Great, great news that Carson is doing so well, glad to hear he's been flying a bit. However you decide to re-release him, it'll be good to have him back in the downtown air with the others.

Great news about Carson!

Tracy, is Bea bigger than usual for a female? Are the males smaller than usual? Or is it business as usual?
Just got a good look at Cade and Beatrix close together and she seems HUGE.

Sorry, forgot to post about Carson  :-[

He's fine, he's eating well and has taken a few short flights down the length of his flight cage, so he should be coming home very soon, just need to decide how to safely return him to the nestbox without spooking Beatrix and Cade.

:) So very happy to see that Cade is looking out for his sister and has returned. Big brother, little sister???? many of us have a big brother who has taken good care of us and we, as little sisters have learned much from them. Knowledge, love and respect. Beatrix will fledge with his help. Speaking of brothers, how is Carson?  ???

Just got home -- I left downtown around 12:30 (thanks for posting my update, TPC!) and all was very quiet at that time. It was great to spend the morning watching -- when I went downtown around 9, MsD, Kinderchick, Jazzerkins and Gingerlee were already there. As usual, we came and went at different times, but it was great to watch Bea venture out on the nestledge with a fair bit of enthusiasm, lots of wing flapping as she went -- sending our hearts into our throats more than once. When Cade left the nestledge, he made a nice flight over to the Rogers Building and we couldn't see him at all for a while, although he did pop his head up finally not long before I left. Princess was on the aerial for quite a while and then disappeared. Around 11:45, another adult showed up and walked along the west edge of the Radisson roof, finally settling at the southwest corner, disappearing occasionally, but re-appearing regularly. I couldn't swear to who it was, but don't think it was Princess -- seemed too small. Pretty sure it was Ivy. All in all, a well spent morning!

They seem to be very active for such a hot afternoon. Maybe the breeze is helping to keep them cool.

Cade and Beatrix are napping, preening and hanging out on the nestbox edge right now ...

As part of chick social interaction they nip at each other, more when they are all together in the nestbox but it usually continues until about migration.

I have saved a kmz (Google Earth) file of the downtown area with place marks showing many of the places mentioned in the posts. If anyone would like one email me.

All these camera angles are awsome!!!

What is the average number of birds a day an adult or juvenile will eat?

Don't know that there is an average.  We usually see the adults (when the chicks aren't their responsibility anymore) hunting a couple of times a day.  Do they catch something each time, that we can't say.  Do know that in the couple of weeks just prior to leaving in the fall and just after arriving in the spring, all the birds do is hunt and sleep, lots of hunting and lots of sleeping.

Hmm...from what I saw, it seemed like preening.  Birds will nip at each other though if the other is irritating them.  It could be as simple as "Get out of my space!"

What does the nipping at each other signify?  Are they love nips?  Playful nips? Mean nips?
