Yes, on the south side of the McKenzie building. I believe this would be the supporting post for the decorative ledge which was removed because it was falling apart. Wingo and Hurricane have perched here, also chicks and parents all perched on the north side post.

He didn't stay there, he flew off to the west towards the Scotia building last I saw him.  :)

Am I right, is that one of "his" perches?
Every bird has different places they like to sit ...

Wingo is still here!  I really thought he was gone and of course I did not take my camera today!  ::)  I took a photo with my phone.

Well, Wingo is still here this morning. 8)  I couldn't hazard a guess as to how long he will stay around. ???

I haven't seen Hurricane since the 3rd of October, she left the same time as last year. No chicks to be seen since Oct 1st.

Wingo from the last few days

Hurricane and a Chick from Oct 1st

That may be good news. At least they weren't trying to migrate and potentially getting caught in the snow storms that moved through the western provinces and states.

;D I'm surprised to hear they are still here at this time, RCF. Surprised, but thankful. Their presence allows you to photograph them and share with us here in the forum. Thanks for sharing.  :-*

Sept 25, 2019

Very early Monday morning I saw four falcons on the McKenzie building, one on each light.  Today Hurricane, Wingo and one chick are still here. I am a bit surprised the chick is still here though........ and Wingo for that matter. It's okay I like the view!

Thank you for the beautiful photos and updates from Brandon, RCF!

Wingo is an especially striking male, and I hope to eventually see if he retains his speckles in future years.  :)

It's been kind of wet here the last few days, so probably not great migration weather either. I am sure you got enough of your own rain in Winnipeg!  Anyway,  I saw two very wet chicks and Wingo yesterday. Hurricane and Wingo were both home today....I saw no chicks today.

Update on the Brandon chick that crash landed when it fledged ...

First is that "it" is a "he".  A "he" that has been named Paden after the gentleman who rescued him.  I rarely name birds after living people because we have had such tragic luck in the past doing that (knock on wood).  But when the chick was ready to be released, he was most certainly not any of the names I was considering and RCF reminded me of the chick's rescuer and once the chick well and truly stabbed me with a talon, I realized that he did need a more unique name and that he might be able to thwart the kinda-curse we have had going for the last 20 years (knock on wood).  So chick is now Paden.

Paden's recovery was great, all the rehab folks at Wildlife Haven were very pleased with his progress.  We did consider taking him back out to Brandon - Wingo and Hurricane have had not problems with their little brood this year but we were concerned that after a month plus away, he wouldn't get the support he'd need - not that they would necessarily neglect him but we couldn't be sure if Wingo and Hurricane were still in the feeding/training frame of mind given that the rest of their offspring appear to be pretty independent as well.  Imagine sending your kids off to college and then having a toddler running around the house.

So the folks at Wildlife Haven got him flying and made sure he was eating properly (including live prey) and we arranged for him to be hack released at a location where we could give him the option for some additional support (food) if he wanted it.  He was kept and feed at the hack location for 4 days to get oriented and then he was released.  He took off like a shot which isn't unusual and he was flying great.  Question is if he will come back over the next couple of weeks for some food or if he has decided he wants to make a clean break from us and do what young peregrines are hardwired to do at this age - fly, hunt, eat, sleep, and repeat.  We know he has the basics worked out, he's in good health and condition and we have got the best safety net we can provide for in place if he wants/needs it.

Unless he returns for a nosh, it is unlikely that we will hear anything of Paden for the next year.  And no news is good news.  Unless it is RCF reporting he's turned up at McKenzie Seeds!

I would be very surprised if he turned up here!  :o  I did see one chick and Hurricane this afternoon.   ;D

:) Your photos never cease to amaze me, RCF. I was beginning to think all had migrated and our countdown clock had begun. These photos are amazing. Thank you for sharing.Your patience has paid off and again you have captured the fledglings in a way for me/us to place ourselves in Brandon, eyes upward. Do you place your photos on Flicker or another site where I can view from time to time?  :)

No, I'm sorry I do not, GCG.  :)

Oh I do like that Wingo's and Hurricane's kids are back for a visit ... not sure if that is a prelude for leaving for good or not, but nice to see the family all back in one place.  Or most of the family at least!

After seeing only one chick for a least a week , all three were there this afternoon.  ;D  A lot of flying around by three of them this afternoon, Mom and Dad were perched. A bit of a dreary day here, not a bright day for pictures.

Wingo from the other day...looking more adult than juvenile.  :)

Wow.  I really hope he's back next year, it will be able to interesting to see if he keeps those speckles.  None of our other males have speckles that high or a breast that dark coloured. One should never wish time away faster than it is already moving, so we'll just look forward to seeing what happens next spring ...  ;D

Thanks for the pictures and updates!  Wonderful to see a successful nest for Brandon!  It’s so interesting how sometimes the chicks stick around in the area and other times they are gone as soon as they fledge.  It’s amazing all three are sticking around.

There's a big difference in Wingo Starr's plumage since he arrived in the spring.  He is certainly looking more adult now. :)

I was glad that some good Samaritan rescued our little chick on Monday. I was wondering because I saw all four Monday morning but only three after work and also the next morning.

Anyway the other three seem to be doing well. I've seen them way up on top of the clock tower, the communications tower and the McKenzie roof. This afternoon all three were at the bottom of the clock tower napping.

TPC does this bird get banded now that you are able to get to it? Or have they already been banded?

If the bird recovers and is releasable, then yes it will get some bling before it goes on its merry way!

One of the McKenzie Seeds chicks ran into a bit of trouble on Monday.  RCF had notice that she couldn't see all the chicks but it is hard to see everywhere chicks sit after they start to move around and fledge so it is really more a testament to RCF's familiarity with Hurricane and McKenzie Seeds that she found the other three chicks!!

The chick was picked up by a Good Samaritan barely a block away from the nestsite and delivered to a local vet who happens to work with the province's rehab organizations so the chick was transported to Winnipeg for treatment & rehab.

The chick, it is thought, has a fracture, but that hasn't been confirmed yet, its a tricky spot and they can be hard to find/confirm on examination and getting an xray on a wild bird isn't as straight forward as taking a selfie ;).  At the moment the bird is doing very well, nice and spunky and is on cage rest (yup, the critter equivalent to bed rest) which is, as I understand it, pretty much, if not exactly the same treatment it would receive if they had been able to confirm the fracture right off.

So it is a wait and see like most recoveries.  The bird is young, healthy and got to care very quickly all of which can only help with its prognosis.

More news as I have it.

Oh I do like that at least one chick has managed to jump/glide down to the lower roof!  Now if they will just use the roof and the walls as exercise equipment to build up their strength before they take the big jump .... (fingers crossed)

Well, from what Rose and I saw today the chick was not gliding. It was flapping and gaining height and also turned around to go back the way it came. This bird was doing a lot of flapping the 40 or so minutes we were there watching. One of them was making the perch bar go up and down from all the exercise it was getting from flapping. I just hope it doesn't come loose from the underside of the nest box.

I always hope for gentle glides wherever they are going on their first flights!!! But does indeed sound like this little quartet is ready get out there and cause some chaos  ;D

The chick found where Wingo perches and started yelling at him. He left!  ;D  Wingo is starting to get more adult feathers.

Two kids on the box.

One of these four fledged today, not very far though. It lifted off the top of the nest box towards the east, then north above the lower roof. It was flying level with the McKenzie roof turned around and landed down on the lower roof.  A minute later it was on the wall, the other three were watching all of this.

These chicks are about 40 days old and look to be the same size. They were doing a lot of wingersizing while I watched.   :-*

Oh look at all those little heads!! That is so cute and so wonderful!!
Way to go Hurricane and Wingo!

As a note, Hurricane has only twice had 4 chicks survive to this stage - in 2009 her first year nesting which was with Zeus.  The second was in 2015 which was her last year nesting with Brooklyn - it was also the year Ella (now the West Wpg female) hatched.

Well, I guess I should have waited until today to post. This morning I could see three chicks in the box and this afternoon I could see four chicks!  :o  :-* They had a big feed by the size of the prey Hurricane took in there....no leftovers.

Four chicks will certainly keep them busy !

The only way I can see in the nest box is to park two blocks away, so photos are not that sharp.

Any idea if there have been eggs laid at this site?  It sure would be nice to have some success here this year.

I believe these two are now incubating eggs as of yesterday. How many eggs there are... I just don't know!   ???

Wingo's half-sister Fiona is a year older and is still very brown compared with our birds at the same age.  I dare say by next year he will look more like Fiona this year - maybe a bit greyer on the back as males often fully mature in appearance before females do completely.  His sister is striking so it will be interesting to see him next year - and in years to come!!

Wingo really is a dark bird. He doesn't seem to have the white bib that other adult peregrines have. Do you think the colouring is just because he is still young, or might this be his mature colouration?

He is only just a year old and I believe his plumage will change when he molts.  :)

Actually only a half-sister of Fiona - he's the offspring of Walsh (Terminator's & Roosevelt's in Grand Fork) and Susan from Bay State Milling in Winona, Minnesota (no info on her parentage immediately available).

Susan was born at the Bay State Milling nest in 2015. She is banded black/red A/50. She is one of five chicks who grew up in the nest that year, and all were strong and healthy at banding. Susan was named for Susan Howe,  whose family owns Great Spirit Bluff.

Her parents are unknown, but not necessarily unbanded. I have tried many times to read bands at that nest, but there is not enough resolution to enhance them enough to be able to read them.

I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for this pair as well. Wingo isn't yet a year old so it may well be that he is not mature enough to breed successfully - but the again maybe he is! Lots of juvenile markings on him (vertical striping on the breast being the most obvious).  Interestingly (or to me at least) only Alley (2004 Radisson) in Lincoln NE nested in her first year - so too did Holly (2003 Fargo) in Brandon, but we haven't had any males from Manitoba or nesting in Manitoba who did.  If Wingo can pull this off it will be one for our record book at least!! 😁

A male showed up today or yesterday and I would say he is new.  Hurricane was trying to get him to come into the box this afternoon, maybe he will hang around.  :)

Here's some info

He was a male peregrine banded at the Moorhead Malt Plant on 6/26/, about 24 days old at banding and the Moorhead folks named him Wingo Starr.  b/r K/98

Apparently Fiona (2017) is his sister.  His parents are Walsh and Miracle. Thank you carly!

Whooo Hoo, someone where they are supposed to be!

Don't know if I should hope Sol comes back or keep my fingers crossed for a new boyfriend for her.  Sol's a nice bird but they haven't done well together in terms of chicks.  Neither of their faults.  If Sol goes off and finds himself another lady friend, he'll have had a great teacher which will make it easier for him going forward.  Hurricane has nice chicks so it would be nice to see her doing her thing even if it is with a new boy rather than trying to hatch eggs that just aren't going to hatch.

Tough decision, fortunately, I'm not the chick that is going to be making it  ;)

No, they haven't  done well together, we are hoping for a different male also...shame on us!  Maybe Brooklyn will come back. Wishful thinking!  :-X

Nice shot RCF!

It does look like Hurricane's muddy cheek.

It is Hurricane for sure!

McKenzie Seeds - 2019 / Wingo Starr & Hurricane

March 29 2019

We have a falcon back at the McKenzie building. I haven't got a band number yet but I believe it to be Hurricane and she seems to have the unique markings of Hurricane.  If it is Hurricane, this is the earliest she's been back, I think she was back on March 30, 2010 .
