Looks like it's dinner time at the Radisson :D

RaptorGal:
Tracy, thank you so much for all your words of wisdom that we all might have understanding of phantachick behavior and what goes on in the nestbox.  As someone watching a second banding (I saw MacKenzie chicks get banded last year), this reinforces some of the things I remembered and some of the things that I forgot.  Thanks.  These phantabandits are sure growing fast!!  You can see some daily changes taking place, like balance and longer feathers, and of course the meal times are amusing as they pick at their food supply. :D

Now that they are banded, do we know which chick is the "Jack in the corner" or "Jill in the corner"?  I am not able to pick out the band colors with the falcon cam color picture that I see on my computer screen.

That the chicks hadn't been fed and that the parents weren't hanging out with the chicks anymore.  The banding always focusses viewers on changes in behaviour and concerns that human contact has had a negative impact.  It won't be nearly so bad when the Brandon chicks hit this same milestone - lots of new folks who have to yet to get comfortable with the changes that occur over a very short period of time.

The Peregrine Chick:
The folks over on the CBC side have been having a panic about the chicks and I've already had a couple of phone calls (long distance too!) - so just in case some of the newer folks are reading this here's what I posted on the CBC site, though it looks as though the service that handles the comments is a couple of hours behind ... (they are at 0936h EDT - so two hours behind).

Hi Folks,

The Radisson chicks are fine.

They were fed twice yesterday after we banded them - once in the afternoon and once late in the evening.  They were fed this morning at 0419h CDT.  Ivy (the male) spent most of the overnight hanging out with the chicks but left after Princess (the female) brough in the 0400h meal.  Time between feedings will increase to hours at this stage as well.  That is normal.  If the weather stays hot, expect more meals pre-dawn and early morning when its cooler.

Neither one of the adults is ever out-of-sight or hearing of the nestbox at this stage, they just don't hang out with them all the time.  Again, this is normal peregrine behaviour.  Just as an FYI, Ivy is the one who hangs out in the nestbox with the kids when it gets hot in the afternoon - he doesn't need to, he just does.

And there is the 10am meal just arriving ... the adults don't feed the chicks mouth-to-mouth anymore, now they have to learn to feed themselves in preparation for being able to hunt for themselves.  Part two of the 10am feeding arrived at 10:05am and the chicks are overrunning their father.  Ivy's brought enough food that at 1010am, Princess has come by for a nosh with the kids as well.  No one goes hungry at this nest!

I don't generally post updates in the comment section because we have found in previous years that most readers don't scroll back through all the comments to find answers before post - not surprising, there are always lots of comments.  So keep your eye on the "inside the Nest" updates above the video boxes OR check out the constant observations & conversation on the Manitoba Falcon Cam Forum - www.species-at-risk.mb.ca/pefa & click on the link on the right.

Happy Viewing
Tracy aka The Peregrine Chick

I'm going to also post this in the news section until I'm sure the panic has died down some ...
