It's comfortable more for young birds than for older ones, or rather the older birds do it less often.  Brooklyn is doing it because he is hot and by lying down he is able to get his breast on something cooler and he is able to spread his wings out to catch the wind so that it flows under him which again is cooling.

Brooklyn is the Dad, Jo  ;)   and I very rarely see the parents on top of the nest box.

Right now there is one pancake chick and his/her siblings are just hanging out watching the world.

Yes and they should be because Hurricane fed them and 50 seconds after she left Brooklyn came in and fed them again.........they were quite willing to eat more.  ::) ;D
