Jewel's den cam is now online! :D
http://www.bear.org/livecams/jewel-den-cam.php
Info about Jewel below, was posted on the website today...
"3-year-old Jewel is the daughter of June and younger sister to Lily. She and her brother Jordan are the 2 cubs appearing in the final scenes of the BBC’s ‘Bearwalker of the Northwoods’ and also the 2 yearlings playing with Gordon Buchanan’s camera equipment in the BBC’s ‘Bear Family & Me’.
Jewel may possibly have her first litter of cubs this winter."
-
The biologists at the NABC have pretty much confirmed that Jewel is going to have cubs and it will likely be in about 2 weeks. :D
-
According to last evening's update from the NABC website, Jewel is probably in labour this afternoon! 8) Sure does look as if she might be! :D Close to 5000 viewers from around the world watching her den cam at the moment! :o
-
Still no bear cubs for Jewel, yet. :(
-
Well it has been 3 days since the last post and still no cubs. Checked out the cam and Jewel appeared to be sleeping.
-
I know, LinderLou, still no cubs. :( Hopefully, this weekend. Seems like an awfully long labour, if you ask me. But it could be very soon. According to the website...
"Jewel’s sister Lily gave birth on January 21 and 22. Jewel’s mother June and grandmother Shadow have each given birth on or before January 19."

Jewel had 2 cubs this morning - 7:24 and 8:40 central time :-*
You can hear the cubs underneath Jewel

Yes! Very exciting news! :D She may have had 3 cubs, but it has not yet been confirmed. My Kinderchicklets will be so excited to hear this news at school tomorrow. Hopefully, with luck, they may be able to see one of them.

Birth of second cub at 4:50 on video
Nine minute video http://youtu.be/eognFId4gFM
After a long-awaited birth, Jewel has her cubs. We think 2 were born. We will all listen to see if we can hear three distinct vocalizations at the same time for confirmation but for now we know she has two!
-
According to the website blog, it sounds as if Jewel just has 2 cubs. My Kinderchicklets have not yet seen them, since Jewel keeps them well tucked under her but they sure have heard their cries! :o

The view from Jewel's den cam will be out of wack for about a week. Yesterday, the research team trecked out to her den to reposition and clean the lens and this is what happened...
"Our attempts to improve the den cam image today only made things worse. Jewel bumped the camera as soon as we left, leaving us with sound and no image. Well actually we have an image… an impressive view of the den wall... Jewel became interested in what we were doing and decided to come out. That’s when we normally would have left and come back later when Jewel was settled back in. But we can’t work as freely and sensitively as before. Our new research permit reads “Dens may be visited no more than once per week.” We are forced to pack more into a single den visit than we normally would. Leaving the job undone now means leaving it undone till next week—not just overnight. It means data collection by the Den-Watch Team, education of students in 500 classrooms, and our collective learning is put on hold. We’re stuck with the current view until next week."

There is speculation that Jewel has a male and a female cub, from the den cam watchers observations and reports. 8)

Jewel's cubs now have names - Herb and Fern. Their eyes are now open and they are becoming quite active. Update from the website in early March...
"We made a snap decision and named the cubs—Herb and Fern. A dear Lily Fan said she didn’t like the name Herb because it sounds like an old guy. Lynn, who picked that name, asked what she has against old guys! Sue, who picked the name Fern, seems to have picked a more popular name. Both are bear foods, like Jewel’s full name Jewelweed"

As of today, Jewel's Den Cam is up & running for the season. She has denned with her yearlings, Fern & Herbie...
