Aha..I may have figured it out -well kinda- thanks to wikepedia and several other sources on the web...the egg shells are made of calcium carbonate (the white) and the pigment (the red) is called protoporphyrin and apparently strengthens the eggs. They say the eggs can be white to red to brownish depending on the bird and some do have characteristic patterns.

I don't know about Peregrines, but if that was a brown chicken egg, the farmer would be checking for bronchitis ( the chicken variety). I don't know if Peregrines can get it too. Egg shell color is caused by pigment deposition during egg formation in the oviduct, so maybe its just unique to this bird if she's had funny tattoos on her eggs before.
