Falcon chicks rescued from ledge
Peregrines' nesting area flooded following heavy rains

Updated: June 6 at 11:07 AM CDT

A specially trained Winnipeg firefighter was lowered down from the roof of the Radisson Hotel to try and save three Peregrine falcon chicks that faced drowning on a 13th-storey ledge.

The rescue technician rappelled down from the roof to the ledge to take three chicks down to the ground.

It's not known if the chicks are still alive.

The ledge that houses the nesting area of a family of falcons has partially filled with water following the deluge this morning.

A blog entry by Tracy, the longtime co-ordinator of Manitoba's Peregrine Falcon Recovery Project, indicates a rescue is under way at the Radisson, which includes help from Manitoba Conservation.

A remote-controlled "falcon cam" that points at the gravel-covered ledge from an angle about one storey higher is hosted by CBC.

The falcon cam shows one soaked bird covering its chicks, which are less than two weeks old.

The falcon pair had four eggs earlier in the spring, and three hatched on May 28.

Thanks skygirl. I'm sure there will be others who will want to see it for themselves.

I am going to wait for the official word from Tracy...and miracles do happen...but I have seen enough nest tragedy this year that I'm not going to fool myself this time...of course...I hope to be able to eat those words later....

I did record the rescue...but haven't processed it yet...I just don't think I am ready to watch it....

Well said Mardyn.
