Since multiple birds have been spotted downtown, I have started checking this area. I haven't spotted any birdies yet.
TPC, will there be a nestbox put up on the B&B again?
-
I have also been checking the area and the old location as well. Any chance they might return to the old "neighborhood?
-
Not so much as a peep in West Winnipeg - today's snow just proved there have been no visitors - it remained pristine all day.
Last year Beatrix was the first to return here and she didn't arrive until March 27th. (Princess was the first home on the 23rd in 2014).
So no one is late yet ...
-
TPC, will there be a nestbox put up on the B&B again?
Unlikely but we ask each year nonetheless.
Having said that, the new site has worked very well so far and, knock-on-wood, it will continue to do so.
-
Thanks for the update TPC.
Just curious. It was definitely easier to watch the chicks at the new nest site.
-
Nothing this morning at this site then as Dennis and I were chatting we were wondering if the south winds would blow more birds into town and then we both logged onto the camera at West Winnipeg in time to see a bird, then another bird then a third bird. Wind is blowing like stink but there are two females have a tiff over the nestbox. Too windy for a real fight, we have seen all the birds get blown right off the building - without any help from their opponent. So figure it will be mostly aerial flights and some careful sparring in the box.
We can see that both the females have bands, we think they are black but can't tell for sure, the light sucks as it is overcast.
More news as we have it ....
-
Went back to check the recorder and first sign of a bird was at 1402h today. There must have been at least two because the bird on-camera was yapping at someone in the air above. That bird had a black band on its left leg - same as Beatrix. The second bird also has a dark band on its left leg but couldn't say for sure if it was all black or black and something else. Wind is brutal at the moment, too much for the birds (they were getting blown right off their feet and off the box/building) and for cameras - both the webcams and Dennis and the Wowzers. Next few days look to be pretty much the same (windy) so may take us a bit longer than usual to ID new arrivals at this site. But these birds are back pretty much bang on time so we have 3-4 weeks before they begin nesting.
-
1858h
Bird is back - can't say if it is female 1 or female 2 - think female 1 though ... another bird sped around the building a few minutes ago, no idea who it was though ...
-
1914h CDT
It has started to rain in West Winnipeg and the female at the box has decided to make it hard for anyone to get into her box. She's moved out of the rain and into the box - another bird still flying past at semi-regular intervals ...
-
The West Winnipeg pair (identities not confirmed yet) are back again today and making themselves very comfortable at the nestsite. Still haven't gotten a look at their bands but I'm checking the cams and Dennis is wandering around with Wowzer. This way we can keep an eye on all the nestsites and help to determine if we are looking at the same birds or different ones. In any case, the light is better (partly sunny here) and though the wind is up still, we are having a bit better luck getting a look at the birds both from the ground and via the web.
More news as we have it!
-
Here's hoping the female PF is Beatrix. :-\
-
Here's hoping the female PF is Beatrix. :-\
The WW female has speckles on her breast like Princess but the speckles on the sides of her breast (think shoulder area on a person) are noticeable - haven't noticed shoulder speckles on Princess particularly but the WW female's ones seem more pronounced. I was looking at photos and it seems that Beatrix's were like that - but it could be common among Princess' female offspring - Hurricane is the only one we see regularly and she's Princess/Trey, not Princess/Ivy. We'll just have to see but this female seems pretty comfortable here and with the male here so there is at least a decent chance. They have only been home for a couple of days, we'll see what the next week of observations brings!
-
Bird, not quite sure who was on the corner of the roof at the nestbox from 0642h to 1152h this morning. We are going to have to clean off the cover on the camera, just enough build-up to make it tough to tell if there are speckles on a bird's breast !! By size, I think it was the female, not a big female but looked too bulky to be a male, particularly if the male is Beau who is larger than our Manitoba males usually are.
-
I missed seeing them this weekend. So after reading TPC's descriptions of the goings on, I raced out to see what I could find after work. Took my new lens, wanting to play with it.
Found one peregrine on the Diner. Discovered if I moved around a little I could get both the peregrine and moon in my shot. So I was out there merrily clicking away, trying to get artistic, when the peregrine decided to do a little shifting. 1) Here, look at my right leg it has a silver band on it. 2) & 3) Shift and stretch left leg down, oh look, see my nice black leg band. I'll show you the rivet attachment and maybe a "4". 4) I moved a little closer, but by now she has settled back into position and just looks at me over her shoulder. Still learning how much moving around a little changes the light in the pictures.

Thanks for those Dupre. Great pics. Nice that she deigned to pose for you too. :)
-
Great pics dupre!! :-*
-
LOVE your pics of the PF & the moon in the background, dupre! :D
-
;D dupre your photos are nothing less than spectacular. Love your narration as well. Thanks for sharing.
-
Well done with the photos Dupre - not sure about the band number though - Beatrix's band is very scraped up so difficult to read so the line between the digits is consistent but the rest is just not clear enough. Not your fault, we had to work very hard with this bird last year and Wowzer wasn't getting the band number for a long time. It's a combination of light, distance and a faded/worn band. Thank you for trying and coming awfully close though! Beatrix isn't out of the running though - the line between the digits is consistent with her band number and the coloured band is on the same leg.
-
We may have a change in resident males here ... I've been watching the two birds - male and female - she's in the box and it looks like a black band on her still but the male looks like Beau but not like Beau and his band looks a bit too dark to be red ... but we are still working on it and we'll know soon.
-
The mystery is deepening at West Winnipeg - black banded birds for sure. The band on what we believe is the male is what is interesting, we have a couple of possibilities both from Manitoba - problem is that we aren't sure of the one of the digits and we have to be sure about that digit.
Now, having said that, we have other photos/images of a "male" that looks a bit different, so 1 male or 2? Or 2 males then, 1 male now?
Oh, we do love a mystery ;D
-
Went out early this evening and spotted one bird standing in the nestbox. Could just make out the head above the edge of the building. Stayed for a few minutes then decided to see if we could find any other birds.
Found another on the Bleachers a little lower than where Beau and Jules used to like to sit and watch the world go round. Just as we found this bird--it was off. The bird from the nestbox was chasing this one around. Didn't hear any calling sounds or yelling sounds from the two as they flew around the Bleachers. Around and around they went, then they disappeared. Oh, one of the birds landed on the top of the Bleachers. This is not the bird I took pictures of yesterday. This bird has a whiter breast with less speckles and the white on the cheek has an indent like the top of a heart shape. Looking around we found the second had headed to the Tower. As we headed home, we spotted the one that had been on the Bleachers was now on the Diner.

That's exactly what Dennis and I have been saying all day. Hopefully between all our photos and what video I have we may be able to narrow down who's who and when they were here/there.
-
Glad I could back you and Dennis up on this.
Eagerly anticipating confirmed results from the two of you.
-
Well, we have more information as of today and thanks to Dennis and Wowzer.
The female has been confirmed as our resident female from last year - Beatrix. The male around at the moment is the 2nd male to been seen here - he has a much whiter breast than the 1st male. Looks a lot like Beau but finer. Dennis got a partial band number photo which caused us a little surprise - only three possibilities, all Manitoba males: Brooklyn, Ty or Tupper. Thought it was most likely going to be Tupper based on that photo. For those of you who don't remember Tupper, he is brother to Ty who has been hanging out north of Winnipeg in Selkirk with an unbanded female by the name of Paris. He is also the brother of Vesper who died in San Antonio when she was caught in the backwash of a jet plant taking off. Ty, Tupper and Vesper were from Trey's and Princess' last nest together in 2009. We really hoped it wasn't Brooklyn, he's been such a great resident male out in Brandon but he hasn't been seen out there yet, so anything is possible. Wowzer solved the mystery this afternoon, it looks like Ty has jilted Paris in favour of Beatrix. But, we have had a change in males here once since the birds arrived on March 28th so we'll keep a watch on this site in case there is more excitement in store.
-
I'm relieved to find out that it's Ty here rather than Brooklyn. I have to admit I thought the photo I took yesterday looked a lot like Brooklyn from Brandon. If you check out RCF's photo from May 10th last year, the cheek area is very similar, as is the white breast. I was almost afraid to mention the similarity in look.
-
Brooklyn, Beau and Ty are all a bit similar. Ty however is the smallest of the bunch and when he flies its like watching an arrow shoot past. He's definitely his father Trey's son - in appearance more so than his brother Ivy. We've never had the opportunity to watch his parenting skills in detail but he has had kids before so all should go well. Will be interesting how he stacks up against his brother's and his father's reputations.
And I'm very glad it wasn't Brooklyn too, I'm not a fan of pairs breaking up if they have been nesting successfully. Fortunately it doesn't happen often and Brooklyn is a solid parent and hopefully that is getting passed along to his offspring at McKenzie Seeds!
-
If I recall correctly, Beau did not show up till around April 6th last year. That means that it is still early days here and there may be more drama before the final pair is decided.

Absolutely Dupre ... early days yet ...

Galleries have been started for the Peregrine 2015 season http://www.pbase.com/photosbydennis/peregrines_2015 a few more photos will be added in the days to come for both the Logan and West Wpg. galleries. After that photos will be added as they become available.
Sit back and enjoy the season.

Thanks for clearing up the Brooklyns, RCF.

Saturday, about 1:15 pm, Beatrix and Try were on the south sign on the Diner. Ty's white breast was very noticeable.
-
Today, we went out and spotted Beatrix on the south end of the Bleachers. Another birder that was in the area mentioned that he had seen both birds together and one had flown away very quickly. Beatrix had followed and landed where we found her and there she stayed.
-
Could hear one P.F. chattering near the Wal-Mart on Portage Ave. near the perimeter.
-
So, if I have my genealogy right, then Ty is Beatrix's uncle and also her half-brother.
Princess and Trey had Ivy in 2005
Princess and Trey had Ty in 2009
Princess and Ivy had Beatrix in 2011

I think you're right, dupre... And the soap opera continues. LOL! ;)

Okay, found out today that Beau will not be returning to this site this year. Hopefully, everything goes well for him and we see him next year.
So, if I have my genealogy right, then Ty is Beatrix's uncle and also her half-brother.
Princess and Trey had Ivy in 2005
Princess and Trey had Ty in 2009
Princess and Ivy had Beatrix in 2011
That essentially means that Beatrix has 75% of her genes from Princess and 25% of her genes from Trey. Ty is 50% from Princess and 50% from Trey.
If Beatrix and Ty have chicks, they will have 62.5% of their genes from Princess and 37.5% from Trey.
Therefore Beatrix and Ty are simply Princess and Trey gene delivery systems. ?? :P (Don't get me wrong, these are GREAT genes).
Oy... I'm giving myself a headache.

LOL! Glad you're the one thinking about all this, dupre! ;)

This was on the CBC site this morning.

Thursday evening, we found both Ty and Beatrix on the south sign of the Diner.
To me, Ty looks much smaller than Beau did. Maybe it is just an illusion because he has such a white breast, but he looks like a small peregrine.

No illusion, he is a small peregrine - small for a male at least. The last of Trey's and Princess' kids in fact.

Amazing photos as always Dennis! Thank you for sharing.
-
;D Close to 9:30 A.M. I was in the WW area and I was treated to a beautiful aerial display, my first. So beautiful, so graceful. On my way home, I saw somebirdie sitting on the NW corner of the building. :) :)
-
Dennis, your photos are nothing short of spectacular. Thanks so much for sharing.
-
Beatrix and Ty are stuck like glue to one another, it's interesting to watch. Beau was always very attentive with Beatrix but not like Ty. Now this might change as Ty and Beatrix get more used to each other but for the moment they hang out together most the time - he's small so its hard to see him in the nestbox when he's sitting and looking out - same with another couple of roost spots nearby. Maybe it's just because its a new relationship but I'm not sure, what we saw between Paris and Ty was the same kind of thing - granted we often couldn't find them but when we did it was always the two of them together.
Its fun having a new pair to watch ... even though we had three last year! ;)
-
Yesterday about mid-afternoon, we spotted what looked like a head peeking above the nest box. When we got out the camera and zoomed in, we discovered it was a whole bird laying on the top of the nest box. Because he was so small, I'm going to assume it was Ty. Made me wonder if Beatrix was in the box. We didn't find her anywhere else we looked.
-
You mostly don't find this nestbox without either Beatrix or Ty in it. Yesterday it looked like Ty was keeping the nestbox safe from the wind. Now it is Beatrix.
We have two cameras at this site - one that is movable and we have it pointed at a favourite perch. At least half the time, we have a bird on each cam. I don't know that we have ever had a pair that like to stay so close to each other so much of the time. Will be interesting to see if this persists once there are eggs in the box ...
-
Looks like Ty has once again parked himself in the nestbox right in the nest scrape. He did this when we had the high winds a week ago too. There is no egg under him but he sure looks like there ought to be. Will be interesting to watch him when he does have an egg to protect - we know he knows how, he's had at least three offspring over the years, likely 3x that many but we haven't been able to find them.
-
Ty is turning out to be an interesting bird and he is rubbing off on Beatrix it seems. Last night he went into the nestbox at 2030h and he didn't come out again until 0500 this morning and it was only for a few minutes and he was back again. Its a bit like when Smiley was sleeping in the nestscrape last time it snowed - but I've never had a bird spend that much time in the box unless they had eggs/young or were injured (Princess did this a couple of years ago). I'm glad these two are that comfortable in the nestbox that they feel they can curl up and go to sleep for hours not because they have to (for the eggs/chicks) but because they want to.
-
First egg for Beatrix and Ty as of yesterday morning. I was on the road for work yesterday so I didn't find it until the this morning. Because of the box's position, we can't see into the box in the afternoon if it is a sunny day, so we'll be sure to check on them in the mornings for the next week.
Next egg should arrive tomorrow, a third perhaps the 27th and incubation should begin then. Since they are both relatively young birds, I would expect to see a full nest here, so a fourth egg on the 28th. If this timeline is correct, expect to see chicks the first week of June.
-
YAY!!! Way to go Ty and Bea!
(sorry Paris :()

First egg for Beatrix and Ty as of yesterday morning.
Ditto on the Yay!!! :)

We have egg # 2 this morning !
-
We have egg # 2 this morning !
Great news! :D
-
As of yesterday morning, we had four eggs here and incubation is in full swing. Interestingly, or to me at least, Ty is more like his father and grand-father than any of their other sons/grandsons in that he is incubating a great deal. T-Rex used to push his females off eggs so he could incubate, and Trey had worked out an agreement with both of his mates, share and share alike. Looks like Beatrix and Ty have a lot of the best qualities of both their parents!!
-
As I was returning from shopping around 9:45, I was able to catch a view of both Beatrix and Ty. One, I think Beatrix on the East side roof and Ty sitting on a letter on the South side. ;D
-
...Looks like Beatrix and Ty have a lot of the best qualities of both their parents!!
That's great to hear! Then they should have a very successful nest this year! :D
-
Yesterday afternoon, we were out and about and spotted Beatrix at the Tower just a little before 4 pm.
-
Spotted Beatrix at the Tower again yesterday afternoon.
-
Ty and Beatrix appear to be pretty evenly dividing the incubating duties right from the beginning. This morning was particularly cute, he didn't want to leave (or get up from his comfy scrape) and he kept turning his head away and ignoring Beatrix when she came to take over. He stayed "in bed" until 0830h then they traded spots with her have a bit of a yak at him as he leisurely left.
-
;D
-
Why is it that all the fathers get scolded for wanting to incubate or brood? :-\
Pour guys! ::)
-
Well, I would say since the beginning of time the men hunt, work, forage for food. We, as women nest and yes, care for the kids. However, we ARE in the 21st century and the times, they are changing. He is up for change, she, not so much! ::)
-
Why is it that all the fathers get scolded for wanting to incubate or brood? :-\
Pour guys! ::)
Perhaps more waking him up rather than scolding him ... he seems often to be napping when he's incubating. ;) They really are a lovely couple to watch, very in sync with one another

Just like Bogie & Becall! LOL! ;)

How did Beatrix and Ty do through the storm yesterday, TPC?
-
How did Beatrix and Ty do through the storm yesterday, TPC?
Better than the Radisson birds but how much better I can't say for sure. Their box faces north so they had rain and snow driving into their box. They do however have much better protection from the wind so they were able to tuck down and ride it out. Won't know until next week when their chicks are slated to being hatching though. They have been very dedicated so I'm hoping for the best here.
-
Anticipation builds as we await to see how our feathered WW falcons hunkered down in the wake of yesterday's severe weather.

Anticipation builds as we await to see how our feathered WW falcons hunkered down in the wake of yesterday's severe weather.
I watched a shift change a bit earlier and they were pretty darn quick, eggs weren't uncovered for more than 15 seconds. Usually these two are much more leisurely about the whole process.
-
All the snow has gone from the nestbox and Beatrix is napping on the eggs.
And the sun just came out .... ;D
-
Talons crossed. Thanks for sharing, TPC! :)
-
Let's hope all is good at this site!
-
One thing about this warm weather, it does make the adults more active - the eggs don't need to be incubated so tightly or they will be too warm so there is always a lot of position changes which are easy to mistake for the kinds of spinning we see adults on hatching chicks do. The light makes a very deep shadow as well so it is hard to see fine detail at times though there is no mistaking an extra patch of fuzzy white when they arrive.
-
fingers crossed for a hatch soon
-
We still have all 4 eggs in place as Beatrix got up to stretch her legs. Then back to the task at hand.
-
We still have all 4 eggs in place as Beatrix got up to stretch her legs. Then back to the task at hand.
Today is day 30 for incubation, mostly they hatch between 32 and 34 days so we over the weekend is most likely. As I recall, Beatrix's last batch all hatched out overnight so if you can only check the forum once a day, mornings are likely your best bet for new news.
-
Sorry, thought this was day 32...see what happens when you retire :P

Sorry, thought this was day 32...see what happens when you retire :P
Love your photos Dennis, especially 0017-1.
Also it’s great to know you’re keeping a close watch on the eggs (nothing wrong if just a bit early). :)
-
We have our first hatch - at least one chick today and surprise, surprise, Ty was the one who was on the tot when s/he made his appearance. He wouldn't get off when Beatrix came to relieve him and she didn't do a Princess and push him off. She hung out a bit in the box and when it was obvious he wasn't going anywhere, she left and came back twice more over the next couple of hours. Then the eggshell appeared from under Ty, he did a wee bit of nibbling and then Beatrix arrived and he relinquished their chick and the 3 other eggs to her. Chick wasn't very old, not a bright white yet so the feathers weren't completely dry yet. Expect we should have a full house by Monday - last year all of Beatrix's eggs hatched out within 36/48 hours of each other.
-
Modern dad :-*

Great news!!!
This ex-west Winnipegger is happy!

How nice to hear that Ty was given an opportunity to experience the first hatch. It’s just so sweet whenever a female falcon allows the male to participate - especially to the extent that Beatrix allowed for their first hatch. :D
This would be a great pair to watch on a cam!
-
Congrats to Beatrix & Ty, on their 1st hatch! ;D
-
Very happy to hear this news. Well done Ty!
-
Wonderful!!
-
Still just one chick when the sun moved far enough west to obscure our camera view.
Will be able to check again tomorrow morning.
-
Quite possibly as before, in the morning you will post....and then there were four!
-
What great news!
Did Beatrix get her fair share of the egg shell after Ty did his nibbling?
-
Did Beatrix get her fair share of the egg shell after Ty did his nibbling?
Doesn't look like, the shell looks the same as when Ty left. Not all birds nibble on their eggs, or probably more accurately, not all birds nibble all the time on the eggshells.
-
Still just the one chick so far as I can see. Perhaps the cold at laying and during incubation was much worse than we anticipated. Will just have to see what happens at Logan and McKenzie Seeds to know for sure I guess.
-
I think perhaps egg 2 has hatched - hard to see them in the box at the moment, the parents love to be in the way!!!
-
Few more photos have been added to the West Wpg. Gallery.

Dennis confirmed that the second egg hatched last night - yippeee!
Hopefully if the other two do hatch, they will do so later tomorrow after the rain. Saves their parents some extra work and worry.
-
This evening the wind is supposed to be north and have gusts of up to 70 km. Rain is to be going sideways according to the weather people. Does this nest have some protection against these types of winds?
-

Yes and no. Nestbox is open to the north and east - that way the sun comes in in the morning but the chicks don't bake too much through the rest of the day. So the "no" part is that the box faces north, the "yes" part is that the box is not completely open to the north, there is a wall between where the birds are brooding their chicks and the north wind - much more so than on the nestledge and even more than the Radisson nestbox in a way.
Hope that helps ...
-
Wishing them good luck. Hope the storm does not affect them overly much and the worst that happens is the adults get a little bit wet with no egg/chick problems.
-
Thanks it does help. I hope you are right dupre501.
-
congratulation here. :-*
-
Still two chicks here and I believe 2 intact eggs though there is a bit of debris next to the inside wall that I thought at one point (and could be) part of an eggshell ... or the remains of breakfast even though these two seem pretty neat ...
-
They did have a bit of excitement this morning though - both adults lit out after something or someone off the building (so no, not anyone on the roof). Chicks were a bit surprised but they are in that oops rolled over phase and Beatrix was back about 90 seconds later and they were tucked back under her.
-
Some excitement in West Winnipeg at about 6 p.m. Ty and Beatrix were a bit upset.
1) Beatrix on alert, with Ty circling above
2) Beatrix in flight - notice the darker underside and missing feather on the right wing
3) & 4) Ty in flight - notice the much lighter underside

Nice aerial shots dupre!! :)
-
Chicks have just finished a lovely big meal (for small chicks) and are now completely asleep sprawled out under Mom in the nestbox.
Beatrix and Ty are doing a great job ...
-
Looks like Ty may have inherited the hunting gene from his father (Trey) and just like his brother Ivy. Food has been arriving all day at almost exactly 2 hour intervals. Chicks have been eating it all too, so it seems he's got the timing worked out perfectly ...
-
Beatrix has both the kids stuffed under her but she doesn't look wet - damp maybe, but not wet in the box. Wind seems to be driving from the west or southwest as I watch them which means the box is providing max protection. As I look I can see that there is quite a bit of dry gravel around her and the kids (whose fuzzy white butts are sticking out from under mom) and she isn't looking at all concerned. She's been stuffing the kids and eggs (yes they are still there) pretty far under her when the weather has been colder and wetter so I don't think this is giving her much concern at all. If the wind should swing around, I suspect she'll stuff them out of sight pretty quick.
-
Looks like Ty may have inherited the hunting gene from his father (Trey) and just like his brother Ivy. Food has been arriving all day at almost exactly 2 hour intervals. Chicks have been eating it all too, so it seems he's got the timing worked out perfectly ...
That a boy Ty! (some strong genes came off that nestledge) :D
-
Second chick here hatched on June 1st so today may be the last day of brooding other than for cold/wet/sunny weather - they sure are growing fast!
-
First chick (female I think by the size of those paws!!) is ready for some alone time while second chick is not. Beatrix was playing duvet and chick 1 crawled out and found a spot for him/herself to sprawl out in the corner in the shade but away from Mom and chick 2. Beatrix kept checking on chick 1 but looks like chick 1 is bang on time in terms of development and can thermoregulate on his/her own now.

Thanks RCF ;D - real life had a meltdown before I could repost on the Forum.
Have a couple more coming when I get back to my computer.

TPC (and RCF for her help), thanks for posting the shot of the chicks. Nice to see how they are developing.
I took a drive into the area this evening about 6:30 and found both Beatrix and Ty away from the chicks, so I was fairly certain they were thermoregulating on their own. First I found Ty on the NE corner of the building with his back to me. Once he turned around he was relatively easy to identify with his white chest. Shortly afterward he was joined by Beatrix, not sure where she came from. Then Ty took off, closely followed by Beatrix (see first photo). They simply moved to the NW corner of the building (see second photo). Then Beatrix took off and Ty watched her leave (see third photo). Beatrix headed west and Ty moved out of sight on the roof.

Beatrix is in the box giving them a bit of extra shelter from the cool and rain. They are sprawled out on the gravel beneath her and she is napping as she stands over them with her back to the wind (not much wind right now). Always nice to get a cuddle from Mom. :)

Really appreciate the pictures of the chicks. Must enjoy these while we can. :D

Yesterday afternoon, we were checking out the WW location and found Beatrix on the east sign. She seemed to be sitting a little differently than usual. I was thinking that if she were my cat, I would have said she looked sulky or guilty, then we found a whole dead gull in the middle of the parking lot. Looks like someone dropped dinner.
-
Really? She would just leave it in the parking lot?
Would a peregrine be unable to lift off, supposing it could get its talons into the dropped dinner?
-

I think perhaps the full was the one Beatrix nearly brained Ty with - it was blowing around a lot on the roof and then when I checked later couldn't see it anywhere on the roof by the nest. Or perhaps she decided to take it off to their larder and dropped it where Dupre found it.
-
Thanks TPC, so do I understand that a peregrine doesn't ever do recovery from the ground, should a dead prey end up there?

Oh sorry no they will go to the ground for prey if the drop it or lose it some other way ( ie another raptor attempts to steal it) but I not sure our urban birds would due to the potential for danger in such a crowded environment - in a more open or less busy area absolutely. T-Rex took his meal to the middle of a lawn on the campus of the U of M - he ate lunch while students were eating theirs at a safe distance from him. Where there are more buildings and traffic - foot and vehicle - they mostly just right it off
-
Got it! Thanks, TPC.

chicks hanging out this afternoon in the nestbox
(https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CITFr3UUMAENWEF.jpg)
-
We thought that there must be one male and one female in this nest but it turned out to be two females and the "little" female is quickly catching up in size to her older sister.
This image is a bit deceiving because one chick is standing, the other plopped down on her butt. All nice looking birds and very feisty which is great to see. Banding took 15 minutes including retrieval and return but before we put them back we did take an extra minute to do a bit of housekeeping, their nestbox was a bit of a mess - couple of large gull wings were taking up valuable real estate.
Watching later on, we noticed that Ty has started to feed the girls from the ledge - they are big enough that they overwhelm him when he brings food into the box, by staying on the ledge, he maintains some control over the feeding and maintains some of his dignity - earlier they almost tackled him like football players!
-
so cute. 2 females. :-*
-
They are little beauties. Thanks again for these updates, TPC. To be able to do everything in 15 minutes is amazing. Perhaps they thought the gull wings added to the ambience. They, in their own way may thank you for cleaning their nest. They will need more room as they continue to grow.
-
Beautiful girls! Amazing to think that these chunky, fluffy little budda-birds will very soon be magnificent, sleek, speedy, soaring birds of prey :o
-
Glad to hear the banding of "the girls" went well. :D
-
Beatrix and Ty were sure upset yesterday evening. We went out at just after 6 p.m. and both birds were in flight and hollering at something. By the time we left, about 40 minutes later, they were still at it. One of them did take several short breaks and settled on one or other of the north side corners, but it wouldn't be for long and they were back at it. There must have been maintenance being done on the roof, as at one point I did see a fellow in coveralls climb the ladder and take a peek at the top part of the building. Brave fellows.

At last report he was settling in well. They had even started to introduced him to a lady friend and at that time it was looking promising. His world may beat whole lot smaller as a result of his injuries but it may not be a lonely one. Will see if I can get an update on him in the next little bit.

thank you.

The girls have figured out how to get up on the box ledge but not out of the box yet. But it won't take them long.
Because this site is our windiest, the box is as sheltered as we could make it. The box ledge is about the height of the box edge at the Radisson but it is still below the roof ledge at the West Winnipeg site. This means that the chicks can't get up there until they are old enough to be able to climb out and therefore old enough to sit in safety even if it is windy - and they can see out, which is usually what draws chicks up onto the edges of their buildings. This way, the chicks can see the world when they are ready but they are still protected from getting blown off until they are ready to go. From the box ledge (might have to find another name I guess) - the chicks can access the ramp we added on to get down onto the roof - we took the idea from the McKenzie Seeds roof box - lets the chicks climb in and out a bit earlier than if they didn't have the ramp. Chicks like to return to the nestbox at night and this way they can start exercising their muscles running and flapping about on the rooftop at an earlier age and where they have more room and more protection from the wind before they actually fledge. Having siblings makes it even better since they tend to chase each other around the rooftop just like they do after they fledge. More training for the real thing.
-
Glad to hear that the chicks are relatively safe from being blown off the roof, prior to fledging. :)
-
Dennis just contacted me to let me know the older of the two chicks just figured out what the ramp is for - both up and down!
They grow up so fast :'( ;D
-
Well that explains Beatrix's shift in perch to the camera box. She did the same last year when the chicks started moving to the nest box edge and doing a lot of flapping.
Yesterday, about 5:45 pm, Beatrix was on her new perch when she took off like a shot with a lot of yelling. She meets up with Ty and does a food exchange with him, then rushes back to deliver the food to her chicks. Ty circled once and landed on the other corner. She didn't stay with the chicks very long and was back on her perch.
-
Checked out the area this evening before the rain storm. Did not see Beatrix or Ty. But it looks like the nest box ledge is not enough for the chicks. They were out looking at the world today. In the first picture they look a little higher than the other two pictures.
Sorry for the terrible pictures but the air quality in Winnipeg is horrible and the distance is great.

Yikes! Hope the chicks didn't get too enthusiastic about peering over the edge of the building in the storm we had this evening! :o
-
West Winnipeg chicks were fine this morning - running up and down the ramp and playing on the roof. No problems at all from the storm. Beatrix was hanging out with them so they weren't itching to be anywhere but where they were. The younger of the two chicks decided at one point that enough was enough and she just plopped herself down on the roof rocks to nap.
-
glad they are O.K.
-
Oh oh, :o older chick has figured out how to get up on the nestbox roof. Going to have to check the recorder to see what she did ....
-
Checked out the site this evening and found Beatrix and Ty stationed kitty corner to each other. Beatrix was watching the north and east sides of the rooftop and Ty had the west and south. That is strategy. Watched them do this at this site in previous years as well.
-
Apparently after only one season together as a couple, Beatrix and Ty are a good match. :)
-
Took me a few minutes to find them, but the girls are parked under the nestbox napping on cool rocks in the shade. Finally found them when the breeze started blowing their feathers around!!
-
The older of the two chicks practically knocked Ty off the nestbox when she bolted up the ramp to relieve him of the food he'd brought. The younger chick didn't show any interest in the food and remained on the roof sitting in the sun and out of the wind.
Here's a video clip of the almost hit-n-run ... https://youtu.be/tYZnx8rsWBc :D
-
We went for an evening drive and found Ty sitting on the NE corner. He moved to the NW corner and just sat there with the sun on his back. So we went for more of a drive. When we came back about an hour later, Ty was in the same place as when we left. But then there was some movement and Ty flew away. One of the chicks looked over the edge and started yelling. A moment later in flew Ty with a meal. He sort of paused above the corner, then flew away. "Come follow me". He turned around and came back to land on the corner and then give the food to the chicks.

She was a little farther back on the wall, with her back to us, when I got there. After a while she got up moved one step then sat again with her back to us. This time with her tail hanging over the wall. I haven't seen any flying here yet.
-
I love your photos and always look forward to more. Thank you!
-
Crazy weekend for me folks but will try to Get a good long look at the cam and the recordings and provide everyone wigs full update. The roof here unlike at McKenzie Seeds has a lot of places we can't see with our cameras so at this time of the year I have so watch where/when they "disappear" and reappear to know what they are up to. The oldest chick here hatched on May 30th so she is 41 days old her younger sister is 39 days old. It used to be that 45 days was a good estimate for female chicks to fledge but our kids are smaller so could go earlier but there are just the two of them and they are both girls so could wait longer than a mixed gender nest. Hopefully I will have more news soon!!
-
Went to check this site as the first few drops of rain fell. As we approached we saw a bird fligh to the nest corner. It was just the faintest glimpse of a bird. By the time we got around the building there was a chick crouched on the corner. Was this the bird that just flew in? I don't know. Then it started raining harder and the chick retreated off the wall. Once the rain tapered off, there were two soggy birds that we could see looking over the wall at the world.
-
thank you for checking
-
Both chicks were at the nestbox this morning, then they went wall-walking and lost track of one (remember we can't see 1/2 of the roof with our cameras) and the other has found herself a nice shady spot across the roof from the nestbox - it has been a very popular spot on the roof with previous years' chicks.
-
Went for a drive this evening and spotted all members of this family. Beatrix was on the east sign. Try was on the south sign with one of the girls above him on the wall. The other girl was about half way along on the west wall. Ty flew away for just a moment and returned to the south wall but landed one floor below the sign. What an odd place to land. Didn't stay long. Then he flew off followed by Beatrix, leaving the kids on their own just chillin' on the walls.
-
Thanks for all your updates, dupre & TPC. Won't be long now, till we will see some fledglings overhead. :)
-
I drove past as well not long after Dupre and the girls sure get around - nice to have a light wind day so the girls can run the walls - helps them get stronger and helps them to get comfortable with the winds so they will fledge safer.
When I came past the girls we on the north wall, Beatrix was on the northeast corner and Ty was in the southwest corner and everyone seemed very comfortable. And you can sure tell the girls from their parents - obviously they are bigger than Ty but they look much sturdier (or bulkier if you like) than Beatrix. They looked wonderful sitting there ...
-
Looks like one of the girls fledged today.

Looks like one of the girls fledged today.
Won't be long until they all (this year's chicks) fledge. :'(
Tracey, have you decided on a naming contest?
-
Well we know where both the chicks were first thing this morning and they were fine and about 10 feet away from each all night. I am just looking at the older chick who has figured out how to fly off and back again in calm air so so far so good. The younger chick is fine as well, she just bombed past the camera way above roof height so she has figured out how to gain altitude though she hasn't yet perfected her precision landing skills. Give her a couple of days though and she'll be a pro.
Basically, all is good at West Winnipeg right now ...
-
Tracey, have you decided on a naming contest?
We had thought we do so with the Brandon chicks as there are four - but have a couple of details to check out first ... more news as soon as I have something!
-
Both of the West Winnipeg girls are fine - the both toddled into view when a meal was dropped off. So both have been off and back on safely a couple of times in the last 24 hours.

This is great news. TPC. Thanks for the update and photo.
-
Thanks for the update TPC!
-
Both of the chicks were at the nestbox first thing this morning when it was misty/foggy. Then they took off it seems for the south end of the building where we can't see them. They both appeared again before noon, but nothing again until it got too dark to see with the cameras. Will check again tomorrow morning to see if they come by for their morning snack. They looked pretty slick on their landings and take-offs, strong and sure of what they were doing.
-
...They looked pretty slick on their landings and take-offs, strong and sure of what they were doing.
This is very good to hear! :D
-
Girls are doing well - they were both back at the nestbox this morning a couple of times - one time to fight over food - well fight and then share since there seemed to be plenty for both.
-
Today, at the right place at the right time....
As there is no blue tape on the right leg, I am assuming this is the younger of the girls.
If TPC could confirm, the fourth photo show a 52 on the band.

Update
Unfortunately, Tiggy was rescued today and is in care. She's dehydrated but they don't believe she has any fractures or dislocations. She's being treated and hopefully it is just a bit of a digestive upset and she'll respond quickly and well.
Will let you all know when I have more information.
-
Thank you for the update TPC. I'm very sorry to hear about Tiggy and hope she recovers quickly while in care.
I would also like to know how her rescue came about.
-
Thanks for your post about Tiggy. Thankfully she is getting the care she needs. I too am interested in knowing what happened. Our winds over the past week have been strong and consistent.???
-
Got the message last night so don't have any details yet - just that she was picked up dehydrated and weak and that it didn't look like she had any fractures or dislocations. She's been flying for a couple of weeks so she has a firm grasp of the basics and from what I have seen she's good at what she does. No mention of potential collisions either. Of more concern is why she is dehydrated - she was found within the WW territory - not far from the nestsite in fact and her parents are still around, are experienced and she isn't old enough that they would be expecting her to feed herself - so why the dehydration ... they have a suspicion, but she will need to be seen by a vet to confirm.
Saw a photo of her and she looks fine - annoyed and alert and on her feet which is a good sign.
More news as I get it - photos too so long as I get the photographer's permission.
-
Sorry to hear about Tiggy. Hope she makes a quick recovery.
Yesterday, we went for an early afternoon drive and spotted one of the chicks on the Diner, about 2 p.m.

Thanks for this Dupre - will let the vet know - no way to know if it was Tiggy or Tuppence but it does say they are still hanging around the nestsite and their parents.
-
Thank you for the further update TPC.
I'm assuming Tiggy was noticed on or near the ground by someone in the area (at least until and if I hear otherwise), and would like to send thanks to whoever reported her condition or managed to pick her up. Hopefully he, she or they might read this forum.
I'm very concerned about her dehydration and weakness, and will continue to hope for a good outcome.
-
I hope Tiggy makes a successful & speedy recovery.
-
Thanks TPC! Thanks dupre!
-
Thank you for keeping track of these falcons with your beautiful photos Dupre!
I very much appreciate all of your updates. :)
-
Had a report on Tiggy and it sounds like she is responding to treatment for a sour crop.
Don't know specifically how they have been treating Tiggy but this I think is the usual process. Sour crop in raptors is considered an emergency medical condition. Sour crop occurs when food is retained in the crop and starts to decompose which causes bacteria to rapidly proliferate which if not treated promptly can lead to septicemia and death. Treatment involves removing the food (carefully), then the bacterial load needs to be decreased and then the birds needs to observed for a few days to ensure it doesn't happen again or that the sour crop was caused by some other cause.
I don't know how bad Tiggy's condition was when she was brought in or how she got sour crop, though over feeding apparently can be a cause which makes me wonder if she told a little trip and then came back and ate too much too fast and it was more than she could handle. And those worried about her being dehydrated, remember the peregrines get most/all of the "water" from the food they eat and if she has problem with eating that could be the reason. But that is just guess - until her carers have more time to chat with me I won't know all the details. And we may never know all the answers but so long as she recovers that is fine.
-
Wow! Very interesting read, TPC. I've never heard of "sour crop" before. Sure do hope Tiggy recovers from the bacterial infection resulting from the condition.
-
Poor Tiggy. :(
Thank you for posting as much as you know regarding her condition, TPC. I'll continue to hope her treatment will have a good outcome, of course.
-
Wildlife Haven posted a note on their Facebook page if you want to check it out (www.wildlifehaven.ca) - this was the photo they posted of Tiggy today

She is responding well to treatment and they are about to start her on solid foods again and hopefully we will be able to return her to her parents very soon.
-
She is a real beauty. Thanks for sharing, TPC! Let's hope for a complete recovery.
-
Thanks for posting the photo and the link!
Both Ty and Beatrix were at the Diner around noon today.

You're welcome!
I also appreciate everyone's feedback over the season, even though I don't respond back each time.

This evening Ty was really restless. He started on the east sign, then went to the NW corner, then he was off. It looked like he was chasing off a several other falcons. He drove them away really quickly, but it looked like a total of 4 falcons (including Ty). Then he was back to the NW corner, then the west wall, then finally the south sign. He then decided to check out his stash of food and have dinner. About 7 pm, Beatrix showed up and took up her spot on the east sign.
I wonder if one of the four falcons was Beatrix and she pursued them further away, while Ty returned to the building.

Tiggy is back flying the skies of Winnipeg. She was raring to go when we picked her up, was mostly calm while we made the trip into town from Wildlife Haven. Then we opened the door on her carrier and waited a heartbeat and she hopped out, paused and took to the air. She proceeded to circle lazily and unhurriedly as she got her bearings and then she widened her circles and gained some altitude we watched her slowly soaring for the first time in a month. She seemed pleased ... nothing hurried, no hitches in her flight, it was strong and effortless. And she just soared out of sight in about 5 minutes.

All in all, a perfect goodbye :D
Many thanks to the Dan and Tiffany and everyone else out at Wildlife Haven for taking such good care of her!!

All in all, a perfect goodbye :D
Love your beautiful photo of Tiggy, Dennis; although, I hope this won’t be your last photo of her.
Perhaps someone such as you or Dupre will spot her, or maybe she will visit the nest box and show up on camera; I'm very happy for her, but don’t want this to be her last goodbye.
-
So far Tiggy has not shown up on camera at the nestsite - Ty and Beatrix have - but not Tiggy since her release and not Tuppence for a couple of weeks.
Still keeping an eye on the cams though and they do appear, will let folks know.
You can see that her blue electrical tape is still in place ... so if anyone does see a chick with a black band on its left leg and blue tape on the band on its right - sing out - we only have one chick in the province with blue tape and that is Tiggy.
-
Thank you TPC. Hopefully someone will spot Tiggy since she is the only chick in the province with blue tape!
-
What wonderful news of Tiggy's release & flight! And what a great photo, Dennis! :D

wonderful news and photos
a concern for me is, did a falconer work with her to hone her hunting skills. She will have none. And it is getting late in season, and it is doubtful if parents will take her back after such a long time.
I am not meaning to be negative. I am not . Just wondering. She was not out long before she went to rehab
Good luck Tiggy.

No a falconer did not work on her hunting skills but she has been hunting on her own. Peregrine chicks are hardwired to hunt without training from adults or falconers - that was one of the things that made hacking a viable recovery tool. So long as the chicks have access to food they do what chicks do - start chasing things, then catching things and then hunting things. And as they get better at hunting, they stop coming back for food even though it is free (aka no labour required) food.
In Tiggy's case, she likely was starting to hunt on her own when she was found - hacked birds start to disperse from the hacksite at about 30-33 days. Tiggy wouldn't have been dispersing, her parents could have been willing to keep feeding her for another 2-4 weeks but likely she was starting to hunt which could have contributed to the impaction she experienced. Could have been something she ate or caught something and ate too much. Impactions are uncommon so the chance of it being caused by the actions of an experienced parent seems unlikely - an young bird with her first kill, perhaps more likely.
As for Tiggy's recovery, the folks at Wildlife Haven helped her cast up the material causing the impaction, made sure there was no infection as a result of the impaction (there wasn't) and got her rehydrated (she was dehydrated when she arrived). Then they fed her and monitored her closely to make sure it didn't happen again. As she was recovering, they moved her to a flight cage so she could build up her strength, then to a bigger, flight cage to get her flying then they got her hunting live quail so they could be sure she would be able to feed herself. Or as sure as anyone can be - remember, chicks often disappear right after fledging and mostly folks assume they have come to some unknown tragic end only to find them on nestsites a couple of years later - Hurricane and Alley come easily to mind. When Tiggy was released, she had fully recovered from the impaction, she flying appropriately for her age (kinds of flight are age related) and she had been hunting her own food. And all with a minimum of human interaction which showed when we went to retrieve her - I think the only time she was happy to see humans was when she stepped out of the crate and that only lasted for 10, maybe 15, seconds and then she was having nothing to do with us. And she was no fonder of the folks at Wildlife Haven, which is sort of the point, ungrateful and unwilling to tolerate humans is exactly what we like to see in a peregrine - Jules and Joli come to mind now ;D
Tiggy was 64-65 days old when she was picked up, 93-94 days old when she was re-released. She is healthy, flew very strongly and confidently and had been hunting on her own in care. All in all, better prepared than lots of our fledglings so we are optimistic that she will do no worse than her sibling Tuppence or her cousins Django, Armstrong, Ellington, Ella or Nina.
We hedged our bets a bit and released her at the edge of the West Winnipeg territory so she could go where she wished - back to the nestsite if her parents will allow (sometimes they get a wee bit territorial, even with their chicks, just before migration) or off along the rivers or wetlands or farm fields where waterfowl are starting to stage. We've been watching the cameras at the West Winnipeg nestsite and there has been no change in Ty's and Beatrix's behaviour - no being overly protective of the nestsite, no increase in visits and so far, only pair-bonding behaviour with each other (lots of bowing and talking). And at noon today, I'm 99% sure Tiggy turned up in the nestbox with food and Ty who arrived just a minute before didn't try to chase her off. Only got a glimpse of a corner of her right leg on the camera in the box but it was dark and she is the only surviving chick with a dark tape on her right leg. So all looks to going well - can't say that Ty or Beatrix will feed her, but they aren't chasing her away either - she stayed at the nestbox on the roof and on the wall edge for 55 minutes and no one turned up to harass her or drive her off.
Hopefully we'll catch sight of her a couple more times on-camera before the end of the season but if not, then we will have to wait and see if she turns up on a territory like her many aunts and uncles and cousins before her ...

Great work, great result! :D

thanks for the lengthy reply.
Was not my intention to question rahab, just was wondering how Tiggy was prepared before release . And I see they did prepare her for hunting. that is all I was concerned about.
I am sure she will do well .

Thanks for all the information. It is very interesting to hear how they help injured birds. It's great to hear of Tiggy's progress, may she live a long and good life!

Your question was the perfect opportunity to provide more information on Tiggy's recovery Bev - thanks for asking it!! :D

Thank you so much for your post, TPC. I found it very informative. I have saved it to file to answer any questions I may have in the coming seasons. Again, thank you! :-*

Returned from vacation yesterday about 6 pm. Stopped by the Diner on the way home and spotted one chick on the east sign. She was looking very relaxed and in no hurry to go anywhere.

could almost red band , but fuzzy when I blew it up
Great photo

I know Bev, I couldn't quite make it out either. One of the pictures seemed to show the "M", but since the girls are M52 and M53, it wasn't much help.
Checked out the site today at about 2-2:30 pm. I spotted Beatrix on the south sign of the Diner, with one falcon flying very high over the site in slow, lazy circles, drifting to the southwest. I circled about the arean and came back to the Diner when I saw a falcon fly to the NW corner. Turned out to be Beatrix again. She didn't stay long and flew off to the northwest.
-
they are so quick. Glad you are still seeing them. We are still seeing our adults and juveniles
-
Tuppence was in the nestbox this morning - looking a bit damp - went off wandering onto the roof - looking for snacks perhaps, Tiggy and Tuppence used to eat on the roof after they were old enough to leave the nestbox

she is quite light in color. We are in the middle of cold and rain.
Glad she is doing well. :-*

Nice photo of Tuppence! :D
Yesterday, when checking out the area, we only found Beatrix at the Tower.
Today at about 4 pm, both Beatrix and Ty were on the east side of the Diner. A while later when we came back to the area at about 5:30 pm, Ty was on the Tower and Beatrix was still on the east side of the Diner.

Bit of a melee at the nestbox just after 4pm today. There was a female, who I assume was Beatrix but can't be sure, was under aerial assault that was so fast I had to slow the recording down to see it buzz by. She didn't give an inch though - and she was serious, every time the bird buzzed by she jumped up trying to catch the attacker with her feet! Very serious business this late in the season which is what makes me wonder if it was Beatrix or an interloper ... pretty sure I saw a black band but was happening so fast and not within range of the cameras.
-
Wow, action continues till the end. Thanks for catching that.

Just wish I could have seen who it was defending. No way to tell who was attacking, much too fast. Unfortunately, the defender kept her/his feet out of camera range. If it is someone new, maybe they will come back (sans the fighting) and I'll get another chance to get an ID.
-
Melee bird hasn't been back but went through the recordings frame by frame and definitely NOT Beatrix - think it might be Spencer or Kelly based on what I can see of the leg bands (on the opposite legs from Beatrix and Ty) and that it was a female - and those are the only two around town. Unless it is a complete outlier, someone we haven't seen all year ... possible. Will let you know if I manage to get more info.

Hoe all goes well, so late in season. I always thought that towards end of season we would not have territorial battles. But Gord was telling us that their hormones revert to defense of territory as well as bonding.
I know when falcons , do not migrate, this is to be expected, but I thought it would be different with migrating birds.
So fingers crossed

Melee was more show than conflict at the nestbox at least - only saw the attacker a couple of brief seconds as it bombed past otherwise it was 5-6 feet above the female. Now that I know the female on the box wasn't Beatrix, I'm pretty sure she was the attacker. Haven't seen other bird since and yesterday Beatrix and Ty were doing their usual thing in the nestbox as though the melee didn't happen.

On Wednesday evening, Beatrix was on the south sign of the Diner.
On Thursday, we found her there again, with Try hanging out on the NW corner.
-
:-* they will be leaving in a few weeks I imagine.

Spotted Beatrix on the east side of the Diner this evening. She was having a nap.
