I am glad that Princess recovered from the incident.
TPC - do you have any idea who fought with Princess?
Kinderchick:
Just out of curiosity, TPC, are eggs that are referred to as non viable, eggs that have actually not been fertilized? ???
The Peregrine Chick:
--- Quote from: birdcamfan on June 13, 2014, 14:22 ---So these chicks could be from "pre-Smiley"? Could it be that he is not quite ready to make babies but has been able to figure out what he needs to do to be helpful, or perhaps the stress of a fight stopped the embryo development of his chicks at a critical stage?
--- End quote ---
No, these eggs are definitely Smiley's, the timing doesn't work for Hart ... and Smiley is old enough, he's five years old, Hart at only two was more of a question mark for us this year, but that too didn't seem to be a problem.
As for Princess' fight, it is possible, she certainly looked worse for wear and she hung out in the nestbox for a couple of nights which isn't something she does often but that was likely her making sure no one could slip in after hours so to speak.

TPC--Would this be due to Princess's age? or just environmental, or just because it can happen?
--- End quote ---
Hard to know for sure. Could be environmental, she does migrate so gets to sample prey from lots of locales. Could be her age, she is 12 but that isn't over the hill yet or it could just be this year with one suitor, then a fight then a new suitor she wasn't going to produce 4 viable eggs.
Another possibility is all 4 eggs were viable but only 2 of the chicks were strong enough to hatch out.
