all doing your best over there! ;)

Rose and I are pretty sure the male is Zeus and we think the female might be Holly, since they both seem to be very familiar with the area and I know we can't be sure until they are positively ID'd. I don't know if there is anyone here in Brandon with proper equipment for that. I see the falcons morning , noon and evening, I have never seen anyone else watching them, except for TPC being here a week ago. So, yes it would be nice to have ID's. :)
-
It will be so exciting if this pair is in fact Zeus and Holly!
Don't ya'll wish it was easier to get an ID? ::)
-
I can say today our peregrines are not incubating eggs yet, but she could have been in egg laying mode. :) Nobody laying in nestbox today, he was perched on edge of nest and she was on MTS tower. I did see her left leg today and I can definitely say she has a dark band on it.
-
Which leg? A dark band - was it a single colour or could you tell if there were two colours ? Holly's band is black over green, Hurricane's is just black ...
-
It looked like two dark colors on her left leg, one was black but I thought I saw a hint of green but it looked dark. I will keep checking. I want to see her right leg but she is always facing wrong direction. ::) The band looked black on top and thats different than Holly's. Isn't Holly's band green over black?
-
Okay, I just went and looked at 2008 banding photos and Holly's left band is black over green. :D
TPC, Do you think you could get somebody to move the building please , so I can see her right leg? ;D ;D
-
I should mention she certainly knows when I am looking at her with binos, She looks right down at me from her perch on the mts tower and she's probably thinking nananananana, you can't see my right leg :P
-

LOL, RCF! ;D We all know that you and Rose and birdlover are doing your best! You just pay her "no never mind", when she does that "nananananana" stuff! ;)
-
Very windy and rainy today, just saw birdies perched. I didn't stay to watch, maybe tommorrow it will be nicer.
-

Today I watched our two falcons swooping and playing talon tag around the McKenzie building and the MTS tower. Its amazing how fast they were flying in and around the buildings 8) They were cacking and flying upside down, touching talons. Pretty Cool ;D I also tried to see females right leg. I saw what looks like red on her right leg but its kind of a grey day, not sunny at all and that probably didn't help, but she was perched where I could see finally.
-
Stopped for a quick look this afternoon, and saw 2 at home. One on the corner and one on the box. Seemed casual and homey. Then I left.

Someone's a long way from home :o
-
Tracy, Help, Help. I am not too sure who the female is here because today I watched the male bring her a gift, which she took from him and proceeded to eat it. After she finished, she walked along the girder on MTS tower and I watched her clean her beak and this is when I saw her right leg. The band was black on right leg and I could see the blood on her talons from her meal, I am very sure the band was black and not any kind of red or purple. So I am thinking this is not Holly. ??? We really need help out here. I did see them doing the "making babies" ritual after that and then she perched on west light of McK bldg and he perched on MTS tower.
-
RCF, I am so surprised that there is no one out your way, to help with observations and ID. :o All the more important for you and Rose and birdlover to "hang in there". I appreciate all of your postings as I know many others here on the Forum do too. I wish we could help you out more. Maybe TPC will be able to help with your ID of a black band on right leg. :-\
-
Just do your best RCF. I have support here but not Id support. they seem to think I can do it by magic. I cannot afford a scope yet. So my motto is: I have RAdisson and a male. They make babies. Best I can do right now.
-
RCF & Rose, your updates are wonderful - those birdies seem to have made a game of hiding their legs from you! I can't even begin to imagine how you can spot those tiny little bands.
Sounds like you have a boy & girl with some romance making going on . . . .it's all good.
Thanks again for your posts.
-

I look every day and I too can not afford a scope. I just watch and wait for them to perch where I can see them fairly well with binos, which is on the old MTS tower and is only about seven stories high.
-
No worries RCF and Rose, there are others out there trying to get an ID on the Brandon birds too. There are a number of excellent birders with high-powered scopes who are trying as well as Manitoba Conservation staff. We may even have a report this weekend or early next week with information on whether they have begun to nest.
And don't worry about the timing, it always takes longer to get the Brandon IDs because I can cheat and get them at the Radisson with the spycam. Keep in mind that the West Winnipeg birds have been back for longer and I still don't have an ID on the male yet!
And about that black band, interesting that you should see it today ... had a report from yesterday that there were three peregrines at McKenzie Seeds from a more than reliable source. One scenario could be that we have all been watching Holly (who a bicoloured band for the new folks) and that she has been displaced by Hurricane who has a solid black band on her right leg. Another scenario is that no one has been displaced and Hurricane has been there all the time. Or a new black-banded bird has been there all the time.
A little adventure and mystery at this time of year is fun, too much is sometimes hard on the system :o
-
Rose and I did see three falcons on April 11th, two on buildings and one flying up above parkade. Just have to keep looking I guess. :)
-
sorry I made a mistake (still learning) meant to answer tpc's post but didn't happen so here goes :D
Very interesting TPC just like a murder mystery many questions to be answered ( who' who and what's what). The bird seen yesterday is bigger than the male could Hurricane have grown over the winter? What was the significance of the the flying display RCF saw april 29th was it just having fun or was it greeting a new friend? The falcons we have been watching have spend a lot of time in and around the nest box as well on mts tower. Or may be we have a(menage a Trois) lol! Rcf says the malar stripes of female from yesterday seemed different from Holly's in Dennis's photos. Also you probably know the best and closest place to see the pair is from the parking lot just to the north of mts tower. We are just amatures and having lots of fun. ;D
From TPC: no worries Rose, easy to fix :)
-

This is from April 29th Today I watched our two falcons swooping and playing talon tag around the McKenzie building and the MTS tower. Its amazing how fast they were flying in and around the buildings They were cacking and flying upside down, touching talons. Pretty Cool
Or was this an unfriendly meeting with one of them trying to chase the other away?
TPC, What's your take on this?
-
Very interesting! Maybe 3 peregrines out there?! :o

Hard to tell, it could be courting flights or territorial warnings. Real conflict, in my experience, is pretty down and dirty even in flight, the aggressiveness shows even to the layperson. I suspect that your flights are courting we've seen that kind of thing before often in Brandon ...
-
Very interesting! Maybe 3 peregrines out there?! :o
Probably not three for the season, unless one is a juvenile that the resident pair will allow to remain so near to the nest. Not a common occurrence.
-
What I saw that day looked more like they were playing :), not fighting.
-

Then that is probably what it was ...

Dan our "Man in Brandon" reports three eggs in the nestbox at McKenzie Seeds as of Saturday, May 1st. That means incubation has started, chicks to hatch May 30-June 2 probably. Very tentatively, banding should occur about June 23-25.
As for the identity of the birds, Dan is pretty sure Hurricane is our resident female again this year. So for those of you looking for bands, female should have a black band on her right leg. If Zeus is our resident male, he too should have a black band on his right leg. Start with that and let me know what y'all see!!
-
Whoo hoo, new birds all around it looks like in Brandon. And that there was coup, either both male and female or just the male.
Resident female looks to be Hurricane, female from last year. When I was last in Brandon however, the female on site was much larger than Hurricane, so there was another female there within the last month. Perhaps Holly, perhaps another female.
Resident male looks to be new at this site. New male looks to be Brooklyn, a 2007 wild-hatch from Brandon who spent last summer not nesting at a site west of Brandon last year. We had hoped he would return to nest this year, just thought he would go to the same site as last year, but it does not look like that is what is happening. I should note that the male that was around when I was in Brandon, looked & behaved very much like Zeus and Dan in Brandon witnessed a bit of a dust-up on April 30th.
Now the question is, and which will probably never be answerable, is if there are 4 eggs in the box as of today (yes a fourth was laid) then who's kids are they? Chances are they are Hurricane's as she appears to have been around long enough, but can't say for sure if Brooklyn has been around for at least 2 weeks ....
Brandon is sure the wild, wild west this year, anything can happen and it is!!
-
You may have noticed my "looks to be", these are really our first looks at these bands, Dan is sure about Brooklyn's and is pretty sure about Hurricane's. But given that these are the two I saw when I was there 2+ weeks ago, "looks to be" is the best I can say before I chat with Dan in person ....
-
WOW! :o Lots of excitement in Brandon, for sure! 4 eggs in the nestbox! Excellent!!! ;D
-
Wow...the wild west :o :P
-
What a soap opera ::) When I read tpc's 1st post I thought I'd been seeing things these last few weeks and then she said the female she saw when she was out here was big and the male looked like Zeus which was kind of what we thought in our amaturish way(Zeus black band right leg and longer malar stripe right side, couldn't see numbers) and we are pretty sure that female layed at least one egg maybe two from activity in nest box. Then there was the flying activity on thursday 29th and then on 30th we noticed the female was different and had a black band right leg and different malar stripes( very black and rounded) but didn't particularly notice the male. Then Saturday and Sunday were a wipe out ,terrible weather!! Bless Dan for going out in the rain. Now that incubation has started what's next? Where's Zeus? would he give up his territory so easily? Did he and big female leave for someplace else? A real conundrum ??? ::)
-
Dan in Brandon witnessed a bit of a dust-up on April 30th.
So maybe what I saw on the 29th with the falcon chasing the other one and the upsidedown grabbing of talons was indeed unfriendly. :o On friday when I saw the male give the female a gift, I didnt really notice if male was different because I was focused trying to see her black band. I didn't see them again till today. I did notice that the male was perched close to the top of the MTS tower, not where (who we think was Zeus) perched. He was usually perched on one of the girders about two thirds up on tower.
Today there is a birdie laying in the nestbox. I waited around the parkade for a while cause at first it looked like nobody was in box, I guess she needed a stretch and I could see the top of her head. :) If this male is Brooklyn, would he be Zeus's kid and would Zeus give up his territory easily?
-
All I can say is WOW! The most important part of it all....we have 4 eggs. Wonderful!! ;D ;D
-
Just out of curiosity, did Dan have to go up a ladder to see in the nestbox or does he have a 30 foot periscope? :D ;D
-
Well, peregrines love soap operas. Just as long as no one is hurt.
Maybe we have step kids there ;)
-
Just out of curiosity, did Dan have to go up a ladder to see in the nestbox or does he have a 30 foot periscope? :D ;D
Neither, there is a window that we can use, along with binocs to get a good look in the box :)
-
Maybe a picture next time? ??? ???
-
Maybe a picture next time? ??? ???
Its kind of a twitchy set-up particularly if the weather is less than optimal as it was this weekend. But yes, we will see about getting some photos for y'all :)
-
WOw! There is alot going on out in Brandon for sure!
-
Just out of curiosity, did Dan have to go up a ladder to see in the nestbox or does he have a 30 foot periscope? :D ;D
Maybe he has a "perigrinescope"

Don't know how that happened-I got included in the quote ???

So, drove to Brandon today to see what is happening. Saw one boid. Took a picture, then I drove home.
-
I seem to recall you were in Brandon and saw the birdies not too long ago (April 29 to be exact).
And now you've driven down to see the birdies again... is there something we should know?

::) um... no..

Who are the pair. the male is new or the female??
-
Who are the pair. the male is new or the female??
Well bev I think tpc and Dan (conservation) have got it sorted out. The new male is Brooklyn(3 years old born in Brandon) and last years (can I say resident) female Hurricane also 3 years old and born on the Radisson. They are incubating 4 eggs, there a few Dust Ups with another pair and it seems this pair came out the winner, they are both young so hopefuly we will have them around for next few years. :)
-
Yes Rose, you can say that Hurricane was the resident female last year ;) Who ever owns the nest, owns the territory.
-
Took a picture of Brooklyn today, I think he was having a nap. :)

Is this the first time he's been back home? If so, was he spotted elsewhere the last couple of years?

Hurricane is from Winnipeg, born in the nest box on the west side at the Raddison Hotel. She was born in 2007 and was thought to be a male until she showed up at Brandon last year.
The 3 chicks that year were so entertaining to watch. You will all love watching this year in the nest box. So close and just so great.
-
I'm telling you all, right here and right now, there will be no looking into my bedroom window. :o
Sheesh.

this si a real success to see your falocns returning.
We never get the news of ours.
I only know the nests I watch.

Any news of Brooklyn & Hurricane, Rose or RCF or birdlover? ???
-
Saw both birdies today. Hurricane was on MTS mast this morning and after five pm, Brooklyn was having dinner that Hurricane left earlier on the corner of Mckenzie roof. I should tell you Hurricane was in the nestbox being a good mom. ;D

Nice picture RCF :) :)
-
:o Scope is just what one needs to see the nest box up close and personal. ;D On the higest power the nest box filled the sights! :o
Too bad somebirdy wasn't visible. However, it's cool and cloudy with a good wind so they were prolly hunkered down.
-
Hmm, seeing Hurricane makes me want to consider a Brandon trip ..... I have pictures of her (well, him at the time) from her fledging days.......
-
Today, I was on the parkade and I took a couple of photo's. First one of Hurricane perched on south light and second one of Brooklyn. Brooklyn was perched just above the nestbox on McKenzie roof. There were three guys working across the street on the roof of the old MTS building and Brooklyn was glaring at them. ;D
Both birds were perched on roof of Mck bldg for a few minutes and I watched and heard Hurricane YELLING (just like her mom) at Brooklyn to go into the nestbox and he did. ;D ;D

Very funny, RCF! LOL! ;D Also, I enjoy your photos... You must have a very good camera if you took those photos from the parkade. :D
-
spent an hour or so on the parkade, back lanes and parking lots around McKenzie building only saw one bird (Hurricane), Brooklyn must have been hiding on us. When we got to parkade Hurricane was on the nest, we could only see her tail feathers, pretty soon she stood up stretched perched on the ledge a few minutes and flew off around the south corner and around to the north of the building. We went to the back of McK Bld. didn't see her when suddenly she flew towards us fairly low, circled around and checked us out, then flew up to north east corner and again gave us the once over, then she flew around to the nest box and out of our sight. No sign of Mr. Brooklyn, there are many places on the north side where it's cool and out of the wind to hide, at least to be out of sight. :)
-
Thanks for the report, Rose! :D

-
Hurricane sure looks bigger than I remember her being ...
Maybe this is just an impression we have,we don't have many pictures of her from last year. I can only find 2 or 3,she didn't participate in the (chase all these interlopers away) and left it all to Zeus who did a fine job,so Dennis didn't get many pictures of her. If you compare the pictures from last year to the ones Rcf took this year I,m pretty sure it's the same bird, same mallar stripes, same head shape, same barring on the front and same bib with a tiny bit of colour wash, and when we can see the two of them together she is not a lot bigger than him. ::)
-
Thanks Rose, I wondered if I was misinterpreting her size in the photos.
And to be honest, Dan is rarely wrong with his identification of individual birds so I was pretty sure it was her. Just looked bigger in the most recent photos.
Great photos though!
-
Great reporting and picutres :-*
-
Just got back from downtown all is well at the nest. Hurricane on the eggs could just see her head and once in a while she would show a little more of herself. Brooklyn was on the south light, moved to the east light and flew off to the west, hopefuly he was off to get Hurricane lunch. :)
-
Thanks for the update, Rose! :D

Nice photo of the Brandon nestbox with Hurricane's head poking up, RCF! :D

Go for it, Rose! ;)

Boy our nest box looks like vintage Ma & Pa Kettle but I guess we mustn't complain cause a lot of falcon chicks have fledged from this box including Brooklyn. ::) ::)
-
Hey, it works. Nice poop-art by the way.
-
Thank you for the photo & all the updates. That was not at all what I pictured their nest to be.
Is it on the side of the McKenzie Seed building?
How high up is it - and how high is the building?

The nestbox is on the east side of the building and its about seven stories up. The Mckenzie building is about thirteen stories high including the clock tower.
-
Re: the nest box. Mck. bld. consists of a lower building (six stories) with a roof and a parapet and right behind and attached another taller building about another six stories, the nest box is about 30 feet up above the lower building. They use a 30 foot ladder on banding day to reach the nest box. This makes this nest box a pretty safe place for fledging because of the roof below. Please note these are only approximates but are pretty close.

for a good picture of the building and where the nest box is located go to the photo gallery and brandon banding 2009. :)

Hey, it works. Nice poop-art by the way.
There's poop art on the roof, on the tower roof, on the Scotia sign and only TPC,Dan and Dennis know what marvellous art is on the roof below the nest box ;D ;D

Yayyyyy Rose!!! You are now a CHICK. Way to go mom :-* :-* ;D

Congrats Rose, knew you could do it ;D
-
Congrats Rose on becoming a chick!!

Gee Rose, three more posts and you will be a CHICK ;D
Congratulations on becoming a Chick, Rose! 8)

Made a quick stop at parkade today, not much going on. Brooklyn was sitting on the west light of clock tower and Hurricane was in the nestbox.
-
Rose & RCF,
Thank you for all your updates & the explanation about the location of the nest box - I'd forgotten about the banding photos from last year.
Glad to hear all is well in Brandon.
-
Cold ,windy and rainy here this am,Brooklyn on edge of north east corner roof and Hurricane in nest box, quiet day after weekend winds. Question for TPC, the eggs should start hatching about June 4th or so? We won't be able to see them until they are big enough to stretch their heads above the nest edge but we should be able to see the parents in the box feeding them. :)
-
Rose & RCF & birdlover, today when I told the Kinderchicklets that one of Princess's chicks from a few years ago (Hurricane) is all grown up now and has moved to Brandon to live with Brooklyn and have their own chicks, you should have seen how excited they were to hear that! LOL! ;D Several of the 'chicklets have been to Brandon to visit grandparents and now they are going to look up in the sky for Hurricane & Brooklyn, the next time they travel to Brandon! ;)

Yes you should - and Dan will be checking on the little darlings about hatch time to get some idea how they are doing. So far all has been going well though!
-
Out and about this am,no rain since early this morning, stopped on parkade about 11am Hurricane on south light and then flew around to west light, she had her tail feathers all spread out over the light, I guess she was drying them out because if she did the shift during the thunder storm she would get decidedly wet (wind and rain from the northeast). We assume Brooklyn was on the eggs but couldn't see him(he tends to hunker down when he is on duty) Glad to hear Dan will be checking the nest at or near hatching time.
-
:-* for all the reports.
This is a busy time for those of us who have to observe from the ground.

Yes, I'm sure it is, bev! And I think it must be a very tiring time, too. Thanks to all who post reports from "ground" observations! Much appreciated! :D

We had a real nasty storm go through here this morning with power lines down, large trees down, fences blown over, boats and rvs tossed around and some large signs blown out. Some have been saying it may have been a tornado. :o Most of the damage was in west and north part of city. I hope our falcons are okay.

So far as I have heard, Brooklyn and Hurricane and their kids-to-be are okay. They are smart cookies, they would have tucked down and waited out the storm - fortunately, there are a number of nooks and crannies around the McKenzie Seeds building where they could hunker down - and whoever was in the box (like Hurricane) would just lie flat on the eggs - she's small so she would have had even more protection from the wind in the box.
I do have a call into Dan just to be sure ...

Holy smokes, RCF, from the looks of the photos that you've posted, it sure does look like it could have been a tornado passing through, out there in Brandon! :o
-
I second that "Holy Smokes" Kinderchick! I'd heard that the power was out i some areas of Brandon, but had no idea the storm was so bad out there! My heart and thoughts are with the folks and falcons out in Brandon!
-
Just back from downtown,Hurricane was on east light so I assume Brooklyn was on the eggs, can't see any one in the nest box unless they are at the front or standing up.Hurricane spent a long time preening and fluffing her feathers in the sun. This is the first sun we've seen in about 4 days and now it's gone again. We had 4inches of rain over the week end,so our falcons would get some wet.I stayed til she flew off probably to find dinner. Since she looked so relaxed I assume everything in Brandon is ok. :)
-
Wow - that was some storm! :o Glad the birdies are safe and sound.
So nice to hear that Hurricane was enjoying some 'me time' in the sun today. :)
-
Heard from Dan and Brooklyn and Hurricane are still incubating and expected hatch date is this week. There are however, two eggs in the box now, not four. We have no idea what could have happened but the site is not accessible to anything but the peregrines so chances are, the eggs weren't viable and the adults disposed of them. Princess and Trey used to do that regularly, so the ability to spot non-viable eggs could be Hurricane's inheritance from her parents.
-
Sorry to hear that TPC, seems to be happening or happened to a number of the nest sites we've watched this spring. Lot of nests with only two and eggs either unhatched or pushed out. Hopefully the last two are okay and will hatch with no problems. Given the terrible weather, we should be thankful they are all safe and still around to even tend to eggs :-\
-
That's very sad to hear. :'( :'( Hopefully the two eggs that are left will hatch and the chicks will fledge successfully.
-
TPC do you suppose two of the 4 eggs seen earlier were not hurricanes? I'm almost positive the other female had layed 2eggs before the nest got taken over by Brooklyn & Hurricane, would Hurricane still have incubated them as hers or would she have turfed them, do Perigrines do those kinds of things? ???
-
the female in Gulf, Pittsburgh, incubated her 3 and the other females 2, and all 5 hatched and are doing very well.
2 eggs have gone missing in REd Deer also.
-

I looked at the timing Rose and there really wasn't quite enough time for the "first" female to get down to laying, we just didn't see the pair together for long enough - 3 weeks minimum is needed. I suspect that it was a case of non-viable eggs rather than anything else - the eggs were observed at the proper intervals etc by someone who has been doing this for a long time. So though stranger things have happened, but looking at what we know, I think its a good bet that these are all Hurricane's and Brooklyn's and that for whatever reason, two were not viable - maybe the stress of defending a territory had something to do with that, no way to know. It happens, and it will mean that the two chicks that do hatch will get plenty of food and attention from their parents, one of whom is new at this and the other has only done this once before and with a much older, more experienced partner the last time.
-
That's very sad to hear. :'( :'( Hopefully the two eggs that are left will hatch and the chicks will fledge successfully.
Oh Rapidcitymbfabn, I couln't have said this any better. I will think positive thoughts for them :)

Columbus only had 2 of their 4 eggs hatch thi syear and it is probably a good thing as the male there is learning. He is doing a great job, but took him awhile to get used to incubating and now he is feeding. so who knows .
-
Heard from Dan and Brooklyn and Hurricane are still incubating and expected hatch date is this week.
Another 'hatch watch' week! Hopefully the weather will co-operate so as not to add to the stress of new parenthood.
Good luck Brooklyn & Hurricane.
Thank you TPC & everyone in Brandon :)

Rose and I were on parkade today, saw Hurricane perched on east light and could see Brooklyn's head in the nest box. We watched for a while and decided to go down to the street hoping to get a closer look and maybe a picture of Hurricane. Just as we got down to the street, something must have spooked Brooklyn, because he was out of the nest box and yelling at something . He kept flying back and forth above the lower roof of McKenzie building. We couldn't see what he was upset about and thought we should have stayed on the parkade ::) Hurricane didn't seem to be agitated and stayed perched on the light, but eventually she went to the nest box. Brooklyn did go and perch on the MTS tower, but he was still yelling. We went to the west side of building and noticed somebody on the far west end of roof , directly south of McK bldg (roof is only two stories). Only thing is, I don't think Brooklyn would have seen him from the nest box, unless the person had also been on the other side of the roof. We figured that's what spooked him. Anyway we were happy to see both birdies today, because lately we have only seen one.
-
Doesn,t that just frost you Rapidcityfan, when you move to another spot and something happens and you wished you had stayed put. that happens to us all the time ;D
Hope you have a hatch soon.
-
Dan our Man checked the nestbox today and Hurricane and Brooklyn still have eggs ...

Gee, what time was he at the Mck bldg? Maybe it was Dan that spooked Brooklyn, it was about 1pm when we were there. Sure glad to know they still have eggs. :-* ;D
-
I did manage to take a photo of Brooklyn in flight when he was flying back and forth over the lower roof.

Yes, only positive thoughts, RCF! ;D

Well, I think your photos are mighty fine, RCF. :D Besides, as far as I know, Dennis has not posted photos of Brooklyn and Hurricane this year and you have! ;)

Did a quick check on birdies today, only saw one. Pretty sure it was Hurricane in the nest box. :)
TPC, have you heard anything more from Dan about any hatches yet?

Nope, not yet. Think he'll call as soon as he sees something though!

Okay, Thank you Tracy. :)

Any time now, RCF and Rose and birdlover! ;)
-
My fingers are crossed.
Nice shot, by the way RCF

As of 1420 hrs (local) one chick had hatched in the nestbox at McKenzie Seeds. Dan is going to check again tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday for a second hatch. When we have confirmed all the eggs have hatched, then we will be setting a banding date.
Congratulations Brandon!

Wonderful news -- way to go, Brooklyn and Hurricane! And three cheers for Dan, the man on the scene. . .

Thank you Rose, RCF, Dan & TPC for keeping an eye on our Brandon eggs/chicks.

Whoo hoo!!! That's excellent news, more grandbabies for Princess. :-* :-* :-* :-* ;D

How exciting!!
Hey, are you all planning on another road trip for the banding? Or is that rushing things a little?
-
Well not quite born in the rain (or maybe it was) cause it rained in the night but had stopped by 6am and we've had sun and clouds all day so a pretty good day. That's good because our nest box is hardly water proof. I'll be waiting to see the parents feeding and the chicks getting big enough to be seen above the ledge, I guess it will be banding time when we see that. :) :)
-
Dan and I will confirm banding dates when he is sure that the second egg will/won't hatch - need to make sure the youngest chick is old enough to be banded. Will let folks know when the date is.
As for an event, will also discuss with Dan as he is our man in Brandon. Every year has different circumstances so I'd hate to say yes and then have to apologize and say no because circumstances have changed since last year.
Will keep you all in the loop ...

Possibly me too, Sami, depending on when the branding will be. :) If bccs's car is full, I could drive a car full. But I am leaving for holidays in mid July, so will have to wait and and see. :-\
-
Congrats to the parents and Grandma :)
-
Back from parkade, adult was in nest box looked like feeding was happening, while I was still looking Hurricane flew out of nest box with remains of a carcass,a couple of minutes later Brooklyn flew off mts tower and disappeared into the nest ,sure would like to know if the second egg has hatched but feeding was certainly occuring. :) :) :)

BirdLover: "I got a spotting scope this weekend!

Haven't heard from you in awhile, BirdLover. How is your spotting scope doing?
Was wondering if you can see right into the nestbox?! 8)

Haven't heard from Birdlover for a while either but to answer your question you can only see things that are above the edge boards east and north sides of nest box(see pictures in photo gallery). I don't expect to see the chicks until they are tall enough to stretch their heads above the edge, probably a couple of weeks yet? :(
-
Thanks, Rose. :) I was actually wondering if she could see into the nestbox with her sight scope from the roof of the parkade? :-\ What do you think? I know that you go there alot to look for the peregrines. 8)

No she won't be able to see any more than you can see with binocs except she will be able to see in more detail, cause you can't see through the edge boards, what we need here is a periscope(perigrinescope)that's about 8 stories long lol, lol, lol ;D. Rcf has a little camera with a 26x zoom optical lens, with it we can see much more detail but not through the edge boards ::) also the parkade is the only place that you can see into the nest box at all for us lowly mortals. Dan can go up to the window under the eaves and look directly into the box but no one has offered us a key LoL
-
today it was musical nest box,at first Hurricane was in the box and Brooklyn was hidding on the mts tower, then Hurricane flew out with a used carcass and Brooklyn flew in then Hurricane came back to the nest box and Brooklyn flew out. This time he tried to stoop a pigeon x2 and missed then Hurricane yelled at him and flew out of the box,Brooklyn flew in and Hurricane went off hunting, she came back about 15 mins later but we didn't see what she brought back to the nest box and Brooklyn went to the tower. We're pretty sure Hurricane was feeding chick or chicks, didn't look like there was any incubating going on ??? ???
-
Has there been any confirmation yet as to whether there is only one chick or two? ???

How do you like your scope KInderchick. I am getting one next year
, and the biologists are lending me one when they get back form the field.
I hope you have 2 healthy chicks.
Great reporting.
-
Beautiful picutres RDF. :-*
I keep thinking Brooklyn i s the female ::) ::)
-
I haven't posted on this site before ( Winnipeg, only) but I'd like to see the banding in Brandon. I can certainly take my car. Let me know if you need a 2nd car.
-
Brandon banding is set for June 28th - will let you know the time when it is finalized. There are two chicks. We will again be putting coloured tape on the FWS bands to make it easier to identify them from the ground.
Same as last year for those who want to observe - top of the parkade is the best vantage point.
When I have more details, I will post them here ...
-
Wonderful.......two fluffies! :-*
-
Thanks TPC, We were wondering if there was another hatch. YAY!!! :-* :-* ;D
-
Great news grandma!! ;)
-
Brandon banding is set for June 28th...
Darn! I'll still be in school with the Kinderchicklets! :( Oh well, I did get to experience it last year. :D For anyone thinking of going, it's well worth the trip and the experience! :D Good news that Brooklyn and Hurricane have 2 chicks! :D
How do you like your scope KInderchick. I am getting one next year and the biologists are lending me one when they get back form the field...
I don't have a sight scope, bev, but sure wish I did! :D BirdLover is the one with the sight scope... Great that you are getting the loan of one. Last year at the Brandon banding, TPC set hers up on the parkade roof across the street from the McKenzie Seed building and let us observe the banding. It was awesome! ;D
-
oops , I thought it was you that had the scope. I have to save my pennies.
congratulations on 2 adorables :-* :-*
-

Saving my pennies too, bev! ;)
-
It is I who has the scope and it's awesome :o When spotting the nest box from the parkade second story the nest box fills the view and is VERY clear! I haven't seen anyone the last couple of times I have been downtown so that's why you haven't heard from me. Nothing to report.
I'm looking forward to zooming in on the chicks when they start to move about in the nest.
Highly recommend a spotting scope for those of you who are thinking of purchasing one. I'm glad I did. :)
-
Birdlover, can you pm me the information on your scope please.
sorry TPC
-
Checked on the birdies this afternoon, Hurricane was in the nest box and Brooklyn was in his usual hiding spot, preening himself on the old mts tower... same place as my last photo. :)
-
Thanks for the update, RCF! :)
-
couldn't get on the forum earlier this am,neither could RCF so we guessed the problem wasn't us. Was on parkade about 10am one parent was in the nest box couldn't see the other one but he(Brooklyn) flew in from the northeast with food, first landed on the tower and took off some feathers and flew to the nest box,Hurricane grabbed it (just like her mother) but I guess it didn't please her cause she took it to the tower and cleaned it some more and then went back to the nest box and started to feed the kids. Still can't see any little heads probably in another week if we get lucky and it's feeding time :)
-
thanks for reports. They will be showing themselves in no time at all. :)
-
Thanks also for the report Rose! :D

In case I missed following up on this one ... banding date is June 28th. The banding crew is meeting for 1030 hrs, banding itself will probably begin about 1100 hrs - little prep time, then up to the roof etc. Will bring my walkie-talkies so y'all can hear better than last time ...
-
If yours aren't working, I also have a pair.

In case I missed following up on this one ... banding date is June 28th. The banding crew is meeting for 1030 hrs, banding itself will probably begin about 1100 hrs - little prep time, then up to the roof etc. Will bring my walkie-talkies so y'all can hear better than last time ...
That's great TPC, But it was sure nice of bccs to pass around her cell phone so we could hear. :-*
It was great that Bccs had such a good phone - mine wouldn't have worked nearly so well! I have three talkies so I'll see about leaving two with y'all and taking one with us ... kinda like stereo!
I could bring 3 more too!
The more the merrier, never know what might work best ...
-
Hmmmm,.... if you had a hands free cell, I wonder if we could do a conference call arrangement for some of us out of townies?
-
your banding date might be the same as Edmonton. Ours is not set in stone yet.
so nice you can all be included in some shape or form.
-
I was so hoping the banding in Brandon would have been the 1st week of July. I was going to join all of you. But I have no vaction to take on Jun.28/10.
You all enjoy it. Last year sounded like so much fun.
-
Last year sounded like so much fun.
I'm with you, Moonstar -- left behind while the rest of the gang has all the fun . . . :( I had intended to go this year, but have all my vacation allocated with nothing to spare. Oh well, maybe we can organize a phanatic gathering after both bandings have happened and we can hear all about it!
-
For everyone who can't make it, sorry, we have very little lee-way when it comes to banding ages, we need to band them when their feet are full grown but before they get twitchy and think they can fly - so between 21 and 25 days ideally. The 28th was the best day for everyone, the chicks especially!
Dennis will take lots and lots of photos!!
-
Hey TPC, I'm just feeling sorry for myself -- of course the banding has to be done when it's right for the chicks! My unallocated vacation days are really scarce this year, so I wouldn't have been able to go anyway. If Dennis's photos are anything like the ones he took last year, they'll be well worth waiting for, and will be almost as good as being there! Hope it goes really well.
-
I'm sorry for the people who want to come to Brandon but have other commitments, because the display last year was wonderful but the pictures Dennis took of zeus were even better, nothing like getting up close and personal with an angry falcon. Hurricane on the other hand took it all in stride and simply flew to mts tower and let Zeus do all the work. She was only 2 years old and I guess wondered what was going on. From the parkade we do have a fine view of any display of fancy flying, there are no tall buildings to get in the way and lots of open sky and hopefully a cloudless day like last year. :'( :)

I too am feeling sorry for myself. But like Tracy says, it is all what is best for the birds and the people needed for the banding and not us...and that is how it should be.
I might be able to attend the banding of the west pair and watch from the ground. I am on vacation last 2 weeks of July and 1st week of Aug.
-
:'( I won't be able to go this year. Am working that day. :'( I know y'all will have a blast though. It was so much fun last year, I would do it again in a heartbeat.
Will look forward to the excellent photos our Dennis will snap!

BirdLover, great hearing from you! ;D How's the sight scope? ??? I'm not able to go this year either because school's still "in" for the Kinderchicklets. :( Yes, it sure was fun last year and maybe we'll be able to go again another time. :-\ I know that the most important thing is the birds and the "team" involved with the banding. :D And I'm certain that Dennis will post some fabulous photos! ;D
-
Well, I think we'd better get a head count of how many are going. I'm in, so are Pam, Linderlou and Des. If anyone else wants to go, let us know so that we can plan cars etc.
And I'll bring walkie talkies too, never know, might be able to figure out who is where on the road. ;D
-
Hmmmm,.... if you had a hands free cell, I wonder if we could do a conference call arrangement for some of us out of townies?
No hands free cell bcbird, but you can call me and we can pass it around. For sure with all the walkie talkies you'll be able to hear the birdies too.
Maybe even have a bit of a chat with TPC and Dennis. ;D ;D

Rose and I will be waiting for you on the parkade. We wouldn't miss the banding for anything and also meeting more phanatics. ;D 8)
-
I will miss you all! :'( But have LOTS of fun and take some GREAT photos, rcf! Dennis is not the only one who can take great photos! ;)

Count me in! If we have too many for one car, I can drive - just need someone with me who knows Brandon (I can get there, it's the getting around in town that would be the problem).
-
hope you all have a great time
-
Hurricane should feel right at home today - her hatch year had storm after storm after storm too - in fact she and her sibs used to sit up at night watching the lightning race across the sky!
Ever wondered where she got her name? ;)
-
Thanks for that TPC! I had no idea how she got her name " Hurricane" but sure makes sense!
-

No storm or wind the last 24hrs but lots of rain. Hurricane could be considered a video star, thats her being banded in 2007 banding video (link on cbc web cam page)23/y,she wasn't paricularly happy about the whole procedure and also TPC indicated she was male little did any one know ;D
-
Count me in! If we have too many for one car, I can drive - just need someone with me who knows Brandon (I can get there, it's the getting around in town that would be the problem).
A few simple directions to get to parkade from highway. At the lights at no.1 highway and 1st street turn left onto 1st street, go down 1st street to Princess ave.( that's the second set of lights south of the bridge),turn right, stay in right lane and go over to 8th street, turn right into parkade, parking is on west side of 2nd level we'll see you there ;D :) Just so you know, there is construction going on all the way down the hill but this is the best way in spite of construction.
-
We also send around a map to the drivers just before the convoy begins ...
-
Thanks for the driving directions. Simple is good, since I've been known to get lost driving home! (Well, it was dark out and after midnight, and after work, what can I say). ;D
-
Wish I was going with you, sami... Maybe next year. :-\
-
Just home from the parkade, What a beautiful day, all sunshine,no wind :) :) The whole family were sunning themselves, Brooklyn on the east light,Hurricane on the tower (and not hiding like Brooklyn). Could see the chicks in the nest box, they too were moving around and stretching their wings. They seemed to be pretty active, moving from one side of the nest to the other. They sure have grown over the last week, last sunday could hardly see them, now a lot of them show above the nest ledge and can even see some feathers(needed RCF there with the camera) :) ;) ;D
-
That's great Rose, thanks for the update ;D
-

Ditto.
I'm hoping to get to Brandon for the banding. Really looking forward to it all.

A very Happy Father's Day to Brooklyn!

A very Happy Father's Day to Brooklyn!
Yes, indeed! Happy Father's Day, Brooklyn ;D
-
Finally saw the chicks today 8), they were at front of nest box but they ducked behind the ledge every time I tried to take their picture. ::) I will try another day. :)
-
Glad you finally saw the chicks yesterday, rcf. :D Now we just need one of your great photos, so we can know for "absolute sure", as the Kinderchicklets would say, that there really are peregrine chicks out your way! ;) ;D

Going to Brandon Tuesday morning, so I will try to get pics. ;)

Glad you finally saw the chicks. they grow so fast :-*
-
Report from Dan in Brandon - he checked on the chicks and they are look great!
Banding is still set for the 28th. For those folks who are driving out to watch from the Parkade, if the drivers would send me a pm, I can send you the map we used last year to help you get where you need to go. Looks like we will be going up around 10:30, so we are aiming to get to Brandon for 10:00. We will be parking at the Parkade and will be sure to make sure that y'all are set up with the best view. And I will bring my scope for you to use. Lunch is at the same place as last year & yes, I will phone them to let them know we are coming.
-
I took this pic from the top of parkade ramp, its the best place to to see into nest box..... not the best place to get a real good photo. Brooklyn was cleaning his beak after feeding two little fluffies. :)

This is where Brooklyn keeps his cache.

Great pics, rcf! ;D Can see the 2 chicks! :D What is that long pole that appears to be sticking out of the nestbox and that Brooklyn appears to be standing on? ??? He looks as if he's walking the "gang plank"! ;) Maybe Hurricane said "March!" ;) LOL! ;D
-
What is that long pole that appears to be sticking out of the nestbox and that Brooklyn appears to be standing on?
That's their perch, when the chicks are almost ready to fledge, they will be out practicing on it. :o ;) They will also be standing on top of nest box.

Wonderful photos - they are getting so big! Your heart must stop when the chicks start walking the 'gang plank'! Does McKenzie Seed allow you to put mattresses on the ground beneath? ;)

Probably not ;D .........it's thirty feet down from nest box to the lower roof, the chicks would probably be okay if they accidentally fledged. :D
-
Great photos RCF. How nice to see them both. Great shot of both adults also. :-*
-
Great pictures RCF! Nice to see they are all doing really well. :D
-
I can hardly wait until banding day when Dennis will be taking up close and personal pictures of Mom, Dad and the kids. ;D

We had a great time last year and the forecast for Monday says sunny, so I hope it stays that way. I'm hoping a certain someone will refrain from dancing. ;D ;D :P

Does someone have a list of who all is going on Monday - how many cars are needed, who's going with whom?
-
I'll start a separate thread for those who want to make final arrangements this weekend ...
-
nice morning :) every one is in the sun Hurricane on Mck roof, Brooklyn on the tower ( not hidding) and the two chicks quite visable in the nest box checking the outside world, they seemed to have grown a lot in 4 days :)
-
Just a sneak-peak before Monday.
From parkade

Great pictures! :D
-
Who's the adult? Good pics RCF
Pretty sure its Hurricane. :)
-
In my second photo the white ledge directly under the nest box is the top of the lower Mck roof, which is a long way from the nest.
-
Wonderful photos - the chicks are huge! I think they puffed up over night.
-
I'll start a separate thread for those who want to make final arrangements this weekend ...
LOL, TPC! For some reason, your statement struck me as funny. Sounds like funeral arrangements! ;) I must be really tired! ::)
-
And I love the first photo, rcf... looks as if one of the chicks is getting ready to "walk the gang plank"! ;)
-
nice photos RCF :-*
-
this morning all sunshine(not supposed to last :() Hurricane on east light,no sign of Brooklyn, the chicks were at the front of nest box, then Hurricane took off, a few mins later Brooklyn showed up and landed on east light,a few mins later Hurricane showed up and started to yell as she came past the tower and flew straight at Brooklyn and put him off the light and settled there herself. Brooklyn showed up with something in his talons and flew into the nest box,he and the 2 chicks disappeared and he flew out and around the building, must have brought midmorning snack ;D on Satuday and Sunday you can hear them talking but the rest of the week there is too much street noise. Supposed to be a nice day tomorrow I hope, I hope :) ;D
-
Bahahaha, like mother, like daughter. Way to go Hurricane ;D ;D
Nice reporting Rose, see you tomorrow :-*
-
In my second photo the white ledge directly under the nest box is the top of the lower Mck roof, which is a long way from the nest.
The white ledge isn't the lower roof of the Mck bldg, its actually the side of a building across the street. I am posting picture where I was taking photo and where building is with white ledge.

TPC, Dennis, Dan, rcf, Rose, bccs, Sami, des, Pam and anyone else I might have missed... Just want to wish you all a great day tomorrow. Hope all goes well with the banding. Can't wait to find out the gender of the chicks out there. Hope you have good weather and then, of course, a fabulous lunch! :D
-
Have a great trip.......hope all goes well with the Brandon chicks...most of all enjoy the company of all! Sounds like a great day ahead ;D
-
It was fabulous last year ellie, and I predict that it will be so again. ;D
-
Have a great trip, and a wonderful banding day. ;D
-
Monday morning, beautiful day in Brandon forecasted, sunny and not too hot ;D ;D
-
Monday morning, beautiful day in Brandon forecasted, sunny and not too hot ;D ;D
Yes, that's wonderful. ;D I've been checking the weather for today regularly because we do live in Manitoba and the weather changes every five minutes. ::)
-
Rose & rcf, the Kinderchicklets want me to say "Have a great day" to everyone! ;D 8) :-*
-
So... how did the banding go?! ??? We all can't wait to hear! ;D You must be still having lunch. ;)
-
I had a wonderful time today at the banding, it was so nice to see Tracy, Barb, Sami,Dennis, Dr. Bob and Dan again. It was wonderful to meet more phanatics, des, Linderlou and Pam.
The banding didn't take very long and Hurricane and Brooklyn gave us a great show of dive bombing and swooping over Dan and Dennis. ;D Hurricane and Brooklyn are the proud and very vocal parents of one boy and one girl :-* :-* ;D At lunch Dennis let us have a peek at the pictures of the chicks 8) They are soooo cute! ;D I can hardly wait for Dennis to post his photos of the banding, so I had a great day!! 8)
-
Great weather, met all the Winnipeg gang on the parkade was able to put faces to the forum names,Linderlou,Pam,Des,Sami and Bccs(who hasn't changed any ;D). Hurricane and Brooklyn put on a spectacular display,Dennis has some really good pics of the chicks,a male and a female. We'll have to wait for him to post pics of the flying display,Hurricane actually participated this year.We missed you Kinderchick but you'll get to see all Dennis' pictures.Had an appointment downtown at 3pm, checked from the parkade on my way home, chicks were not in sight, Hurricane was on her light and Brooklyn on the roof below her,I think they were still looking for that fella with the motor cycle helmet and the pail ;D ;D
-
One of each. that is great.
I am glad that you all had a great time.
-
Super day, weather was great, and we had a good view from the top of the parkade! Two very vocal chicks, and two equally vocal parents. Brooklyn didn't quite measure up to Zeus's aerial display of last year, but it's his first time - and Hurricane got more involved (her second time). They certainly made their displeasure known. ;D Great lunch, good time had by all. Now have to feed the cats before they gnaw me off at the ankles.
-
What they all said, except for the ankles being gnawed. ;D
It was a grand day, and I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.
-
What they all said, except for the ankles being gnawed. ;D
Hey...what about the phone call
-
off doesn't really work on cats
-
Made a little phone call before lunch. No Blah, blah, blah, but a good long chat. sweet.
-
Great day, lots of fun - great to meet the Brandon folks! The weather was perfect - nice blue sky to watch the birds diving and soaring about! Am marking my calendar for next year.....
-
One boy, one girl, that's great news! ;D
-
Would do this day over again in a hearbeat. ;D ;D Really enjoyed watching the show Brooklyn and Hurricane put on and getting to see the fuzzy chicks through the scope. Nice place to watch from and made even better by a great bunch of fellow watchers. Hi Rose and Rapidcitymbfan, really nice to meet you and hope to see you again next year.
-
Wonderful day. Amazing to watch the soaring squawking birds! Dennis will have wonderful photos. The weather was perfect. Met great people, too. All that and enjoyed lunch too.
Really worth the trip. Thank you all.
-
Hey...what about the phone call
Nice to chatting allikat ;)...now on to editing photos.
-
So glad to hear that all went well - thank you for all your updates about the big day. Looking forward to Dennis' photos!
-
Forgot to mention, Tracy put red tape on the female chicks leg band and none on the male, so we could tell who is who when they fledge........not that we have had much luck seeing bands. ::) :D
-
you might see the tape though. I t sure helped me last year.
-
you might see the tape though. I t sure helped me last year.
Last years male "Fate" had white tape on his band and Rose and I could see it quite clearly. One of the three females " Luck" was much larger than the other two, so we could tell when we saw her, even without seeing her band.
-
We choose red tape because we thought it would be easier to see at a distance - better than the white or yellow or green.
-
Tracy, I know someone or somebodies are naming the chicks, but do you know how long it will be before we know? ???
-
A great day in Brandon with the birds performing well...yep, it was none stop action after the door was opened giving us access to the roof.
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/brandon_2010
More photos will be added over the next number of day's. For best view click on "original" under one of the photos. You only need to do this once.
It was great to see our Brandon Folks again...as well the folks that made the trip from Wpg. Topped off with a good time at the Double Decker for lunch !
Cheers !
-
Tracy, I know someone or somebodies are naming the chicks, but do you know how long it will be before we know? ???
Hopefully not too long ... when I have more information I'll let you know ...
-
Thanks for the pictures Dennis.........great as always ;D
-
Great pictures Dennis! 8) Brooklyn sure is giving you what for. Can't wait till you post more. ;D ;D

Happy viewing.
I really liked the shadow part of it too. ;)

The shadow kinda makes the picture really cool. :D
-
Almost looks like a long lens photo from the parkade roof ....
-
I would say so... :)
-
Pam??
-
The text for the photo has the photographers name, I believe he takes photos for the Brandon Sun.
I found another one today from the paper, looks like Brooklyn.

Very interesting photos, rcf. Thanks for posting them. :D The shadow sure makes the photo look very creative! 8)
-
Thanks Dennis, love the photos of the chicks you sent. :-* :-*
-
The headline caught my attention. In dutch, a Kistrel is a "torenvalk" which translates into "towering falcon". Nice pic.

More photos have been loaded to the Brandon Gallery !

Very interesting, bcf. :)

Excellent photos Dennis. :-* 8)

Went and checked out our family today. I watched Hurricane chase a pigeon which she made contact with but never caught it. But I think she injured it because I watched her give it a good knock, it landed or sort of fell on a low roof west of the parkade. The chicks were pretty active, spreading their wings and showing all their feathers. 8) When I left both Brooklyn and Hurricane were perched on girders on tower, one above the other.

Great pictures, rcf!
-
Rapidcitymbfan
Great pictures!
Is the first picture of Hurricane and the second Brooklyn?
-
Brooklyn is the windblown one,Hurricane doesn't look as dark as usual in that picture but it's her in top pic
-
Great pictures RCF..Dennis, I will look at all of yours this week if I can see them.
Ours should be fledging around the same time.
-
RCF and I spent an hour or so downtown, on the parkade and parking lot directly east of the nest box. Very little activity at first, chicks not to be seen, Hurricane glowering at us from the roof edge below the clock(east side), no Brooklyn to be seen. Then the chicks woke up, they have sure grown since banding. One chick seems to have grown a lot of brown feathers and doesn't have a lot of fluff showing (likely the male), he was doing some wing stretching but nothing too vigorous yet. Most of the time he spent looking over the edge of the box.The other chick has a lot more fluff and seems to be content to watch the world go by but not at the front of the box.
Brooklyn appeared,he might have had food,by the time we got to the other side of the parkade it was Hurricane that went into the nest box and I guess shared out the food. Brooklyn flew up to east light but when Hurricane left the chicks she flew directly up to the light, put him off the light and settled there herself, she was quite vocal about the whole procedure, I guess she was saying 'I'm the boss in this family and you'd better get some more food' so he flew off towards the Discovery Centre, maybe they'll have duck for lunch. :)
-
thanks Rose :-*
Will it be orange duck ;D ;D
-
Love your report, Rose. Thanks! :D
-
thanks Rose :-*
Will it be orange duck ;D ;D
Probably green teal, have seen a few of those wings minus the rest of the carcass ;D ;D :P
-
Thanks so much for the photos and the reports.
-
It was fairly windy today, had a hard time keeping camera steady. ::)
This one has that mohawk look. ;D

That's what Rose and I thought. ;D

Amazing the difference in such a short time - seems like banding was yesterday!
-
Great photos & updates. :)

Ditto! Thanks.

Love the Brandon pics, dennis, especially IMG 0092! :D
-
Thanks Dennis, Your photos are always wonderful to look at. :)

A little rain shower went over while I was on parkade today. Hurricane was perched on McKenzie roof and when it started to rain she flew to the top of the nest box. I think this is our little male, looks like he lost more fluff since yesterday. :)

-
Great photo, rcf! :)
-
Mom and the two chicks....... this pic was taken near parkade ramp, so its a little farther away than the other pic, which was taken as far west on the parkade that you can get.

2 chicks! :D Even better photo, rcf! ;)

Thank you Kinderchick. :D

Thanks for the pics!
-
Thanks for the pics!
Your welcome, How did your pics turn out Pam? Sure would like to see some of them. :)
-
Wow, how they've grown!
-
Love the photo of mom and two chicks Rapidcitymbfan. Thanks again everyone for all the information and photos to help us out of town folks feel like we are right there too ;)
-
Great shots RCF. Yours look more advanced than ours and they were banded the same day. I od nto think ours are getting enough food.
I was jsut going gto say what Tracy did. More fluff-female.
we have 2 so still lots of fluff.
In a few days they will look like real peregrines
-
These birds are about 10 days behind the Radisson, so if they start to fledge at 40 days, that is Wednesday next week (the 14th), so chances are the male will go end of next week unless he wants to hang out with his sister for longer and she will go the week after.
Best guess without having seen them lately ...
-
Love the pic rcf! Momma on guard! ;D
-
Met kinderchick and her husband on the parkade about 11:45, Hurricane and Brooklyn were on the tower but the chicks didn't show themselves for quite a while not till food was delivered and then they were busy filling their crops but we could see them towards the back of the nest and every once in a while one would do a wing stretch so you could see the wing span is getting bigger.Had a very nice visit and then they were on the way to points west, they plan to stop in Kelowna and visit BCBird. Kinderchick has her computer and plans to keep in touch with the Forum.
-
Great to see Kinderchick again and meet her hubby, we had a good visit. :) While they were here Brooklyn and Hurricane soared above the mts tower for awhile, which is always cool to watch. When it was time to go we wished Kinderchick and her hubby a safe journey west.
-
TPC, Any word on names for our chicks yet? If they can't decide on names, I have a couple of suggestions.
How about "Mac" for the male and "Kenzie" for the female. ;D ;D :D
-
Made it as far as Moose Jaw this evening, but had a great visit with rcf and Rose in Brandon on our way out west. Thanks Eye-Spy! :-* ;) We met them on the roof of the parkade, just before noon and spent about 45 mins. chatting and watching the birds with our binocs. Brooklyn and Hurricane put on a wee ariel show for us, which was wonderful! :D The chicks were tucked in, out of sight, with the hot summer sun beating down. Before long, however, they made an appearance, which was very exciting! ;D It was great to see rcf and Rose and I learned a few new things about the Brandon site. Rose pointed out the hack box that is on the wall not far away from the nestbox, but is no longer in use. Then she explained about hack boxes to me, which I had not fully understood, as of yet. Thanks Rose! :-* And of course, we got to see rcf's amazing camera and she explained a few of it's awesome features to us. 8) All in all, a great beginning to our vacation west! :D
-
Actually, the thingy on the wall to the right of the nestbox (looking from the parkade) is a window where we have set up a camera to watch the birds remotely in the past. The remains of the old hackbox sits on the roof below the nestbox along the north wall.
Sorry Kinderchick :-\
-
Thanks for clarifying that TPC. ;) Then I must have misunderstood Rose. ::) :-[ But I still learned some stuff about hack boxes, that I didn't know before. :)
-
If you go to the top of the 8th Street Bridge just north of the McKenzie building , you can see the hack box or remains of it sitting on the lower roof.
-
Just home from parkade,Hurricane on northeast roof edge,Brooklyn on east light and the two chicks sitting on nest ledge. The male has very little fluff (maybe none) and the female still looks moth eaten. While I was there the male went over to the perch bar and jumped on it and walked part way to the end, then just stayed there looking out at the world. Seems like he is a real beauty all brown and gold,he sure shone in the sun.No flapping just stretching his wings occasionally.I could have stayed a lot longer (with umbrella and lawn chair) but my hubby is an old car fanatic and there is a car show today so we had to come home. :)
-
Sounds like our little male is going to fledge sooner than we think. :o ;D
-
Rcf came in and we went to parkade (minus umbrella and beer).Hurricane was on tower post ,the chicks and Brooklyn were no where to be seen. Drove down to parking lot west of the bus terminal,it's in the shade and view of nest box and tower is much closer.Still no chicks but after we had been there about 10mins and staring up at Hurricane, she decided to check us out,she came down off the tower yelling made 2 passes (not close) then back to the tower still yelling, turned her back and stopped yelling. That woke the chicks. The male chick got up on the perch and made his way to the end using his wings for balance and stood there doing a few wing exercises, the female stood on the edge of the nest box and did some really fine wingercises, she still has quite a bit of fluff and looks bigger than the male. Then Hurricane decided to feed them, she went off and came back with prey, landed on south light with it, when she flew off the light to come down to the nest she dropped it and it fell in the gutter of the building, she tried to retrieve it but I guess it was stuck so she flew back to her corner in digust.Brooklyn showed up and made a half hearted attempt at some pigeons no luck so he flew up to the tower, the chicks made a lot of noise(like dad we're hungry and starving)but you can tell they are very well fed.WE left and drove over 8th st. bridge and could see the top of the old hack box , I've been down and around the building many ,many times and have never seen it so much for being observent ::) Rcf has some pictures she'll post when she gets home :)
-

Excellent shots rcf!
Thank you Ladies, I'm still trying to figure out the camera, so good pictures are mostly luck. ::) :D
-
Well, we certainly hope you continue to have good luck! ;D
-
Thanks so much for the great photos and descriptions of the falcon goings-on. Really appreciated.
-
Thanks, RCF, great photos - it is wonderful to have seen the place in person, and I appreciate all of your updates (and Rose's)!
-
thought I'd better check downtown earlier than usual,Hurricane in her usual spot,Brooklyn flew in to tower as I arrived, female chick lying down in nest box could just see the back of her. The male chick was standing on the edge of the nest box looking longingly at the world. Then he walked over to the perch pole and strolled to the end and proceeded to wingercise vigorously, still droops his wings. Then he flapped again and flew up to roof of nest box from the end of perch pole(made it look easy) :) I'd be thinking he is very close to fledging 8) ;D ;D 8)
-
Thanks for the report. Never a dull moment with peregrines!
-
Great report and pictures,
We started our fledge watch yesterday ,although they are not ready. The male is developing very slowly.
Ours were banded on the same day.
Nice you were able to visit with Kinderchick
-
Just got back from downtown, thougt I'd better check on them again today since the male was so daring this morning. both chicks are still in the box, male chick was busy with supper, tearing right into it from what I could see. The female was just sitting at the front of the box surveying the world. Hurricane was on south light,I think Brooklyn was hidding on the tower. When I left both chicks were sitting on the edge of the nest box, hope they stay there, supposed to be storms tonight.
-
Thanks for all of your wonderful photos, rcf and thanks for your reports, Rose! :D
-
Day 39: both chicks sitting on perch bar, male at the end, female in the middle,no sign of either parent. Couldn't see any fluff on the male and a lot less since yesterday on the female, not much activity from either one. Then Hurricane flew in with food, female chick grabbed it and went into the box. The male chick wasn't interested and continued to sit in the sun. Hurricane flew up on the tower pole and then I saw Brooklyn, he was sitting almost at the top of the tower behind the tallest mast if he hadn't moved I wouldn't have seen him,I guess he had been there all the time, sneaky little devil ;D Seemed like no one was anxious to go any place so I came home.
-
Just checked on the family,Hurricane on tower light and Brooklyn on northeast roof, couldn't see any chicks in nest box, looked all over then one of the adults yelled and the male rose up from the top of the nest box what a relief ::) he must have been lying almost flat and blended in with the box.The female I'm sure was lying in the nest box. Had to come home weather hasn't been very nice started about 3;30am ( thunder storms have been going all around us all day)and more storms predicted for this area.So far we have been lucky just rain.
-
rcf and Rose, it is so good that you are both there in Brandon, making regular checks on the chicks. Thank you! :D
-
Good luck on our fledge. I will check in when I can to see how it is going. Thanks for reports
-
RCF here on Rose's computer
:'( Very sad news.....I was on the street this morning around 8:30, could see female chick only, so I went looking for the male chick. I found him at 10:00 at the intersection of 10th Street and Pacific Ave, he had been run over.
:'( :'( :'( I took his body to the conservation office. I will PM Tracy and let her know because I know she is away.

I'm so very sorry to hear this news :'( :'( Thank you for watching out for them and for picking the little guy up and taking care of him.
-
Oh, that is such sad news :'(
-
very sad, frightning.... that could easily have been our little Isis
-
Oh, RCF, that must have been difficult to see. To hold a chick that went down and died is not what you would have hoped for. Very sad.
-
I just want to say that sometimes I find it difficult to say in words how I really feel. I found it very upsetting and heartbreaking to find him that way. :'( I know these things happen all the time in nature, but I guess I have become somewhat attached to these beautiful birds.
-
I am so very sorry RCF. My heart aches for you, and for Rose. :'( :'(

I can only imagine, it's my worst nightmare yet I know I will have to deal with it eventually. When I found the hawk on the road last week, even though it wasn't one of our boys - it still broke my heart to see the hawk that way.
The one silver lining here RCF is that you were able to take it off the road. Try to hold on to that thought, at least he can now be laid to rest with some dignity instead of laying on the road as cars continued to go over him. I know it's a small thing but I"d like to think it might make a difference especially to the parents if they could see the little guy and to his sister. You did a good thing RCF..even though it may not feel so good at the moment.
-
What sad news, RCF -- I'm so sorry to hear that one of the Brandon chicks has been lost.

Nicely stated carly.

Such sad news. :'(
-
That is so sad! Which is one reason I no longer have a pet. Such an attachment even if only for a few weeks as in the case here. The bright spot here is the female still getting ready to fly. Hang in there!
-
So sorry to hear the news. Thanks for what you were able to do in watching and in finding him. Take care.
-
Thank you everyone for all the kind words. :-*
-
Thank you everyone for all the kind words. :-*
Not enough kind words in the world to ease the pain RCF. Just know that we are all thinking of you and Rose and are with you both in this tragic time. :-* :'(
-
Oh, such sad news.
Thank you RCF for letting us know and thank you (and all the phanatics) simply for caring. There is some solace in knowing that you all do care. Makes the world a livable place.
-
It is very sad news and I agree carly it was a good thing that you were there to pick the chic up rcf.
-
Aside from what happened today, I did get a couple of pics of our female chick.

-
Very sad news, sorry for your loss :'(
I'm glad you were able to pick him up off the road. Did he have a name? Will he be named?
Is this the first time you lose a chick or has there been others in past?

-
I've just read through all that has happened today. I am so very sorry for this loss. My heart goes out to Rose and Rapidcitymbfan!!! You two have really gone above and beyond and done all you can.
To RCF, what you did this morning was respectful and touching to this falcon family by picking the young male up and taking him to a better place.
Thank you so much for caring! :-*
-
It may be the way things happen every day, but that does not make it any easier to hear. Thank you for being there to care.
-
She's a beauty RCF. Will anyone be there to help with her fledge at all?
There is just Rose and myself as far as I know. :-\
-
Very sad news, sorry for your loss :'(
I'm glad you were able to pick him up off the road. Did he have a name? Will he be named?
Is this the first time you lose a chick or has there been others in past?
No, he hadn't been named yet, but Rose And I were calling him "Mac" and until the female gets named we are calling her "Kenzie".
Years ago I know of one fledgling flew into hydro wires and was electrocuted.
-
RCF, I am so sorry to hear this news- you and Rose have been so attentive and caring. I am glad you were there to find him, as Carly said, this is much better than what otherwise woudl have for sure happened. A hard day.
-
Very sorry to hear this news that such a sad thing has happened. A hard thing for you RCF and Rose.
-
I am very sorry RCF . That is so tragic for you.
I am glad you were there to retrieve though. this is my worst nightmare.
We already lost a chick at one of our sites, this year, the same way.
We do the best we can, and know that you and Rose are making a difference.
My thoughts are with you and your gorgeous female. :-*
-
No, he hadn't been named yet, but Rose And I were calling him "Mac" and until the female gets named we are calling her "Kenzie".
Then we should just keep the name Mac.
-

I think now that he has passed on, he probably won't be named. I think that's how it works, not really sure. :-\

Not sure either rcf, but we can call him Mac regardless.

Everyone deserves a name and Mac is a fine name so I vote we keep it. You and Rose both looked after him so the honors should go to you both in his naming. Fly Free Mac!
-
RCF such very sad news but be assured you did what no one else would do and that is tend to him after his life was gone. You handle it with dignity and respect and most people in this world don`t care to even do that. Thank-you for your courage, your care and love for Falcons. My thoughts will be with you and Rose. And as for his name I think you should stick with Mac.
-
Thank you for all your kind and caring words. RCF and I really appreciate the fact that there are so many kind and caring folks on this forum and it makes it a fine place to be.It's RCF that deserves all the credit for the good deed yesterday, she was all alone and had the courage to do what was right. So as Carly said 'Fly free Mac' and to Kenzie I say 'Fly Free and safely' when it's your turn to go.
-
Well said Rose :-* and one for rcf :-*
-
Rose said it perfectly, this is definitely a fine place to be........Thanks Mom :-*

I have a couple of pics from today.
Brooklyn (on left) and Hurricane perched at bottom of clock tower.

We watched both Hurricane and Brooklyn stooping pigeons this evening, while our little miss was wingersizing on the perch bar. The perch bar was bouncing up and down so fast we thought it was going to break off!! :o We could see that when she stopped flapping she was drooping her wings, so we don't think she is quite ready to fledge yet. I just hope when she does fledge we will be there, just in case. :)

I just read about your little guy, Rose and RCF and I'm so, so sorry. We do get attached to these beautiful birds and even though we all know that these things happen in Nature, it's a very, very sad thing. I'm with all the others who have expressed how wonderful it was that rcf was there to pick up the little fellow. It would have been so much more tragic to have more cars running over him.
Beautiful pictures of the rest of the family, rcf.
-
OMG, rcf and Rose! I am in shock! :o I wasn't able to get on line yesterday here in Vancouver. And now that I am, this is so very sad! :'( And I just finished reading about Phoenix, the bald eagle's death. :'( I am so sad for you both of you. :'( That was a very caring thing for you to do, retrieving his body and taking it to the conservation office. But I know that you would never have left him on the street. What a great love both you and Rose have for the Brandon peregrines! I wish that there were more people there to help you with fledge watch. My heart and prayers go out to both of you.
-
Great shots of Kenzie! I'm so glad you will both be there for her! :-*
-
:'( I echo all that has been posted, rcf and Rose. There are never the appropriate words to express. Please know how saddened I am by this tragedy. The love and caring you showed Mac will never be forgotten. I hope for a successful fledge for Kenzie.
-
I am sorry to hear the news about Mac....Mother Nature sometimes stinks.
-
got to parkade at 8:00am RCF was already there, couldn't see anybody in the nest box, but RCF yelled she's lying down and that made me feel better ;D Watched for a while and Kenzie decided to give us a display of her wingercises, she sure looks big when her wings are fully extended but she still droops them a lot. She didn't look like she was really too anxious to do any more than fly from the perch into the nest or jump up on the roof of the nest box(food up there). About 9:30 or so we were treated to a flying display by both Hurricane and Brooklyn to rival anything they did on banding day. Also lots of yelling. They seemed to be concentrating on the north side of the building, diving and yelling at something we couldn't see.We walked all over that area, even up on bridge but coudn't see anything or anybody any place but there were a lot of cars in MCk parking lot at the back so concluded some one had been on the roof of the annex.twenty mins later both parents settled down on the mts tower. The whole time this was going on little miss sat on the perch watching and never moved. ::) ;D
-
Glad to see she is getting lots of exercise.
Here when parents alarm call, the chicks freeze. they do not move.
I will check in here when I can. fingers crossed for all of us.
-
Thanks for the report Rose. Glad to hear she is doing well :-* And thanks for watching out for her :D
-
After Rose left, Brooklyn still must have been peeved because I watched him escort a crow or raven away that was directly above the parkade. Then I went down to the street and got a couple pics.

-
She is one beautiful birdie, thanks for the photos rcf.

I second that B, she is one beautiful juvie!

Ditto! She is gorgeous!

These are great pictures of Kenzie, RCF.
-
Sure can see Mum and Dad in her. ;D
-
Gorgeous girl, sure hope she doesn't cause either of you any grief. You've had more than enough to deal with this year.
-
Thank you and your very welcome, we think she is beautiful too! :-* She was doing some flapping this evening out on the perch, but mostly sitting or laying on top of the nest box..........its probably cooler than inside the box. ;)
-
nice photos RCF . she is a beauty at that.
thanks for the great reporting Guys
-
She's very sweet. Great pics!
-
RCF and Rose you two are so wonderful in your dedication to this site. Great pictures and info on this nest this season. I definitely hope that are all your wishes and all that you have put into this will be fullfilled when Kenzie fledges. My hopes and prayers are definitely that this will be successful.
-
Terrific photos. Thank you. Did you say you were coming into
Winnipeg sometime soon?
-
rcf, those are great photos of Kenzie! :D Without you and your trusty new camera, we would not know what she looks like. I absolutely love the photo of her "walking the gang plank"! Thank you rcf and Rose, for your great love and attention to these wonderful peregrines. I pray that Kenzie will fledge successfully and safely. We continue to think of you both. :)
-
Great captures RCF...TPC had a great idea with the colored tape on the bands, sure makes for easy IDing for you guy's.

Thanks Dennis :)
-
Was down town early (6:30) couldn't find Hurricane last evening so thought I'd better check early(just because) ::). All the family was there. Kenzie was in her usual place on top of the nest box,Hurricane on south light and Brooklyn flying around. There was a major piece of prey in the box so she must have had a good breakfast.RCF is getting better with the camera all the time,She'll sure appreciate the comment from Dennis.Had to leave thunder storm almost here, lots of lightning and thunder got home before it rained. Plan to go back a little later. ;D
-
Thanks Rose! Great to know all is well in Brandon this morning. Your thunder showers must have arrived here shortly afterwards but now I can see the odd blue coming in from the west. Here on the prairies we all know how fast the blue can disappear. Appreciate all the updates and RCF your pictures are great ;D ;D ;D Check on this site faithfully. :)
-
Well looks like our little miss has fledged (or got blown of the perch bar). got a panic call from RCF that Kenzie was huddled up to the north corner pillar of the wall that surrounds the lower roof, still up 6 stories. When I got there RCF said Kenzie had been walking on the top of the wall and jumping down to the roof floor and back up again. While we were watching she did some more walking on the parapet she seemed quite confident and strode right out like she really knew what she was doing ::)lol. Finally she settled down on top of the pillar, she was so flat you could hardly see her.We decided as long as she stayed there she was safe, wind still blowing 30ks an hour. Then we discussed what to do if she got down to ground level,Rcf has a box and a towel and we were sure we could handle that part BUT what to do next ???? Dan is away till monday, conservation is of course closed (we did get an emergency number some one must be on call ?? and Tracy is away. WE decided if all else fails we would take her in the box to the police station and have them round someone up after all we are dealing with an endangered species and protected by law.But this isn't going to happen because she will be just fine. The two small females from last year spent more than a day doing exactly the same thing and in the same place and there were no problems last year. But I'll tell you it's sure nerve wracking!! ::)
-
Oh gees...I hope little kenzie will be okay. Please keep us posted!
-
Keep us posted ladies!
-
Wow, what a week for you two. :o Fingers crossed for Kenzie ( and for your nerves. )
-
Oh boy! You two must be on edge. Kenzie is in good hands/eyes though, with you two watching over her. Hopefully the nasty weather will clear and it'll be smooth "sailing" for your girl.
-
Looks like a race between your Kenzie, and the U of A site guys for fledging today. Great reporting!
Love your plan of the RCMP involvement.
Hope none of the rescue plans has to happen. Good luck!
-
It was very windy this morning and I really think she didn't fledge intentionally. ::) I checked on her before I left Brandon around 4pm, and she was still getting up and down on the lower roof ledge. It's quite a fly/jump to the ledge from the roof floor and she will have lots of room to practice up there, more room than the nest box. :)
Here she is facing east on the ledge

Hurricane on windowsill on north side of bldg, she seems to like this spot

Just read your post and I can hear "the wheels going around" trying to get a plan of action going. Hopefully all will be fine. Kenzie is in good hands! Will be with you in thoughts and waiting for the next info from you tomorrow. Have a good night. :-*
-
Rose & RCF, I'm just getting caught up - and I'm so sorry to hear about Mac. :'(
-
Down town about 10:00am Kenzie still parading up and down the parapet very determinedly and occasionly flying down to roof floor and back up,mom and dad were on mts tower.RCF has a cute little story (with pics) about our little Miss.So far things are looking good! ;D
-
Great report Rose!
Very happy to hear about Kenzie!
-
Rose and I had a good laugh this morning. ;D Our girlie had prey on the ledge and a piece fell to the ground, she looked over the edge and started kacking quite loudly as if to say "Mommmm, I dropped my snack!!" :o I went across the street to see what fell and it was just a leg with nothing much on it.

-
What an adorable fuss budget! Thanks for catching that story in pictures, RCF.
-
Checked on her this afternoon before I went home, Mom and Dad were flying back and forth in front of her trying to get her to fly. I did see her fly off the parapet to the roof floor. I waited a while and she didn't reappear, so she probably went for a nap. :)
-
Wonderful pictures and updates, thanks rcf.
-
Heh..she's adorable! Get that for me will ya mom!! :-*
-
Just got home: Kenzie was on the north parapet,I hardly saw her at first not till she stood up, then she started to run along the top of the wall and flapping her wings at the same time, she ran from one side to the other all the time yelling her head off, guess she wanted supper? but her mom who was right above on the corner of the bldg totally ignored her. I thought for a minute she was going to fly over to the annex but she didn't, she finally gave up and flew down to the roof where I couldn't see her.She should have built up her wing muscles today she's had lots of exercise. Couldn't see any wing droop today. :)
-
Looks like she's getting ready! Great photos - she's so cute with those fluffy bits on her head :-*
-
I guess I just missed Rose by a little bit tonight. Like Rose said she was doing a lot of yelling and Mom was still ignoring her. She seems pretty comfy sitting up on the ledge because after a while she decided to take a nap, she stayed there until I left.

thanks for the updates.
And she is a beauty.
YOur weather sounds like ours
-
I'm so glad that things are going so well for Kenzie, Rose and rcf. And your photos of Kenzie are truly magnificent, rcf! :D Pretty soon you'll be having to say "cheers" at the end of your posts, just like dennis! ;)
-
Downtown from 8:30 to about 9:45 and the whole time I was there she sat on the south wall ledge spent most of the time preening. She only flew down to the floor once and right back up and continued to preen. No yelling this am,dad did a fly past once which was totally ignored and mom flew over and checked me out then did a fly past and that was ignored too then the little miss just lay down and went to sleep so I left. Rcf started back to work today so she will do a short check at noon. :)
-
Heh..she's adorable! Get that for me will ya mom!! :-*
so cute!
-
Checked on our family around 4pm. Our girlie was sitting on north ledge preening and Mom was at her usual spot at bottom of clock tower, didn't see Brooklyn. I think when she fledges she will do well as she's had lots of practice flying back and forth from one ledge to the other. She certainly has had lots of practice SITTING on the ledge! ;D
-
So many positive thoughts for this girlie birdie, thanks for the updates rcm. ;D
-
Thanks rcm, appreciate the updates!
-
She certainly has had lots of practice SITTING on the ledge! ;D
HAHA rcf!! Love that remark! ;D

-
Thank you for the wonderful pictures & great updates. She's such a cutie pie.
-
Well finally progress, our little Kenzie has got herself up to the south east corner of the McKenzie building ;D ;D , Brooklyn is on the north east corner and Hurricane is on her post on MTS tower. I guess you could say Kenzie has scaled the McKenzie lol. ;D ;D
-
... I guess you could say Kenzie has scaled the McKenzie lol. ;D ;D
LOL, Rose! 8)
-
When I got downtown after work, Kenzie was sitting on the black ledge on the east side, so I went up to parkade to get a better look. Just when I got parked, she flew to this side of MTS tower and back to the south east parapet. Brooklyn was on the south west corner of the McK roof eating, she then scooted down the ledge against the west wall. I could see with binos that she was kacking and looking in Dad's direction. She flew off and around the other side of the mts tower and back over to the north east parapet. :) At the same time as she lifted off, Dad flew over to the mts tower. After a couple of minutes he took whatever was left of his dinner to her. :-* ;D
-
Is that an official fledge then?
-
Is that an official fledge then?
Yes, definitely!! ;D 8)

How wonderful for you rcf. ;D

It's great that you were there rcf, as it must of been a site to see! ;D

Great to hear RCF...5 down and 3 to go :D
Or rather 5 up and 3 to go ;)
-
When I was there this am (just got back) the family was all resting,Hurricane on her light,Brooklyn on his girder and Kenzie on south east pillar of roof wall eating breakfast. It's a beautiful morning would be great for flying I told them but nobody took the hint. ;D
-
Great news for this baby...Fly safe!
-
:) So happy to hear Kenzie fledged successfully. :)
Just stay safe now Kenzie.
-
Thanks for the news and all the detail. I can really picture it all.
-
Today, Kenzie was perched on the building directly across the street from the parkade, the same building Fate (last years male) fledged to. Dad flew over beside her and then the yelling started ;D I was watching and it looked like he actually pushed her off the ledge. :o She flew up and over and around the mts tower and landed back where she started, right beside Dad and her landing was very graceful.......looked perfect to me. I think she's got the hang of it. :-*

TPC, I was wondering if either of this years' Brandon chicks are going to be given official names? ??? I have read where Rose and rcf have given them temporary names ("Mac" and "Kenzie"), much like we did with our Radisson chicks (ie. "Mr. White"), prior to the vote for the official names. Are plans for naming these chicks in the works or should we continue to refer to them as "Mac" and "Kenzie"? :-\
On another note, was a necropsy performed on "Mac" and has there been any info reported on him from Conservation in Brandon since his death? What usually happens with a peregrine that has died? Is he/she studied, for future reference and are they interred? ??? Just wondering.

We are going to forgo naming the Brandon male, so if folks want to keep calling him "Mac" that's fine. We were thinking of calling the female "Mackenzie" (yes, different spelling) just a couple of days before the male fledged and now that she's the only one left, we are going to go with that, perhaps the "Mac" part will bring her more luck than her sibling.
On another note, was a necropsy performed on "Mac" and has there been any info reported on him from Conservation in Brandon since his death? What usually happens with a peregrine that has died? Is he/she studied, for future reference and are they interred? ??? Just wondering.
No need for a necropsy, we are pretty confident that we know how he died. From his condition, looks as though he was grounded by the high winds that day and then hit by a vehicle. Also looks like his death was instanteous. And no, the bodies aren't interred, generally they go to a museum collection to be able to track physiological changes in species populations over time.

Do you mean the bodies are preserved, say, with Taxidermy?

Gorgeous Mackenzie. i jsut had a few minutes to check. :-*to a successful fledge
Great photos
-
Great pictures RCF, she's absolutely lovely.
Thank you to you and Rose for all the updates.

When I got downtown after work today I could hear Hurricane and Brooklyn alarm calling. :o I looked around and up on the old mts building, there were five men on the roof. ??? I only saw Mom & Dad on the McK building, couldn't see Mackenzie, so I went up to parkade to get a better look. Mackenzie was perched right up on top of the roof of the clock tower, sitting close to mom, who was on the east light. Three of the men started to climb up the tower and Brooklyn & Hurricane immediately left their perches, swooping and kacking at them. They were getting pretty close, probably a real good thing the men had hard hats on. ;D Mackenzie joined Mom and Dad, but only for one fly around the tower, then she went and perched on the top of the Scotia bank building (13 stories), so she is flying very well. :-* And when she flew over the parkade, I noticed how really dark her feathers are, I guess she gets that from her Mom. ;) Anyway, the three men were just putting up more receivers on the tower because seeing them up there didn't make me happy at all. >:( Now there will be more places for Brooklyn to hide behind where we can't see. ::)

Sorry for getting too graphic, Saoise.
Beautiful pictures of Mackenzie! :D
Excellent BOT, Doreen, thanks.
-
Don't worry folks, the little Brandon male will be treated respectfully and he will be helping the recovery effort in Manitoba and North America for many years to come by helping to track changes in the species - with every new female that comes in from the US there have been changes in the look of their offspring - and if our observations with Princess, also with the size of their chicks.
-
Good luck to Kenzie and her first flights around Brandon! Thanks Rose and RCF for all the great updates.
-
Beautiful pictures of Mackenzie! :D

Sorry I don't know what BOT means.

Sorry I don't know what BOT means.
BOT - back on topic - we all find it very easy to get off topic chatting about the birds, so this is a subtle reminder to drift back to whatever is the topic at hand ... ;)

Oh, so that's what it means. I been wondering for years. I've seen it directed at Allikat and Eye-spy a lot and thought I was missing out on some secret code. ;D

Just read the West Wpg thread, we have a lazy chickie here too! ;D

I thought it was pretty cute myself! :-*

Good one! I remember we called TPC back in 2007 when we saw a juvie doing that for hours, we were afraid he was dead!

Just read the West Wpg thread, we have a lazy chickie here too! ;D
Fantastic photo, rcf! :D Dennis may just have to share his photo bucket before too long, if you keep that up! ;)
-
Just got a chance to get on here and check out what's happening with our girl. What wonderful pics you have taken of Mackenzie, rcmf! Thanks for the updates rose and rcmf! Good to know that our beautiful girl is flying well.
-
We saw a birdie fly off mts tower and join another and they flew up and up to the south until we couldn't see them anymore, not really sure who. ??? After waiting a while and not seeing anybody, we went down to street in behind the McK bldg. We spotted Mackenzie napping on the walkway that connects the two McK buildings. She sat up and looked us over, then she flew east past the mts tower. (we disturbed her I guess) ::) A little while later we spotted Brooklyn perched on a ledge where the louvers are at the top of the Scotia building on the north side, certainly a place where you can't see from parkade.

She is absolutely beautiful! :)

You are getting some great photos of this juvie, RCF.

Just got a chance to get on here and check out what's happening with our girl...
Hey, great to hear from you again BirdLover! :D
... We spotted Mackenzie napping on the walkway that connects the two McK buildings. She sat up and looked us over....
Absolutely fabulous photo of MacKenzie looking at you, rcf! 8)
-
Thank you. :) We can get pretty close, the walkway is only five stories. Rose spotted her first, I didn't even see her......she was laying down. ::)
-
What an expressive face she has!
-
Just to let everyone know. All three present and accounted for. Brooklyn and Hurricane on mts tower, Mackenzie in the same place that we found Brooklyn yesterday (on the ledge of the Scotia Towers louvers). Looks like this must be a favorite spot lots of poop shoot just below ledge ;D
-

LOL, Rose! ;D
-
Thanks for the update Rose, happy to hear little mackenzie is doing well :-*
-
Saw Mackenzie early this morning (6:30) having breakfast up on the mts tower, didn't see her after work....probably sleeping where it's cool. ;) I did see Brooklyn, he was eating on north west McK roof and Hurricane was on the north ledge where the louvers are on Scotia bldg.
-
Thanks for updates. :-*

Sad news from Dan in Brandon ...
Mackenzie was found dead on the sidewalk at the Brandon bus mall - looks like she collided with a wall or window as she had a broken neck. Don't know if the winds in Brandon were as strong as they were here today, but that could definitely have contributed to death.
Condolences to RCF, Rose, Birdlover and the rest of the Brandon watchers who have done such a great job of keeping track of the all the birds in Brandon this year.
-
that's extremely sad .... so sorry for the brandon folks.
-
That is so sad and unfortunate! Losing one was bad enough but both of them ........just not fair :'( So sorry for both of you Rose and Rcf. There just aren't enough words to say how one feels :'(
-

Mackenzie was found dead on the sidewalk at the Brandon bus mall - looks like she collided with a wall or window as she had a broken neck.
OMG, this is shocking news! :o I can hardly believe it! I am so very, very sorry, rcf, Rose and BirdLover! :'( Rose & rcf, you have been so committed to these peregrines and I know that they have brought you both much joy. I just don't know what else to say... :'(
-
What sad news, RCF and I are really devastated :'( I guess this year wasn't meant to be a happy one. MacKenzie seemed to be doing so well but these things do happen.By the way there was no wind today to speak of. I guess Hurricane and Brooklyn will stick around till it's time to go south, we'll keep checking on them till they go south and there is always next year. :'(
-
:'( :'( Such sad news. This has been one rough year.
-
I'm so so sorry Rose and RCF. :'(
You two have been so dedicated to this family.
This year just wasn't meant to be for the Brandon falcon family and that is very upsetting.
Fly free to Kenzie! And, fly free to her brother Mac.
Our hearts are with you Rose and RCF and the rest of the watchers!!!
-
This is a shock.
I'm sorry Rose and RCF for such very sad news.
Your days will seem quite different without Mackenzie to find.
-
So very sorry to hear the news, RCF and Rose. You have been so dedicated to the falcons, this is just devastating. I know it's nature, but that doesn't make it any easier.
-
No :'( :'( :'( :'( What horrible news, poor little Mackenzie. And poor Hurricane and Brooklyn to lose both chicks after all that hard work raising them.
Rose and RCF, I'm so sorry for you both - you both put so much time in looking after them and getting to know them.
-
So sorry for the little one....she was doing so good.
-
I am deeply saddened by this. No words can express how I feel. :'( :'(
We who watch from the ground know only too well, the dangers these wonderful raptors face in our urban settings
-
:'( I am truly sorry to hear about both of the little ones in Brandon this year. To those who have been watching then from the beginning, my thoughts are with you. I can not imagine what the double loss feels like. Nor could I imagine what Brooklyn and Hurricane are going to feel like. To loose both fledlings. :'(
-
This morning as usual I was eagle to find out how the little one is doing. I'm so so sorry to hear this. Words cannot express my feeling for the lost of my dear little one. Thank you so much for those who have been putting a lot of efforts in watching them. :'( :'( Love you both Mac and Kenzie.
-
Sorry to hear of the loss of Kensie. Rose and RCF you both watched the young kids from the time they hatched. Your work will never be forgotten nor will these two kids be forgotten. One step at a time, one foot in front of the other, one day at a time.
-
So sorry to hear the news.
-
Just got back from holidays - so very , very sorry to hear the news.
Heartbreaking.
-
So very sorry RCF and Rose, words cannot express how my heart aches for the two of you. :'(
-
So very sorry. There are no words. Heartbroken with you. :'(
-
I'm so very sorry to hear about MacKenzie. :'(
Thank you Rose, RCF, Birdlover, Dan and everyone else in Brandon.
-
Oh no, I'm so sorry on the loss of Mackenzie. :'(
My heart also aches with all of you in Brandon.
-
I didn't want to believe it, but it's very very sad what happened to Mackenzie. :'( :'( I know these things happen even if you were to watch 24/7, it's still very heartbreaking to lose both chicks. :'( We enjoyed watching Mackenzie. She would make us laugh especially the time when she dropped the piece of prey over the side of the ledge and she started yelling.......we burst out laughing! ;D We did notice that she spent a lot more quality time with Brooklyn, she would perch near or where he had been perched......not so much with Hurricane. I think she was Daddy's girl. :-*
-
So sorry to hear this bad news. Thank you to all of you who posted the story of their lives so that we could share it from afar.
-
I am so sorry to read this about MacKenzie. I was just getting over the death of our Miss Yellowband here in Edmonton, and had been keeping up on the Brandon peregrines postings. To not get attached is impossible, these birds are so wonderful. What a sad loss.
-
This is such sad news. :'( I am so sorry to hear about both Mac and Kenzie. Poor Brooklyn & Hurricane, they were such good parents. So sorry for the Brandon crew after all your hard work. Even though sometimes it is part of mother nature it is still hard to hear/see. :'(
-
Such sad news. I'm so, so sorry! Not fair...not fair at all! :'( :'(
-
Early this morning I saw one birdie on the north light of the clock tower, he/she then flew off to the east...... didn't see anybody after work. Yesterday, Hurricane was perched up on the north louvered ledge of the Scotia building out of the sun and Brooklyn was on a windowsill on the north west side of McK building in back lane, having a good old preen. :)
-
Thank you for continuing to post the adventures of the adult peregrines out there in Brandon, rcf. :) I know that it must be hard for you and Rose, not to see Mac and Kenzie anymore. :(
-
Thank you for keeping us up to date on Brooklyn and Hurricane. I hope they are both doing well!
-
Thank you for keeping us up to date on Brooklyn and Hurricane. I hope they are both doing well!
You're welcome! The McKenzie building is on my way to work, so its always a bonus to see them before work. ;D

Tracy, I would like to know how Brooklyn got his name and also his Dad, Keener-Skreech.(not sure if spelled correctly) It seems quite an unusual name?
-
Tracy, I would like to know how Brooklyn got his name and also his Dad, Keener-Skreech.(not sure if spelled correctly) It seems quite an unusual name?
Two stories there, actually three, but I only know the answer to two though I should have the third by the time I'm finished our family trees ...
1) Brooklyn - the young biologist helping out Manitoba Conservation the year Brooklyn was "born" was also expecting his first child. So he and his wife had chosen two girl's names and two boy's names for their impending offspring. When we informed this nice young man that he was going to be naming the chicks, he begged us to let him off the hook because he was all wrung out from the offspring name selection process. We were mean and said no. He then asked if he could use the names he'd chosen for his child and we said yes, so long as he wasn't superstitious if his child's namesake died. (He assured us he wasn't but I'm afraid I don't know if they used any of the four names they had chosen at the time the chicks were banded). Brooklyn was one of the girl's names but it works for a male as well when we took off the second "n". With a 50-70% mortality rate in the first year, the statistical chances that one name out of a whole nest survives is not great, Brooklyn beat the odds - must of been the removal of the second "n"!
2) Keener-Screech - this is the two story name - I don't know exactly how he got the name "Keener" but I can probably guess given what kind of acrobatics/behaviours are common among peregrine chicks. As for Screech, when he was paired up with Holly in Brandon for one year (Zeus was on sabbatical) he was ten years old and fully capable of going after Dan on the ladder as well as anyone else on the roof that came near his babies. He like to scream, more of a screech, as he came for you, bit like a battle cry as he leapt into action. We didn't remember what his original name was (he was 10 years old when he mated with Holly) so we started calling him Screech - there might have been a couple of expletives in there as well, I can't really remember. A year or so later, I found is original name in the records and he became hypenated as they both seem to apply - he is keen to beat the crap out of anyone near his chicks and he does screech while he does it!
-
Thank you, I kind of thought screeching was one of the reasons he got that name. ;D
-
Met BCCS on the Mckenzie Seeds parking lot (RCF's coffee break) had a good but short visit and gossip ;D sure was nice to see her again :)
When I first got down town, Brooklyn was in the nest box but didn't seem to be doing any cleaning lol, Hurricane was perched on the east light and when I was leaving Brooklyn was still at the nest box but on the perch, Hurricane was now on the south light.
I don't think any one of us has mentioned that there have been workmen installing new equipment on the tower and they were on the tower the day MacKenzie had her accident, since then we have never seen either adult on the tower.
-
So glad to hear that you and rcf had a visit with another Winnipeg peregrine phanatic, bccs, Rose! :D And nice to hear your report regarding Brooklyn & Hurricane... I was looking back at the July Brandon thread and I noticed that rcf spoke of some workmen climbing the tower on July 22nd. Is this the same tower that you are speaking about and if so, have they been working on installing the new equipment since then? What buliding is this tower on? I can't remember. :-\ I don't think it's the MacKenzie Seed Bldg. Is it the building to the right of the MacKenzie Seed Bldg., when looking at it from the parkade? :-\
-
And it was a grand visit but as Rose said, much too short. Amazing what can be shared in twenty minutes. ;D
-
So glad to hear that you and rcf had a visit with another Winnipeg peregrine phanatic, bccs, Rose! Yes this is the same tower, it's on the old MTS building which is directly across the street from the McK building, and there have been workmen there off and on ever since.
I guess we talked pretty fast, seemed to cover a lot of territory in the 20mins we had with BCCS, it was good to see her again.
-
Don't worry about the birds, they will go back to the tower, this is far from the first time workmen have been on the rooftops around the building. All of our pairs have lots of traffic on rooftops around their nests, its a function of urban nestsites and I have never seen a bird give up on a favoured perch unless its actually removed. He may not be on the tower as much because he doesn't have to defend the nestbox, he isn't as focussed on the tower OR he could be spending more time closer to Hurricane to reaffirm their pair bond - we've seen on a number of sites with failed nests over the last couple of years and it isn't unusual for the pair to start courting each other again - helps to solidify their pair bond. And since they don't have chicks to provide for, as hard as that sounds, Hurricane and Brooklyn get to spend their time replenishing the resources they expended producing/providing for/protecting Mac and Kenzie - they have used up alot of their personal resources this year. When it happened to Trey & Princess in 2008, they were back fast and had three healthy, smart chicks (Ty, Tupper & Vesper) the next year, so its a good bet that is what could happen next year.
-
Thanks for the encouraging post TPC. That was my first thought too about how P&T recovered and came back the next year better than ever. I hope it will be that way for this pair too. :-*
-
RCF and Rose, thanks for making an intense, tough trip fun. :-*
-
Yes, our visit was waaaay too short, and it was great to see bccs again! ;D And you'll never guess what we were talking about.........well maybe you will, FALCONS of course! :-* ;D
I had a couple of co-workers ask me who was that, so I told them they were just a couple falcon phanatics like me! ;D :-*
-
Thanks for the info regarding the solidification of the pair bond between Brooklyn and Hurricane, TPC! :)
-
:'( I'm on vacation and just got the chance to log in to see how things are going. I am so sad to hear that our little Mackenzie has died. :'(
RCF and Rose, and all involved, I thank you for your efforts and reports.
-
Here is what is happening in the McKenzie Seeds building over the next couple of years, thought some people may be interested. Last year, Tracy said the new owners were quite happy about having the Falcons at the site.

Very interesting.
-
Oh... I think I just might like to move into McKenzie Towers with my husband when we retire! 8) As long as the peregrines are there, of course! ;D
-
Wonder how the peregrines will take to having that much activity around - there doesn't seem to be a lot at the moment.
-

I don't think there is much outside activity involved, mostly consists of outside renovations. The birds have been there since the early 1990s when the building was much busier than it was prior to the sale so not sure that they will be too concerned. The Radisson has undergone major renovations on the floor right below the roof (pretty much completely stripped out and reconstructed) and the birds didn't even flinch ...
-
The building does really belong to the birds, afterall! ;)

Saw Hurricane about 6:45 this morning, perched on the north light and after I drove across the 8th Street bridge and got to parking lot at work, I could see Brooklyn perched on the west light. I didn't see them after work....... probably somewhere in the shade trying to stay 8)

Thanks for posting your sighting of Hurricane, rcf! :D
-
What a great way to start your day - with two sitings.
That's a great perch!
Thanks for the updates.
-
Just got home for a day or two, and am so saddened to hear the news about Kenzie.....not for lack of caring by Rose & RCF!!

Yes, at least one of them is still around. For the past week I have only seen one, but both may still be here........ saw one this morning perched on the south light. :)

Oh, that is good to hear, rcf! :D
-
Both of our birdies are still here. This morning Hurricane was perched on the ledge at bottom of clock tower and Brooklyn was swooping the pigeons. :) :)
-
Glad you are seeing them RCF. enjoy them while we can.
-
Was downtown later yesterday afternoon and somebirdy was sitting on the S of the Scotia building. It looked rather large so probably our resident female. Was in the same spot when I passed by at 8 last night too.

Nice to hear from you, BirdLover and great to hear that you saw one of the peregrines! :D Were you using your new spotting scope? :-\

Saw a birdie this morning on the north light. :) This afternoon (2:30) Hurricane was perched on the east louvered ledge and Brooklyn was on the west louvered ledge on the north side of the Scotia Bank building. I think it's the best place to stay cool and out of the sun. 8) It was very hot today.......wonder if they get a breeze through those louvers?

I saw our birdies this morning, one on the south light and the other on the west one, also saw Hurricane perched on mts tower later this afternoon. 8) :) I check everyday and some days I don't see them.
-
Great day for you rcf ;D
-
Glad you are still seeing them RCF, thank you for keeping us up to date :-*
-
Thanks RCF.
It is that time of year when we know they will leave soon. always so quiet and somber.
I s a new nest box in order for next year???
-
Saw somebirdie on the MTS tower yesterday morning. I think it was our girl as it was more brown than grey.
-
Today I watched Hurricane having a pigeon snack on the north west corner of the McKenzie roof. :) She flew over to the mts tower for a while and then flew off to the north until I couldn't see her anymore with my binoculars. I have only been seeing one falcon for the past week, I suspect Brooklyn may have gone south. :-\
-
A birdies' gotta do what a birdies' gotta do rcf. Nice that you still have one hanging around. :)
-
We'll just have to look forward to the next season, RCF, and hope for fewer accidents. It will come sooner than we think!

Smart girl - traveling early to get first pick of the prime spots and avoiding the rush.
-
Isn't it a bit early for one to leave? Of course, maybe the chill in the air had something to do with it. I just worry about the oil spill, sounds like it's worse than first indicated. If only there were some way to tell our birds to avoid that area.
-

Or gone west or north or south to wetlands for a pre-migratory feast. Not much movement of peregrines at the migration sites, so probably not left yet, ours tend not to leave particularly early ... with the chicks "gone", the adults don't necessarily hang out at the nestsite, Brandon does leave earlier than the Radisson most years, but not usually quite this early ...
-
I saw two peregrines today, one this morning around 11am. 8) :) It was flying quite low heading south over the parking lot where I work towards the McK building......only three blocks away. The other one was perched on the Scotia bank bldg around 3:30 this afternoon. I am not really sure if I was seeing one or two different falcons. :-\

After a week and a half of only seeing one birdie , I saw two at the same time today. :-* ;D This morning I saw one on the east light and it was still dark, so I don't know who it was. This afternoon Brooklyn was in the nest box and would disappear into the back of the box. I was thinking he flew away and then he would appear.....must of been rearranging the furniture. ;) Hurricane was perched on the mts tower, probably watching Brooklyn do the housework, ;D

This is great news, rcf! :D And what wonderful photos! :-* Brooklyn doing housework today? :o Well, according to TPC, so was Ivy, here in downtown Winnipeg! :) I guess the boys are cleaning up before they head south for the winter! 8)

Raining here today, its more like a misty rain than any thing else. Saw a falcon on the north light of the clock tower this afternoon in the rain, so one of them is still here. 8) :)
-
Great captures RCF...have a good one ;)
Cheers !

Thank you Dennis! ;D

Saw Hurricane on the east light of the clock tower this afternoon, so I went up to the parkade to see if I could get a picture. Brooklyn showed up while I was up on the parkade, he perched on the nest box and did a lot of preening...... no cleaning today. ;) I am always happy :-* to see that they are still here. I will probably have withdrawals after they leave to go south. ::) :(

Raining here again today from the northeast ::) and our birdies are perched where they aren't getting too wet. I took pics from inside the car.......didn't want to get camera wet.

Amazing photos, given the rain! ;D

Great photos RCF! You're keeping such a loving, careful watch over them :-* How could things not go better for them next year, with all the love and good wishes sent their way?!?
-
Great photos RCF. Thanks for keeping us informed on the Brandon pair. It is greatly appreciated.
-
Amazing photos, rcf, especially considering you took them from your car in the rain! :D I love the one of Brooklyn snuggled up against the wall, attempting to take refuge from the rain. 8)

Was downtown yesterday late AM/early PM. Hurricane was alternating between the MTS tower and the clock tower. When I first got up there she was just sitting on the tower shrouded in fog but as the fog burned away she moved around more. Got to see her cruise on by fairly close doing a loop from the MTS tower to the clock tower.
Was great to see that she's still here.

I saw Hurricane today perched up on the north side of the Scotia building on the louvered ledge. I think she had her lunch up there, because in one of the pics I took you could see some birdie parts. ;)

Hurricane is still here, she was perched on the Scotia building in the same spot as yesterday. Didn't see Brooklyn yesterday or today and I checked out all his hiding spots this afternoon, so not sure if he is still around. :-\

It was fairly warm here today and I wasn't surprised to see Hurricane perched on the north side of the Scotia building out of the sun, preening herself. 8) No sign of Brooklyn again today, I really am thinking he has gone south for the winter.

Had strict instructions to go down town this morning and check for birdies so I have. As of 11:00 am, I didn't see anyone except flying kraft dinner starting to settle on parts of the McK.building.I checked all the hiding places and no one, maybe RCF will see someone after work.Thank you to all who have given RCF and myself support and encouragement this past unhappy year and I know that next year will be much better :)

Yes, rcf, it is really evident that they are "a part of your family". You and Rose have shown such love and caring for them. :-*

Just back from tour of down town,no birdies seen :'(

A sad time for Rose and RCF :'(, but happiness and hope, I'm sure, that the birds they've watched so dilligently and loyally will return in the spring to begin another family. Safe migration Hurricane and Brooklyn! :) :-* :-*

Well, I was quite surprised to see a falcon perched up on the north side of the Scotia building today, I thought they had all left. :-* ;D It was Hurricane, she was preening her lovely self. Whenever the camera comes into focus it makes a little beep and seems to get Hurricane's attention, she stops what she's doing and looks around or directly at me. :) 8)
This is the crabby look that I know for sure is Hurricane :-*

Hurricane must have left on or just after Oct 8th because I have not seen her since then....hope she has a safe journey there and back. :-*
I was on the parkade today and some thing made the flying KD scatter and then I spotted a birdie perched on the top aerial of the mts tower, same shape, but much smaller than a peregrine. Anyone want to take a guess as to what it might be........ maybe a kestral? :-\
