Just before the first hatch Sawatzke was on the eggs.  Something caught his attention and he left the eggs for maybe 15 seconds.  In that time the eggs/chicks were quite loud, as soon as he was back on them, they quieted down.

It sounds like there is more chirping than just from the little one. I wonder if another egg will hatch - early?

Hooray! ;D

I had a feeling that today was the day!

I missed the hatch, as I was running errands. Thanks for catching it, RCF!

Hatching in progress.  The chick is peeping back as it struggles out of the egg!

Lots of gentle chirping to the egg, and frequent checks underneath going on .
Then it was shift change so able to see the pipped egg was still intact.

Sawatzke took over for several hours this afternoon; and now Mary Ellen is back on the eggs. Definitely one egg with a pip. She tapped it with her beak gently before covering the eggs to start her shift.

Lots of squeaky chuckling and shuggling over the eggs this morning. Might a hatch be imminent?

Also, Sawatzke just arrived for a shift change, but Mary Ellen stayed glued on the eggs. After some discussion, he left and she stayed in position.

2014 NESTING SEASON

Apparently Mary-Ellen was spotted in the nestbox in mid-March ... last year she was observed at the box on March 19th.

Not sure how long she was there, but she's gone now.
