Interesting... Why does this occur, TPC? ???

This may not be the answer you are looking for, but I think it occurs naturally in peregrine falcons.

Anatum (Continental) subspecies (Falco peregrinus anatum)
The Anatum Peregrine is intermediate in terms of colour and size. It often has a salmon or peach-tinged breast, with stronger barring across the breast than the Tundra subspecies. The back is slightly darker than in the Tundra Peregrine, but still has bluish-gray tinges, especially on the upperwing coverts and uppertail coverts. The moustache on the Anatum Peregrine is very wide, and the auricular patch is often very small. Juveniles have a solid brown crown and forehead, and have a fairly wide moustache, although their auricular patch is often larger than that of adults. They have heavy brown streaks on their cream coloured breast and belly, and have small buffy edges to the feathers on their back.

RCF:
Did somebody think that Hurricane was injured?    She looks much the same to me all the time with the colored wash on her bib.

The Peregrine Chick:
For those of you looking at RCF's and Dennis' photos - you will notice that Hurricane has largish rust coloured blotches on her white breast feathers, no she isn't injured its a wash that appears on their feathers after nesting for our bird - before nesting on others.  Its referred to as salmon-coloured though I've never seen it salmon-coloured.  On a number of our females its quite rusty coloured, on Trey is was this amazing pale blush pink.  I keep watching his boys to see if any of them look to be getting it - Brooklyn might soon, even though he's not Trey's, he's related to Trey through Phoebe so who knows - but Brooklyn has a lot of Trey's similarities, including the small, lighter speckles on his breast and belly.  And yes, they are related, Their grandparents (T-Rex and Phoebe) were siblings.
