I never did hear whether the chick fledged successfully. One of the parents visits from time to time, and today I caught both in the nest box.

The chick is gone again, but I think that this time he may have fledged (I think this may be a male since he seems fairly small). One of the parents visited the nest today, but no sign of the chick.

The Peregrine Chick:
Don't know the site well enough to be able to tell if the chick could have wandered outside the box - if it did, the parent(s) would have hung out with it until it returned the box (with or without parental coercion) or was returned with human help.  Or the chick could have been removed by said same humans to make sure it hadn't suffered any ill effects if they were concerned about it being left "alone".  I use quotation marks around "alone" because again, without knowing the layout of the site better, I can't say that chick was actually alone.  Depending on the weather, there may not have been any need for the adults to keep it warm and they may have just been sitting a cm out of camera range which wouldn't qualify as "alone", just not "sitting on top of".  The Maine adults and Sumo are not the norm, our birds don't tend to sit on or beside the chicks by banding age when they are in the nestbox, the chicks are mostly with each other not Mom/Dad.

2009 NESTING SEASON

Another nest with a lone chick is one on the Mid-Hudson Bridge in Poughkeepsie, New York. In contrast with the Maine nest, this chick has been left alone much of the time.

Last Wednesday the chick was not in the nest for some hours. Eventually a parent returned to the nest, and started incubating a discarded egg (there were four eggs, but only one hatched). This seemed like strange behaviour, since the eggs which did not hatch had been pushed aside some time before. I was concerned about the chick, but eventually the little one returned to the nest box. The chick hatched on April 30.

TPC, does this behaviour seem unusual to you?
