Will be nice to see who turns up this year after Hurricane & Wingo Starr's successful year last year!
Hurricane usually doesn't turn up early in April, so we may have about a month and a half until the peregrines are home in Brandon.
Also news that RCF passed along - the McKenzie Seeds Building is once again for sale. Might take a long time to sell or maybe there is someone out there that has just been waiting for it to come on the market.

Yippie 8)
It looks like Wingo Starr has made it back from migration, I got a partial band with a K and 8. Wingo Starr has a black/ red band K/98.

This is exciting news, RCF! Thanks for the post and again your great photos. ;D ;D ;D

Wonderful news

Whoo hooo! Well done RCF! Welcome back Wingo!
Now we just need Hurricane to arrive home ... she was hatched in 2007 so while she is an older bird her mother Princess proved 13 isn't old either!!
May be a longer wait than we'd like however - Hurricane has never (as I recall) been an early bird in the spring!!
-
Wingo had a very full crop this morning.

Hurricane was back March 29 last year, that's early for her. Usually it's not until the first week in April when she arrives. :)

Oh I'm so glad you had her return date - I couldn't find it anywhere in my records!! ;D
And yes, the 29th is early for her ... did Wingo turn up before or after? I have this vague memory they arrived about the same time ... but I may be mixing it up with another year and another male ...

We saw him about two weeks later than her, but I really think he was here a week before that and interacting with Hurricane. She had been perching on the very top of the clock tower roof peak for days and noticed she watched the sky a lot from there. It was almost like she was making herself very visible to any potential mate.

Interesting stuff. Thanks for all your info!

Wingo
I see he has no more brown feathers on his back.

We have a female as of today, but I am not sure who. I never got a look to see if she has a band. She is not very accommodating. This bird has a lot of speckles on her breast whereas Hurricane only has a few. In some photos it looks like her and others not so much! :-\

Looks like your visitor is unbanded .... just to make things interesting :)
There was an unbanded female who visited at this time of the year back in 2017 I believe .... the year we pulled all the sticks out of the nestbox ... I think it was that year at least ...

I did noticed she may not have bands, she still wasn't very accommodating. :) This is the 2017 unbanded female, they are different.

There are chicks from the Saskatoon nest that don't get banded, could be one of them ... or one of the few we haven't been able to band ... or a lady who's origins will remain a mystery ...
Gotta love the spring! ;D
-
Well, it's still early yet and Hurricane isn't really late. ;)
-
So much happening right now! It amazes me how they manage to come back all that way, and consistently close to the same dates. Thanks for the pictures and updates.
-
Thanks for the pictures & info. It’s getting very interesting....hurry home Hurricane!
-
Yes, Hurricane better hurry up if she's coming home! :)
Well, Wingo was not wasting any time, he and the newbie mated this morning. I believe he was trying to get her into the nest box. I caught the tail end of the shenanagans with my camera. ;D

"tail-end" ;D like that ;)
Seems like all the boys are in a hurry - Hart's been working it since he got back in town and Pip has been working to catch up!
-
Still the same two birds here, doing what they do. ;) The newbie had a Meadowlark this afternoon....not sure if she caught it or Wingo brought it for her. He did have messy beak so he probably got it for her.

Welcome home Hurricane :-* :-* :-* You must be relieved RCF! Hopefully the other female went peacefully and won't give her any grief!
Stay safe out there!

Such great news! I hope the other female realized she was trespassing & moved on without incident! :)
-
Welcome home Hurricane. Great photos RCF. She definitely has attitude. ;D

::) :P ;D
I have to say that Hurricane and Wingo look so much alike from far away and it seems I have mixed them up. This post I have quoted is actually Wingo, not the newbie(on post) and Hurricane (on green ledge).
So pretty much Hurricane has been back since April 2nd. ;)

Well this is excellent news! Well done RCF!
I'm having the same problem with Ella and Pip - they look a bit different but they are so close in size that its taking a bit of time to get good a identifying them as they bomb past the camera or have their tail feathers obscuring the balcony cam!

RCF - was having a look at the photos and can see that both birds have breast speckles - and it looks like the speckles go up higher on Wingo than on Hurricane - is that the case? Or is it just the way it looks in the photos? They are very good photos :)

Will get back to you again if I still have questions!

Not much going on here and I only check every couple of days. You know a drive by, with...... maybe a few quick stops. ::) Anyway it looks like Hurricane is thinking about eggs in the near future. She's been perched at the nest box or very near it for the last few days. Wingo is never far away. :-* She was sitting at the bottom of the clock tower and Wingo underneath her on the roofed window where the camera was.

What do you think RCF? To me that looks like Hurricane in the midst of egg-laying or taking a wee break in the morning sun at the start of incubation ...

I'm thinking she has an least one egg. :) I haven't been down there much this spring, so my above photos are what I've been seeing for the past week. I haven't seen anyone laying down in the box yet but Wingo is in there a lot. ;D

Whoo-hoo, well done Hurricane & Wingo!
So nice to see Hurricane with multiple chicks after her years with Sol. Not his fault, some pairings just aren't as successful as others - and some years are harder than others!
Nice that the chicks are small, given the storms rolling across southern Manitoba. Forecast says Brandon might not get as much rain as other parts of the province, but winds are always an issue - fortunately, it looks like the winds will swing more westerly during the overnight hours. Hurricane has had lots of experience - besides, she was hatched the year of the Elie Tornado, so to say she was born to handle storms couldn't be more appropriate!

You are getting to be a pro at spotting "mammals on the menu" RCF - you caught one of the Ella bringing in an unidentified rodent (given its size, it can stay unidentified thank you very much :-X) at the Radisson shortly after hatch there! Twice in one year - that's a record for us, last time we had a rodent confirmed (I believe) was when Smiley was the around - that was 5 ish years ago!
-
Congrats Wingo & Hurricane! Not sure about the menu though, Wingo.....

It's all by chance! :) I could tell he had something different up there, it just looked weird. Not the normal way prey looks! I didn't know it was a gopher until I was home and had a look at the photos. :o
I couldn't figure out what Ella had either. Looking at it now I think it may have been a chipmunk. :-\

I think that 2 chicks is the magic number this year ... or so far at least! Hurricane and Wingo obviously have 2 chicks and we know Ella and Pip have two. We aren't positive but we do have one other nest but we were sure they were nesting until a little fuzzy head (two actually) popped up on a blurry photo. The site is vulnerable to predation and so we hope they will be okay through the next week of exceedingly hot weather!
We of course have our fingers crossed for all the kids - not sure Hurricane's and Wingo's kids need the luck - they seem to be doing very well in their parents' care!! Box faces east so they have shade during the hottest part of day - and though there is a wall on the south end of the box the wind is forecast from the south-east so there should be a breeze for the chicks this afternoon! Would be nice if the forecast for rain later in the day comes true ... think the Brandon 2 might just be old enough to do a little dancing in the rain ...
-
It stormed here last evening and it was raining horizontal for a bit! It was from the northwest so the falcons may have got a bit wet.

The box is closer to the south end of the east wall at McKenzie Seeds so I'm hoping the building provided good protection from the driving rain - a little wet and cool wouldn't be a bad thing given the heat and humidity, but nice if the chicks don't have to get bounced around in their nestbox. They are young enough still that their default position in bad weather will be down on their bellies in the most sheltered corner and likely Hurricane if not both Hurricane and Wingo in with them or at the nestbox with them. The McKenzie Seeds nestbox has certainly seen its fair share of crappy weather, many of them during Hurricane's tenure, and everyone has done well. With luck there will be some more rain today to give the Brandon kids a break from the humidity ...

I love the pictures RCF. Thanks for taking them and sharing them.
-
Cute pictures, especially the last one.....what are you squawking about?!?! Meanwhile the pictures before he/she is making his/her presence known! ;D
-
I love the pictures thank you! I love to see their curiosity, staring out at the world!
-
Oh, that glint in their eye - I think those two are going to be a handful!!
Going to keep my fingers crossed that they will be cooperative photo subjects RCF!
Still lots of fuzz on those two, you are going to have another 7-10 days before they fledge I suspect - longer perhaps if they are girls ....
-
I think Wingo took something in the nest just as we arrived this morning. We could only see one of the chicks for a bit...probably self feeding. ;D The other one was yelling at the front of the box, maybe sees Wingo across the street. Hurricane was on the light above.

They definitely look like girls - nice balance for the 2 Radisson boys!
And the ages would confirm that - the chicks are 41/42 days old today, typical fledging age for standard size female chicks. Pre-Wingo female chicks were smaller and more likely to jump with their brothers. Wingo is shaking up the gene pool.
-
Well these two were still in the box this afternoon and it looks like they have different coloured legs from each other. :)

Foot colour is as a result of the food they are eating. Birds in captive situations - like rehab - tend to have paler feet. Wild birds eating wild food have bright yellow feet, it is paler when they are young, brighter as they get older. Its why we try to make sure birds in care have quail to eat, closest thing to wild birds that we can provide them with. Why one chick's feet are yellower than the other, maybe one is a couple of days older - or better at getting first dibs on food or I just don't know. I can say that in a couple of months when they are hunting food on their own, chances are you won't be able to tell them apart by foot colour :)
Its a cool photo and a great catch RCF!
-
These two have fledged! ;D
One was on the Annex building on the west side, the other one was on the southeast corner of the lower roof this morning.

I like family scenes - they happen so rarely. But best of all, I'm glad to see the "girls" are on another building AND with each other. First hurdles of fledging seem not to be posing a huge challenge for these two (knock on wood) - long may it continue!!! ;D
-
I watched one of these girls fly from the Mts building to the top ledge of the Scotia building after she tried to perch on a window sill on the McKenzie building this morning. We had to lie down after that! ;D The other one was preening on the west side of the McKenzie roof. So they seem to be doing all right so far. :)

Maybe a bit of a Wow moment! ;D
Wingo downed a pigeon which ended up on the west side of the McKenzie building in the back lane. The chick followed where the pigeon was but first she flew down from the walkway into the fenced area where the old dock is. She tried to go through the fence to get the pigeon...that didn't work! ::) She managed to fly up on the fence and down to the lane to get at the injured bird. This chick looked like it had food in it's crop already and she never did eat the pigeon!
When she left she flew up on to the back of my truck and then off to the northeast!

I went downtown this morning to check after yesterdays nasty storm. It's raining but I saw both adults and one chick perched. I think there is only the one chick around now, I haven't seen them both together since July 28th. Maybe she's like her mother and disappears after fledge! ???

We haven't had a chick come to play for a few weeks now ... would be nice to see one or two or any out this way. But it is that time of the year.
Will be interested to see when the adults leave - the Farmers Almanac is predicting a "snow train" across the Prairies (there was snow in the Pas in the last week) but don't know when - I kept missing that part of the story when it can on the radio! Usually we have at least 1 bird around until mid-October, interesting to see if that happens again this year.
RCF - Question - the last three of your most recent photos are of the chick that has been around - yes? Can't see a band on photo 1 and Wingo's bands looked to be in good shape last I saw them - and his plumage was starting to transition more to the adult colours ...

Hurricane is still here but not sure about Wingo, the last time I saw him was September 26th. I have not seen a chick since the last time I posted seeing one. ???
Someone posted on Facebook that they saw and photographed a juvenile peregrine falcon near Killarney....maybe one of the chicks from here. ;)

So sad to read about the fire. Especially on Christmas Eve. :( Fortunately, no injuries, no tragedies. No PF's.
Merry Christmas TCP, Dennis and all of you here on the MFCF.
