Title: Great Horned Owls - Wisconsin / WE Energy
Post by: Alison on January 09, 2010, 20:26
I have posted some pics in the past of peregrines visiting the Great Horned Owl nest in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. I don't think there will be any more visits for some time -- the GHOs are back, and the female is already incubating at least one egg.

Have I mentionned that GHOW are the peregrine's main predator ?

I was wondering who would bring that point out about the GHO's being a pergrine's enemy.

It used to be the nest for the Perigrines at Oak Creek now the Falcons have a nest for them self but the Falcons go there alot yet after the chicks have fledged also have seen juvie there once in awhile after they leave their own nest the nests aren't to far apart really

It was originally a peregrine nest box, used by peregrines from 1998 to 2007, during which time 38 chicks were raised. In 2008 a pair of GHOs took over the nest, so in March 2008 a new nest box was installed for the peregrines. As soon as the two owlets that year fledged, the peregrines moved into the new box and started laying eggs (after flying by to check on the owl nest to make sure the owls were gone). The same thing happened this year -- the peregrines did not occupy their box until they were sure that the three owlets from this year had fledged.

The GHOs have owlets -- not sure exactly when they hatched, but there are at least two owlets.

Mama owl with the very cute owlets:
