Cooper:
Out to the post office, 5 minutes ago. Spotted a peregrine circling above the government parking lot across from the convention centre. My guess is that it is Princess, but old eyes and on the ground.  8)

The Peregrine Chick:
Just posted this in the CBC comments section as a reminder to the gang there .... I'm posting it here as well so you know what I'm saying where ....

Hey folks

First chick fledged at 0700h this morning and at the moment we can't find him (yes we know its a him) but that is not a bad thing.  Usually if they are down low or on the roads we find them and if they are safe on rooftops we don't, or not right away.  We have volunteer fledgewatchers joining in on the ground to try to spot the chicks but so far no news, which in the peregrine world is usually good news.

Because the chicks don't know how to fly, they are like gliders for the first few days while they figure out how to use the big flappy things (their wings).  The learn quick and usually try to get back to area around the nestsite within the first 24-48 hours.  Most will not come back to the nestbox or ledge just as an FYI, some will though.  Regardless of where they are, the parents will find them and feed them until they learn how to hunt for themselves.

It will be difficult to keep all the remaining chicks on-camera from here on in, but we will try.  We are all volunteers so can't always be watching and repositioning the cameras but we will try the best we can.  If/when the others fledge we will post the information and if anything happens to a chick (knock on wood nothing will), we will post the information as well.  My suggestion is to check the Manitoba Falcon Cam Forum (the link is in the "Inside the Nest" update above) for up-to-date information on the chicks - particularly over this weekend as the other two males and maybe even the female may decide to join their brother wherever he migth be.

Happy viewing folks,
The Peregrine Chick

There is construction everywhere, not just on the west and north sides, but all over downtown.
Which leads me to think that this is "normal noise" for the kids.
Even before they were hatched, this conscruction/destruction was going on.
Kind of like music playing for an unborn child, it's what it has been exposed to from day one.

As for the people appearing on roofs, well that's most certainly a different thing.
Poor little birdies, big bad people appearing not just once, but twice in their short lifespans. ;)

You have no idea - there is construction/demolition a block west, 5 or 6 buildings are washing windows, another building is doing major roof work, the old Canada Post building has its south face all opened up and there are boom trucks on the west side (or there were) doing work there.  A little rain and no one can do work, a sunny Friday and everyone is buzzing about like bees ...

...if you're talking about that back lane area, I've finally figured out that it is actually pretty far away from the nest - like on the other side of Portage Ave, and behind Mountain Equipment.  Unless I'm wrong.  Again.   ;D
