Ah, the chicks are starting to wingercize ... so cute but it does mean that they are close to half-grown ... in a month we won't have them to watch online anymore ...

So, just my opinion, we owe a great big debt to RCF and Rose for their dedication and sharing regarding the Brandon birds.
Yes there is a cam on the downtown site but a great percentage of what we know about these birds are due to the updates from RCF and Rose.
These two ladies have spent so very much of their time ( more than the Winnipeg watchers )
observing and documenting the Brandon birds. And they do it at their own expense and time.

The feather grows within a sheath which is what makes it look a bit like a Q-tip - as it grows, it grows out the end.  The sheath that you see breaks down and the chicks clean it off as they preen.  At this age when we band them we get some of this stuff on our clothes and hand - its dry, flaky.

When you look at the photo showing the wing feathers they almost look like long quills?!  Are the soft feathery parts there already flat against the wing or within some membrane of it or...??

• 0430h - chick pile much larger these days & fidgety
• 0509h - small breakfast from Hurricane - his chicks are almost his size already!!
• 0647h - second breakfast delivery from Brooklyn - chicks are starting to feed themselves, or try at least
• 0708h - naptime!
• 0726h - little power surge & cam reset
• 0932h - Hurricane arrived to hang out on the box edge
• 1004h - mid-morning snack - shark-like feeding frenzy
• 1021h - naptime in the shade at the back of the box
