Good information, TPC, thank you. I remember Vesper, but am not sure about Bogart?

Bogart is one of our 2013 Brandon chicks - his nestmates were Spencer and Kelly.
2013 was a good year for surviving chicks - Spencer & Sundance (Logan) were north of Winnipeg, Kelly was in Winnipeg, Andamooka (West Winnipeg) was in Regina and Marv (Annie's son from Fargo) was in Grand Forks.

A number of our migration sightings (excluding transmitter reports) of Manitoba birds have been from Texas so not really surprising that he is taking the same route south as his northern cousins and potentially his mother.  However, we've not had one of our birds ID'd in Houston, they seem to prefer stopping further west.  Malala is Lewis' third cousin and she was caught on South Padre Island (southwest of Houston) this fall.  Lewis' aunt was Vesper who was ID'd in San Antonio and Bogart was his first cousin and he spent a lot of time along the Texas coastal wetlands on his first migration.

The Midwest Peregrine Society has also posted the same update about Lewis, with the comment:

Looks like he's got his winter home figured out. Great news about Nebraska boy.

The Lincoln page which has the webcams has been down for months. The page is back now, but so far the cams are not active.

However, there is good news from Joel Jorgensen.

In December of last year, Lewis, a son of Alley and 19/K, was spotted in Texas.

This December, he has been seen again. It seems that Lewis likes this part of Texas.

Peregrine Falcon news from Texas

December 28, 2015

Faithful Peregrine Falcon followers will remember that about a year ago big news came out of Texas regarding one of the Capitol’s birds.  Lewis, a male hatched in 2012, was spotted at the Anadarko Petroleum building in The Woodlands near Houston.  After not hearing anything about Lewis for several months, he was recently spotted again at the Anadarko building.

The following photo of Lewis was taken today (28 December) by Linda Kuhn.

Lewis was one of two offspring produced by the Capitol’s Peregrine Falcon pair in 2012.  The other bird fledged that year was Clark (hence, Lewis and Clark), who was found nesting at the Omaha Public Power District’s North Omaha power station in 2015.

Great news Clark is doing well.

I cropped the image so that it would not be reduced too much. Lewis looks as handsome as ever; I wonder if he might have taken up residence in Texas. It's good to know that both chicks from 2012 are continuing to do well.

A little while later, Orozco also visited the nest. Like his Dad, he was contemplating a nap.

The cams were down for a while; just before they went down 19/K paid a visit to the nest.

The little juvie continues to visit the nest. In the second pic, he is in flight, visible as a brown blur just to the left of the nest.

There is now an update on the blog about today's naming of the chick. Looks like it was a really nice ceremony, and a fitting way to honour Officer Orozco.

And so here we are at the end.  It has been a fun Peregrine Falcon season. Today’s ceremony at the Capitol announcing the winning entry for the ‘name-the-chick’ contest was a great way to put an exclamation point on it all. In fact, it made it special because it was about a lot more than Peregrine Falcons.

We had a great “name-the-chick” contest this year, with 507 initial suggestions and then 1,560 votes cast to select the winner from five finalists. After the votes were tallied, one name stood out, capturing nearly 80% of all votes cast by the public. The young male Peregrine Falcon hatched and raised at the Capitol in 2015 will, from this point forward, be known as Orozco.

Four individuals submitted Orozco and their names are as follows:

  • State Senator Kate Bolz of Lincoln

  • Amanda Horner of Lincoln

  • Omaha Police Sergeant Matt Manhart of Omaha

  • Rebecca McCoy of Lincoln

Winners of the 2015 “name-the-chick” contest with the author on the far left and NGPC Deputy Director Tim McCoy on the far right.  Winners (holding their certificates), from right-to-left, were State Senator Kate Bolz, Rebecca McCoy, Omaha Police Sergeant Matt Manhart and Amanda Horner. Congratulations to each of them!!  NEBRASKAland photo.

The winning name obviously honors the memory of fallen Omaha Police Officer Kerrie Orozco. The tragedy which occurred on 20 May 2015 in Omaha impacted citizens throughout our state and across our country. It was a privilege to be able to honor Officer Orozco, today, and it was special that our winners included a state senator and an Omaha Police Officer.

Now, we hope the best for Orozco. He is the 22nd Peregrine Falcon to be fledged at the Capitol and he appears to be thriving.  He will hang around the Capitol for several more weeks as he is still dependent on his parents. Sometime in late summer or early fall, he is expected to go out on his own into the great unknown. I am hopeful, in a couple years, we will hear from Orozco again when he settles down and is sighted as an adult falcon.

Thanks to everyone that participated in the naming contest and to everyone that came out today, it was a great ceremony!

From the blog today:

Falcon name to be announced Friday at Capitol

After a great deal of anticipation and a little bit of a delay, I’m thrilled to broadcast we will be announcing the winning entry and introducing the winners of the Peregrine Falcon “name-the-chick” contest at a public event at the Capitol on Friday afternoon.   Specifically, we will be gathering for a brief ceremony on the north steps of the Capitol at 1 p.m.  In case of rain, we will move to the 14th floor rotunda.

Are we really surprised that Alley has good genes?  The Trey + Princess genetic magic is still working!
Not one bit!

The pair at the Capitol must have good genes or is doing something right when raising youngsters, because this is a pretty good showing for one pair.  Will there be any more?  Stay tuned.[/i]
