thanks for the pictures and video. :)
Such a ray of sunshine and hope after yesterday.
The Peregrine Chick:
You knew this was coming ... ;)
Day - Clear. High of 16C. Breezy. Winds from the North at 20 to 25 km/h.
Night - Clear. Low of 4C. Breezy. Winds from the North at 10 to 20 km/h.
Checking the U of W station, the winds aren't just from the north, they are clocking around downtown like crazy - isn't a single direction they haven't blown this morning. Wind speeds have been averaging about 17 km/h but at this station there have been gusts this morning up to 46.7km/h. Hopefully these gusts are the tail end of the storm and it will be less "breezy" (nice euphemism) as the day goes on. That will at least make it easier for Princess and Ivy to find "toss-less" positions in which to brood.
The Peregrine Chick:
According to the recorder from pre-dawn to now ...
* Chicks hatched pre-dawn again.
* 0534h - you can see that Princess is shuggling more than eggs & her first chick under her.
* 0634h - Ivy comes in with food (you don't see him, Princess walks off camera to get the food & comes back) - kids look younger, so I'm going to say the 0430h mark for age - in part because of how dry they are (dry but not fluffy), but that's just a best guess. And this was meal one, one of today's chicks did a "davenport" after s/he lost Princess and sibling for support. As sibling hit max capacity (only took 30 secs), davenporting chick righted itself and got food. All chicks asleep a minute later and Princess got to eat. Back on chicks at 0644h.
* 0724h - Princess got tossed off the chicks, one chick went astray but don't know if it was live or dead chick - didn't take her more than a couple of minutes to realize she was missing someone and everyone was back underneath safe and sound
* 0734h - Princess has repositioned herself so that the chicks are in the bight sun and she is blocking the wind. She starts talking to someone, Ivy I presume and one of the chicks rolls out from under her, sits up and responds to her vocalizing by asking for food; after a few seconds she stuffs him/her back under and continues vocalizing (that is RCF's photos and video)
* 0739h - Princess gets tossed again but only a little this time, she leaves for a moment and there is egg & dead chick in one huddle about six inches away from live chick huddle. Princess comes back and everyone is tucked back into place
* 0810h - Princess gets tossed, one escapee but everyone back safely undercover in a minute. Within a few more minutes, Princess has got the flat-hard-to-toss position worked out ...
... and to answer Irenekl's question, I think perhaps it has ... the egg remaining looks darker, but maybe it is turned around. If it is viable, I would expect it to hatch out soon given the delay and how fast these two arrived post storm ... have to wait and see ...
susha:
Wind keeps threatening to blow Princess off her babes, but she's velcroed :) Mother of the Year for this birdie!
susha:
Way to go Princess!! Got a couple of days before more rain - time to fatten up the fluffies :-*
