Ever since I started here on the forum, I have been also watching Beleefe De Lente.  The Stone owls are priceless. Eagle owls come next on my list.  Haven't watched the other cams much but do check into them on occasion.  The Stone Owls I believe are what we call Screech Owls!  This is a great site and the owls are soooo cute!!!

Finally this site is all wrapped up. The 2 "baby" storks have fledged beautifully and uneventfully. Their webcam is still active but I expect only for a short time. Great season in Noord Brabantall and all. I'm praying that another year for Pa and S2 is coming. Theirs is one of my favorite Peregrine sites.

Hi everyone!  This website has some great webcams!  I went to check things out, and while the Eurasian Eagle Owls have grown, they have put together a really nice 5 minute clip.  Amazing little raptors! :)

Checked this site again today (while I was in the midst of keeping track of Brandon) and I missed the last baby owl fledging...
Aw, sorry to hear that you missed the last baby owl fledging, Ellie. :( I know that it can be disappointing to miss seeing something about the birds that you have been waiting to see. I missed seeing the Calgary chicks being banded by about 10 mins. last week. :'( But you're right, at least, there's usually a video to watch later. :)

Checked this site again today (while I was in the midst of keeping track of Brandon) and I missed the last baby owl fledging.  So glad they have videos of all the goings on.  He/she was so cute just before he flew off. Good luck to these two.

Stenuil chicks are at the fledging stage.  One has left already and one is not quite ready.  Maybe it was hatched a few days later.  They are such cute babies and so fun to watch with their head on a swivel. Right now the last one looks like he has a white moustache. The videos are great to watch if you haven't been able to follow them on a regular basis.  These chicks are still contending with the Doves that feel they should be able to build a nest in the owls porch.  The first to fledge actually had to defend himself against the Dove and I believe he actually left before he was quite ready to do so.  Hopefully he has survived and doing well.

An update:
The 2 Stone Owl chicks have really grown and are now close in size to the adult. They easily swallow a mouse or rat whole. They are just starting to grow their flight feathers and are just too cute. They have started to try to jump up to the entrance hole which leads to the corridor and to the outside. Once up there, they usually fledge pretty quickly.

The 2 remaining stork chicks are almost adult size and have their beautiful plumage. They stand up most of the time now and have begun wingercizing. If I recall from last year, they are not in a big hurry to fledge...maybe because they are so big??

There were 6 barnswallow eggs in the monitored nest. The female barnswallow seemed exhausted (according to the blog) and eventually several of the chicks died. They think there are 3 chicks left and they are now being well fed. They did a count of the barnswallows in the barn and found that most were males who sit in their nests in a sullen mood! There is a shortage of both food and females at this site.

All 7 Nuthatches "fledged" on June 4 and 5th. The blogger reports that they are in the garden close to the nest box and are being fed by the parents. It seems they fall rather than fledge from the nest and are supported on the ground by the parents.

The stoneowls have 2 hatches. 1 egg was carried out into the corridor leading into the nest (visable from that cam) and the other was pushed out and abandoned in the nestbox. With the concerns about drought and food supply, this may be a good thing...lots of food for the 2 chicks who appear to be thriving.

The storks are growing like weeds and have started to grow their black wing feathers. They can all stand up now and have started to "wingersize"

The barn swallows have 6 eggs and contue to incubate.

The nuthatch chicks (7 of them at last count) are growing and have sprouted fuzz so they look like tiny sasquatches. I'm sure they will be much cuter in a week or two. They are quite visable when the parents come in with food.

The kingfishers have been copulating in front of the camera. I have never watched them in previous years so I am not sure if it is normal for them to be starting a nest now or if they are just having fun!

Ellie, I agree with you. The stone owl chicks and adults are very pretty.  Poor barn owls, they are so ugly they are attractive in a weird way.

I've not yet managed to see the chicks, they are all snuggled under mom. I should have known something was happening when I saw the appearance of food in the nest.

The Barn Owls are quite ugly all the time(so I think).  Hadn't noticed the Stone Owl chicks being that way............but maybe I didn't watch them as closely when they started growing up.  Guess all animals have the "gangly" years!

Steenuil: The stone owl eggs should hatch at any time. They were due today. She is glued to them so I haven't been able to see yet. There are now only 3 eggs. There was suspicion that one of the eggs was infertile as it seemed to be dry inside and therefore would fly all over the place whenever she got up. It was eventually pulled out by her as she hopped out of the nest. Stay posted!

Oehoe: The eagle owl chicks wandered out of camera view last week or so. There is a delightful view of the ledge and it is cool to tune in when it is night there-you can hear the owls, frogs, and who knows what else.

Ooievaar: The 3 remaining stork chicks are growing like weeds. They are trying to stand up in the nest but are still really quite clumsy. Both parents are working hard to feed these kids. They are like bottomless pits!

Boerenzwaluw: The camera was moved to a different nest because the male in nest 55 did not successfully find a mate. The camera is focused on nest 24 now and 6 eggs were laid this week. The incubation is 14 days and hatch is due about May 30. This site reports some rain this week and this is good news as it has been very dry in Netherlands and there has been worry that there will be inadequate bugs to feed the young.

Boomklever: The nuthatches have hatched and there are 7 chicks so far. It is very hard to count them as they are buried in nesting material, mostly leaves. When a parent comes with food, the tiny beaks rise like little tulips and are quickly stuffed with food. Once full, they cannot rise up as far and so the hungry ones rise up above those who have already eaten. I always wondered how that worked, the web bloggers explained it. They are just too cute!

Enjoy!

This nest box always gets messy looking, especially if there is a large clutch. They remove a lot of the pellets when they place rings on the owlets. The blog has a running total of the types of foods that have been brought to the mother owl. The pellets are also studied. I guess the messy nestbox is a good thing, there is plenty of food. Most of the blogs on this site are talking about the drought in this area. There is worry that the usual bugs, worms, and grubs that are a staple of the young owls will not be plentiful. There have been a lot of June bugs, but their hatch is early. I hope that they are able to sustain the food supply here. Weird weather all over the world I guess.

The stone owls have four eggs now. Over the past three days, the nest box has gotten dirtier and more cluttered.

Last year, after all their chicks hatched, they brought in and stored all sorts of tasty owl treats. Yuuuckkk! but the chicks were happy and well fed.

An update on these many cams:
Steenuil: The stone owls seem to have won the battle against the doves who still come around and sit outside the nest box. The are promptly chased away by the male. He is a good provider and brings mainly June bugs, worms, grubs, frogs, mice and voles. What was at one time a clean and tidy nest box is now littered with pellets thus attesting to the plentiful supply of food. She continues to brood.
Oehoe: The Eagle owl chicks are a male 956 grams (over 100 grams larger than expected) and a female1336 grams (over 100 grams larger than expected). They were sleeping together last night face to face with their beaks touching...cute.
Ooievaar: The chicks have grown a lot. The smallest one (which hatched last) died yesterday. As in previous years, it was consumed by the mother so as to not loose the nutritional value. The blog comments noted that this is expected and not surprising considering the large number of young they have to feed.
Boerenzwaluw: The barn swallows are still "dating" so to speak". No eggs yet.
Boomklever: The nuthatch has a large clutch of eggs but the number is not known as they are buried in nesting material; in this case, leaves. She often is seen digging the eggs up and bringing them to the surface to turn and warm. She is being supplied well with food from her mate. Food supply is a concern at this site due to changes in the forested area nearby.
If you go to these sites, be sure to check out the film clips that are posted beside the webcam view. The webmasters have a good sense of humor and post some funny and interesting clips.
Enjoy!

An update:
Steenuil: The Stone Owl and the pigeons had a huge fight last night which sent the pigeon flying out the door. Many feathers were lost. It seemed that she'd had enough and set out to attack the pigeon. She seems very happy with herself now, hard incubating her 4 eggs. The film clip of 27/4 shows the violent confrontation. (Warning: it is quite violent)
Oehoe: The 2 Eagle owls are growing very fast and now resemble grey fuzzy cookie monsters strutting about the nest ledge. They were banded this morning and I am sure that their gender and weight will be posted on the site soon.
Ooievaar: The storks have had all 5 eggs hatch. They are still under the mom. When she stands, there is a gaggle of bobbing heads under her. All appears well so far.
Boerenzwaluw: The male barn swallow is easily defending his nest and has started to have an unbanded "girlfriend" visit. He allows her to enter the nest so things look good there.
Boomklever: The nuthatch has been laying eggs all week. The are buried in nesting material so it is not possible to count the number. They lay quite a number of eggs, usually 1 per day.
Slechtvalk: This pair of peregrines (Pa and S2) now have 3 of their 4 eggs hatched. They are tracked on a separate thread.

An update:
Steeniul: The mother stone owl seems to have won the fight for the nest box. Two doves tried to move in but there was a major "stare down", some screeching, a lot of wing beating and the doves are gone now. She has two eggs and is still going out hunting at night so I think she will have one or two more before hard incubation starts. The male has started to bring her food since the doves have left. (Fraidy-cat lets mom do all the fighting!)
Oehoe: The two eagle owl chicks are huge and can now hold their heads up. They are pretty funny looking. It is amazing how they blend into the surrounding landscape.
Ooievaar: The mother stork is inspecting the eggs a lot. They should hatch this week.
Boerenzwaluw: There is a noticeable shortage of barn swallows according to the blog. They are unsure if they are just late or if they met some catastrophe. The male still doesn't have a mate.
Boomklever: The nuthatches have been very busy filling the entrance hole into the nest cavity. They have also transported loads of leaves and sticks into the nest box so it looks like they are preparing for a nest.
Slechkvalken: Pa and S2 are incubating. Their progress is monitored on another thread. S2 is on the eggs now and is playing with pebbles so I guess the boredom factor is setting in.

It seems that the stone owl has persisted and the dove has been evicted from the nest box entrance. The web bloggers looked in the entrance and were surprised to find that the dove had no eggs, just a disorganized jumble of sticks for a nest. The stone owl has now laid her first egg inside the nestbox!

Steenuil: (Stoneowl)
There was fear that the owls would loose interest in nesting at this site because of the dove which has nested in the entrance way to the nest box. The owls have persisted and have been getting in past the dove who flaps aggressively at them. The female is sitting in the nest box right now and has that egg laying look on her body. Perhaps she just had to get in there to lay her eggs. This could get ugly if the owls have a hard time bringing enough food to the brooding female and to the young. They feed on insects and mice and make many many trips to and from the nest box in order to keep up the food supply.
Oehoe: (Eagleowl)
There are two young in the nest and they are more visible now that the female is away for longer periods of time and they are bigger. I saw one of them choke down a huge rat last week. They are able to eat prey that look almost the same size as them and they swallow their prey whole.
Ooievaar: (Storks)
The storks have 5 eggs and continue to brood. Last time they had this many eggs, 3 succumbed and only one chick grew to fledge. Last year there were 2 chicks and they hardly fit in the nest so this should be interesting. The nest is huge but 5 adult sized birds are I think bigger.
Boerenzaluw: (Barn swallow)
The male barn swallow has claimed his nest and is fiercely defending it from other pairs. His mate has not yet shown up but it is still early.
Boomklever: (Nuthatches)
Lots of different birds continue to check out this nest box but no one pair has staked its claim.
Ijsvogel: (Kingfishers)
Still not eggs but they visit the site a lot. There are lots of ducks and swans swimming by the site.
Slechtvalk: (Peregrine Falcon)

Oehoe (Eagle owl) has the one chick so far. The latest video clip shows her feeding the tiny chick which is noticeably larger. These chicks grow VERY quickly. At hatching, they are about 60 to 70 grams (2 ounces). In 10 days, about 200 grams, and by 3 weeks of age, almost 700 grams. The adult birds weigh about 1000-1500 grams depending on the gender. The website posts indicate that they are confident that there are more eggs. They had not expected the first egg to hatch so early.

In other news from this site, The Steenuil (Stone Owl) has not been able to access the nest box as a pigeon has taken up residency and nesting in the entrance passage. The same thing happened last year but the owl had already laid eggs and it was a constant battle to keep the young fed with the pigeon creating a hostile environment for the coming and going of the parent owls in their efforts to feed the female and later the young. The website states that there are other nestboxes on the property and that the stone owls are still around. They are unsure if they have nested elsewhere or will simply wait for the pigeon to complete her family and clear out of the nest.

The Ooievaar (storks) are brooding 4 eggs. The male stood on the closest webcam last week and it now points toward the ground. You can occasionally see a close up of his feet in this camera as he seems to like to sit here. The other cam gives an excellent view.

Ooievaar (Eagle owl) has had at least one of her eggs hatch. The most recent video shows the tiny chick moving in the nest. She was seen eating the shell of the egg. I haven't been able to determine how many eggs she has. It might not be known due to the position of the nest.

Just to catch up on this site:

Steenuil: These tiny owls have been visiting the nest but no signs of an egg yet. They had their first egg in early April last year. Again like last year there are doves attempting to build a nest in the entrance of the nestbox. This was a constant source of agitation for the mother owl last year although she was able to defend the nest successfully.

Oehoe: The eagle owl is still brooding. The male brings her huge pieces of rabbit on a regular basis. Hopefully this means that there is lots of food for when the young are hatched.

Ooievaar: The storks have 3 large eggs. Brooding starts with the 2nd egg for this species and she may still produce more eggs, although the last to hatch sometimes do not survive as they are so much less advanced than the oldest and are less able to get in line for food.

Boerenzwaluw: The barn swallows are not yet back but the camera has gone live. Below the nest, you can see sheep and new baby lambs in the barn.

Boomklever:The nuthatches have prepared their nest but so far, no eggs.

Ijsvogel: The Kingfishers are at the nest frequently but no eggs yet. Clicking the links to the right of the camera view will give you a view of these colourful birds.

Purperreiger: The camera is now live but so far, I have not seen the Purple Herons and there are no posted clips. The camera is aimed out over a field. Lots of beautiful bird calls can be heard.

That owl (Oehoe) is a fierce character, and she does not miss a thing.  A couple of frogs came by her ledge, and she certainly did not take kindly to that.  She stood up to her full height and pounced, and she is very impressive when she is being protective.

If you want a translation, just Google "Dutch English translation". The Google translation is very good because you can cut and paste a rather lengthy passage for translation. Some of the other sites I have used restricted the length of the passage making the process frustrating. This site translates other languages too but does not translate Peregrine squawks so you'll just have to continue to use your imagination for those!

Thank you for the very informative commentary on this website and these webcams, bcf. :) Very interesting to watch these storks at night, with the night vision webcam. Seems as if there's a thunder & lightning storm going on there right now. Sure is noisy and windy! How I wish I could read Dutch, so that I could read some of the research info. ;)

For those not familiar with this site, here is an update:

Steenuil (Stone owl): This webcam is up and running. There is an additional camera on the outside of the nest box this year. The pair appears to be the same as last year. Their gender is difficult to determine so the easiest way to tell who's there-the female has a leg ring and the male is unbanded. Both have been visiting the nest. All of the webcams have a list of videos on the right hand side that you can click to see the highlights. The first egg was at the beginning of April last year. The tiny chicks are truly ugly for a while and magically transform.

Oehoe (Eagle Owl): These are almost the largest owls in the world. Their call is haunting and resembles their Dutch name. This pair are believed to have 3 eggs. The female started brooding after the first egg which is said to be unusual. Only the female broods. There is not much to see except for the female who looks like a huge cat sitting on a cliff.

Oievaar (Stork): There is a night vision cam at this site. The adults stay in the nest quite a bit. They are adding to the nest and "fluffing it" These are a lot of fun to watch especially once mating begins. They have frequent er...conjugal visits including head posturing and bill clapping.

Boerenzaluw (Barn Swallow): Barn swallows are just beginning their migration from Africa. This web cam is not up quite yet.

Boomklever (Kingfisher): An nest cam has been added to this site. There have been some Kingfisher sightings and they are hoping for chicks this year.

Ijsvogel (Nuthatch): Two nuthatches are checking out the nest. It is hoped that they are able to raise young this year. There have been some recent changes to the surrounding area including removal of trees. This can affect the availability of food for the young.

Purperreiger (Purple Heron): This webcam is not yet up and running.

Slechtvalk (Peregrine Falcon): Pa and S2 are the presiding pair here. This cam is being websat by another member. This is a great nestbox, fun to watch.

For those of you who watched the Torenvalk (kestrels) and Kerkuil (barn owls) in previous years, these cams are no longer included on this site.

Most of the cameras at Beleef de Lente/Noord Brabant are up and running as of March 1, including Slechtvalk (Peregrine Falcons).  Oeho (the owl) is sitting on her nest right now, and Ooievaar (the stork) is preparing her nest.

Okay, the De Mortel pair (Pa & S2) are now on the Noord Brabant website so if you want to post about the non-peregrine webcams on this site, please post them here.

If you want to post on the De Mortel peregrines, please post them on their thread.

If posts are inadvertently posted in the wrong place, no worries, I'll move them over.

Enjoy the birdies!

Noord Brabant, Netherlands

Beleef de Lente

This site is in Dutch and has had a peregrine (slechtvalk) webcam in the past so we are hoping one will reappear here again this year.  If they don't, we will move this webcam to our "other webcams" at the end of the season.

The webcams on this site are currently watching screech owls (steenuil), Eurasian eagle owls (oehoe), barn owls (kerkuil), European kestrels (torenvalk), tomtits (koolmees), storks (ooievaar), swallows (boerenzwaluw) and white-cheeked nuthatches (boomklever).
