Des and I just saw Cade fly from the Rogers building over to the radisson and tried to land beside a parent on the radisson. He couldn't quite get the landing down so turned around and flew back to the Rogers building roof. He left there headed toward aircanada building then turned and went behind the hydro building. Just now Cafe and a parent both flew home for a reunion with Bea!

A very vocal Beatrix and lots of wingersizing. I thought she was ready to fledge. She has since settled down.

Quote from: Leana
I guess the one thing that struck me the most was how clearly you can hear the chicks yelling, even from the ground.  After Ivy delivered dinner the second time Bea and Cade were yelling to each other.  If they are that loud on the ground, over the noise of traffic,

I didn't want to quote all of our newbie fledge watcher Leana, but I quite agree with you about the loudness of the birds. Have stood on Graham and Donald and heard them from Portage Avenue. Was downtown from just after 3 to 4pm and I must tell you our little missy gave me quite a scare. At 3:50 as others have mentioned she decided to put on quite a show of wingercising which totally scared the poop out of me, she kept it up for 5 minutes or more and I was sitting there watching her. My thoughts were what will I do if she flys, I don't have a phone, there is nobody else around. PANIC. Thank the heavens, she stopped after a few minutes and I could start breathing.  again.

Another long but wonderful day of fledgewatching with great company! :D Left home this morning at 7:00 to fledgewatch for a few hours downtown with des. It was great to be able to report updates from the street to Jazzerkins at work, who then was able to post for us. 8) Cade was still on the Rogers Bldg. when we got downtown and Bea in her nestbox. Observed parents flying overhead, making food drops and keeping a watchful eye from some of their favourite perches... Again, this evening, met several fledgewatchers down on the street, Jazzerkins, des, Saoirse, Pam, msdolittle and of course, the incomparable newbie fledgewatcher, Leana, who deserves to be inducted into the "Fledgewatchers Hall of Fame", if ever there is one. She now has the official fledgewatcher sore neck. ;) As for the birds this evening, we observed Cade still on the Rogers Bldg. and Bea still in the nestbox, with food drops made by the parents for both of them. A wee bit of wingersizing by Bea, but not enough to think she was ready to take off yet. A little bit of calling out to each other, as well. What really amazes me is that with all of the heavy duty traffic noise on Portage Ave., it is still possible to hear the voices of the birds, above all of the street noise, many, many stories up, on the highest of buildings. :o

Now Trey has brought it into the nest box.

Oh, BCBird, I understand your mistake.  Every time I go to this site, I think of Trey, and I miss him very much.  He is always in the back of my mind.

I did it!  I experienced my first fledge watch!!! :D  And what was it like you ask?  Well, first and foremost... MY NECK FLIPPIN' HURTS!!!  LOL.  Guess I should have expected that!  ::).  Anyway it was everything I anticipated.  Met some great people.  Saw the peregrines "up close" (OK, have to admit, watching them on the cam gives a MUCH better view, AND your neck doesn't get sore!  ;)).  Got to see Ivy flying by a couple of times, "making" dinner and delivering it to Bea.  We actually thought she had been fed twice because we didn't know Ivy had taken it away the first time!  Did witness the ledge-feeding game though!  And guess what?  TPC, you will be so proud of me... When we first saw "a bird" up on the drum like thing on the Rogers building, Saoirse and Jazzerkins both said it was Cade up there but I declared it was Ivy.  They asked me how I could tell... my answer was "by the white breast of course!" (and then we saw the dinner prep with feathers flying all over!).  So I guess that means I passed "Peregrine 101" eh?  ;D ;D  I guess the one thing that struck me the most was how clearly you can hear the chicks yelling, even from the ground.  After Ivy delivered dinner the second time Bea and Cade were yelling to each other.  If they are that loud on the ground, over the noise of traffic, I can't imagine how loud they must be up close!!!  Cade spent the evening wandering back and forth on the east side of the Rogers building, popping up every now and again to let us know he was still there.  Cute little fellow.  I mean fiercely cute little fellow. ;).   So that sums my first fledgewatch experience.  It was great to meet all of you and put faces to forum names.  And now I am off to ice my neck  ::) ;D

1921h

Beatrix has found the shaded corner the boys found last week.  Its at the north end (the far end) of the nestbox and as the sun goes down that corner is where the shade begins in the nestbox.  She's smart enough to get her head out of the sun which is helping to keep her cool.

Little excitement there for a moment so I've zoomed out just incase someone comes in for a visit ...

She's a stubborn little peregrine, I wouldn't put it past her to stay where she is while its hot and wait for fairer weather for fledging.

But I do agree, the last of the baby has left Beatrix in appearance but I don't think our girl is widly adventurous - she has yet to try the hop down to the nestledge ... or maybe she's just not bothering to since she has the box to herself.

Having said that, she is somewhere between 42 and 45 days of age.  Fledging age is 40 to 45 but this is an average range.  Larger females take longer, she may go tomorrow or wait until next week.  If I remember correctly, I had a female chick many years ago who flew at day 51.  I've also had female chicks go at 39 days old.

So its another wait and see I'm afraid folks.  :D

Was glad to see Ivy come back and finally Beatrice got her own way and got some food. LOL I kinda figured the adults are encourging her to fly, but it was some hard to watch, especially with Beatrice panting and looking so  hot and unhappy. She sure did look like she was going to take off a few times. I got a video call while all that was happening and my cousin was wondering what all the screeching was in the background. LOL. Good to hear all seems well for Cade and Carson too.  :D

Just back from fledgewatching and it was (happily) relatively uneventful. Shortly after arriving downtown, Pam came along and we caught sight of Cade on the northeast corner of the Rogers Building. After a while, he took off, made a nice circle to the east and then back around the back of the Rogers Building, disappearing from sight. Leana came along, and we watched without any luck for a while, but eventually Cade appeared again at the northwest corner of the building and, as far as I know, he hasn't left the roof since, although he's done his popping in and out of sight routine a few times.

While all of this was going on, Bea was in the nestbox, and up on the edge of it, back into the box, back and forth. Princess was on the aerial above her. Then Ivy appeared on the drum-like structure on the Rogers Building, and feathers began to fly as he (apparently) prepared a meal which he then delivered to Bea.

When I left downtown, Bea was in the nestbox, Cade was on the Rogers Building, and neither parent was in sight. Fledgewatchers Leana, Jazzerkins, and Kinderchick were watching, and Des was on her way!

They did an interview with the Wildlife Haven on CTV 6 p.m. news and had a couple shots of Carson on there.  Looking good

Beatrix's behaviour is fascinating this evening.  She seems to be on high alert or very edgeyl.  Been watching for the last few hours and a few times I felt certain she might take flight.  Cleary fledge time is imminent.
