And to think I almost stayed home tonight - thought for sure nothing would happen! Kinderchick, Saoirse, Jazzerkins and I were just quietly standing on the north side of Portage, watching the occassional wing flap in the nest. Kinderchick's son stopped by with the baby (Cute!). I just happened to look up at the nest when Cade jumped out and started flapping. Didn't matter that I was screaming No! No! Don't do it! at him - he kept coming. Parent sitting on aerial took off after him, and the two of them flew west past us, and around the corner, north of Portage. Of course none of us could run, and had no hope of getting to the corner in time to see where they went. But because Cade was slowly losing altitude, my guess would be that he's somewheres around the Air Canada building. I doubt he would have made it much farther - I'm surproied he went that far. Never having seen a fledge before, I wouldn't really know, though. We spent over an hour going up and down the streets, into parking lots, on top of parking lots - couldn't see anything, no sign on the ground (thank goodness). I'm sure he's on a roof, and the parent knows right where he is.
Whew! What an evening! Definitely more than any of us were expecting! And I really need a good cup of tea right now!

Well, I just got home from downtown -- although we (Kinderchick, Sami, Jazzerkins and I) thought we had a good eye on Cade as he flew, we weren't able to find him after walking round and around, checking from the top of a couple of parkades. When he fledged, he soared into the sky, heading west along Portage Avenue, then veering northward as he lost height. We figured he landed on the APTN building or something right in that area. Frustrating not to be able to pin down his location, but fantastic to see him take that first flight (first fledge I've witnessed). Wow! One minute he was standing on the edge of the nestbox, wingercizing, and the next minute he was off! Hmmm . . . I may dream of flying tonight!
Jazzerkins:
Hi everyone, Just came home from downtown. Cade is my first "seen" fledge. It was amazing. He was on the edge of the box, flapped his wings a couple of times and then just went. He went west almost in the middle of Portage Avenue, then started wobbling and veered to the north side of Portage somewhere between Hargrave and Carlton. Some of us spent almost 2 1/5 hours looking for him - from the ground, from the top level of a couple of parkades, etc. We tried to track the parents to see if they would go to where he was, but not success at this time. Talked to TPC a couple of times and she was using the cameras to try to spot him. Hope he is on the top of a tall building so he can continue his flight training without the same type of problem Fyfe had. Keep everything crossed everyone. Hope Queen Bea waits a few more days to try this.
