We have our first hatch - at least one chick today and surprise, surprise, Ty was the one who was on the tot when s/he made his appearance.  He wouldn't get off when Beatrix came to relieve him and she didn't do a Princess and push him off.  She hung out a bit in the box and when it was obvious he wasn't going anywhere, she left and came back twice more over the next couple of hours.  Then the eggshell appeared from under Ty, he did a wee bit of nibbling and then Beatrix arrived and he relinquished their chick and the 3 other eggs to her.  Chick wasn't very old, not a bright white yet so the feathers weren't completely dry yet.  Expect we should have a full house by Monday - last year all of Beatrix's eggs hatched out within 36/48 hours of each other.

We still have all 4 eggs in place as Beatrix got up to stretch her legs. Then back to the task at hand.

Today is day 30 for incubation, mostly they hatch between 32 and 34 days so we over the weekend is most likely.  As I recall, Beatrix's last batch all hatched out overnight so if you can only check the forum once a day, mornings are likely your best bet for new news.

One thing about this warm weather, it does make the adults more active - the eggs don't need to be incubated so tightly or they will be too warm so there is always a lot of position changes which are easy to mistake for the kinds of spinning we see adults on hatching chicks do.  The light makes a very deep shadow as well so it is hard to see fine detail at times though there is no mistaking an extra patch of fuzzy white when they arrive.

All the snow has gone from the nestbox and Beatrix is napping on the eggs.

Anticipation builds as we await to see how our feathered WW falcons hunkered down in the wake of yesterday's severe weather.

I watched a shift change a bit earlier and they were pretty darn quick, eggs weren't uncovered for more than 15 seconds.  Usually these two are much more leisurely about the whole process.

How did Beatrix and Ty do through the storm yesterday, TPC?

Better than the Radisson birds but how much better I can't say for sure.  Their box faces north so they had rain and snow driving into their box.  They do however have much better protection from the wind so they were able to tuck down and ride it out.  Won't know until next week when their chicks are slated to being hatching though.   They have been very dedicated so I'm hoping for the best here.
