I haven't seen the chicks at this nest recently, since the cam has been down for some time. They have changed so much:

Banders were Bob Anderson, Chuck, Jim Larson, and Amy Ries. Children from a local grade school named the falcons. I like both names, although 'Winger' is my favorite.

Husker was her usual ferocious self. She nailed Chuck in the head while he was counting barges. Ouch! He is okay, and has an interesting story to tell about the encounter.

The top of a working grain elevator is an interesting place to be. The noise is incredible - all the grain from farmfields for miles around is concentrated here, where it is loaded on to barges and sent down the Mississippi.

Still two chicks for Husker and her mate. This afternoon, the chicks were hungry, and Husker had no food for them. A little later, the male arrived with food.

WOO HOO!!!!! and so cute!  I love how the adults look proudly at their newly born chicks!  They also do the same when eggs are laid.  It's wonderful! 

Mate needs a name!!

Winnie and Zeus's daughter Husker and her mate have their first chick, hatched this evening.

When I checked a little earlier, the eggs were still intact:

A look at Husker's four eggs this evening. The estimated hatch date is May 11. Husker has been confirmed as the resident female this year; as far as I know, the male is unidentified.

2009 NESTING SEASON

Did you know that before Hera, Zeus was paired with Winnie, and yes, Winnie as in Winnipeg.  She was another kid of T-Rex (Trey's Dad - they are half-sibs) from the University of Manitoba Campus.  Doorly in Topeka is one of their kids.  Hope his mate is one of Amelia's kids and Amelia is a full sib of Madame, Trey's Mom.

I did know that Winnie was Zeus's first mate from 1996 to 1999. I am sure you already know that one of their daughters, Husker, born in 1998, is the resident female at Red Wing, Minnesota. She has been there since 2001. Her band is red/black, *M/D (she was banded as a male, and the band was put on upside down). Last year she and her mate (unidentified) had four eggs; only one hatched, a female named Dakota, who fledged successfully.

Husker's mate from 2001 until at least 2006 was Prescott, *3/*2, a 1998 son of the legendary Mae of the King Plant in Bayport, Minnesota.

Husker has three eggs at Red Wing so far this year. The male there appears to be unbanded.
